Highly efficient aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid over halloysite nanotubes-templated nitrogen-doped carbon supported bimetallic AuPd catalyst

Fang Wang,Changhao Yan,Rui Jiang,Yao Chen,Yanan Wei,Yu Cao,Wen Guan,Pengwei Huo,Yunlei Zhang

Aerobic oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is an important way to produce bioplastic monomer . Herein, halloysite nanotubes (HNT)-templated layered porous hollow rod-shaped nitrogen-doped carbon supported bimetallic AuPd catalysts (Au m Pd n /HRN x C) with different nitrogen contents and bimetallic nanoparticles size were employed for the highly efficient aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA in sodium carbonate aqueous solution. Catalytic experimental results uncovered the possible reaction pathway, and the kinetics study further confirmed the oxidation of intermediate FFCA to FDCA was the rate-controlled step. Benefiting from the synergy between nitrogen-doped carbon support and bimetallic nanoparticles, the Au 3 Pd 1 /HRN 5 C catalyst obtained the highest HMF conversion of 100% and FDCA yield of 99.9% under the optimal reaction conditions. In-situ FT-IR study revealed the adsorption configuration of HMF, and the ESR test proved that the active substance was superoxide radical. Furthermore, the catalyst showed good stability and reusability . This work provides an efficient, economical and environmentally friendly raw clay mineral derived heterogeneous catalyst for the large-scale production of FDCA from HMF.

Facile synthesis and characterization of ZnS polymorphs/Halloysite composite for efficiently selective adsorption of Al(III) from acidic rare earth ions solution

Weiquan Yuan,Jingzhong Kuang,Mingming Yu,Zheyu Huang,Xiaoyuan Wang,Junjie Xiao,Shaoyan Zhang,Hao Cheng,Yiqiang Yang

Removal of aluminum ion from rare earth ions solution by selective adsorption was one of the promising methods for green enrichment of the acidic rare earth solution containing aluminum ions. Herein, a series of ZnS polymorphs/halloysite composites and Wurtzite/Halloysite (WZ@Hal) with different wurtzite content were prepared by facile one-step hydrothermal method using halloysite as the substance. The phase composition, microstructure and specific surface area of the WZ@Hal composite were characterized and the selective adsorption behavior of the WZ@Hal composite for aluminum and rare earth ions under different conditions was studied. The results showed that WZ@Hal composite loaded with hexagonal wurtzite showed good adsorption selectivity for Al(III) with a spontaneous exothermic process, while SP@Hal composite loaded with cubic sphalerite displayed no obvious adsorption capacity for both Al(III) and Er(III) with an endothermic process. The WZ@Hal composite was synthesized through strong electron interaction between sulfur atoms of wurtzite with oxygen atoms on the surface of halloysite. The WZ@Hal exhibited a fast adsorption rate a fast adsorption rate (k 2 was 0.0713 g⋅mg −1 ⋅min −1 ) and an excellent selectivity coefficient (K s was 237). The adsorption process of WZ@Hal for Al(III) in mixed solution was described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and controlled by the chemisorption. WZ@Hal showed excellent regeneration and maintained high selective adsorption performance in adsorption–desorption process. The adsorption mechanism was that aluminum ions were adsorbed by electron interaction with sulfur atoms of wurtzite and oxygen atoms of halloysite at the interface of the wurtzite and halloysite. WZ@Hal composite showed excellent selective adsorption performance in the adsorption and separation process of acidic mixed solution of aluminum ion and rare earth ions.

Construction of ammonium polyphosphate-modified halloysite nanotubes on phase change material microcapsules for the enhancement of thermophysical performance and flame retardant properties

Moyun Kang,Wei Lin,Chenchen Liang,Jielin Zeng,Yapeng Wang,Yu Guan,Jiaji Cheng

Organic microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCMs) are regarded as promising for building energy efficiency while the low thermal conductivity and flammability limit their further application. Aiming at improving the thermal response performance and flame retardancy of the MPCMs, the MPCMs embedded by ammonium polyphosphate-modified halloysite nanotubes (a-HNTs) are developed and then applied in the epoxy resin (EP) coatings. Herein, the ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is grafted onto HNTs as a flame retardant for the first time and the resultant nanotubes are successfully embedded into the shell of traditional MPCMs. As a result, the obtained microcapsules (a-MPCMs) possess a regular spherical morphology and the desired chemical composition. Moreover, the a-HNTs with their unique inorganic tubular structure connect the inside and outside of the original polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) shell and act as the thermally conductive channel, which greatly facilitates the conversion of external heat to the latent heat of the capric acid (CA) core. The phase change data show that the embedding of a-HNTs has little effect on the encapsulation efficiency of MPCMs, and the latent heat of a-MPCMs is 118.3 J/g. Meanwhile, the a-HNTs/PMMA hybrid shell also significantly improves the thermal stability of MPCMs with the highest residual weight of 24.3%. With the addition of a-MPCMs, the resultant temperature-control coatings (a-MPCMs/EP) hold a high thermal cycle stability and excellent temperature control performance with less temperature fluctuation. In addition, a-HNTs also provide superior flame retardant properties for a-MPCMs/EP. Compared to the EP composites with the same mass fraction of pristine MPCMs added (MPCMs/EP), the pHRR and THR of a-MPCMs/EP are reduced by 30.2% and 4.5%, respectively. Through flame retardant modification of HNTs and incorporating them into the shell material of MPCMs, this work provides a promising approach to the development of multifunctional MPCMs with enhanced thermophysical performance and flame retardant properties.

Differential regulation and the underlying mechanisms of clay minerals to Escherichia coli under the stress of polymyxin B: Comparing halloysite with kaolinite

Juan Liu,Pingxiao Wu,Fang Wang,Wenchao Niu,Zubair Ahmed,Meiqing Chen,Guining Lu,Zhi Dang

The reuse of polymyxin B (PMB) has attracted extensive attention. Although the resistance mechanism to PMB is clear, there are few reports on the regulation mechanisms and effects of clay minerals on bacteria induced by PMB. The focus of this study is to investigate the multidrug resistance, cell morphology and physiological modification of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) exposed to PMB in the presence and absence of clay minerals. To be specific, E. coli was cultured serially for 15 days in the increasing concentration of PMB, with or without halloysite or kaolinite . The potential influence mechanisms of halloysite and kaolinite on E. coli was analyzed by proteomics , antibiotic resistance testing, confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared. The results showed that kaolinite could obviously promote the growth of bacteria. Moreover, compared with halloysite, kaolinite could stimulate the overexpression of PMB resistance-related proteins ArnA, ArnB and EptA in E. coli exposed to PMB, and promote the synthesis of peptidoglycan and activate glycolysis pathway to produce energy. In contrast, halloysite was able to regulate the production of low molecular weight thiols by E. coli to prevent bacteria from producing excessive reactive oxygen species , activate the oxidative phosphorylation pathway to supply energy for bacterial life activities, and reduce multidrug resistance of E. coli in a variety of ways. These findings are essential for exploring the impacts of clay minerals on the emergence and spread of multi-drug resistant strains in the environment.

Packed hybrids of gold nanoparticles and halloysite nanotubes for dispersive solid phase extraction of triazine herbicides, and their subsequent determination by HPLC

Qin Zucheng,Jiang Yanxiao,Piao Huilan,Tao Shuo,Sun Ying,Wang Xinghua,Ma Pinyi,Song Daqian

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were functionalized with gold nanoparticles. The morphology and structures of this composite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and surface area and pore-size analyses. The material was employed, in conjunction with a syringe pump and an organic filter head, to the enrichment of five triazines (atrazine, desmetryn, prometorn, tebumeton, ametryn) in spiked rice samples. Several parameters that may affect the extraction efficiencies, including type and volume of extraction solvent, amount of sorbent, times of ultrasonic extraction and adsorption, volume and flow rate of elution solvent, were optimized. Following elution with acetonitrile, the herbicides were quantified by using HPLC. Under the optimum conditions, the LODs of the method, when applied to spiked rice samples, are the range from 0.06 to 1.32 ng g −1 (LODs = 3SD/k). The relative intra-day and inter-day recoveries ranged from 80.6 to 106.5% and 80.4–107.3%, respectively, and relative standard deviations ranged from 0.8 to 8.7% and 3.6–9.6%, respectively. Packed hybrids of gold nanoparticles and halloysite nanotubes (Au/HNTs) were prepared and applied to the dispersive solid-phase extraction by packed sorbent of five triazine herbicides from rice.

Geyuan Li,Jun Zha,Muchuan Niu,Fan Hu,Xuanhong Hui,Tianyu Tang,Meriem Fizir,Hua He

An effective magnetic surface imprinted polymer with high adsorption ability and selectivity has been designed. Three magnetic halloysite nanotubes combined with molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) composites were fabricated. Halloysite nanotubes (Hal nanotubes) were us as supporting matrix, norfloxacin (NOR) as template molecules, Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APTES) and Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MTEOS) used as monomers and tetramethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as cross linker through a one-pot sol-gel polymerization. The resulting MMIP were characterized by various techniques. The adsorption isotherms , adsorption kinetics and selective recognition of MMIP were investigated in detail. The imprinted polymers with bifunctional monomer possess the highest adsorption capacity (312.08 μg·mg −1 ) and the best select factor (5.41). After optimization of solid phase extraction (SPE) condition, imprinted polymer with bifunctional monomer possess the best extraction ability and can be successfully applied into the extraction of norfloxacin in lake water. In addition, the SPE-ultraviolet method established possesses good accuracy and precision. Hydrochloric acid (9:1/v:v) could be used as the best elution and the magnetic imprinted polymer could be reused for at least seven times.

In this study, polyurethane-based solid-solid phase change materials with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs)-hybrid graphene aerogel (GA) have been fabricated through vacuum impregnation. As a supporting skeleton, the air-dried HNTs-GA with continuous porous structure endows the system with excellent light-thermal (η = 75.6%) and electro-thermal (η = 67.2%) energy conversion and storage ability. HNTs not only improve the reduction degree of GA, but also enhance the latent heat of the system through heterogeneous nucleation effects. The synthesized materials with high latent heat, excellent thermal reliability and stability, remarkable light/electro-thermal energy conversion ability show great potentials in applications of energy storage devices.

Hollow imprinted polymer nanorods with a tunable shell using halloysite nanotubes as a sacrificial template for selective recognition and separation of chloramphenicol

Atian Xie,Jiangdong Dai,Xiang Chen,Tianbian Zou,Jinsong He,Zhongshuai Chang,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan

The wide use of antibiotics in human therapy and veterinary practice has resulted in the presence of residual antibiotic compounds in water environments, which are harmful to ecology and health. In this work, novel hollow molecularly imprinted nanorods (HMINs) with uniform and controllable thickness of the polymer shell were successfully prepared via a combination of in situ surface precipitation polymerization and halloysite nanotubes sacrificial template method, and were used as an advanced selective nanoadsorbent to remove chloramphenicol (CAP). The physicochemical properties of HMINs were well characterized by FE-SEM, TEM, FT-IR and TG/DTA. HMINs with a shell thickness of 62 nm (HMINs-2) displayed excellent adsorption capacity and fast kinetics. The experimental adsorption equilibrium and kinetic data were best described by the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order rate equation, respectively. Furthermore, HMINs-2 possessed highly specific recognition to CAP in aqueous solutions, as compared with other reference antibiotics. Meanwhile, HMINs-2 also had excellent dispersibility, regeneration properties and thermal stability for the promising potential application in wastewater treatment.

Enhancement mechanism of the comprehensive performance of all-solid-state polymer electrolytes by halloysite nanotubes: Construction of efficient lithium-ion conduction channels

Zhitao Yang,Zhen Zhang,Yong Liu,Yiping Fang,Cheng Li,Xianwu Cao

Considering the current issues with poly(ethylene oxide)-based all-solid-state polymer electrolytes (PEO-ASSPEs) employed in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), such as low ionic conductivity, low lithium-ion transference number, narrow electrochemical stability window, and poor cyclic stability. This study introduces oxygen-vacancy-rich halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) into the PEO matrix to fabricate a flexible composite polymer electrolyte (CPEs) via a solvent-free method. The interaction between HNTs and LiTFSI in the PEO matrix serves to mitigate the ionic solvation effect, increase the number of free lithium-ion, and reduce the lithium-ion migration energy barrier. Additionally, the internal framework formed by the mutual stacking of HNTs reduces the number of entanglements in polymer molecular chains, enhances the mobility of the chains, and generates a continuous interface effect, forming fast lithium-ion transport channels. The CPEs prepared in this study are in conformity with the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) empirical equation. The CPE containing 10 wt% HNTs exhibits a high ionic conductivity (7.15 × 10 −4  S cm −1 ) at 25 °C, a high lithium-ion transference number (0.600), a wide electrochemical stability window (5.5 V), and excellent cyclic performance (capacity retention of 82.02 % after 100 cycles at 0.1C), satisfying the electrochemical performance requirements for ASSPEs in LIBs.

Preparation of hierarchical porous carbons from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose via halloysite template strategy coupled with KOH-activation for efficient removal of chloramphenicol

Ruilong Zhang,Zhiping Zhou,Atian Xie,Jiangdong Dai,Jiuyun Cui,Jihui Lang,Maobin Wei,Xiaohui Dai,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan

The wide applications of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicines have attracted ever-increasing attention due to their potential adverse effects for ecological environment, therefore, it is urgent and important to efficiently remove antibiotics from water. In this paper, we prepared hierarchical porous carbons from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCHPCs) via halloysite template and KOH-activation method for efficient removal of chloramphenicol. The physicochemical properties of CMCHPCs are analyzed by means of different characterizations. The adsorption properties of CMCHPCs are evaluated by equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic adsorption experiments. In addition, the effects of ionic strength, solution pH, and humic acid on adsorption are studied. The results indicated CMCHPCs exhibit higher maximum monolayer adsorption capacity up to 769.95 mg/g and shows good regenerability and adaptability. Importantly, the adsorption mechanisms of chloramphenicol adsorbed onto the CMCHPCs are also discussed.

Bio-derived modified halloysite nanotubes as eco-friendly flame retardants to endow epoxy with high thermal stability, mechanical performance and flame retardancy

Qing-Qing Bi,Ying-Ming Li,Lu He,De-Yi Wang

High-performance and multifunctional epoxy resins (EP) hold significant promise for diverse applications, yet grappling with the flammability, low thermal stability and mechanical property. In this work, a hierarchical core–shell-dot nanostructure (PDH@β-CD-AA-Fe) was designed via the in-situ polymerization of dopamine hydrochloride (DOPA) on the surface of halloysite nanotube (HNT), then hybriding with aminobenzeneboronic acid (AA), cyclodextrins (β-CD) and transition metal iron ions (Fe). Only 2.5 wt% PDH@β-CD-AA-Fe imparted EP with UL-94 V-0 level at a LOI of 29.3 %, a 52.8 % decreased of peak heat release rate (pHRR), accompanied by a higher proportion of graphitized char layer via the interface-catalyzed charring process. Remarkably, the tensile strength and flexural strength concurrently increased by 40.0 % and 24.9 % comparing to that of neat EP, respectively. Furthermore, a significant reduction in temperature directly above the standard room’s ceiling within 500 s of ignition, accompanied by substantial decreases in CO concentration and smoke emission according to the Fire Dynamics Simulator. Prospectively, the rational strategy of constructing an interface catalysis charring and active organic surface of HNT exploits a highly efficient strategy for developing high-performance EP.

Construction of chitosan/wurtzite multiple sites on mesoporous halloysite and selective removal of Al(III) from rare earth ions solution: Microcalorimetry investigation

Weiquan Yuan,Jingzhong Kuang,Dan Ding,Zheyu Huang

Herein, organic/inorganic multiple adsorption sites were constructed on halloysite to intensify the selective adsorption performance of the adsorbent for Al(III) in rare earth solutions. The adsorption heat behavior and thermodynamics of the composite for different ion systems were investigated using microcalorimetry. The results showed that chitosan formed a mesoporous membrane on the acid-treated calcined halloysite (Hal H) substrate through a strong electron interaction between the nitrogen atom of the amino group and the oxygen atom of Si O structure on Hal H. Wurtzite was loaded onto the chitosan mesoporous membrane as nanoparticles and partially oxidized to the ZnO phase of wurtzite. [email protected] demonstrated excellent adsorption capacity ( q max (Al 3+ ) was 102.04 mg/g), selectivity performance (Ks was 1583.06), adaptation to varying ion concentrations and structural stability in the mixed solution. Solution pH, ion concentration and temperature significantly affected the adsorption heat behavior and thermodynamics of the composite in different ion systems. The efficient selective adsorption of Al(III) by [email protected] was achieved through chelation with the amide and amino groups of chitosan and chemical interaction with sulfur groups of wurtzite. This work exemplifies a promising strategy for designing novel mineral materials with strong selective adsorption properties for the separation of Al(III) and rare earth ions.
