Graphical Photo finish : A catalyst made of MoS 2 nanosheets loaded on Cu-doped CdS nanorods is synthesized through a facile two-step solvothermal approach. The working electrode is formed by loading a certain amount of catalyst on fluorine tin oxide. A significant increase in the photoelectrochemical performance is observed, owing to the synergistic effect between CdS and MoS 2 and fast interfacial charge transfer from the Cu 2+ doping. Transition-metal ion doping and efficient decoration by using a co-catalyst have been proven to effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and broaden the visible-light response region. Here, we have constructed MoS 2 nanosheets decorated on a copper-doped CdS nanorod composite as a noble-metal-free photoelectrocatalyst. This kind of composite material was constructed through a simple solvothermal method. The morphology, structure, chemical states, photoelectrochemical properties, and other properties were tested by using a diverse range of analytical techniques. Owing to the Cu 2+ doping and the excellent electron-capturing ability of MoS 2 , 5 % MoS 2 /Cu−CdS (with 7 % Cu 2+ doping in CdS) exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution reaction with a rate of 10.18 mmol h −1 g −1 , which is about 48 times higher than that of pure CdS. A significant increase in the photoelectrochemical performance of the composite catalytic material benefits from the synergistic effect between CdS and MoS 2 and fast interfacial charge transfer, owing to the Cu 2+ doping. These findings provide a new thought for further research of the ion doping in photoelectrocatalytic field.

Cadmium sulfide , with its narrow band gap, can be used as a photocatalyst in the visible light region for the splitting of water, but its limited number of active sites and tendency to agglomerate are problematic for producing high yields of hydrogen. Therefore, an inverse emulsion polymerization method was used to fabricate polyacrylamide (PAM) microgels as a substrate to immobilize CdS nanoparticles (PAM-CdS). The PAM microgels not only immobilized the CdS nanoparticles, but also prevented aggregation. N Cd bonds in the PAM-CdS microgels facilitated electron transfer from the PAM to the CdS resulting in more electrons participating in the H 2 production process. The electrostatic interactions between the PAM and CdS also hindered the recombination of electron-hole pairs. These PAM-CdS microgels exhibit admirable photocatalytic H 2 production performance with a H 2 production rate of up to 5.21 mmol h −1 g −1 .

We report on high-quality microcrystalline diamond films deposited on Si substrates in microwave hydrogen plasma (without methane feed gas) using graphite powders with different sizes from 2 μm to 150 μm as the carbon source. Hydrocarbon radicals, necessary for diamond growth, are produced in course of the graphite etching by atomic hydrogen, and supplied into the plasma for further participation in diamond formation on the substrate. Owing to the large open surface area of the powder the approach allows a continuous long-term stable flux of hydrocarbons (as determined via in situ optical emission spectroscopy of the plasma) during the 10 h graphite etching process. The produced diamond films with grain size of ~1 μm were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy , and exhibited similar morphology and crystallinity independent on the graphite powder dimensions.

Fullerene (C60) enhanced mesoporous CdS/TiO2 architectures were fabricated by an evaporation induced self-assembly route together with an ion-exchanged method. C60 clusters were incorporated into the pore wall of mesoporous CdS/TiO2 with the formation of C60 enhanced CdS/TiO2 hybrid architectures, for achieving the enhanced photostability and photocatalytic activity in H2 evolution under visible-light irradiation. Such greatly enhanced photocatalytic performance and photostability could be due to the strong combination and heterojunctions between C60 and CdS/TiO2. The as-formed C60 cluster protection layers in the CdS/TiO2 framework not only improve the light absorption capability, but also greatly accelerated the photogenerated electron transfer to C60 clusters for H2 evolution.

A cobalt-based polyoxometalate, Na 7 H 10 [Co 6 (H 2 O) 2 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 (PW 6 O 26 )]·30H 2 O, was synthesized by a simple aqueous solution method. It showed catalytic activity for the visible-light-driven H 2 evolution from water splitting with eosin Y as the photosensitizer and triethanolamine as the electron donor. The initial rate of the H 2 evolution was 141 μmol h − 1 , which was higher than that of Co 2 + cations (55 μmol h − 1 ). The efficient catalytic activity was attributed to that the [B-PW 9 O 34 ] 9 − units in the sample act as electron transmitters to accelerate charge transfer. Moreover, a possible mechanism was proposed to explain the H 2 evolution from water splitting in the present system.

To optimize the CO 2 permeation and CO 2 /H 2 separation performance of hollow fiber-supported polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes, the effect of the viscosity of the PDMS coating solution on surface morphologies, thickness of PDMS layer, and solution intrusion into surface pores of hollow fiber supports was investigated. Increases in both stirring time and standing time could increase the viscosity of the PDMS solution. The PDMS layer thickness increased when the coating solution viscosity increased, whereas the surface roughness of the PDMS layer markedly decreased and then slightly changed. Moreover, when the stirring time of the PDMS coating solution was 9 min and the standing time was increased from 2 min to 25 min, the CO 2 permeance first decreased, then increased to ∼2250 GPU probably due to the decreased intrusion depth, and finally decreased because of the substantially increased thickness of the PDMS layer. However, the CO 2 /H 2 selectivity increased to 3.4 with an increase in coating solution viscosity. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135 , 45765.

Piezocatalytic hydrogen evolution represents a promising strategy for generating sustainable energy. The construction of heterojunctions can realize the efficient separation and migration of charges and thus achieve enhanced H2 evolution performance. In this study, we report the fabrication of a CdS-Cd2Nb2O7 (CdS-CNO) heterojunction piezocatalyst with cadmium vacancies aimed at improving hydrogen evolution performance. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) was combined with cadmium niobate (Cd2Nb2O7, CNO) to form a heterojunction through a photodeposition strategy. By regulating the photodeposition time, CdS-CNO nanocomposites with varying CdS contents were successfully obtained. Cadmium vacancies were introduced into the CNO matrix during the photodeposition process, where cadmium ions within the CNO lattice reacted with sulfur ions to form CdS, resulting in the creation of cadmium vacancies. Experimental results demonstrated that the CdS-CNO-4 composite, with an optimized CdS content, exhibited the highest piezoelectric hydrogen production activity of 6.01 mmol·g–1·h–1, which is much higher than those of most previously reported piezocatalysts. The enhanced performance is attributed to the strong internal electric field generated by piezoelectric polarization and efficient charge carrier separation facilitated by the heterojunction and cadmium vacancies. This study aims to provide a strategy for developing highly efficient heterojunction piezocatalysts.

To optimize the performance of photocatalytic H 2 production, many effective methods have been developed, such as controlling morphology, designing synergetic reaction, and enhancing the utilization of photogenerated charge carriers (PCCs). In this work, an efficient CoMoO 4 /Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (CMO/ZCS) photocatalyst with p-n heterojunction was constructed by incorporating Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (ZCS) nanoparticles into CoMoO 4 (CMO) microflowers. Although CMO had limited activity in H 2 production under visible light irradiation, it could largely boosting the H 2 production efficiency of ZCS nanoparticles by oxidizing p-chlorobenzyl alcohol (Cl-PhCH 2 OH) in organic solvent. In the CMO/ZCS composites, the best rates of H 2 and Cl-PhCHO reached 34.28 and 35.87 mmol g −1 h −1 , respectively. The p-n heterojunction formed between CMO and ZCS may be the main enhanced reason of the excellent performance, as it could effectively improve the separation, transfer and utilization of PCCs. The design of the CMO/ZCS catalyst not only optimizes the migration and utilization of PCCs, but also provides crucial theoretical guidance and experimental insights for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Graphitic carbon nitride is considered as an ideal semiconductor material for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution due to its suitable energy band structure, durability and environmental friendliness. To further improve the catalytic performance of g-C3N4, nickel phosphide-loaded one-dimensional tubular carbon nitride (Ni2P/TCN) was prepared by thermal polymerization and photo deposition. The beneficial effect of the one-dimensional tubular structure on hydrogen generation was mainly attributed to its larger specific surface area (increased light absorption) as well as the linear movement of the carriers, which reduced their diffusion distance to the surface and facilitated the separation of photogenerated carriers. The loading of Ni2P co-catalyst improved the visible light utilization efficiency and enabled the migration of photogenerated electrons towards Ni2P, which ultimately reacted with the enhanced adsorbed H+on the Ni2P surface to facilitate the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process. This study provides new clues for the further development of efficient, environmentally friendly and low-cost g-C3N4catalysts.

H 2 -rich syngas production via microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) of lignocellulosic biomass has recently gained significant attention in biorefineries. Herein, a novel pearl-like calcium oxide (P-CaO) was developed to investigate the dual roles of CaO in H 2 enhancement and CO 2 absorption during MAP of lignocellulosic biomass, dedicated to achieving high production of H 2 -rich syngas. Utilizing a self-constructed MAP system, the different catalytic performance between P-CaO and other metal oxides were examined, revealing that our P-CaO produced the highest H 2 yield (257 NmL/g corn stover , 7.6 times higher than no-catalyst group and 2.2 times higher than commercial CaO group), and lowest CO 2 production (44 NmL/g feedstock ), with syngas purity exceeding 72 vol% at 600°C. This increase in H 2 -rich syngas production demonstrated universal applicability across other biomass feedstocks. Finally, the study delved into the microstructural changes and phase transition mechanisms of P-CaO, shedding insights into gas formation pathways. The P-CaO nanoparticles, with abundant alkaline sites, excellent adsorption capacity and large specific surface area due to aggregate, facilitate the secondary cracking of organic intermediates like phenols, thus promoting the production of H 2 , while CO 2 adsorption derives a favorable shift in the water–gas shift equilibrium. These findings are expected to offer critical insights and serve as a reference for the development of efficient catalysts in the next-generation hydrogen industry.

Catalytic ceramic membranes (CCM) have attracted increasing attention in membrane material research due to their catalytic and separation functions. However, it is difficult to obtain stable CCM with excellent catalytic performance via common methods. Herein, SiC ceramic membrane loaded with Co, Cu bimetal were prepared by vacuum filtration method and heat treated at H 2 atmosphere (CoCu@SiC-H CCM). Results confirmed that heat-treated at H 2 atmosphere can enhance the catalytic performance of membrane. The first-order rate constant of the CoCu@SiC-H CCM/ peroxymonosulfate(PMS) system reached 0.01473 ms −1 , which is 10 3 -10 5 times greater than previously researches (0.0409–0.7588 min −1 ). Optimal CoCu@SiC-H CCM/PMS system achieved 98.02 % degradation of sulfamethoxazole in 1 min. The CoCu@SiC-H CCM presents outstanding catalytic performance due to the generation of Co 0 and the increase of oxygen vacancy concentration. OH and SO 4 − play important roles in the CoCu@SiC-H CCM/PMS degradation system. This work provides a new design method for preparing catalytic ceramic membranes with excellent catalytic performance, which can efficiently treat refractory wastewater in harsh environments.
