Multiform Sulfur Adsorption Centers and Copper-Terminated Active Sites of Nano-CuS for Efficient Elemental Mercury Capture from Coal Combustion Flue Gas

Zequn Yang,Hailong Li,Shihao Feng,Pu Li,Chen Liao,Xi Liu,Jiexia Zhao,Jianping Yang,Po-Heng Lee,Kaimin Shih

Nanostructured copper sulfide synthesized with the assistance of surfactant with nanoscale particle size and high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area was for the first time applied for the capture of elemental mercury (Hg0) from coal combustion flue gas. The optimal operation temperature of nano-CuS for Hg0 adsorption is 75 °C, which indicates that injection of the sorbent between the wet flue gas desulfurization and the wet electrostatic precipitator systems is feasible. This assures that the sorbent is free of the adverse influence of nitrogen oxides. Oxygen (O2) and sulfur dioxide exerted a slight influence on Hg0 adsorption over the nano-CuS. Water vapor was shown to moderately suppress Hg0 capture efficiency via competitive adsorption. The simulated adsorption capacities of nano-CuS for Hg0 under pure nitrogen (N2), N2 + 4% O2, and simulated flue gas reached 122.40, 112.06, and 89.43 mgHg0/g nano-CuS, respectively. Compared to those of traditional commercial activated carbons and metal sulfides, the simulated adsorption capacities of Hg0 over the nano-CuS are at least an order of magnitude higher. Moreover, with only 5 mg loaded in a fixed-bed reactor, the Hg0 adsorption rate reached 11.93–13.56 μg/g min over nano-CuS. This extremely speedy rate makes nano-CuS promising for a future sorbent injection technique. The anisotropic growth of nano-CuS was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and provided a fundamental aspect for nano-CuS surface reconstruction and polysulfide formation. Further X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Hg0 temperature-programmed desorption tests showed that the active polysulfide, S–S dimers, and copper-terminated sites contributed primarily to the extremely high Hg0 adsorption capacity and rate. With these advantages, nano-CuS appears to be a highly promising alternative to traditional sorbents for Hg0 capture from coal combustion flue gas.

Controllable and large-scale fabrication of rectangular CuS network films for indium tin oxide-and Pt-free flexible dye-sensitized solar cells

Zijie Xu,Teng Li,Qian Liu,Fayin Zhang,Xiaodan Hong,Shuyao Xie,Changxu Lin,Xiangyang Liu,Wenxi Guo

Here we present a highly flexible and large-area CuS transparent conductive film (TCF) fabricated by colloidal crackle pattern as a counter electrode (CE) for flexible dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). This rectangular CuS TCF can be fabricated on arbitrary flexible substrates at low temperature and exhibits superior mechanical robustness in bending cycling measurement. The transmittance and conductivity can be accurately controlled by controlling the sizes and shapes of the crackle patterns, ~ 90% transmittance can be achieved when the sheet resistances (R s ) are ~ 60   Ω sq −1 . Moreover, such CuS TCF has strong receivable ability of pH (1−13) and temperature changes (0–100   °C). In the application of DSSC as CE, the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses of the CuS networks exhibit a comparable electrocatalytic behavior with the platinum (Pt) networks on polyethylene terephthalate (PET), yielding a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.54% for DSSC based on CuS networks as CE and retaining > 90% PCE after 500 bending cycles. Such CuS TCF with high transparency, flexibility, conductivity and electrochemical catalytic ability shows great potentials in other wearable, light-weight electrochemical cells .

Structural Engineering of Hollow Microflower-like CuS@C Hybrids as Versatile Electrochemical Sensing Platform for Highly Sensitive Hydrogen Peroxide and Hydrazine Detection

Xiaoqing Ma,Kang-lai Tang,Kang Lu,Chenke Zhang,Wenbing Shi,Wenxi Zhao

Designing metal sulfides with unique configurations and exploring their electrochemical activities for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydrazine (N2H4) is challenging and desirable for various fields. Herein, hollow microflower-like CuS@C hybrids were successfully assembled and further exploited as a versatile electrochemical sensing platform for H2O2 reduction and N2H4 oxidation, of which the elaborate strategies make the perfect formation of hollow architecture, providing considerable electrocatalytic sites and fast charge transfer rate, while the appropriate introduction polydopamine-derived carbon skeleton facilitates the electronic conductivity and boosts structural robustness, thus generating wide linear range (0.05–14 and 0.01–10 mM), low detection limit (0.22 μM and 0.07 μM), and a rather low overpotential (−0.15 and −0.05 V) toward H2O2 and N2H4, as well as good selectivity, excellent reproducibility, and admirable long-term stability. It should be highlighted that the operating potentials can compare favorably with those of some reported H2O2 and N2H4 sensors based on noble metals. In addition, good recoveries and acceptable relative standard deviations (RSDs) attained in serum and water samples fully verify the accuracy and anti-interference capability of our proposed sensor systems. These results not only elucidate an effective structural nanoengineering strategy for electroanalytical science but also advance the rational utilization of H2O2 and N2H4 in practicability.

CuS@PDA–FA nanocomposites: a dual stimuli-responsive DOX delivery vehicle with ultrahigh loading level for synergistic photothermal–chemotherapies on breast cancer

Shang-Qing Zhang,Xun Liu,Qi-Xuan Sun,Omar Johnson,Ting Yang,Ming-Li Chen,Jian-Hua Wang,Wei Chen

In this study, CuS@PDA nanoparticles were synthesized and used to create a novel tumor-targeting nanocomposite platform composed of copper sulfide@polydopamine–folic acid/doxorubicin (CuS@PDA–FA/DOX) for performing both photothermal and chemotherapeutic cancer treatment. The nanocomposite platform has ultrahigh loading levels (4.2 ± 0.2 mg mg−1) and a greater photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 42.7%) than CuS/PDA alone. The uptake of CuS@PDA–FA/DOX nanocomposites is much higher in MCF-7 cells than in A549 cells because MCF-7 cells have much higher folic acid receptors than A549. Under near infrared (NIR) irradiation, the CuS@PDA–FA/DOX system using a synergistic combination of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy yields a better therapeutic effect than either photothermal therapy or chemotherapy alone. The treatment is very effective with the cell viability is only 5.6 ± 1.4%.

Composite phase change materials based on CuS-coated carbonized melamine foam/reduced graphene oxide frameworks for multiple energy conversion and storage applications

Sijia Hao,Yongjin Zou,Cuili Xiang,Lixian Sun,Fen Xu,Zhicong Hu

The single function and leakage of organic phase change materials (OPCMs) used alone considerably limit the scope of their large-scale applications. An efficient method of addressing this issue is by adding functional fillers and porous scaffolds to OPCMs. In this study, a novel CuS-coated carbonized melamine foam (CMF)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) framework (CMF/rGO/CuS) was developed for the preparation of stable multifunctional OPCMs. The functional materials rGO and CuS were used as reinforcing materials, and CMF was used as a supporting material. Paraffin wax (PW), a thermal storage substance, was encapsulated in the CMF/rGO/CuS framework by vacuum-assisted impregnation to obtain a PW@CMF/rGO/CuS composite with excellent comprehensive properties. When the concentration of the conductive filler CuS was 2.0 wt%, the conductivity of the PW@CMF/rGO/CuS 2.0was 73.7 % more than that of pure PW, and its photothermal conversion efficiency exceeded 90 %. Meanwhile, CMF/rGO/CuS endowed the composite with a thermal conductivity of 0.2525 W m −1  K −1 , which was 33.6 % higher than that of pure PW. Finally, PW@CMF/rGO/CuS demonstrated high thermal cycling and thermal cycling stability with good application prospects in various fields.

One-step hydrothermal preparation of a novel 2D MXene-based composite electrode material synergistically modified by CuS and carbon dots for supercapacitors

Yuchun Li,Jiachen Liu,Tianle Gong,Changzhi Liang,Lin Li,Xuemei Lin,Zongrong Ying,Huangyan Liu

2D material MXene is one of the most interesting electrode materials due to its vast range of potential applications in electrochemical energy storage and conversion in recent years. Herein we fabricated a novel 2D MXene-based composite electrode material by using hydrothermally synthetized CuS and carbon dots (CDs) to synergistically decorate Ti 3 C 2 T x . The introduction of CuS and CDs increases the interlayer spacing of Ti 3 C 2 T x , which reduces the stacking of Ti 3 C 2 Tx unfavorable to the electrochemical performance. The optimal C-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuS composite electrode has an excellent specific capacitance of 1186 F·g −1 at a current density of 1 A·g −1 , which is much higher than that of Ti 3 C 2 T x samples decorated with single CuS or with single CDs, illustrating that CuS and CDs have the outstanding synergistic improvement effect to MXene on the electrochemical performance. When the current density rises to 10 A·g −1 , the sample still maintains a capacitance of 907 F·g −1 , corresponding to a capacitance retention rate of 76.5%. After 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A·g −1 , the capacitance remains 67% of the initial value. These demonstrate that the C-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuS composite electrode material has a great promising practical potential in fabricating high-performance supercapacitors. The new finding about the outstanding synergistic effect of CDs and transition metal compounds on improving MXene’s electrochemical performance suggests a possible effective way for preparing the high-performance MXene-based electrode materials.

Tuning a consistent near-infrared photo-initiated multimodal tumor strategy based on the core–shell structure of gold star@PB@CuS nanoparticles

Yao Zhong,Xiaolei Li,Li Ye,Pengcheng Zhu,Lin Zhuang

Anisotropic gold nanostars are near-infrared (NIR) absorbing photosensitizers applied in photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the thermodynamic instability of the gold nanostars leading to passivation limits their anti-tumor efficacy in addressing spreading and metastatic tumors. Herein gold star@PB@CuS (GPC) nanoparticles with a core–shell structure were designed and fabricated to address the shortcomings above and achieve multimodal anti-tumor treatment. GPC exhibits a broader absorption peak (810 nm) at the near-infrared region (NIR) through the synergistic effect, achieving excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and stability along with stronger photoacoustic (PA) imaging. The high tunable plasmon resonances of gold nanostars enable them to optimize the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect through adjustments in their shape and size. This ensures that the laser wavelengths used for PTT and PDT processes of GPC are coherent at 808 nm (in the so-called “first bio-window”), without significant passivation. Simultaneously, we found that GPC further introduced chemodynamic therapy (CDT) by enabling glutathione (GSH) depletion, Fenton-like reactions, and self-supplied O2 to assist type-I PDT breaking in hypoxia and over expressed the GSH tumor microenvironment (TME). The endogenous and exogenous triggered nanotherapeutic platform PTT/PDT/CDT enables a complete ablation of 4T1 tumors within the first bio-window, showcasing enhanced photo-therapeutic efficacy and addressing critical challenges in current anti-tumor strategies.

Universal pathway towards metal sulfides decorated 3D porous Ti3C2Tx MXene aerogel for vapor-phase mercury removal

Wei Zheng,Zequn Yang,Jiefeng Chen,Mingguang Zhang,Hongxiao Zu,Ruiyang Qin,Wenqi Qu,Jianping Yang,Lijian Leng,Hailong Li

Utilization of monolithic mineral sulfide-based sorbent for the fix-bed elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) removal is regarded as a predominant predicament in the field of Hg 0 abatement. In this work, a general and facile route was exploited to establish CuS particles decorated 3D porous Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene aerogel via divalent Cu 2+ cations induced assembly combined with subsequent high-temperature sulfurization treatment, during which, uniform CuS particles were homogeneously anchored throughout the Ti 3 C 2 T x substrate. The obtained 3D CuS/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene aerogel exhibited satisfactory textural property, hierarchical pore structure and strong interaction between Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and CuS. Meanwhile, the inherent restacking of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheet and serious agglomeration of CuS can also be effectively avoided in the formation of aerogel. Those structural advantages originating from this novel gelation process favorably contributes to satisfactory Hg 0 mass transfer and sufficient utilization of CuS active ligands, which largely strengthens Hg 0 removal performance and broadens the fix-bed application of mineral sulfides. Consequently, the Hg 0 capture capacity and adsorption rate of CuS/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene aerogel reached 90596.4 g m −3 and 120.64 g m −3 min −1 , respectively, far outbalancing those of the reported in-situ selenized copper foam with excellent Hg 0 removal activity. The impressive Hg 0 sequestration performance is attributed to its relatively large specific surface area, layered pore channel, and highly dispersed CuS particles, largely boosting Hg 0 mass transfer and following sequestration. Moreover, other mineral sulfides/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene aerogels can also be constructed by just replacing divalent metal cations, which makes the initial effort towards the fix-bed utilization of mineral sulfides-based aerogel for vapor-phase Hg 0 immobilization.

The CdS/CuS heterojunction prepared by room-temperature vulcanization of Cu-BTC accelerates charge carrier transfer to achieving high-efficiency photocatalytic H2 evolution

Ning Qi,Hongchao Qi,Tianrong Xiong,Youzhou He,Qinghong Cai,Zhuoqi Liu,Panyin Wang,Yongcheng Feng,Lin Chen,Bowen Lei,Xingyan Liu

The interfacial agglomeration in photocatalysts synthesized via high-temperature methods leads to hindered charge carrier mobility, severely limiting their photocatalytic performance. Herein, we introduced a room-temperature sulfidation strategy for the fabrication of CdS/CuS heterojunctions utilizing Cu-BTC. The optimized CdS/CuS composite demonstrated an exceptional hydrogen evolution rate of 14.07 mmol·h −1 ·g −1 , which was 7.5 times greater than that of pristine CdS. The slow release of Cu 2+ from Cu-BTC at room temperature effectively inhibited interfacial agglomeration. This was further confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the formation of a CdS/CuS type-II heterojunction was confirmed by Mott-Schottky measurements, Tauc analysis, and valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS) analysis. Owing to the interfacial electronic coupling of CdS/CuS, charge carrier recombination is suppressed while carrier migration and separation are accelerated, leading to a significant enhancement in the hydrogen evolution activity. This work therefore proposes a feasible room-temperature synthesis strategy for fabricating high-quality heterojunctions, which effectively suppresses interfacial agglomeration and accelerates charge carrier transfer, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic performance.

In situ growth of CuS nanoparticles on g-C3N4 nanosheets for H2 production and the degradation of organic pollutant under visible-light irradiation

Zhenhe Xu,Baotong Xu,Kun Qian,Zheng Li,Fu Ding,Miaomiao Fan,Yaguang Sun,Yu Gao

The solar-to-fuel conversion using a photocatalyst is an ideal method to solve the energy crisis and global warming. In this contribution, photocatalytic H2 production and organic pollutant removal using g-C3N4/CuS composite was demonstrated. Well dispersed CuS nanoparticles (NPs) with a size of about 10 nm were successfully grown on the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheet via a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared g-C3N4/CuS nanocomposite at an optimized loading exhibited a much higher visible light photoactivity, giving up to 2.7 times and 1.5 times enhancements in comparison to pure g-C3N4 for photocatalytic H2 production and methylene orange (MO) degradation, respectively. These enhanced photocatalytic activities are attributed to the interfacial transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes between g-C3N4 and CuS, which leads to effective charge separation on both parts. That is, under the visible light irradiation, electrons in the valence band (VB) of g-C3N4 can directly transfer to the CuS NPs, which can act as an electron sink and co-catalyst to promote the separation and transfer of photo-generated electrons, thus significantly improving the photocatalytic efficiency.

Optimized Preparation of CuS@SiO2 Core-Shell Nanoparticles with Strong LSPR Absorption and Excellent Photostability for Highly Efficient Solar-driven Interfacial Water Evaporation

Meng Chenchen,Huang Min,Li Yunchao

Covellite copper sulfide nanocrystals(CuS NCs) are typical p-type semiconductors, showing strong optical absorption in the near-infrared(NIR) region thanks to their notable localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR) properties. However, their LSPR properties and compositions are both highly susceptible to the external environment, which severely limits their practical applications. Until now, it remains a technical challenge to improve the structural and optical stability without sacrificing the LSPR performance of CuS NCs. Herein, to solve such a challenge, CuS@SiO 2 NPs with various silica shell thicknesses(CSNs- X nm) were synthesized in a well-controlled fashion via optimizing reverse microemulsion coating protocol. Compared with the pristine CuS NCs, the as-prepared CuS@SiO 2 NPs exhibited comparable LSPR properties but much higher photostability, enabling resistance to various harsh environments( e.g. , high-power irradiation, strong reduction, and oxidation environment). Impressively, when used in solar-driven interfacial water evaporation, all the CuS@SiO 2 NPs exhibited excellent water evaporation performance with efficiencies beyond 70%(as high as 75.2% for CSN-23 nm) after 20 continuous testing cycles. Evidently, this paper is greatly helpful in better designing and fabricating high-performance plasmonic materials for practical photoelectrical, photothermal, and photocatalytic applications.

Copper sulphide/cuprous sulphide doped zero-valent iron@carbon (ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S) activate PMS for rapid and effective decomposition of Ni-EDTA

Wenyan Wang,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong

Ni-EDTA is widely present in electroplating effluents. It cannot be effectively removed by traditional wastewater treatment methods due to its chemical stability. In this study, copper sulphide/cuprous sulphide doped zero-valent iron@carbon (ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S) was prepared to active peroxymonsulphate (PMS) to decomposition Ni-EDTA. The ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S + PMS process shows excellent performance under neutral or even alkaline conditions. This is due to the acceleration of ZVI electron transport by CuS/Cu2S, the autocatalysis of CuS/Cu2S itself, and the synergistic effect of CuS/Cu2S and Ni-EDTA. The removal efficiency of 50 ppm Ni-EDTA electroplating effluents reached 99.53% at 10 min, and the discharge water can meet the Chinese emission standard. The influences of the main parameters such as initial pH value, catalyst, PMS and initial Ni-EDTA concentration on removal efficiency was systematically investigated.
