Well dispersed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle suspensions with grain size of about 9 nm were coprecipitated and then compounded with different amount of GO (graphite oxide) followed by reduction of GO to obtain Fe 3 O 4 /rGO (reduced graphite oxide) composites with different component ratios. The as-obtained Fe 3 O 4 /rGO composites were used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries to investigate the best component ratio of the composite for the cycling performance. Fe 3 O 4 /rGO composite electrode containing 44.9 wt% Fe 3 O 4 displayed the best cycling capacity of above 300 mA h g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 after 100 cycles and it was interesting to find that the trend of impedance spectra of Fe 3 O 4 /rGO electrodes after some cycles of electrochemical reactions can be well related to the overall cycling performances.

We present a straightforward method for creating reusable magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /Ag catalysts. Three distinct Fe 3 O 4 varieties were synthesized using different methods, and Ag nanoparticles were deposited onto the Fe 3 O 4 matrix via a hydrothermal process. The resulting Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 3 O 4 /Ag materials were characterized by XRD, XPS, FT-IR, Raman, DLS, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, VSM, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. XRD analysis of the Fe 3 O 4 particles synthesized using the solvothermal reduction process (S2) revealed firm diffraction peaks, indicating high crystallinity. After hydrothermal treatment, S2/Ag retained a hollow spherical morphology and magnetic properties similar to Fe 3 O 4 . The synthesized Fe 3 O 4 /Ag catalytic performance was evaluated for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methyl orange (MO) dye in the presence of NaBH 4 . All catalysts effectively reduced both dyes and could be magnetically separated from the aqueous solution. The P1/Ag catalyst achieved over 95 % reduction of MO and 4-NP within 2 minutes. S2/Ag exhibited superior stability, preventing Ag leaching during the reaction. Furthermore, its high saturation magnetization allows easy magnetic extraction from the solution. These findings strongly suggest S2/Ag as a promising catalyst due to its selectivity and advantageous properties.

Two precursors, namely, p -CFO- T (tetragonal) and p -CFO- C (cubic), were fabricated by a sol-gel method via citric acid and poly(vinyl alcohol) complexation, respectively. After H 2 -reduction, the two were converted to Cu/Fe 3 O 4 catalysts of different complexions, which are named as CFO-CA and CFO-PVA, respectively. The distribution of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ in the Cu/Fe 3 O 4 catalysts was studied by Raman and XPS techniques. It was disclosed that the distribution of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ in Fe 3 O 4 has an effect on Cu–Fe 3 O 4 interaction and catalyst surface basicity . Compared to CFO-PVA, CFO-CA has a larger amount of Fe 3+ , which mostly sits at the octahedral sites, leading to stronger Cu–Fe 3 O 4 interaction, and a larger amount of catalyst surface sites that are of weak basicity. As a result, the critical elementary steps of WGS reaction , viz. water dissociation, –COOH decomposition and CO 2 desorption are promoted as reflected in the lower E a and higher catalytic activity of CFO-CA.

This study aims to advance the development of magnetic fluorescent polymer microspheres for biomedical detection applications. Conventionally, dopants have utilized europium(III) (Eu(III)) organic complexes due to their high compatibility with polymers and strong fluorescence. However, as the common magnetic material Fe 3 O 4 can quench their fluorescence, it is hard to synthesize Eu complex-doped magnetic fluorescent materials. To maintain fluorescence in the presence of magnetic parts, in this work, we synthesized Eu-doped magnetic microspheres with multi-layered structure. Firstly, poly-(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microspheres were prepared as templates and subsequently coated with layers of Fe 3 O 4 and SiO 2 . Then, the synthesized Eu(TTA) 3 (TPPO) 2 were added into PGMA@Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 microspheres in either basic or acidic conditions, and covered them with an extra sol–gel layer of silica at the same time. The microspheres exhibit a core–shell structure with sub-micron dimensions (580 nm) and possess favorable superparamagnetic properties ( M s = 22.02 A·m 2 /kg, M r = 1.37 A·m 2 /kg, H c = 0.242 A/m). But the fluorescence of Eu 3+ are significantly quenched by Fe 3 O 4 , O–H oscillators, and N–H oscillators. Finally, to exclude the quenching mentioned above, the first pure SiO 2 shielding layer and the second Eu(TTA) 3 (TPPO) 2 -dispersed SiO 2 layer were coated onto PGMA@Fe 3 O 4 microspheres to prevent the energy transfer due to the quenching centers and hold the fluorescence of Eu 3+ . These findings underscore the considerable potential of these microspheres exhibiting rapid magnetic separation and stable fluorescence for bioimaging and biosensing applications.

Magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles have attached attention in bone tissue engineering because of their superior magnetism and great biocompatibility. However, some disadvantages such as the potential risk of agglomeration impair their applications. Here, we proposed a hybrid magnetic nanocomposite microgel by the integration of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and digital lighting processing (DLP) three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. The 3D-printed microgels could be precisely customized by printing the mixture of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) solution and polydopamine-coated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, in which polydopamine decoration improved the hydrophilicity and distribution of the incorporated Fe 3 O 4 . The degradable microgels could be injected through a 22-G needle while retaining their original shape after injection. Interestingly, the addition of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles into GelMA solution displayed improved printing accuracy. Moreover, these magnetic microgels were biocompatible in vitro and in vivo. After induction within osteogenic medium, addition of nanoparticles upregulated the osteogenic gene expression of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). In a word, this work provides a magnetic microplatform, which shows great potential in bone tissue engineering.

Superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles prepared by a classical coprecipitation method were used as the stabilizer to prepare magnetic Pickering emulsions, and the effects of particle concentration, oil/water volume ratio, and oil polarity on the type, stability, composition, and morphology of these functional emulsions were investigated. The three-phase contact angle (θow) of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles at the oil−water interface was evaluated using the Washburn method, and the results showed that for nonpolar and weakly polar oils of dodecane and silicone, θow is close to 90°, whereas for strongly polar oils of butyl butyrate and 1-decanol, θow is far below 90°. Inherently hydrophilic Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be used to prepare stable dodecane−water and silicone−water emulsions, but they cannot stabilize butyl butyrate−water and decanol−water mixtures with macroscopic phase separation occurring, which is in good agreement with the contact angle data. Emulsions are of the oil-in-water type for both dodecane and silicone oil, and the average droplet size increases with an increase in the oil volume fraction. For stable emulsions, not all of the particles are adsorbed to drop interfaces; the fraction adsorbed decreases with an increase in the initial oil volume fraction. Changes in the particle concentration have no obvious influence on the stability of these emulsions, even though the droplet size decreases with concentration.

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a key process for propylene production, but conventional catalysts are often constrained by high cost, environmental impact, and limited stability under harsh reaction conditions. Fe-based catalysts offer a cost-effective and sustainable alternative due to their intrinsic ability to activate C–H bonds in alkanes. However, precise control over the oxidation state and coordination environment of Fe species to balance PDH activity and stability remains challenging. Herein, we develop a molten-salt-assisted synthesis strategy integrated with CeO2–x-mediated interfacial engineering to finely tune the structural and electronic properties of Fe species supported on Al2O3. The molten salt medium enables uniform dispersion and controlled crystallization of Fe3O4, effectively mitigating its over-reduction during high-temperature H2 treatment. The subsequent incorporation of CeO2–x modulates the local electronic structure of Fe3O4, inducing a controlled partial reduction to metallic Fe0 and forming a well-defined Fe0–Fe3O4 dual-interface architecture. This interfacial electronic reconstruction enriches the electron density of low-valent Fe sites, facilitating efficient charge transfer during propane activation and promoting rapid propylene desorption. As a result, the optimized catalyst demonstrates accelerated PDH kinetics, high propylene selectivity, and enhanced resistance to coking. This work establishes a scalable route for constructing dual-interface active sites, providing a general design principle for low-cost, high-performance PDH catalysts.

In this study, Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 was synthesized and used to remove U(VI) from groundwater. Different experimental conditions and cycling experiments were used to investigate the performance of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 in the U(VI) removal, and the XRD, TEM, XPS and XANES techniques were employed to characterize the Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 . The results showed that the U(VI) removal efficiency of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 was 48.5 mg/g that was higher than the sum of removal efficiency of Fe 0 and Fe 3 O 4 . The uranium on the surface of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 mainly existed as U(IV), followed by U(VI) and U(V). The Fe 0 content decreased after reaction, while the Fe 3 O 4 content increased. Based on the results of experiments and characterization, the enhanced removal efficiency of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 was attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe 0 and Fe 3 O 4 in which Fe 3 O 4 accelerated the Fe 0 corrosion that promoted the progressively formation of Fe(II) that promoted the reduction of adsorbed U(VI) to U(IV) and incorporated U(VI) to U(V). The performance of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 at near-neutrality condition was better than at acidic and alkalic conditions. The chloride ions, sulfate ions and nitrate ions showed minor effect on the Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 performance, while carbonate ions exhibited significant inhibition. The metal cations showed different effect on the Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 performance. The removal efficiency of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 decreased with the number of cycling experiment. Ionizing radiation could regenerate the used Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 . This study provides insight into the U(VI) removal by Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 in aqueous solution.

A novel core–shell Fe3O4@FeS composed of Fe3O4 core and FeS shell with the morphology of regular octahedra has been prepared via a facile and scalable strategy via employing commercial Fe3O4 as the precursor. When used as anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the prepared Fe3O4@FeS combines the merits of FeS and Fe3O4 with high Na-storage capacity and superior cycling stability, respectively. The optimized Fe3O4@FeS electrode shows ultralong cycle life and outstanding rate capability. For instance, it remains a capacity retention of 90.8% with a reversible capacity of 169 mAh g–1 after 750 cycles at 0.2 A g–1 and 151 mAh g–1 at a high current density of 2 A g–1, which is about 7.5 times in comparison to the Na-storage capacity of commercial Fe3O4. More importantly, the prepared Fe3O4@FeS also exhibits excellent full-cell performance. The assembled Fe3O4@FeS//Na3V2(PO4)2O2F sodium-ion full battery gives a reversible capacity of 157 mAh g–1 after 50 cycles at 0.5 A g–1 with a capacity retention of 92.3% and the Coulombic efficiency of around 100%, demonstrating its applicability for sodium-ion full batteries as a promising anode. Furthermore, it is also disclosed that such superior electrochemical properties can be attributed to the pseudocapacitive behavior of FeS shell as demonstrated by the kinetics studies as well as the core–shell structure. In view of the large-scale availability of commercial precursor and ease of preparation, this study provide a scalable strategy to develop advanced anode materials for SIBs.

Magnetorheological fluid (MRF) is an intelligent material, which can be controlled by an external magnetic field. It is widely used in damping, finishing, mechanical transmission, sealing, and other engineering fields due to its magnetorheological (MR) effect. However, despite decades of research and experimental development, the wide application of MRF is still restricted by its serious settlement problem owing to the density difference between the magnetic particles and carrier liquid. Here, using the coprecipitation method, a kind of Fe3O4-modified nanolignocellulose (Fe3O4/NLC) composite fiber was characterized by its unique advantages such as low density, soft magnetism property, and high specific surface. These Fe3O4/NLCs were used as a kind of reinforcing particle with carbonyl iron powder in the new bidisperse MRF system. The performances of MRF samples were enhanced by these superior properties. We found that all MRF samples with composite fibers exhibited excellent antisettlement and dynamic mechanical characteristics and cooperativity between Fe3O4 and NLCs. Furthermore, redispersibility of MRF is qualitatively evaluated by a shearing test in this paper, explaining the high property of antihardening. This composite fiber improves the comprehensive performance of MRF and has the potential to be repeatedly used in engineering applications.

Although Fe 3 O 4 particles have exhibited excellent microwave absorbing capacity and widely used in practical application due to the synergistic effect of magnetic loss and dielectric loss, their applications are still limited for the required high mass fraction in absorbers. To overcome this problem, the development of Fe 3 O 4 materials with low dimensional structures is necessary. In this study, the shape anisotropic Fe 3 O 4 nanotubes (NTs) with low mass ratios were applied to realize efficient microwave absorption. The NTs with different aspect ratios were prepared through facile electrospinning followed by two-step thermal treatments and mechanical shearing. The cross-linked nanotubular structure enabled the absorbers to have much higher electrical conductivity, multiple scattering, polarization relaxation and better anti-reflection surface, while the shape anisotropic NTs maintained significant multiple resonances with stronger coercivity. These all were beneficial to microwave absorption with enhanced dielectric loss, magnetic loss and sterling impedance matching. Results showed that the absorber with 33.3 wt.% of short Fe 3 O 4 NTs had minimum reflection loss of -58.36 dB at 17.32 GHz with a thickness of 1.27 mm, and had the maximum effective absorbing bandwidth (EAB) of 5.27 GHz when the thickness was 1.53 mm. The absorber with 14.3 wt.% of long Fe 3 O 4 NTs presented the widest EAB in certain radar band with attenuated 80.75% X band and 85% Ku band energy bellow -10 dB at the thickness of 2.65 and 1.53 mm, respectively. This study provided an approach for the development of shape anisotropic magnetic absorbing materials, and broadened their practical applications as magnetic absorbers.

Iron-based materials are widely applied in Fenton chemistry, and they have promising prospects in the processing of wastewater. The composition complexity and rich chemistry of iron and/or oxides, however, hamper the precise understanding of the active sites and the working mechanism, which still remain highly controversial. Herein, iron oxides of four different model systems are designed through a conventional precipitation method plus H2reduction treatment. These systems feature Fe@Fe3O4with abundant oxygen vacancy, Fe0and Fe3O4particles with interface structures, and Fe3O4-dominated nanoparticles of different sizes. These materials are applied in the decomposition of methyl orange as a model reaction to assess the Fenton chemistry. The Fe@Fe3O4with core–shell structures exhibits significantly higher decomposition activity than the other Fe3O4-rich nanoparticles. A thin Fe3O4layer formed by auto-oxidation of iron particles when exposed to air can boost the activity as compared with the Fe0and Fe3O4particles with interface structures but poor oxygen vacancy. The unique hetero-structure with the co-existence of both metallic iron and oxygen vacancy displays excellent redox propensity, which might account for the superior Fenton activity. This finding provides a new perspective to understand and design highly efficient iron-based Fenton catalysts.
