CuO doped Ba 0.8 Sr 0.1 Ca 0.1 Ti 0.95 Zr 0.05 O 3 (BSCTZ) ceramics were prepared by a modified mechano-chemical activation technique with the aim of improving energy storage properties for ceramic capacitor applications. CuO can effectively improve the microstructural characteristics along with a transformation of BSCTZ from classical ferroelectric to relaxor, which is the prime requirement for obtaining high discharge energy density and energy efficiency. The effect of CuO doping on the microstructural, ferroelectric, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties have been systematically studied. The study reveals that an appropriate amount of CuO doping can significantly enhance the morphological properties along with improvement in material density, which is very beneficial in a material for attaining improved energy storage performance. The BSCTZ sample with 3 mol% CuO doping has shown a highly dense microstructure, high saturation polarization (33.01 μC/cm 2 ), low remnant polarization (6.74 μC/cm 2 ), ultrahigh discharge energy density (1.81 J/cm 3 ) and high energy efficiency (81.9%). The CuO doping in BSCTZ has also led to a slight improvement in breakdown strength and electromechanical properties compared to pure BSCTZ ceramics, which is mainly attributed to excellent density and optimum grain size of the material.

This study focus on the combustion performance and energy released of self-propagating Al/CuO nanothermite with nanorod structure comprehensively. CuO nanorods with lengths of 50 nm–100 nm were synthesized in large scale by template-free hydrothermal method . Al/CuO nanothermite coatings were further built successfully by co-deposition of the as-prepared CuO nanorods and nano-Al via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Additionally, the EPD kinetic behavior of CuO nanorods and Al/CuO composites is investigated comprehensively. The optimum deposition time is 15 min and the composites is much homogenous when equivalence ratio (Ф) of Al and CuO is 0.75. Furthermore, the onset temperature is down to 315 °C and the energy release is approximately 3043 J/g along with rapid and violent combustion performance in the thermite reaction of Al/CuO nanorods. It is speculated that the excellent properties of the Al/CuO nanothermite could be ascribed to the uniform distributing and intimate interfacial contact between nano-Al and CuO nanorods.

The development of lithium-ion batteries using transition metal oxides has recently become more attractive, due to their higher specific capacities, better rate capability, and high energy densities. Herein, the in situ growth of advanced mesoporous CuO/O-doped g-C3N4 nanospheres is carried out in a two step hydrothermal process at 180 °C and annealing in air at 300 °C. When used as an anode material, the CuO/O-doped g-C3N4 nanospheres achieve a high reversible discharge specific capacity of 738 mAhg–1 and a capacity retention of ∼75.3% after 100 cycles at a current density 100 mAg–1 compared with the pure CuO (412 mAhg–1, 47%) and O-doped g-C3N4 (66 mAhg–1, 53%). Even at high current density 1 Ag–1, they exhibit a reversible discharge specific capacity of 503 mAhg–1 and capacity retention ∼80% over 500 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of the CuO/O-doped g-C3N4 nanocomposite is attributed to the following factors: (I) the in situ growing CuO/O-doped g-C3N4 avoids CuO nanoparticle aggregation, leading to the improved lithium ion transfer and electrolyte penetration inside the CuO/O-doped g-C3N4 anode, thus promoting the utilization of CuO; (II) the porous structure provides efficient space for Li+ transfer during the insertion/extraction process to avoid large volume changes; (III) the O-doping g-C3N4 decreases its band gap, ensuring the increased electrical conductivity of CuO/O-doped g-C3N4; and (IV) the strong interaction between CuO and O-doped g-C3N4 ensures the stability of the structure during cycling.

In this study, CuO-CeO 2 was synthesized via an easy hydrothermal-calcination method and innovatively applied to peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for pollutants degradation under a non-radical oxidation pathway. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the dominated reactive oxygen species in the CuO-CeO 2 /PMS system, leading to a dramatical degradation efficiency with Rhodamine B (RhB) as model compounds. The observed rate constant of the CuO-CeO 2 /PMS system was 7–11 times higher than that of only PMS , CeO 2 /PMS and CuO/PMS systems. Also, under the reaction conditions of 1.6 mM PMS, 0.4 g/L catalyst and initial pH 7, the degradation efficiencies of RhB, Methylene Blue , Reactive Blue 19 and atrazine were respectively up to 100%, 85.39%, 72.84% and 98.44% in 60 min. X-ray photoelectron microscopy analysis indicated that the electrons transfer between CuO and CeO 2 and the formation of oxygen vacancy in CeO 2 should be responsible for the enhanced 1 O 2 production, which involved a new non-radical oxidation pathway for PMS activation by CuO-CeO 2 catalyst. Moreover, the combination of CuO and CeO 2 increased reusability and stability of catalyst, allowing it remove more than 92% of RhB over a wide pH range (pH = 3–9). This study not only proved that CuO-CeO 2 is an efficient and stable PMS activator but also provided a new insight into PMS activation through a non-radical oxidation pathway for organic contaminants removal from wastewater.

Metal nanowires have become an inevitable candidate for the next generation transparent conductive electrodes due to the high conductivity, transparency and flexibility. Here, copper nanowires (Cu NWs) with good uniformity were prepared in sequence by electrospinning technology, calcination and ethanol vapor phase reduction. Through adjusting vapor temperature accurately, the optimized Cu NWs with large aspect ratio of above 10 5 , a low sheet resistance down to 51.4 Ω/口and a high transmittance of 80% in visible spectra were prepared. Inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells with Cu NWs network as transparent electrodes were designed and a power conversion efficiency of 5.32% was achieved when the coverage of Cu NWs was 22%.

Hollow-ZSM-5 was synthesized by a traditional hydrothermal method without alcohol, and a novel na-no-sized Ce-Cu/hollow ZSM-5 sample was prepared by conventional incipient wetness impreganation. The catalysts were characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, NMR and N 2 adsorption-desorption. The results indicate that the hollow-ZSM-5 has a good MFI structure with large surface area. The synthesized CeO 2 -CuO/hollow ZSM-5 showed an excellent catalytic activity for NO x conversion(90% NO x conversion were obtained) in the temperature range of 340–550 °C under GHSV=480000 mL·g ‒1 ·h ‒1 due to its appropriate redox ability and acidity.

The effect of several catalyst supports with large specific surface area (such as SiC, Al 2 O 3 , SiC–Al 2 O 3 –ball, and SiC–Al 2 O 3 ) on catalytic activity was evaluated in this study. CuO–CeO 2 supported on SiC–Al 2 O 3 exhibited high stability and activity, which was considerably close to the thermodynamic equilibrium curve at 625 °C during the stability test for 50 h. The SO 3 decomposition temperature decreased from 750 °C to 625 °C. SiC–Al 2 O 3 contained numerous micropores and mesopores and had a large specific area, indicating strong adsorption, as determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption measurement. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the surface of SiC–Al 2 O 3 consisted of Al 2 O 3 , SiC, and SiO 2 and that the cerium oxide surface had the largest number of defects. Temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) results indicated that the cerium–copper oxides on the surface of powdered SiC–Al 2 O 3 had the strongest redox potential and that CuO had the lowest reduction temperature.

Manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (OMS-2) supported CuO catalysts were synthesized, characterized and used in the removal of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in aqueous solution by an oxidation process involving peroxymonosulfate (PMS). It was found that the CuO species were highly dispersed in OMS-2 with a high ratio of easily reduced surface oxygen species. The synergetic effect between CuO and OMS-2 significantly improved the dye degradation rate and catalytic stability, compared with CuO, OMS-2 and supported CuO on other materials. About 97% of the dye was removed within 15 min at neutral solution pH by using 0.2 g/L of CuO/OMS-2 and PMS. The effect of initial solution pH, PMS concentration, reaction temperature and CuO content in the composites on AO7 degradation was also investigated. Mechanism study indicated that SO 4 − radicals generated from the interaction between PMS and Mn and Cu species with different oxidation states, mainly accounted for the degradation.

In this study, an energetic material was prepared by depositing nano-Al on CuO arrays via electrophoretic deposition (EPD), which offers a feasible route for nano-Al integration. The morphology and structure of the CuO arrays and Al/CuO composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The CuO arrays were homogenously salix leaf-like structure with a width of ~150 to 200 nm. The energy density of Al/CuO composites was approximate to 1454.5 J/g by integrating the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) plot and the combustion performance was recorded by a high-speed camera. Moreover, the combustion flames were violent and the whole reaction process only lasted 72.2 ms, indicating that the energy of the Al/CuO nanothermite can be released effectively.

Hetero-structured functional materials with tailored composition that can provide excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption with minimal thickness are highly desirable, especially if they can be easily fabricated. Herein, novel hetero-structured CoNi–CuO composite microspheres were fabricated via a facile solvothermal process. The composites with adjusted mass ratios of CuO to CoNi alloy (5/1, 2.5/1 and 1.25/1) were facilely achieved by modulating the quantity of CuCl2·2H2O during the synthesis. It was demonstrated that the enhanced microwave absorption properties could be ascribed to the dielectric CuO, which can favorably increase the interface of the hetero-structure and the impedance matching with CoNi alloyed particles. It was shown that, when the molar ratio was 2.5 : 1, the typical CoNi–CuO composite microspheres presented a promising microwave absorption performance, namely a maximum reflection loss (RL) of −25.1 dB at 13.2 GHz with a thickness of only 2.5 mm, while the effective microwave absorption bandwidth (RL < −10) could reach 3.4 GHz (from 10.0 to 13.4 GHz). As is demonstrated, this kind of newly fabricated CoNi–CuO composite can be regarded as a promising candidate for high-performance microwave absorption materials.

BACKGROUND Ralstonia solanacearum , a notorious and refractory bacterial plant pathogen, threatens multiple vegetable crops and causes significant economic loss in agriculture. Long-term use of traditional medicines not only increases the problem of drug resistance, but also causes great environmental pollution. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new agents with high efficacy and low toxicity. RESULTS In this study, we have synthesized and characterized graphitic carbon nitride incorporated copper oxide composite (g-C 3 N 4 @CuO), which showed higher antimicrobial effect than graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs). Ralstonia solanacearum exposed to g-C 3 N 4 @CuO exhibited higher levels of oxygen toxicity, cell membrane damage, DNA damage, motility disruption and even cell death compared to g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and CuONPs. In addition, g-C 3 N 4 @CuO was more effective in the control of tobacco bacterial wilt than g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and CuONPs. CONCLUSION Thus, this study provides a new perspective on g-C 3 N 4 @CuO control of bacterial diseases in crops, and the mechanism is related to the destruction of cell membrane damage and motility disruption. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Developing highly efficient photocatalysts for the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care product residues is of significance and challenge. Herein, a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)/metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheet/CuO heterostructure was successfully constructed via electrostatic self-assembly and in situ growth strategies. The heterostructure at ultralow doses (6 mg) displayed the highest tetracycline (TC, 20 mg/L) degradation efficiency of 78.8% under visible light within 27 min. Moreover, this heterostructure maintained a good TC degradation efficiency after four cycles. Experimental data and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the good photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared heterostructure is attributed to the positively charged MOF sheet interlayer and the coupling effect between the g-C3N4, MOF nanosheet and CuO, which can enrich electrons, ions, molecules, and block holes to greatly improve the rapid separation of photogenerated carriers from g-C3N4 or CuO and the adsorption of reactants. The types of reactive oxygen species and effects of inorganic ions on photocatalytic performance were further studied. This work presented a novel strategy to construct a self-assembled heterostructure for visible photocatalytic applications.
