The development of TNP sensors for one-stop real-time detection is crucial for understanding water environments and maintaining human health and safety. However, one of the main obstacles that hindering the development of on-site detection technology in the future is the complexity of the detection environment. Here, in this work, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) Eu-tcbpe designed with H 4 tcbpe (H 4 tcbpe = 4′,4‴,4‴,4′‴-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrakis(([1,1′biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid))) and Eu 3+ was synthesized. This complex exhibited anti-interference, sensitive, and rapid detection capabilities with the limitation of detection of 0.42 mg/L for TNP. In order to realize real-time portable detection, a hydrogel sensing platform with Eu-tcbpe and methyl red was designed and prepared. This platform retains all the features of Eu-tcbpe . Combining it with smartphone can perform real-time detection towards TNP. It could be found that two independent colorimetric and fluorescent channels on the sensor exhibited specific responses to TNP under sunlight and fluorescence irradiation, respectively. Furthermore, by utilizing the principle of strong electrostatic interaction, the cationic dye safranin T (ST) was encapsulated into Eu-tcbpe with an anionic framework, achieving tunability of the fluorescence color of Eu-tcbpe . This work is expected to provide research ideas for advancing the detection of MOFs in fluorescence sensing and the practical application of MOFs as multi-color luminescent materials.

Polymeric drug nanocarriers still face critical challenges, including poor water solubility, limited biocompatibility, insufficient drug loading capacity, uncontrolled drug release, and the lack of in situ sensing capabilities. This work aims to develop new polymeric drug nanocarriers with multifunctionalization of drug loading, releasing, and in situ sensing (D-LRS). Firstly, water-dispersible Eu 3+ -induced polymeric nanoaggregates (EIPAs) composed of EuCl 3 , 1,10-phenanthroline, and 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone are synthesized as drug nanocarriers in a polystyrene- block -poly(acrylic acid) aqueous system. The as-synthesized EIPAs have an average diameter of 200 nm and intrinsic luminescence in an aqueous environment, as well as good biocompatibility. Secondly, both doxorubicin ( dox ) and paclitaxel ( pac ) are encapsulated with EIPAs for co-delivery, either separately or together, and the encapsulated drugs are found to be able to achieve pH-responsive controlled release. More importantly, the loading and releasing of the dox and pac drugs could be efficiently in situ monitored by tuning the emission intensity of EIPAs. Thanks to desired water solubility and biocompatibility, as well as intense aqua-luminescence and pH-responsive drug-releasing ability, the smart Eu 3+ -fluorescence-sensible drug carriers could have potential for D-LRS in the combinatory therapy of cancer.

The persistent threat posed by radioactive metal contamination necessitates the development of innovative and sustainable remediation strategies. In this study, we proposed a self-sustaining bioelectrocatalytic reduction system (BECRs) incorporating an in situ co-synthesized ternary Fe/Cu/Co@Z-CF cathode derived from zeolite imidazole salt skeleton (ZIF) -functionalized carbon felt. The engineered electrode demonstrated outstanding electrocatalytic performance, characterized by an ultrahigh exchange current density of 7.68 × 10 −3 A cm −2 and minimal charge transfer resistance of 0.11 Ω. These properties were attributed to the synergistic redox cycling of Fe-Cu-Co species and the enhanced exposure of active sites facilitated by the ZIF structure. Under optimized conditions at pH 11, the BECRs achieved removal efficiencies exceeding 98.28 % for targeted radionuclides (Cs + : 99.00 %, Sr 2+ : 98.28 %, Tb 3+ : 99.95 %, Eu 3+ : 99.97 %) while generating a stable bio-voltage of 730 mV. The removal mechanisms operated synergistically through three primary pathways: direct electroreduction of metals to elemental or metallic oxide forms at the catalytic cathode; electroflocculation mediated by in situ formation of Fe(OH) x species and microbial adsorption by enriched pollutant-resistant microbial consortia, notably with a 16.3 % increase in Bacteroidota abundance. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed charge complementarity among Fe/Cu/Co sites, accelerating oxygen reduction kinetics. Crucially, the electrode demonstrated negligible metal leaching across pH 3–11, confirming ecological safety. Kinetic analysed distinguish radionuclide-specific pathways: pseudo-first-order for Cs⁺/Sr²⁺ versus pseudo-second-order for Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ , informing selective recovery strategies. This work established a green, energy-positive paradigm for radioactive wastewater treatment, achieving simultaneous decontamination, resource recovery (metallic Cs/Sr/Tb/Eu) with significant potential for closed-loop nuclear effluent management.

Eu2+-doped whitlockite-type phosphors have attracted considerable attention owing to their structurally tunable frameworks and diverse luminescence colors. However, the intricate composition–property relationships present significant challenges for rational material design. In this study, a composition-based machine learning model was established to predict emission wavelengths. Through systematic evaluation of nine algorithms, the random forest regression (RFR) model was identified as the most effective, achieving a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.817 on the independent test set. Leveraging SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis to interpret feature contributions, we established a data-driven material design framework for Eu2+-doped whitlockite-type phosphors. Guided by this framework, a series of Ca8-xSrxMgLa(PO4)7 (x = 0-8) solid-solution phosphors were synthesized. The experimentally measured emission peaks exhibit excellent agreement with the predicted values, with all deviations falling within ±4% error margin. This work establishes a composition-only machine learning framework for predicting emission properties and accelerating the rational design of complex-structured luminescent materials.

Mesoporous molecular sieves silica materials had been functionalized employing 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as the surface decoration agent by a post-synthesis method and Eu and Ti with different loading ratio were synchronously anchored on amino-functionalized silica framework by incipient wetness impregnation method, respectively. The structures of the synthesized samples were evaluated by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectra, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and solid-state 29 Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The results revealed that the highly ordered mesoporous two dimensional hexagonal structure and the mesoporous channel structure were well preserved and isolated tetrahedral surface Eu3+ and isolated [TiO4] or [HOTiO3] species were found to be grafted and highly dispersed in the amino-functionalized mesoporous framework. A significant enhancement in selectivity and conversion for the photocatalytic epoxidation of styrene has been achieved by synergistic effect based on surface ligand effect and electron density effect between Eu 3+ and Ti 4+ species on amino-functionalized mesoporous silica framework. The factors associated with the conversion of styrene and selectivity to styrene oxide such as the solvent, metal loading, the amount of NaOH, H 2 O 2 /Styrene, the amount of catalyst and reaction time were also investigated in details. The desired selectivity (84%) to styrene oxide and excellent conversion (32%) of styrene for the photocatalytic epoxidation of styrene with turnover frequency of 3.1 × 10 −4 s −1 were obtained using aqueous H2O2 as an oxidant in the presence of acetonitrile solvent under ambient temperature.

In this work, new high-entropy RE 2 (Ce 0.2 Zr 0.2 Hf 0.2 Sn 0.2 Ti 0.2 ) 2 O 7 (RE 2 HE 2 O 7 , RE = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy) ceramics were successfully prepared. RE 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramics exhibited a pyrochlore–fluorite dual-phase structure. For Sm 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramic, Ce 4+ with larger ionic radius was enriched in the fluorite phase, Sn 4+ and Ti 4+ with smaller ionic radii were enriched in the pyrochlore phase, while Zr 4+ and Hf 4+ with medium ionic radii existed in both phases. Compared with YSZ materials, RE 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramics exhibited a much lower glass-like thermal conductivity (1.19–1.68 W m −1 K −1 , 100–900 °C) and comparable thermal expansion coefficients (8.67–10.85 × 10 −6 K −1 , 1200 °C). Furthermore, due to grain refinement caused by the competition of two phases, the Vickers hardness (10.29–13.85 GPa) of RE 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramics is improved. The results indicate that dual-phase high-entropy RE 2 HE 2 O 7 ceramics are promising candidate materials for the next generation of thermal barrier coatings.

In order to protect human health from the threat of excessive acrylamide in heat-processed foods, swift, uncomplicated, highly selective and sensitive online monitoring methods for acrylamide are urgently needed. In this study, a rare earth metal/transition metal-organic frameworks Eu/Zr-MOFs fluorescence sensor with dual-band luminescence was prepared by the solvothermal method for detection of acrylamide in fried potatoes and cookie crumbs. This sensor exhibited two different fluorescence emission peaks at 430 and 615 nm under excitation of 365 nm, and the ratio of fluorescence intensity was linear with the experimental concentration of acrylamide in the range of 1 × 10 −4 to 1 × 10 −3 M. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed fluorescence analysis method showed that the detection limit of acrylamide was as low as 2.4 × 10 −8 M, and the satisfactory recoveries of 94.05–104.04% were obtained for various spiked samples. More importantly, the sensor has ultra-high selectivity for the detection of acrylamide while other small organic molecules hardly interfere with it in the measurement environment. These studies confirmed that the ratiometric fluorescence sensing method was expected to achieve on-line rapid detection of acrylamide in real foods. In addition, the mechanism of Eu/Zr-MOFs sensing of acrylamide was analyzed and discussed in depth, and the analog computation was carried out by Materials Studio software, and the entire sensing system was studied at the micro level in combination with density functional theory.

Paper-based fluorescence devices, with smartphone aids, bring considerable operation convenience for tetracycline (TC) sensing. Nevertheless, they must meet the challenge in real determination against complicated backgrounds. Considering that, we present a programmable-printing paper-based device and then apply it to TC determination for various natural samples. MoS2 NPs and Gmp/Eu-Cit are synthetized as composite probes. A static quenching process is found with MoS2 NP fluorescence at 430 nm, while significant magnification of Gmp/Eu-Cit emission is obtained at 617 nm, establishing a valuable ratiometric indicator. Remarkably, two-stage programmable printing maximizes the proposed sensing capability. A transitive device, containing a gradually changing amount of a certain probe, is prepared to sense TC. With a homemade smartphone application and 3D-printed measurement chamber, the corresponding signals are examined to explore optimal setups. These setups are automatically processed to prepare the final-version device, not requiring manual operations. Benefitting from this interesting feature, the proposed device gains many rewards in performances. It effectively senses TC in a wide range from 12.7 nM to 80 μM and simultaneously provides naked eye-legible signals and smartphone-based readouts with confident selectivity and stability. This device is consequently applied for various samples of soil, river water, milk, and serum and meets well with HPLC–MS and recovery tests.

A selective phosphorescent on-off-on probe with long decay lifetime has been designed for the detection of pyrophosphate ions (PPi). The detection scheme is based on the use of europium(III)-modulated Mn(II)-doped ZnS quantum dots capped with N-acetyl-L-cysteine. Both the aggregation of quantum dots and electron transfer induced by Eu(III) ions cause phosphorescence to be quenched (“off” state). Phosphorescence is, however, restored on addition of PPi to the system (“on” state). The effect is attributed to the removal of Eu(III) from the carboxy groups on the surface of the quantum dots owing to the stronger interaction between PPi and Eu(III). A linear relationship exists between phosphorescence intensity (best measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 316/594 nm) and PPi concentration in the 400 nM to 6000 nM with a detection limit of 145 nM. An additional attractive feature is provided by the long-lived phosphorescence (1920 μs) of the quantum dots. It can be used to eliminate interference by short-lived fluorescence in biological samples by performing time resolved measurements. The probe was applied to the determination of PPi in spiked in urine samples and gave recoveries in the range from 98 to 105% with RSDs of <2.0%.

The hollow nanospheres (NSs) composed of lanthanides have become a hot topic owing to their uncommon magnetic and optical properties arising from the 4f electrons. However, only a few novel methods have been developed for effectively integrating small calcium phosphate (CaP) nanoparticles and rare earth oxide drug carriers into an individual hollow mesoporous nanosphere. Herein, we report a facile, reproducible, room-temperature solution method to prepare multifunctional fluorescent hollow mesoporous Gd 2 O 3 :Eu/CaP (designated as HM-Gd 2 O 3 :Eu/CaP) NSs by using polyacrylic acid calcium (PAA-Ca) as a template. The excellent luminescent property and obvious T 1 -enhancement effect as well as the HM structure endow the HM-Gd 2 O 3 :Eu/CaP NSs with the capacity of simultaneous dual-modal fluorescence, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and drug delivery. The nanocontainer-functionality of the HM-Gd 2 O 3 :Eu/CaP NSs is further validated upon filling with the anti-cancerogenic agent doxorubicin (drug-loading capacity is 749 μg mg −1 ). In addition, the HM-Gd 2 O 3 :Eu/CaP NSs display excellent pH-responsive and sustained drug release property. In vitro cell cytotoxicity tests verify the HM-Gd 2 O 3 :Eu/CaP NSs have good biocompatibility when the concentration ≤25 mg mL −1 . Taken together, the results suggested that the HM-Gd 2 O 3 :Eu/CaP NSs can be applied as fluorescence and MR dual-modal imaging contrast agents and drug delivery vehicles.

One-dimensional CaMoO 4 :RE 3+ (RE = Eu, Sm, Dy, Tb) nanofibers were successfully synthesized through a facile supersaturated recrystallization process. These CaMoO 4 :Ln 3+ nanofibers have the length ranging from 40 to 70 nm and the width of nearly 2 nm. Under UV excitation, these single-doped CaMoO 4 nanofibers shown stronger emission, and the photoluminescence quantum efficiency is 25.7% (CaMoO 4 :Eu 3+ ), 22.4% (CaMoO 4 :Sm 3+ ), 23.2% (CaMoO 4 :Dy 3+ ) and 27.7% (CaMoO 4 :Tb 3+ ), respectively. Moreover, our work reveals that various emission colors can be obtained and tuned from pure red to delight green via co-doping Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ in the CaMoO 4 host, and the energy transfer properties from Tb 3+ to Eu 3+ are also demonstrated. Finally, we apply the green CaMoO 4 :Tb 3+ , red CaMoO 4 :Eu 3+ and white CaMoO 4 :0.05Tb 3+ , 0.02Eu 3+ for LED devices, and these nanofiber-based LEDs present high efficiency and stability, which indicates the promising application in future optoelectronic fields.

The design and preparation of fluorescent sensors for detecting toxic ions in aqueous environments are of paramount importance. In this study, a europium metal–organic framework (Eu-MOF), constructed from Eu3+, the rigid 2,2′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid (2,2′-H2bpdc) ligand, and the auxiliary 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) ligand, was synthesized through hydrothermal synthesis. The synthesized Eu-MOF demonstrated remarkable water stability, pH stability, thermal stability, and photostability. It showed a high quantum yield of 42.6%, along with an average fluorescence lifetime of 0.9002 ms, which could enhance its sensitivity when employed as a fluorescent probe. The Eu-MOF could function as a fluorescent probe to quantitatively detect trace amounts of Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72− via fluorescence quenching. Their detection sensitivities are 1.527 × 104 M−1, 1.378 × 104 M−1 and 1.463 × 104 M−1 respectively, with detection limits as low as 0.28 μM, 0.19 μM and 0.09 μM. Additionally, the Eu-MOF sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, anti-interference ability, repeatability (after undergoing five cycles) and practical feasibility. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of its fluorescence properties and sensing mechanisms was carried out. Based on density functional theory calculations, two energy transfer pathways in the process of Eu3+ ion luminescence sensitized by the double ligands 2,2′-H2bpdc and Phen were identified. The fluorescence sensing mechanism of the Eu-MOF for detecting Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72− involved photoinduced electron transfer from the antenna ligand to the organic molecules and competitive absorption of excitation energy. Owing to its high stability and sensitivity, the Eu-MOF holds great potential for practical applications as a sensor for Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72− in aqueous environments.
