An efficient portable gas sensor was developed to meet the needs of air quality monitoring, for the detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). In this study, coaxial electrospinning technology was used to synthesize porous nanofibers of indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) composite zinc oxide (ZnO), which are recognized as special semiconductor ceramic materials. The best sample (NFs.1–6) consists of a nanoparticle-based structure with interconnected pores, in contrast to the more compact, tightly bonded nanofibers. This porous structure enhances gas adsorption capacity, improving the sensor’s performance. At 200 °C, the synthesized In 2 O 3 @ZnO (NFs.1–6) nanofibers exhibited a high response value of 171.25 and a fast response time of 5 s to 100 parts per million (ppm) NO 2 . The excellent characteristic is attributed to its uniform structure and n-n homojunction, making the response values 38 times and 98 times that of pure ZnO and pure In 2 O 3 , respectively. Building on the research findings, a smart mask was developed that incorporates the nanofiber sensor to monitor NO 2 concentrations in the air, offering an innovative approach to wearable gas sensor technology by semiconductor ceramic materials.

Simultaneous desalination and antibiotic degradation in aquaculture wastewater. • First integration of SPR heating and photocatalysis in single-component system. • Defect-engineered N-In 2 O 3-x nanoplatform achieves full solar spectrum utilization. • Outdoor device enables natural sunlight-driven fresh water production. • Scale-up field test shows practical treatment of saline aquaculture wastewater. The discharge of saline aquaculture wastewater containing persistent antibiotics poses a growing challenge due to its high salinity, complex composition, and resistance to conventional treatment. Here, we developed a solar-driven treatment process that coupled interfacial evaporation with in situ photocatalytic degradation, enabling simultaneous freshwater production and antibiotic removal without chemical inputs. This process is realized using a defect-engineered plasmonic nitrogen-doped, oxygen-deficient indium oxide interface derived from a metal-organic framework, which integrates rapid water transport, efficient photothermal conversion, and solar-driven reactive species generation. As a result, the system achieved a high evaporation rate of 3.16 kg m -2 h -1 , excellent salt resistance, and >97% tetracycline removal within 120 min. Notably, comparable degradation performance was maintained in real aquaculture wastewater, indicating strong resistance to matrix effects under high-salinity conditions. Outdoor field tests further demonstrated stable freshwater production (12.84 kg m -2 day -1 ) that meets WHO drinking water standards, along with effective antibiotic removal under natural sunlight. With an estimated materials-level cost of approximately $10.7 m -2 under bulk-procurement conditions and stable operation over 10 days, the system demonstrates preliminary potential for modular solar-driven treatment of antibiotic-contaminated aquaculture wastewater. Photocatalytic hydrogen production technology is an efficient method to solve the environmental pollution problem and obtain renewable energy. To improve the hydrogen production efficiency, it is still a great challenge to develop novel photocatalysts with high activity and high stability. In this work, a hollow rod-shaped Cu-In-Zn-S@ZnCo 2 O 4 @In 2 O 3 tandem heterojunction photocatalyst was designed and synthesized. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic hydrogen production amount was up to 21404.54 μmol·g −1 in 5 h. The hollow tandem heterojunction would improve the light absorption, facilitate the electron transfer, inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and provide more active sites for hydrogen production reaction. The design of Cu-In-Zn-S@ZnCo 2 O 4 @In 2 O 3 photocatalyst provided an effective method to enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance.

We have successfully prepared a metal–organic-framework (MOF) derived In2O3 flower-like hierarchical architecture sensor using a near room-temperature template-free strategy and a subsequent accurate annealing process. The In2O3 flower-like hierarchical architecture sensor exhibits good sensitivity to trimethylamine. The fabricated sensor has a relatively low working temperature of 140 °C, a response of 35.2 for 20 ppm trimethylamine, a response time as fast as 2 s, and good selectivity and stability. In addition, the sensor exhibits good conductivity. The sensor's enhanced gas sensing performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of its unique flower-like hierarchical architecture, porous hierarchical morphology and abundant oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, the possible growth mechanism and the gas sensing mechanism are also discussed in detail.

Rational design of highly efficient catalysts for the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB) to produce hydrogen is still challenging. The size and shape effects of catalysts on the performance have been well documented in the past decades. Nevertheless, there is still much space for study on the crystal structure-dependent catalytic performance. Herein, In2O3-supported hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) Ni (hcp-Ni/In2O3) has been prepared via impregnation of corresponding nanoparticles onto In2O3. The stronger electronic metal–support interaction in hcp-Ni/In2O3 than in fcc-Ni/In2O3 endows it with high capacity to activate AB molecules. It exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution activity from catalytic dehydrogenation of AB with a rate of 7.5 molH2 mol–1Ni min–1, which is 1.7 times that of the supported fcc sample. The systematic experiments and DFT calculations demonstrate that the hcp catalyst possesses stronger hydrophilicity and lower activation energy for the dissociation of H2O than the fcc counterpart. Moreover, the assistance with sonication enhances the process of mass and heat transfer and accelerates the reaction. This work provides a new way for the achievement of efficient metastable catalytic systems and promotes the construction of advanced devices toward various applications.

The rational design and fabrication of junction-based photocatalysts is of great importance to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of water splitting. Herein, a new heterophase junction photocatalyst consisting of cubic bixbyite and rhombohedral corundum In2O3 (c-In2O3 and h-In2O3) was readily prepared by directly annealing an InOOH precursor in an inert atmosphere. The resulting c/h-In2O3 heterophase junction photocatalyst showed an optimal hydrogen production rate of 0.73 mmol g−1 h−1 in a 6 h period reaction from alkaline formaldehyde solution in the presence of molecular oxygen under visible light irradiation, which was approximately 5.6 and 3.4 times higher than that of single-component c-In2O3 and h-In2O3, respectively. The superior photocatalytic activity of the c/h-In2O3 heterophase junction was partially attributed to its appropriate band gap and band positions. Spectroscopic characterization and photoelectrochemistry experiments indicated that the heterophase junction photocatalyst could effectively enhance charge separation and transfer abilities between h-In2O3 and c-In2O3. Furthermore, molecular O2 was found to play a key role in mediating the photocatalytic H2 evolution from formaldehyde oxidation as a catalytic electron scavenger, and O2 was not consumed throughout the reaction. Thus, the photocatalytic activity was also greatly enhanced because the adsorption ability of oxygen species was effectively improved after the formation of heterophase junctions.

Reducing the recombination rate of photoexcited electron–hole pairs is always a great challenging work for the photocatalytic technique. In response to this issue, herein, a novel Z-scheme CuInS2/In2O3 with interfacial S–O linkages was synthesized by a hydrothermal and subsequently annealing method. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) measurements confirmed the formation of covalent S–O bonds between CuInS2 and In2O3. The quenching and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests revealed the Z-scheme transfer route of photogenerated carriers over the CuInS2/In2O3 heterojunctions, which was further verified theoretically via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As expected, the CuInS2/In2O3 heterojunctions showed significantly boosted photocatalytic activities for lomefloxacin degradation and Cr(VI) reduction under visible light illumination compared with the bare materials. Accordingly, a synergistic photocatalytic mechanism of Z-scheme heterostructures and interfacial S–O bonding was proposed, in which the S–O linkage could act as a specific bridge to modify the Z-scheme manner for accelerating the interfacial charge transmission. Furthermore, the CuInS2/In2O3 heterojunction also exhibited excellent performance perceived in the stability and reusability tests. This work provides a new approach for designing and fabricating novel Z-scheme heterostructures with a high-efficiency charge transfer route.

Building sulfide/oxide heterostructure photocatalysts is not only beneficial for the separation and transfer of photo-generated carriers in photocatalytic reactions but also an effective means of broadening the light absorption range of oxides by introducing narrow-bandgap sulfides. However, the construction of highly-efficient sulfide/oxide heterostructures with intimate and extensive contact between different components for visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production remains a challenge. Herein, a novel sulfide/oxide heterostructure of CdS/In2O3 hierarchical nanotubes was synthesized starting from a metal–organic framework (MOF). In such a heterostructure, CdS and In2O3 are integrated by close contact of corresponding small nanoparticles, which is beneficial for the separation and transfer of photo-generated charge carriers. Benefiting from the intimate interface, suitable energy band structure, as well as the inherent advantages of MOFs-derived nanomaterials, the optimal CdS/In2O3 hierarchical nanotubes showed the best activity in visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production without any cocatalysts, which was 78.6 times and 16.9 times higher than activities of In2O3 hierarchical nanotubes and CdS nanoparticles, respectively.

Although many researchers have reported CO 2 hydrogenation to various C1 chemicals, it is still challenging to directly and selectively convert CO 2 to C 2 -C 4 hydrocarbons in terms of overcoming the extreme inertness of CO 2 and a high C C coupling barrier. In the present work, we report an efficient integration of methanol-synthesis and the methanol-to-hydrocarbons with the bifunctional catalyst component of In 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 and SAPO-5. These tandem reactions exhibit an excellent relative selectivity of C 2 -C 4 (83%) with a suppressed CH 4 relative selectivity less than 3% at T = 300 °C. A detailed analysis indicates that the partially reduced indium oxide surface (In 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 ) can better activate CO 2 and promote the synthesis of methanol than In 2 O 3 alone, and C C coupling is subsequently manipulated within the confined acidic pores of SAPO-5 according to XRD, H 2 -TPR, CO 2 -TPD, SEM and TEM. Furthermore, the proximity of two components and the content of Si also play an important role in such outstanding selectivity to C 2 -C 4 . Our study paves a new path for the direct synthesis of lower hydrocarbons.

The reduction of CO 2 achieved by photocatalysis can simultaneously alleviate the energy crisis and solve environmental issues. Nevertheless, it remains challenging for the rational design of photocatalysts with high-efficiency carrier migration ability. Herein, the Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /In 2 O 3 (CN/INO) heterostructure was fabricated via metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) assisted thermal deposition which could form a fully encapsulated hollow tubular structure. The unique structure was based on the MOFs-derived hollow hexagonal In 2 O 3 tubular integrated with ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 . The Z-scheme CN/INO heterojunction exhibited a larger specific surface area and excellent charge separation efficiency. Benefiting from the above features, the Z-scheme CN/INO heterojunction demonstrated superior performance on photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The formation of CO and CH 3 OH over the optimized CN/INO-2 catalyst was 7.94 and 1.44 µmol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 , respectively. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) was carried out to further investigate the situation of charge transfer on the interface of CN/INO. The in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was measured to confirm the immediate products and the possible mechanism of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction was proposed. This work provided a MOFs-assisted strategy to construct a Z-scheme system for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

The conversion of CO 2 into high-value chemicals has drawn a great deal of consideration, of which the most ideal product is lower olefins. However, the modified Fischer–Tropsch (F-T) synthesis with CO as an intermediate shows poor selectivity for lower olefins. Here, a list of bifunctional catalysts consisting of SAPO-34 zeolites with adjustable silicon contents and In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 were synthesized. In the reaction process, CO 2 is first hydrogenated to methanol over an In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 catalyst, and then the generated methanol rapidly diffuses to the adjacent zeolite catalyst to react to lower olefins. The selectivity of lower olefins (88.3%) and conversion rate of CO 2 (23.3%) was achieved over In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 and SAPO-34-0.05 at 633 K, a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 4500 ml·gcat –1 ·h –1 , and H 2 /CO 2 /Ar = 3:1:1. The catalytic performance remained stable after 50 h of reaction. Characterization analysis showed that Si content affected the content of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) and morphology of SAPO-34, resulting in different distribution of reaction intermediates. Tetramethyl-benzenes, as important intermediate species, had a slower conversion rate on the SAPO-34 with low Si content and nanosheet morphology, which led to high lower olefins selectivity. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Herein, pristine indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) and rare earth (Ce, Tm, Eu, Er, and Tb)-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes were synthesized by a facile one-step electrospinning method. Rare-earth (RE) doping increases the number of active sites on the surface, which enhances the electrical response and gas-sensing performance of In 2 O 3 , with different RE elements causing different enhancement effects. Transmission electron microscopy elemental mapping shows a homogeneous distribution of RE elements on the whole nanotube. Analysis of the gas-sensing mechanism shows that RE doping modifies the oxygen species adsorbed on the sensor surface. Our findings promote the development of new dopant-based metal oxide semiconductors for high-performance gas sensing.
