Boosting photo-Fenton performance by enhancing mass transfer process of peroxy sulphate (PS) and inhibiting the recombination of photo-generation carriers is an appealing strategy. Herein, ZnO/BiOCl porous microsphere assembled by thin nanosheets was successfully fabricated via microwave-assistant method. The results discern that BOZ-30 can eliminate 75.2 % carbamazepine (CBZ, 2.5 mg L −1 ) in 180 min, which is 1.7 and 1.3 times folder than ZnO and BiOCl, respectively. Moreover, the catalytic mechanism revealed that 3D axial channels and interfacial oxygen vacancies (IOVs) enhance mass transfer process of PS, promote forming of BOZ-PS* complex, and boost the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Therefore, myriad electrons are quickly arrived at surface active sites through thin nanosheets and trapped by BOZ-PS* composites, and then effectively transfer to CBZ. Eventually, PS was activated under the synergistic of IOVs and 3D axial channels. Furthermore, the structure-properties relationship of removal rate, specific area and total oxygen vacancies was established. This work shed a new light on to remove refractory pollution by the cooperation of defect engineering and morphology engineering.

Although efficient removal of Cs from wastewater is of great importance because of the nuclear energy sustainable development and public health, removing cesium is challenging for the high concentrations of sodium and potassium ions coexist. In this work, we synthesized the first novel bismuth-doped layered tin sulfide (KBS) and applied it to the efficient green adsorption of liquid cesium resources. KBS could reach the adsorption equilibrium for Cs + within only 2 min with a theoretical adsorption capacity of 425.55 mg/g. Furthermore, the adsorption performance remained reliable after 10 cycles of use. The structure and properties of KBS were explained at the molecular level by DFT calculations, and the calculated results were in sound agreement with the experimental data. Meanwhile, in this study, the material was reinforced and shaped by the electrostatic interaction of Zein and sodium alginate hydrogel, and finally, Zein@SA/KBS spherical composite adsorbent was obtained. The problem of the difficult recovery of adsorbent and the secondary contamination was solved. The adsorption performance of Zein@SA/KBS on Cs + was better than most composite adsorbents and showed reliable stability. Therefore, the new microspherical adsorbent (Zein@SA/KBS) has great potential for industrial application in removing radioactive cesium from wastewater.

Rapid and accurate nitrite ions (NO 2 − ) detection is necessary to ensure food safety. Herein, a new portable method for detecting NO 2 − using hydrogel microspheres is proposed. Specifically, N-(1-naphthyl) ethylenediamine (NED) was immobilized on sodium alginate (SA) to obtain the SA-NED conjugate via covalent linking. The SA-NED microspheres were prepared in a Ca 2+ solution using an extrusion strategy based on the strong chelation between SA and Ca 2+ . The SA-NED microspheres exhibited superior adsorption capacity for NO 2 − , which agrees with the Langmuir isotherm model. Then, based on the Griess reaction , a microsphere-based colorimetric sensor was developed for rapid, quantitative, and on-site NO 2 − detection via a smartphone-based sensing platform. The entire detection procedure can be completed within 35 min. The microsphere-based sensor exhibited a detection limit of 0.02 μg mL –1 with recoveries ranging from 89.7% to 104.8% in different food samples. Moreover, the microsphere-based sensor showed good tolerance to the complex food matrix. Water and milk samples could be directly measured without pretreatment , and pickles and sausages only required simple homogenization before measurements. Our study provides an effective approach for rapid and on-site monitoring of NO 2 − .

Metal (aluminum and boron) based energetic materials have been wildly applied in various fields including aerospace, explosives and micro-devices due to their high energy density. Unfortunately, the low combustion efficiency and reactivity of metal fuels, especially boron (B), severely limit their practical applications. Herein, multi-component 3D microspheres of HMX/B/Al/PTFE (HBA) have been designed and successfully prepared by emulsion and solvent evaporation method to achieve superior energy and combustion reactivity. The reactivity and energy output of HBA are systematically measured by ignition-burning test, constant-volume explosion vessel system and bomb calorimetry. Due to the increased interfacial contact and reaction area, HBA shows higher flame propagation rate, faster pressurization rate and larger combustion heat of 29.95 cm/s, 1077 kPa/s, and 6164.43 J/g, which is 1.5 times, 3.5 times, and 1.03 times of the physical mixed counterpart (HBA-P). Meanwhile, HBA also shows enhanced energy output and reactivity than 3D microspheres of HMX/B/PTFE (HB) resulting from the high reactivity of Al. The reaction mechanism of 3D microspheres is comprehensively investigated through combustion emission spectral and thermal analysis (TG-DSC-MS). The superior reactivity and energy of HBA originate from the surface etching of fluorine to the inert shell (Al 2 O 3 and B 2 O 3 ) and the initiation effect of Al to B. This work offers a promising approach to design and prepare high-performance energetic materials for the practical applications.

The development of the effective 3D printing strategy for diverse functional monomers is still challenging. Moreover, the conventional 3D printing hydrogels are usually soft and fragile due to the lack of an energy dissipation mechanism. Herein, a microsphere mediating ink preparation strategy is developed to provide tailored rheological behavior for various monomer direct ink writings. The chitosan microspheres are used as an exemplary material due to their tunable swelling ratio under the acid-drived electrostatic repulsion of the protonated amino groups. The rheological behaviors of the swollen chitosan microsphere (SCM) are independent on the monomer types, and various functional secondary polymers could be carried at a wide loading ratio by the acid driving. The SCM reinforces the hydrogel as the sacrificial bonds. With the adjustable composition, the 3D printing hydrogel mechanical properties are tunable in wide windows: strength (0.4–1.01 MPa), dissipated energy (0.11–3.25 MJ m–3), and elongation at break (47–626%). With the excellent printing and mechanical properties, the SCM inks enable multi-functional integration for soft device production, such as 4D printing robots and wearable strain sensors. We anticipate that this microsphere mediating 3D printing strategy can inspire new possibilities for the design of the robust hydrogels with a broad range of functionalities and mechanical performances.

Rapid, high-efficient adsorbents with efficient solid-liquid separation ability has broad application prospects in the treatment of dye wastewater. In this study, polydopamine and methacryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride were grafted onto hollow glass microspheres to prepare the enhanced polydopamine shell structure adsorbent with self-floating ability. Furthermore, the adsorbent achieves high-efficiency surface solid-liquid separation, which overcomes the disadvantages of the traditional separation methods. Characterizations of the as-synthesized microspheres were performed using various techniques such as SEM, EDS, BET, XPS, FT-IR, TGA and XRD. The adsorbent achieved rapid and high-efficient adsorption of alizarin cyanine green F via the interactions of electrostatic attracting and π-π stacking, and under the optimal experimental conditions, the removal efficiency of 0.10 m mol L −1 dye solution reaches 94.51%, and the adsorption process reaches equilibrium within 60 min. Adsorption isotherms and kinetics data of the adsorbent were well fitted by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, respectively. The as-synthesized adsorbent has excellent recyclability, and its adsorption performance can be maintained after 5 cycles of reuse. The self-floating adsorbent has great potential for the removal of dissolved contaminants and cost-effective separation.

Racemic 1-phenylethylamine was resolved by enantiomer selective acetylation using Fe 3 O 4 -chitosan microsphere (CTS)-glutaraldehyde-lipase in a solvent-free system under an alternating magnetic field. Magnetic chitosan microspheres (Fe 3 O 4 -CTS) were prepared via chemical co-precipitation and cross-linked with lipase using glutaraldehyde to form Fe 3 O 4 -CTS-glutaraldehyde-lipase particles. The magnetic, physicochemical, and textural characteristics of Fe 3 O 4 -CTS-glutaraldehyde-lipase particles were assessed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The optimal immobilization conditions were 2.4 mg/mL lipase, 10 mg/mL Fe 3 O 4 -CTS-glutaraldehyde, pH 8.5, 35 °C, 3 h. The loading amount of lipase and the specific activity got to 132 mg/g carrier and 48 U/g. The optimal reaction conditions of the acylation reaction using Fe 3 O 4 -CTS-glutaraldehyde-lipase were 300 mmol/L 1-phenylethylamine, 150 mg immobilized lipase, 2 mL vinyl acetate, 12.6 ×g rotating speed, 40 °C, 8 h. The activity of the Fe 3 O 4 -CTS-glutaraldehyde-lipase particles and conversion were improved when they were exposed to an external alternating magnetic field. The optimum magnetic field was 12 Gs (500 Hz). The conversion, enantiomeric excess of ( R )- N -(1-phenylethyl)acetamide, and E value reached 41.8%, 98.4%, and 264, respectively. Fe 3 O 4 -CTS-glutaraldehyde-lipase could be reused seven times. A kinetic model of the immobilized lipase-catalyzed resolution of 1-phenylethylamine was set up based on the ping-pong bi-bi mechanism. The kinetic constants were V max =1.62×10 −2 mM/min, K A =2.84×10 −4 mM, and K B =5.8×10 −1 mM. The model data fit well with the experimental data.

In this work, 3D flower-like MoS 2 microspheres with nanosheets were synthesized by a simple thiourea-assisted hydrothermal route and employed to support gold nanoparticles in order to fabricate a novel nitrite sensor. By this method, stable and well-distributed gold nanoparticles were formed due to the electrostatic attraction between APTES-functionalized MoS 2 and citric-stabilized gold nanoparticles. Electrochemical investigations indicated that Au NPs/MoS 2 nanocomposites exhibited an excellent performance towards nitrite oxidation . Under the optimal experimental condition (pH 6.0), the sensor displayed a wide linear range from 5.0 μM to 27.8 mM with a high sensitivity of 117.0 μAmM −1 cm −2 and a low detection limit of 1.67 μM. In a word, the present study demonstrates that the Au NPs/MoS 2 composites are promising electroactive materials for developing nitrite sensors with great potential.

Bi plasmon-enhanced mesoporous Bi 2 MoO 6 /Ti 3+ self-doped TiO 2 microsphere heterojunctions (Bi-BMO/TiO 2-x ) have been synthesized by a mild hydrothermal method combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction process, and subsequently annealed at 400 °C in N 2 atmosphere. The prepared Bi-BMO/TiO 2-x photocatalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results reveal that Ti 3+ self-doped TiO 2 is loaded on surface of mesoporous Bi 2 MoO 6 microsphere efficiently and metallic Bi is produced for surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Under visible-light irradiation, the heterojunctions photocatalyst shows excellent photodegradation and photoelectrochemical properties of ∼95% for phenol removal rate and 20 μA/cm 2 for photocurrent density, respectively, which is several times higher than that of single component. Moreover, it also has high photocatalytic oxygen production with a rate of 134 μmol h -1 g -1 . The enhanced photocatalytic activities are mainly attributed to the existence of Ti 3+ self-doping and heterojunction structure, which narrow the band gap to extend photoresponse to visible light region. Another reason is the influence of SPR of metallic Bi. They all promote the spatial separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers.

A modification approach is developed based on the idea of molecular imprinting technique to enhance the selective gas sensing performance of nanostructured SnO2 as gas sensors. The modification procedure, conducted on SnO2 microspheres as the porous substrate, involves in situ polymerization and calcination processes. A methanol-templated molecularly imprinted sample (cM-SnO2 MIP) was successfully synthesized via the modification procedure, which demonstrated great difference with its nonmodified counterpart (c-SnO2 MSs) in terms of both surface morphology and internal architecture. Gas sensing performance, including target gas response, selectivity, and dynamic sensing behavior, was investigated to validate the effectiveness of the imprinted cavities for methanol within cM-SnO2 MIPs. Compared to c-SnO2 MSs, the cM-SnO2 MIPs exhibited greatly enhanced methanol sensing selectivity and improved anti-interference ability by up to 2–10 times depending on the types of interference gases. Moreover, the predesigned target gas recognition capability of the molecularly imprinted sensors was proved by changing the template to ethanol and thus obtaining cE-SnO2 MIPs with excellent ethanol sensing selectivity as well as improved anti-interference ability. By constructing a sensor array, the excellent sensing selectivity of these nanostructured SnO2 microspheres was exploited to distinguish the chemically similar molecules, methanol and ethanol.

In this paper, a monolayer SiO2microsphere (MS) array was self-assembled on a silicon substrate, and monolayer dense silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different particle sizes were transferred onto the single-layer SiO2MS array using a liquid–liquid interface method. A double monolayer “Ag@SiO2” with high sensitivity and high uniformity was prepared as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The electromagnetic distribution on the Ag@SiO2substrate was analyzed using the Lumerical FDTD (finite difference time domain) Solutions software and the corresponding theoretical enhancement factors were calculated. The experimental results show that a Ag@SiO2sample with a AgNPs diameter of 30 nm has the maximal electric field value at the AgNPs gap. The limit of detection (LOD) is 10−16mol/L for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) analytes and the analytical enhancement factor (AEF) can reach ~2.3 × 1013. Our sample also shows high uniformity, with the calculated relative standard deviation (RSD) of ~5.78%.Keywords:Raman scattering;SiO2microsphere array;Ag nanoparticles

Microporous organic networks (MONs) are promising in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with large specific surface area, good hydrophobicity and stability. However, their superhydrophobic structures restrict MONs-based HPLC only in reversed-phase mode. To decrease the hydrophobicity of pristine MONs and to expand their broad application in HPLC, here we described the monomer-mediated fabrication of core-shell MON-2COOH@SiO 2 microspheres for reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC)/hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) mixed-mode chromatography for the first time. The –COOH groups were introduced into MONs’ skeleton to improve their hydrophilicity and to provide hydrophilic interaction sites. The MON-2COOH was grafted onto silica via a monomer mediated method to produce monodispersed core-shell microspheres. By adjusting the concentration of reactants, the thickness of MON-2COOH shell was easily manipulated. The packed MON-2COOH@SiO 2 column showed high resolution and selectivity for separating both hydrophobic (alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons , anilines and phenols) and hydrophilic (nucleoside and nucleic bases) probes, highlighting the promise of MONs in mixed-mode HPLC. The MON-2COOH@SiO 2 column also achieved good separation to sulfonamides, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, flavonoids and phenylurea herbicides , and offered better resolution than commercial C18 and pristine SiO 2 column. Multiple retention mechanisms were also found on MON-2COOH@SiO 2 packed column, underlining the great potential of MONs in mixed-mode HPLC.
