Blocking the Cu (II) Ions Mediated Catalytical Ability for Construction of Ratiometric Fluorescence Sensing Platform Based on Glutathione-Stabilized Copper Nanoclusters

Bei-Bei Tao,Ning-Ning Wu,Hong-Ding Zhang,Hai-Bo Wang

It is of great importance to integrate two kinds of fluorescent probes in one system to construct ratiometric sensing platform. Inspired by the efficient overlapped spectrum of glutathione-stabilized copper nanoclusters (GSH-CuNCs) and 2, 3-diaminophenazine (DAP), a novel and label-free ratiometric fluorescent sensor has been developed for Cu2+ and kojic acid (KA) detection on the basis of in situ converting o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into DAP by the catalytic oxidation ability of Cu2+. The Cu2+ catalytically generated DAP was served as an energy acceptor to inhibit the fluorescence emission of GSH-CuNCs (energy donor). As a result, the sensitivity and accuracy of the strategy were greatly improved due to the dual-emission reverse change ratiometric profile. The sensing system showed high sensitivity toward Cu2+ in a range of 0.1–50 μM and with a limit of detection of 20 nM. Furthermore, based on the specific coordination interaction between Cu2+ and KA, the ratiometric sensor displayed the range of detection of KA from 0.2 μM to 300 μM with a limit of detection of 50 nM. Thus, the ratiometric method paved a new way for the effective quantification of Cu2+ and KA in real samples, which were closely concerned with human health.

Preparation of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan hydrogel compounded with graphene oxide to enhance the adsorption properties for Cu(II) in aqueous solution

Li Luzhong,Wang Zhu,Ma Piming,Bai Huiyu,Dong Weifu,Chen Mingqing

A novel bio-adsorbent, composite hydrogel beads, composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by an instantaneous gelation method. The micromorphology and thermal stability of the PVA/CS/GO hydrogel beads were characterized by scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) respectively. Adsorption of Cu(II) onto PVA/CS/GO hydrogel beads was investigated with respect to pH, initial concentration, temperature and adsorption time. Adsorption data were well matched by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model at the optimum pH 5.5. The maximum adsorption capacities of PVA/CS/GO hydrogel beads were found to be 162 mg g −1 for Cu(II) at 30 °C, which was much higher than that of PVA/CS hydrogel. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic process in nature. Besides, desorption efficiency and reusability of the adsorbents were assessed on basis of six consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. Based on these studies, it can be seen that PVA/CS/GO hydrogel beads will be a potential recyclable adsorbent for removal of hazardous metal ions in waste water.

Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) removal using a humic substance-based double network hydrogel in individual and multicomponent systems

Jianhong Ma,Jinming Luo,Yutang Liu,Yuanfeng Wei,Tao Cai,Xingwen Yu,Hui Liu,Chengbin Liu,John C. Crittenden

A systematic study of the interaction between adsorbents and potentially toxic metal ions in multicomponent systems is of great significance due to the coexistence of multiple potentially toxic metal ions in the real water environment. In this study, a new humic substance-based double network hydrogel (PAA/HS gel) was produced by a radical polymerization method and applied to Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) removal in both individual and multicomponent systems under various conditions. The macroporous network structure (aperture ≈ 10 μm) and high water permeability of the PAA/HS gel could fully facilitate the active site exposure and increase the potentially toxic metal ion diffusion rate. The PAA/HS gel exhibited high theoretical adsorption capacities of 360.50, 151.00 and 412.76 mg g−1 for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in individual systems. Noticeably, both interference and promotion of adsorption behaviors were identified in multicomponent systems. In binary systems, the adsorption capacity and rate were decreased for Pb(II) and Cu(II), while increased for Cd(II). In ternary systems, the adsorption capacity and rate for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) were decreased. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics were well fitted by Langmuir–Freundlich and Elovich models, respectively, indicating that the PAA/HS gel possessed a heterogeneous surface and various types of binding sites. The FTIR and XPS studies confirmed that both nitrogen- and oxygen-containing functional groups (i.e., amino, phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups) were involved in the adsorption process, while the interactions between functional groups and Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) were different.

Dithionite–zerovalent iron coupling drives Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycling for persulfate activation and PAH degradation in carbonate-rich water

Maolin Wang,Haoyang Fu,Yanchun Fan,Gang Zhao,Tianwen Liu,Yi Liu,Qingqing Wu,Ying Huang

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in carbonate-rich water is severely constrained by radical scavenging and surface passivation of iron-based activators. Here, a dithionite–zerovalent iron–copper (DTN–ZVI–Cu) ternary system was developed to promote persulfate activation toward predominantly non-radical oxidation under bicarbonate-rich conditions. DTN and ZVI accelerated Cu(II)-to-Cu(I) reduction while simultaneously regenerating the ZVI surface, thereby sustaining Cu-centered redox turnover and facilitating the formation of Cu(III)-like oxidizing species. In parallel, DTN promoted sulfur-centered conversion pathways that favored 1 O 2 generation. These non-radical oxidizing pathways are generally less susceptible to inorganic-anion scavenging than conventional sulfate and hydroxyl radicals. Under standard conditions, the system achieved 91% acenaphthene removal within 60 min ( k obs  = 0.039 min −1 ), an 8.7-fold kinetic enhancement over ZVI/PS alone. Moderate bicarbonate further promoted degradation, with k obs reaching 0.13 min −1  at 250 mg/L HCO 3 − , which is consistent with a plausible role of copper–carbonate complexation in stabilizing Cu redox cycling and favoring non-radical oxidation pathways. XPS analysis suggested that DTN–ZVI coupling elevated the reactive copper pool (Cu(I) + Cu(III)) to 57% of total surface copper. Applied to synthetic wastewaters, the system maintained 90–96% PAH removal at optimal dosages, indicating strong performance across complex saline matrices. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using coexisting Cu(II) as a catalytic resource for non-radical persulfate activation in carbonate-rich water.

Schiff Base functionalized CMC/PVA composites for efficient adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II): From molecular design to economic evaluation

Karim Youssef Nabat,Ali Raza Ayub,Ahmed E. Mansy,Tesfa Oluma Fufa,Niu Zhang,Xiyan Xu,Hansheng Li,Hui Li

Green CMC/PVA based Schiff base bio-composite material successfully Fabricated • CMC/PVA-LH35 composite achieved adsorption capacity of 532.15 mg/g for Cu(II) • CMC/PVA-LA35 composite achieved adsorption capacity of 516.49 mg/g for Zn(II) • High reusability after 6 cycles with low-cost adsorbents for desalination • DFT computational analysis to elucidate the structural and binding mechanism Metal contamination in water sources is a critical threat to human health and water ecosystems, which reduces the efficiency of water desalination. Therefore, the development of materials for metal removal is essential for water purification. In this study, two novel Schiff bases (LA35 and LH35) were immobilized in a carboxymethyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (CMC/PVA) matrix via robust hydrogen bonding. The CMC/PVA-LA35 and CMC/PVA-LH35 composite adsorbents achieved a maximal adsorption of 474.38 mg/g and 532.15 mg/g for Cu(II) and 516.49 mg/g and 468.04 mg/g for Zn(II), respectively, at optimum conditions, pH 5, 318 K, and 300 mg/L. The data fit the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting that adsorption occurred on a homogeneous mono-layer surface with uniform binding sites. Additionally, a thermodynamic analysis confirmed the reaction was both spontaneous and endothermic. After six cycles of adsorption/desorption, the CMC/PVA-LA35 and CMC/PVA-LH35 maintained outstanding reusability with efficiencies of 76.72% and 81.69% for Cu(II) and 71.33% and 67.32% for Zn(II), respectively. DFT calculations revealed effective metal-ligand interactions via charge transfer and reduced bandgap. These findings were consistent with the large experimental adsorption capacities and confirm the importance of chemisorption for Cu(II) and Zn(II) removal. These findings reveal that metal chelation strength and complexation control the adsorption process. The results of the cost-effectiveness analysis showed that the total cost of reusability was extremely low. This discovery unveils its potential use in water desalination, offering new bio-composites to decrease metal contamination and protect aquatic life. Fabrication of a Recyclable Sodium Alginate-Zeolite/Glutaraldehyde (SA-HZ/GA) Composite Adsorption Membrane and Its Efficient Removal of Cu(II)

Lifeng Yang,Yirun Yang,Yi Zhu,Huajiang Zuo,Dongmei Deng

Cu(II) contamination in industrial wastewater constitutes a major challenge to global environmental management as traditional treatment methods are plagued by high energy consumption, secondary pollution risks, and substantial costs. A technical strategy was developed to prepare glutaraldehyde-crosslinked sodium alginate-zeolite (SA-HZ/GA) composite adsorption membranes via phase inversion. This approach leverages zeolites' structural reinforcement and mass transfer channel formation combined with glutaraldehyde's crosslinking properties to optimize material performance. SA-HZ/GA features abundant mesopores with sizes ranging from 2 to 16 nm and exhibits fracture strength over 74% higher than pure sodium alginate membranes. At pH 5 and 25°C, its Cu(II) adsorption capacity reaches 46.80 mg/g with over 80% removal efficiency maintained after 5 cycles with 0.1 M HCl as desorbent. The adsorption process fits the Langmuir model ( R 2 = 0.999) and follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating monolayer chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption was spontaneous (Δ G = −12.5 kJ/mol) and endothermic (Δ H = 28.4 kJ/mol), with a positive entropy change (Δ S = 0.14 kJ/(mol·K)) suggesting increased randomness at the solid–liquid interface. This work provides an efficient, stable, and cost-effective engineering solution for heavy metal-laden wastewater treatment.

Manganese Superoxide Dismutase Coordinating to Fe(II) and Cu(II): Efficient Hydroxyl Radical Generation for Degradation of Contaminants and Antibacterial Application

Siyu Mao,Yaqi Fu,Jiaxing Wei,Yichuan Wang,Wei Feng

Manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH). In this study, SOD was encapsulated via coordination with Cu(II), Fe(II), and phosphate in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) to form a hybrid material denoted as SOD@Cu&Fe&PO 4 . Our study demonstrates that SOD and the coordinated Cu(II)/Fe(II) ions exert a synergistic catalytic effect on •OH generation during H 2 O 2 decomposition. This synergistic behavior stems from the dynamic interplay between the production and consumption of superoxide anion radicals (O 2 •− ). Specifically, O 2 •− is generated as an intermediate in the reactions of coordinated Cu(II) and Fe(II) with H 2 O 2 . The in situ generated O 2 •− is subsequently utilized by encapsulated SOD, which in turn reduces Mn 3 + at the enzyme's active site to Mn 2 + . A continuous supply of O 2 •− to SOD accelerates the Mn 3 + /Mn 2 + redox cycle at its active center. Concurrently, the timely removal of O 2 •− from the Cu(II)/Fe(II)–H 2 O 2 reaction system eliminates the potential inhibition of O 2 •− accumulation, thereby promoting the Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycles. As a result, SOD@Cu&Fe&PO 4 affords a significantly enhanced •OH generation capacity. Moreover, this hybrid material exhibits enhanced contaminant degradation efficiency and potent antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli (MDR E. coli ) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Graphical O 2 •− is generated as an intermediate in the reactions of coordinated Cu(II) and Fe(II) with H 2 O 2 .

Individual and Simultaneous Voltammetric Determination of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) Applying Amino Functionalized Fe3O4@Carbon Microspheres Modified Electrode

Fan Bai,Xinhao Zhang,Xinmei Hou,Huijuan Liu,Junhong Chen,Tao Yang

Amino-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @carbon microspheres (NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C) were prepared and the electrochemical sensor was constructed using NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) to determine toxic heavy metals in aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the structure and phase of NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified GCE possesses large active area and excellent electron transfer. Under optimized electrochemical condition, Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) were determined using NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified GCE. The electrode through amino functionalization exhibits higher sensitivity and lower detection limit toward Cd(II) and Cu(II) due to the acid-base pairing interaction between the electron-rich −NH 2 ligand and the electron-deficient heavy metal ions. Compared with other similar results reported in the literature, the NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified electrode exhibits wider linear response range while with comparable lower detection limit. It also exhibits excellent stability, reproducibility and anti-interference ability.

A diamond/graphite nanoplatelets electrode for anodic stripping voltammetric trace determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II)

Zhaofeng Zhai,Nan Huang,Hao Zhuang,Lusheng Liu,Bing Yang,Chun Wang,Zhigang Gai,Fengxiang Guo,Zhengjun Li,Xin Jiang

A platform for the determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) has been proposed based on a novel diamond/graphite (D/G) nanoplatelets film electrode using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry method. The microstructure and the composition of the film were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The D/G nanoplatelets structure with two-dimensional diamond nanoplatelet as the stem and highly conducting graphite layers as shells exhibits large specific surface and great electrical conductivity, significantly enhancing the electron transport in the electrochemical reaction. Under the optimum conditions, wide linear ranges and high sensitivity were achieved. In the typical detection process, two linear working ranges were obtained due to the incomplete anodic removal and the limits of detection (LODs) were estimated to be 1.72 μg L −1 , 0.47 μg L −1 , 4.86 μg L −1 and 0.45 μg L −1 for Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. The simultaneous detections also verify the superior analytical performance with linear ranges from 10 μg L −1 to 250 μg L −1 and low LODs. Herein, we present a novel diamond/graphite nanoplatelets electrode without any modification/functionalization for the sensitive detection of trace heavy metal ions .

Generation of reactive oxygen species by promoting the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycle with reducing agents in aerobic aqueous solution

Li Wenshu,Zhou Peng,Zhang Jing,Zhang Yongli,Zhang Gucheng,Liu Yang,Cheng Xin

This study investigated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (O 2 − •, H 2 O 2 , and HO•) by promoting the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycle with certain reducing agents (RAs) in aerobic aqueous solution, and benzoic acid (BA) was employed as indicator for the hydroxyl radical (HO•). Hydroxylamine (HA) can reduce Cu(II) to Cu(I) to induce chain reactions of copper species resulting in the generation of the superoxide radical (O 2 − •) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), and the intermediate Cu(I) can further activate H 2 O 2 via a Fenton-like reaction to produce HO•, creating the remarkable BA degradation. O 2 is indispensable, and unprotonated HA is the motive power in the O 2 /Cu/HA system. Moreover, pH is a crucial factor of the O 2 /Cu/HA system due to the protonated HA not being able to reduce Cu(II) into Cu(I). The oxidation of HA can be effectively induced by trace amounts of Cu(II), and both a higher HA dosage and a higher Cu(II) dosage can enhance H 2 O 2 generation and BA degradation. In addition, some other RAs that can reduce Cu(II) into Cu(I) could replace HA in the O 2 /Cu/HA system to induce the generation of these ROS in aerobic aqueous solution.

Selective adsorption of Cu(II) from an aqueous solution by ion imprinted magnetic chitosan microspheres prepared from steel pickling waste liquor

Yuling Cai,Liuchun Zheng,Zhanqiang Fang

To reduce costs and improve practicability, an ion imprinted magnetic chitosan (IMCS) was synthesized through co-precipitation using steel pickling waste liquor and chitosan and Cu(II) as template ions, which was then characterized by TEM, SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD and VSM. The batch experiments were carried out for its potential application and high selectivity of Cu(II) removal, which were observed due to the paramagnetic properties and coordination reactions in the imprinted cavities. Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo second-order model and the equilibrium data fit perfectly with the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 109.89 mg g−1. Negative values for ΔH0 and ΔG0 indicated an exothermic and spontaneous adsorption process. The adsorption process was found to be a chemical reaction and coordination complexes were formed between the metal ions and the groups of chitosan binding mainly in the “bridge model”. Moreover, 0.2 mol L−1 HCl solution was considered as the most appropriate eluent for regeneration. It showed a great performance in the experiments for practical copper wastewater and the process was considerably cost-effective.

Steel slag as a cost-effective adsorbent for synergic removal of collectors, Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions from flotation wastewaters

Lianghua Wang,Pingfeng Fu,Yanhong Ma,Xuejin Zhang,Yabao Zhang,Xiumin Yang

Flotation reagents and heavy metal ions always coexist in mineral flotation wastewaters, arousing serious environmental issues or having deleterious effects on mineral flotation. In this work, the steel slag was adopted as a cost-effective adsorbent to synergically remove butyl xanthate (BX), diethyl dithiocarbamate (DDTC), Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions. At the steel slag dosage of 12.0 g/L, Cu(II) and Pb(II) concentrations decreased from 4.0 mg/L to below 10.0 μg/L, and the removal of COD reached 54.33%. The removal efficiency of COD increased from 11.36% to 57.49% as Cu(II) and Pb(II) concentrations rose from 0 to 8.0 mg/L, revealing the promotion effects of metallic ions on collector adsorption. The maximum uptake capacity of steel slag reached 110.45 and 160.48 mg/g for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The collector adsorption capacity of steel slag increased nearly two magnitudes after modifying with the uptake of Cu(II) or Pb(II) ions. The SEM/EDS, XPS and FTIR analysis indicated that steel slag could be in-situ modified to generate copper or lead hydroxides and oxides during the removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions. Subsequently, these precipitates acted as reactive sites for chelating BX and DDTC to form indissolvable metal-collector chelates. Owing to in-situ modification of steel slag by uptaking metallic ions, the adsorption was potentially feasible for treating flotation wastewaters.
