Visual detection of tumor markers with accuracy and selectivity exhibits significant advantages for cancer early diagnosis due to its low-cost and simple analytical instruments. Herein, a highly photosensitive colorimetric immunoassay for carcino embryonie antigen (CEA, as a model) detection based on Cu 2+ doped Ag-AgI nanocomposite was constructed. First, Cu 2+ doped Ag-AgI nanocomposite (Cu 2+ /Ag-AgI) owned the ability of oxidization of TMB was synthesized by impregnation method, which was characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Second, based on sandwich-type immunoassay, the immunocomplex was built on the surface of magnetic bead by utilizing Cu 2+ /Ag-AgI as labels. The blue color of TMB ox was obtained under visible irradiation and ultraviolet spectrum scanning was carried out in ABS buffer solution. Under optimal conditions, the absorbance values increased with the increasing of CEA concentrations in sample with the linearity range of 1.0 pg mL −1 −5.0 ng mL −1 . The detection limit was 0.13 pg mL −1 . More importantly, the developed colorimetric immunoassay exhibited good selectivity, repeatability, stability and possible applications in the real serum sample analysis.

Surface functionalization of nanomaterials with specific recognition units is a promising strategy to structurally novel nanosensors for target analysis and bioimaging. In this study, a fluorescent nanosensor has been successfully synthesized by conjugating thiosemicarbazide with carbon dots (CDs) through amide bonds. The functional CDs have a relatively narrow size distribution of about 1.6–4.0 nm. The CDs exhibit a highly specific recognition capability towards copper ions (Cu2+) over other competing metal ions, and the maximum quenching rate reaches 68.7%. A good linear correlation is also established between F0/F with the Cu2+ concentration ranging from 0 to 0.4 μM and the detection limit is 3.47 nM. On account of their strong fluorescence intensity, excellent water solubility, low toxicity and good biocompatibility the nanosensor demonstrates its biolabeling potential in vivo, which might have high significance in bioanalysis and biomedical detection in the future.

A novel graphene oxide membrane (GOM) was prepared using the vacuum filtration-induced directional flow method. The properties of GOM were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction instrument, transmission electron microscope, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy apparatus. The adsorptive properties of Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Ni 2+ onto GOM were systematically investigated in single, binary and ternary solutions by batch experiments. In a single system, the maximum adsorption capacities of Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Ni 2+ obtained by the Langmuir model were 1.21, 0.81 and 1.08 mmol/g, respectively. The isotherms results for Cu 2+ indicated that GOM exhibited good selectivity in the adsorption of Cu 2+ over Cd 2+ and Ni 2+ . The adsorption capacity followed the order of Cu 2+ > Ni 2+ > Cd 2+ in binary systems. For ternary system, the order of the adsorption capacity was Cu 2+ > Cd 2+ > Ni 2+ . Previously adsorbed metal ions on GOM could be displaced by subsequently adsorbed metal ions from the solution. The difference in hard and soft acids and bases of Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Ni 2+ solutions was identified as the main reason for GOM to be able to selectively adsorb favorable metal ions during competitive adsorption in binary systems. This interaction mechanism between the favorable component and other metal ions could be the primary cause of direct displacement.

Biomacromolecular probes have been extensively employed in the detection of metal ions for their prominent biocompatibility, water solubility, high selectivity, and easy modification of fluorescent groups. In this study, a fluorescent probe FP was constructed. The probe FP exhibited high specificity recognition for Cu2+. With the combination of Cu2+, the probe was subjected to fluorescence quenching. The research suggested that the probe FP carried out the highly sensitive detection of Cu2+with detection limits of 1.7 nM. The fluorescence quenching of fluorescamine was induced by Cu2+perhaps due to the PET (photoinduced electron transfer) mechanism. The FP-Cu2+complex shows weak fluorescence, which is likely due to the PET quenching effect from Cu2+to fluorescamine fluorophore. Moreover, the probe FP can be employed for imaging Cu2+in living cells. The new fluorescent probe developed in this study shows the advantages of good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. It can be adopted for the targeted detection of Cu2+in cells, and it has promising applications in the mechanism research and diagnosis of Cu2+-associated diseases.

Performance enhancement of Fe-C materials for Cu 2+ removal, removal capacity, and pH range of applicability is achieved through the environmentally friendly, long-lasting magnetic fields in this study. Specifically, the utilization of the magnetic field to the Fe-C materials significantly improves the performance of Cu 2+ removal in contrast to the single Fe-C, which also brings about improvement under various water condition parameters. The concentrations of Cu 2+ , Cu + , Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ in solution were monitored, and the relevant properties of Fe-C materials were characterised. Results showed that Cu 2+ was removed by reduction of Fe-C material either in solution or after adsorption onto the surface of the material. Additionally, the magnetic field accelerated the exposure of the active sites present in the material, leading to the acceleration of adsorption of Fe-C to Cu 2+ for reduction and removal, as well as accelerating mass transfer. In addition, the magnetic field facilitated Fe-C materials' active sites and expedited the adsorption of Fe-C onto Cu 2+ for reduction and removal, as well as accelerated mass transport. Furthermore, it was verified that MF maintained a positive reinforcing impact on the Fe-C micro-electrolysis system for eliminating other heavy metal ions, with a particular emphasis on paramagnetic heavy metal ions. This research has expanded our understanding of the mechanism underlying Fe-C/MF micro-electrolysis system, and aided in the application in Fe-C/MF micro-electrolysis system for the remediation of heavy metal ions present in water environment.

An efficient fluorescein based probe (H 2 L) for the dual sensing of Al 3+ and Cu 2 + has been synthesized and characterized. H 2 L was highly selective toward these two ions with different fluorescence signals and binding modes in two different media. In EtOH-H 2 O (3:2, v/v; pH 4.0), H 2 L selectively binds Al 3+ to form a 1:1 ligand/metal complex, giving rise to a visible pale pink-to-yellow color change and fluorescence enhancement at 440 nm, while in CH 3 CN-H 2 O (2:3, v/v; pH 7.2), H 2 L and Cu 2+ form a 1:2 ratio complex, resulting in a color change from pink to orange-yellow and a significant fluorescence enhancement at 520 nm. The binding modes were confirmed by fluorescence, absorption, IR, ESI-MS and 1 H NMR titrations. The detection limits were calculated to be 7.32 × 10 −8 M and 1.47 × 10 −8 M for Al 3+ and Cu 2+ , respectively. Cell imaging studies demonstrate that this sensor is capable of sensing Al 3+ and Cu 2+ in living cells.

The accumulation of coal gangue (CG), a byproduct of coal mining, poses severe environmental challenges. This study presents a green strategy to convert CG into high-value NaX zeolite via an alkali fusion–hydrothermal method. Through orthogonal experiments, the optimal synthesis conditions (solid–liquid ratio 1:8, crystallization temperature 110 °C, time 12 h) were identified, yielding NaX zeolite with exceptional crystallinity (98%), specific surface area (703.5 m2/g), and pore volume (0.28 cm3/g). Comprehensive characterization (XRD, SEM-EDS, BET, etc.) confirmed its structural integrity and thermal stability. The synthesized zeolite exhibited remarkable adsorption capacities for Cu2+(185.35 mg/g) and CO2(5.51 mmol/g), following the Langmuir isotherm model. This work not only addresses gangue disposal challenges but also demonstrates a cost-effective route for producing high-performance adsorbents, aligning with circular economy and carbon neutrality goals.

In this study, a novel CdSe@PEI-PVP luminescent hydrogel was constructed by using MPA-CdSe quantum dots (QDs) as a single emitter and hydrogen bond cross-linking network between highly branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a hydrogel skeleton, in which PEI also works as a passivation ligand for MPA-CdSe quantum dots. Utilizing the dual emission of MPA-CdSe quantum dots and adjusting the surface state of MPA-CdSe with PEI and Cd 2+ , CdSe@PEI-PVP hydrogel can emit bright white light as a whole. Furthermore, CdSe@PEI-PVP shows specific recognition for Cu 2+ , luminescent color changes from bright white to orange when Cu 2+ is added, which enables CdSe@PEI-PVP hydrogel to serve as a fluorescent probe for ion detection. The luminescent hydrogel has great self-healing ability and reversible morphological thermal responsiveness, existing as a white luminescent hydrogel at room temperatures and transforming into a pale green luminescent solution at high temperatures.

Photocatalytic technology is an attractive option for environmental remediation because of its green and sustainable nature. However, the inefficient utilization of solar energy and powder morphology currently impede its practical application. Here, we designed a floatable photocatalyst by anchoring 0D Cu2(OH)PO4 (CHP) nanoparticles on 2D graphene to construct 0D/2D CHP/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogels. The CHP/rGO aerogels have interconnected mesopores that provide a large surface area, promoting particle dispersion and increasing the number of active sites. Moreover, the optical response of the CHP/rGO aerogel has been significantly expanded to cover the full spectrum of the solar light. Notably, the 20%CHP/rGO aerogel displayed a high degradation rate (k = 0.178 min–1) taking methylene blue (MB) as a model pollutant under light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The enhanced photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the rapid electron transfer in the CHP/rGO heterostructures, as supported by the DFT theoretical calculations. Our research highlights the utilization of full spectrum responsive photocatalysts for the elimination of organic pollutants from wastewater under solar light irradiation, as well as the potential for catalyst recovery using floatable aerogels to meet industrial requirements.

Depletion and separation of histidine-rich proteins from complicated biosamples are crucial for various downstream applications in proteome research and clinical diagnosis. Herein, porous polymer microspheres coated with polyacrylic acid (SPSDVB-PAA) were fabricated through double emulsion interfacial polymerization technique and followed by immobilization of Cu 2+ ions on the surface of SPSDVB-PAA. The as-prepared SPSDVB-PAA-Cu with uniform size and nanoscale pore structure enabled coordination interaction of Cu 2+ with histidine residues in his-rich proteins, resulting in high-performance adsorption. As metal affinity adsorbent, the SPSDVB-PAA-Cu exhibited favorable selectivity for adsorbing hemoglobin (Hb) and human serum albumin (HSA) with the maximum adsorption capacities of 152.2 and 100.7 mg g −1 . Furthermore, the polymer microspheres were used to isolate histidine-rich proteins from human whole blood and plasma, underscoring their effectiveness. The liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) results indicated that the content of 14 most abundant proteins in human plasma was depleted from 81.6 % to 30.7 % and low-abundance proteins were enriched from 18.4 % to 69.3 % after treatment with SPSDVB-PAA-Cu, illustrating potential application of SPSDVB-PAA-Cu in proteomic research.

The detection of copper ion (Cu2+) has become a long-term and arduous task in the field of environmental monitoring and human health. Current methods based on branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) for the detection of Cu2+ more or less suffer from being time-consuming and having a high cost or complex surface modifications. Herein, an ultra-facile and rapid colorimetric method was explored to detect Cu2+ in 100% aqueous solution by a direct format using only BPEI. Cu2+ could be captured by BPEI and form BPEI–Cu2+ complexes, which resulted in a color change from colorless to blue within 5 s, associated with the strong absorption peak at 278 nm. The lower the molecular weight and the concentration of BPEI are, the lower the detection limit is. When the molecular weight and the concentration of BPEI were 600 and 21.5 mg L−1, respectively, the detection limit was calculated to be 1.21 μM, and the linear range was 2 μM to 50 μM. Besides, BPEI also had an excellent selectivity toward Cu2+. This ultra-facile, rapid and inexpensive method offers great potential for various applications in biomedicine, environmental protection, food safety and so on.

Cost-effective manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) promises the economical advantage of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) but suffers its low electrical conductivity, the irreversibility of structural transformations during electrochemical reactions, and the slow kinetics of the reactions. This study employs a one-step co-precipitation technique to synthesize Cu 2+ intercalated δ-MnO 2 nanoflower. The intercalation of Cu 2+ not only enlarges the interlayer spacing through the interaction with water molecules, but also strengthens the interlayer structure with Cu 2+ as the pillars, improves the ionic conductivity, and enhances the rate capability of δ-MnO 2 . It is attributed to the co-insertion/extraction mechanism of Zn 2+ /H + . Therefore, the Cu 2+ intercalation δ-MnO 2 developed for ZIBs demonstrates a high specific capacity (300 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), long cycling stability (179 mAh g −1 until 2000 cycles at 1 A g −1 89.9 % capacity retention), and superior rate capability (195 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 ). Meanwhile, the flexible ZIBs assembled with this cathode material have wider commercial applicability.
