Peach fruit quality—including sweetness, firmness, and nutritional value—is strongly determined by mineral nutrition, yet limited soil availability of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) under production activities often constrains high-quality fruit formation in juicy peach production. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of foliar application of Ca and Mg on leaf nutrient status and fruit quality in peach ( Prunus persica L. Batsch). Seven treatments were established, including 0.1% (T1), 0.2% (T2), and 0.3% (T3) CaCl 2 solutions, 0.1% (T4), 0.2% (T5), and 0.3% (T6) MgSO 4 solutions, and a water-sprayed control (CK). All treatments were applied during the fruit development stage, and RNA sequencing analysis was performed on the highest-concentration MgSO 4 treatment group. The results of this study showed that high-concentration treatments (0.3% CaCl 2 , T3; 0.3% MgSO 4 , T6) significantly increased leaf chlorophyll and Ca/Mg accumulation relative to CK. For Ca treatments, T3 significantly increased sucrose content, whereas T2 enhanced glucose accumulation and total phenolic content, indicating that appropriate CaCl 2 supplementation may improve fruit quality through regulation of carbohydrate metabolism and antioxidant responses. T6 produced the greatest gains in soluble sugars, soluble solids, vitamin C, and antioxidant capacity, indicating a close link between leaf Mg status and carbohydrate accumulation. Transcriptomic analysis of peach leaves further revealed that Mg supplementation modulated genes involved in starch and sucrose metabolism, contributing to sugar accumulation. This study revealed that foliar application of 0.3% MgSO 4 offers an effective strategy for improving peach fruit quality.

Citrus essential oil valorizes agro by-products. This biodegradable non-toxic food packaging replaces petroleum plastics. • β-Cyclodextrin metal framework reduces oil loss, overcoming cyclodextrin pore limits and metal framework toxicity. • Polylactic acid and chitosan blend improves film physical performance and antimicrobial properties. To break through the bottlenecks of existing active packaging in terms of antibacterial activity and sustained-release performance, this study fabricated polylactic acid/chitosan nanofibrous films loaded with citrus essential oil encapsulated in β-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (CEO/β-CD-MOF/PLA/CS) via electrospinning. The properties of the resulting films were systematically investigated. The results indicated that after the introduction of CEO/β-CD-MOF into the nanofibrous films, the thermal stability and hydrophobicity of the film were improved. The film enabled sustained release of CEO for up to 240 h, and the inhibitory effects of the film against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea were dose-dependent. Furthermore, the composite film effectively delayed the spoilage of blackberries. Thus, the CEO/β-CD-MOF/PLA/CS nanofibrous film developed in this study demonstrated significant potential for fruit preservation. Co-fermentation of Yinhong plum with seven rose cultivars was systematically studied. • Edible roses reshaped the fermentation microenvironment and enhanced ethanol yield. • Double Roses significantly enriched total volatile esters and phenylethyl alcohol. • Crimson Glory rose enhanced both mineral concentration and antioxidant activity. • PCA models identified Double Roses and Crimson Glory as optimal for compound wine. To investigate the effects of different rose varieties on the quality and functional characteristics of Yinhong plum compound fruit wine, seven varieties, namely Hetian (Ht.), Crimson Glory (Cg.), Double Roses (Dr.), Bitter Water (Bt.), Damascena (Dms.), Pingyin (Py.), and Chiba Roses (Cb.), were co-fermented, with a single plum wine as the blank control (Bl.). Physicochemical analysis, headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS)-based flavoromics, and principal component analysis (PCA) were employed. Results showed that roses reshaped the fermentation microenvironment. Ht. and Cg. promoted sugar metabolism, increasing alcohol to 15.3% and 15.1% (v/v). Aroma analysis revealed enriched esters (ethyl caprylate, ethyl decanoate) and phenylethyl alcohol. Total esters in Dr. reached 1884.58 μg/kg, imparting complexity. Cg. elevated total minerals (1168.37 mg/L) and K, Mg. Despite increased total phenolic content (TPC) in Cg. (910.14 μg/mL) and Dr. (897.97 μg/mL), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging did not increase proportionally. This decoupling suggests antioxidant capacity depends on phenolic profiles and bioavailability, not just quantity. PCA-based evaluation (explaining 96.478% of the total variance) ranked the varieties as follows: Dr. > Cg. > Bl. > Bt. > Dms. > Py. > Ht. > Cb. In conclusion, Dr. and Cg. performed best, providing a basis for brewing premium rose-characterized fruit wines.

Postharvest wax coating reduces water loss and enhances visual appeal but impairs gas exchange in citrus fruit, inducing anaerobic fermentation and off-flavor development. This study demonstrates that exogenous γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) mitigates these physiological disorders. GABA enhanced peel gas permeance by 1.7- to 2.2-fold through suppression of C25-C31 cuticular alkane biosynthesis and enlargement of stomatal apertures, thereby alleviating internal hypoxia. This metabolic shift from anaerobic fermentation toward aerobic respiration was mediated by GABA shunt reprogramming and amino acid metabolic remodeling, which reduced ethanol accumulation by 57% while preserving key flavor compounds. Transcriptomic analysis revealed coordinated regulation of genes associated with wax synthesis, fermentation, and hypoxia responses. This simple amino acid treatment preserves citrus fruit flavor and nutritional quality under waxing-induced hypoxia by mitigating physiological disorders.

The inherent diversity in chemical composition and microstructure of fruit wax and cuticle layers serves as a core barrier to the universal adhesion of conventional coatings on a range of fruit surfaces ( e . g ., blueberry and grape). Herein, calcium ions were introduced into chitosan-gallic acid (CS-GA) to develop a metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) modified CS coating, which was named CS-GA-Ca. According to microstructural characterization, calcium ions, as a crosslinker, form a coordination with catechol in copolymers and further reconstruct a H-bonding network, resulting in smaller molecular chain spacing and a tighter polysaccharide network structure. Furthermore, the CS-GA-Ca films demonstrated improved vapor barrier and mechanical properties. The CS-GA-Ca coating exhibited improved adhesive capacity on the wax layer of blueberries. The molecular dynamic (MD) stimulation results revealed stronger Van der Waals forces (-64.35 kcal·mol −1 ) and electrostatic interactions binding energies (-28.84 kcal·mol −1 ) between CS-GA-Ca and epicuticular wax components compared to CS-GA (-4.21/0.01 kcal·mol −1 ). Finally, the CS-GA-Ca reduced weigh loss of blueberries and grapes by 17% and 27% compared to uncoated ones over 24 days (4℃) and 10 days (25℃), respectively. Moreover, the blueberries and grapes coated with CS-GA-Ca exhibited 2.0-fold and 1.6-fold prolonged shelf life compared to uncoated ones, respectively. Overall, this study presents a promising approach for developing bio-derived coating materials to prolong the shelf life of fruits.

The proliferation of single-use petroleum-based foams in protective packaging has become a major source of persistent plastic waste, posing significant challenges to environmental sustainability. To address this issue, we developed a fully biodegradable cushioning foam from bamboo, a rapidly renewable biomass, using an environmentally benign deep eutectic solvent (DES) process that avoids harsh chemical bleaching. The resulting lignin-containing cellulose nanofibril (LCNF)/sodium alginate (SA) foam exhibits low density (0.23 g/cm3), high compressive strength (0.24 MPa at 70% strain), and excellent elasticity (90% recovery at 50% strain), enabled by a dual-network structure of Ca2+-crosslinked SA and entangled LCNFs. Critically, the material is fully compostable and leaves no microplastic residues, offering a circular end-of-life pathway. In real-world banana drop tests, it matched the performance of commercial expanded polyethylene (EPE) while outperforming polyethylene bubble wrap. This work demonstrates a practical, scalable route to replace fossil-derived cushioning materials with a bio-based alternative that aligns with the principles of cleaner production and circular economy.

Associative learning is central to studies of cognitive behavior in invertebrates, including insects. It involves acquiring new values from rewards and punishments by continuously updating sensory cues. Different biogenic amines guide the processes of reward and punishment. The role of dopamine (DA) signaling in associative learning has long been a focal point in the study of insect cognition. Previous studies across multiple insect species have established a general framework in which DA is primarily associated with aversive learning and punishment processing. However, emerging evidence suggests that DA has also been implicated in appetitive memory in certain species, indicating potential variability in the neuromodulatory mechanisms underlying associative learning. Here, we conducted behavioral assays, pharmacological interventions, and molecular manipulations to investigate the role of DA signaling in both aversive and appetitive classical conditioning in Bactrocera dorsalis , an economically important agricultural pest with well-documented learning and memory capabilities. We found that pharmacological blockade of DA signaling impaired aversive but not appetitive learning and memory, consistent with its conserved role in punishment processing. RNAi knockdown of DA receptors impaired both aversive learning and memory, reinforcing the pharmacological findings. Surprisingly, BdDOP2 knockdown impaired appetitive memory, uncovering a unique role for DA receptor subtype in appetitive memory. These findings provide new insights into the conserved and divergent functions of DA in insect cognition. Our results highlight B. dorsalis as a promising model for studying the neural mechanisms underlying associative learning, with potential applications in developing targeted pest control strategies by disrupting specific aminergic pathways involved in olfactory-based decision-making.

To achieve formulation simplification and green fabrication, this study proposes an integrated “extraction–film formation” strategy based on Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES). Choline chloride and urea were used as the NADES system combined with ultrasound to extract flavonoids from Dalbergia pinnata (Lour.) Prain (DPF), which are directly incorporated into a Gelatin/Chitosan (Gel/CS) matrix to prepare deep eutectic composite films (GCD1–4) by solution casting. This extract simultaneously serves as a homologous plasticizer and functional agent. It avoids the repeated addition of plasticizers, antibacterial, and antioxidant agents, which are commonly required in conventional film preparation. The results show that with increasing DPF content, the films transformed from “rigid and brittle” to “flexible”, the surface wettability shifted from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, water solubility significantly decreased, and UV shielding ability was enhanced. The GCD-2 film show antibacterial efficiencies of 73.37 ± 4.94 % and 96.78 ± 0.2 % against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , respectively. Its DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging rates were 69.74 ± 0.67 % and 99.08 ± 0.9 %, respectively, demonstrated good antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Cell viability was close to 100 %, and the hemolysis rate was below 5 %, indicates good biocompatibility of the films. Furthermore, the GCD series of films demonstrated good biodegradability, indicates their strong environmental friendliness. In application tests, the GCD-2 film significantly reduced weight loss, browning, and decay in strawberries and apple slices, effectively inhibiting decay, and shows the best preservation effect. In conclusion, the Gel/CS/DPF composite films achieved synergistic “plasticization-antibacterial-antioxidation” effects through the green extract, demonstrating great potential as biodegradable active packaging materials for fruit preservation.

We present an enzyme-free glucose sensor for on-site fruit testing based on a Ni-doped triblock hydrogel that couples ionic-channel conduction with hydrogen-bond–reinforced mechanics. In the hydrogel, the NiCl 2 -hydrogel (Ni-HG) pair generates continuous ion pathways that enhance charge transport, while phytic acid establishes multi-point hydrogen bonding and moisture retention, yielding a robust, highly adhesive network that conforms to diverse electrode formats. Within this hydrated, ion-permeable scaffold, Ni 2 + /Ni 3+ (Ni(OH) 2 /NiOOH) functions as a built-in redox mediator, enabling selective, enzyme-free oxidation of glucose in alkaline media. Under optimized conditions, the Ni-HG/GCE sensor delivers a broad linear range of 0.05–6.6 mM, limit detection of 10 μM, with high selectivity against common electroactive species, good repeatability, and reliable performance in real fruit samples. The hydrogel architecture supports rapid amperometric response and stable operation, while its strong adhesion and mechanical compliance facilitate integration with screen-printed electrodes for low-cost, disposable use. These attributes establish a practical platform for fast, sensitive, and selective glucose quantification in fresh produce and point-of-use food monitoring.

Rosa roxburghii Tratt., a vitamin C-rich edible and medicinal fruit native to southwest China, plays a vital role in poverty alleviation and economic development in mountainous regions. In this study, Neofusicoccum parvum was identified for the first time as a pathogen causing fruit rot in R. roxburghii . Koch's postulates were fulfilled by re-isolating the fungus from artificially inoculated fruits, confirming its pathogenicity. Morphological and molecular analyses further validated the pathogen's identity. The optimal growth conditions for N. parvum were determined to be 28–30 °C and pH 5, with D-fructose and NH 4 Cl as the preferred carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Continuous light exposure was found to maximize mycelial growth. Among six tested plant extracts, osthol, Scutellariae Radix extract, and matrine exhibited notable antifungal activity, with osthol showing the highest efficacy (EC 50 = 30.57 μg/mL). Field trials demonstrated that 1% osthol emulsion in water (EW), applied at 300–500-fold dilution, achieved 60.68%–77.57% control efficacy against fruit rot after 21 d of the second application. This performance was comparable to the chemical fungicide 10% difenoconazole water dispersible granule (WG) (67.58%–81.04% efficacy at 5000–7000-fold dilution). This study provides a scientific basis for the biocontrol of N. parvum -induced fruit rot disease in R. roxburghii .

The yeast Debaryomyces nepalensis was evaluated for effectiveness against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in mangoes ( Mangifera indica L.) cv. ‘Tainong No. 1’, and possible mechanisms of action involved in the inhibition were identified. The results showed that D. nepalensis could survive in mango wounds and produce a hydrolytic enzyme (β-1,3-glucanase). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the yeast produced biofilms on the mango surface and yeast cells attached to each other and became embedded in the pathogen hyphal walls. In addition, D. nepalensis competed for nutrients (FeCl 3 ) and competed for space with the pathogen (p < 0.05). Morever, D. nepalensis enhanced defense-related enzymes of wounded mangoes, including peroxidase, β-1,3-glucanase, chitinase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase. In addition, gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis of volatile compounds (VOCs) produced by the yeast showed that VOCs can play important roles over short distances in the suppression of C. gloeosporioides. The solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with GC–MS technique analysis revealed phenylethyl alcohol (29.62% relative peak area, RA) as the dominant VOC mainly produced by D. nepalensis , and it had a significant inhibitory effect on fungal mycelia. According to the results obtained here, the combination of different mechanisms of action of the yeast increases their ability to control C. gloeosporioides. The use of antagonistic yeast to control C. gloeosporioides may contribute to the integrated management of disease caused by this pathogen.

Phytohormones are vital for tomato ripening, and abscisic acid (ABA) is speculated to induce ethylene biosynthesis at the initiate of tomato fruit ripening; however, its interaction sites remain unclear. In the present study, Constans-like 4 (SlCOL4), a CO/COL transcription factor, was cloned from tomato fruit. Amino acid sequence and subcellular location analysis proved that SlCOL4 was a typical transcription factor of the COL family. Gene expression analysis showed SlCOL4 expressed in different tissues of tomato plants and its transcription abundance declined at the onset of fruit ripening, coincidentally it was found to be down-regulated in ABA-treated tomato fruit and responded to exogenous ABA within 6 h after treatment. Meanwhile, yeast one-hybrid and dual-luciferase analysis showed that the ABA response factor SlAREB1 inhibited the transcription of SlCOL4 , indicating it was directly regulated by ABA at the mature green stage of tomato fruit . In addition, the pericarp color turned red faster than that of control fruit, and the key ethylene biosynthesis genes, ACS2, ACS4, and ACO1 , were up-regulated in SlCOL4 silenced tomato fruit, suggesting that SlCOL4 may be a negative regulator of ripening. Furthermore, several genes associated with the ethylene signaling pathway were identified downstream of SlCOL4 by chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Seq) analysis. Overall, the transcription factor SlCOL4 may interact with ABA and ethylene signals and negatively regulate tomato fruit ripening. The results in this study provide new insights for elucidating the molecular mechanism of ABA-ethylene interaction in regulating tomato fruit ripening, and provide references for further research on the role of COLs transcription factors in tomato fruit ripening as well.
