Exploring electrocatalysts with satisfactory activity and durability has remained a long-lasting target for electrolyzing water, which is particularly significant for sustainable hydrogen fuel production. Here, we report a quaternary B/P-codoped transition metal Co-Mo hybrid as an efficient alternative catalyst for overall water splitting. The Co-Mo-B-P/CF dual nanowafers were deposited on a copper foam by double-pulse electrodeposition, which is favorable for achieving a nanocrystalline structure. The Co-Mo-B-P/CF catalyst shows a high catalytic activity along with good long-term stability in 1.0 M KOH solutions for both the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, requiring 48 and 275 mV to reach 10 mA cm–2, respectively. The synergetic effect between Co-Mo and doped B and P elements is mainly attributed to the excellent bifunctional catalysis performance, while the dual-nanowafer structure endows Co-Mo-B-P with numerous catalytical active sites enhancing the utilization efficiency of atoms. Moreover, the catalytic capability of Co-Mo-B-P/CF as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for the overall water splitting is proved, with the current density of 10 mA cm–2 accomplished at 1.59 V. After the stability test for overall water splitting at 1.59 V for 24 h, the activity almost remains unchanged. The features of excellent electrocatalytic activity, simple preparation, and inexpensive raw materials for Co-Mo-B-P/CF as a bifunctional catalyst hold great potentials for overall water splitting.

The effective separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite is a challenging job. In this work, an environmental-friendly reagent pectin was investigated as a novel molybdenite depressant in the flotation separation of Cu-Mo sulfides. The micro-flotation results indicated that pectin selectively depressed molybdenite, and satisfactory separation results were achieved using sodium butyl xanthate (SBX) as collector even in the presence of kerosene. The addition sequence of pectin and kerosene influenced the depression of molybdenite significantly but hardly affected the flotation of chalcopyrite. The pre-adsorption of kerosene prior to pectin on molybdenite surface slightly attenuated the depression effect, while the pre-adsorption of pectin before kerosene moderately diminished the depression effect. Zeta potential , contact angle and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) suggested that pectin was adsorbed on molybdenite and chalcopyrite surface mainly through hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic attraction, respectively. SBX replaced the adsorbed pectin from chalcopyrite surface and restored its hydrophobicity . However, SBX hardly adsorbed on pectin treated molybdenite and molybdenite surface maintained hydrophilic.

Rechargeable Li-O 2 batteries have captured increasing attention owing to their ultra-high theoretical specific energy. However, this promising system is confronted with the large overpotential, limited discharge capacity and low cyclic life. Herein, three two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum-based compounds of MoN, MoO 3 and MoS 2 are used as cathode catalysts in Li-O 2 batteries . The catalytic performance and electronic structures of these catalysts are compared comprehensively. Electrochemical test results reveal the superior battery performance of MoN cathodes, which deliver the highest specific discharge capacity of approximately 7400 mAh g − 1 and the lowest discharge/charge overpotential of 0.19/0.72 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the metallic property of MoN whereas MoO 3 and MoS 2 are poor conductive. Besides, interface properties between MoN and Li 2 O 2 products as well as reaction pathways of the Li-O 2 battery with MoN cathode are also investigated detailedly by DFT calculations, explaining the excellent catalytic properties of MoN at the atomic level. The present work provides intrinsic insights into designing high-performance cathode catalysts for Li-O 2 batteries with fine-tuned morphology and electronic characteristics.

Activating the inert basal planes of layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is critical to deliver its high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency. Herein, oxygen-incorparated MoS x with abundant undercoordinated Mo atoms is fabricated by a facile solvothermal procedure, which realizes synergistically structural and electronic regulations of MoS 2 inert basal planes . Experiment results reveal that oxygen incoparation can effectively modulate the electronic structure and further optimize the intrinsic conductivity, while the defect-rich structure with abundant undercoordinated Mo atoms increases the number of active sites. Moreover, the influence of solvothermal temperature on activity of MoS 2-x is also investigated. The achieved MoS x electrocatalyst prepared at 220 °C exhibits a superior activity for HER with a low overpotential of 191 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 67 mV dec −1 , and an excellent stability due to the largest surface area and superior conductivity.

The interaction of reductive metal ions and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is necessary for the generation of sulfate radials (SO 4 − ), however, this process is greatly restrained by the sluggish reduction of high-valent metal ions. Here we report that commercially available reductive metal (Mo or W) powders are capable of unlocking this kinetic constraint. The reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), decomposition of PMS, and degradation/mineralization of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) are all accelerated in the Mo/Fe 2+ /PMS process at a very low Fe 2+ /PMS ratio (Fe 2+ /PMS = 1/10). In such an accelerated system, common adverse effects of natural water constituents such as chloride and humic acid are largely mitigated. According to the fluorescence measurement and scavenging tests, sulfate and hydroxyl radicals dominate in Mo/Fe 2+ /PMS process. The addition of Mo or W is further confirmed to favor Cu 2+ /PMS process, but this is not the case for other metal ions (Mn 2+ , Ni 2+ , Ce 3+ and Co 2+ ). Reductive zero-valence and four-valence active sites (Mo 0 and Mo 4+ ; W 0 and W 4+ ) play key roles in overall redox reaction. Overall, our present work provides an alternative route for expediting redox cycling of transition metals in advanced oxidation processes, without useless consumption of PMS and increase of total organic carbon.

UO 2 /Mo composite pellets with enhanced thermal conductivity have been considered for the novel construction of high-safety fuel systems. UO 2 /Mo core-shell composite pellets with a reasonable porosity of 4–5% were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). In the SPS UO 2 /Mo composite, the majority of pores remained homogeneous in the UO 2 matrix, while it had a dense morphology in the continuous Mo channel for the heat conduction . The sintering behaviour of the UO 2 /Mo composite indicated that the incorporating Mo impeded densification of UO 2 , and the primary densification temperature ranged from 903 K to 1270 K. To introduce 2 vol% Mo to UO 2 , the thermal conductivity (TC) was enhanced to 4.02 W/m·K at 1073 K. The above result represented a 23.31% improvement over the value of 3.26 W/m·K (Fink) for a pure UO 2 pellet, which was approximated by the revised Hasselman-Johnson model. In particular, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was reduced to 10.0 × 10 −6 /K from 298 K to 1673 K, representing an 8.83% reduction from the value of 10.98 × 10 −6 /K (Martin) for a pure UO 2 pellet. The reduction effect on the CTE was superior to that of other UO 2 matrix composites fuel systems and, hence, offers an external safety aspect for reactors at the elevated temperatures close to accident conditions. These results provide a feasible method for the fabrication of a UO 2 /Mo core-shell pellet as an accident tolerant fuel.

The inherent limitations of conventional metallic glass (MG) catalysts in adapting to complex water environments over a wide pH range stem from their monotonic active site, which is incapable of simultaneously fulfilling multiple functional purposes. Herein, we overcome the narrow range of pH adaptability of existing advanced oxidation catalysts by designing a series of quinary FeCoNiMoB medium-entropy alloys in amorphous structure (referred to as A-MEAs). In particular, the slight modulation of Mo to obtain Fe 25 Co 25 Ni 25 Mo 0.5 B 24.5 A-MEA with highest Gibbs free energy achieves a complete degradation of pollutants both at acidic and alkaline conditions in 10 min. This performance surpasses that of most traditional MGs and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) constrained by the composition limits for entropy maximization. Further insights reveal that in both cases, the multi-site synergistic effects of Mo-driven fast electron transfer of M (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) as active sites and surface-mediated reaction cycles of M 2 + /M 3+ contribute to the accelerated transformation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from peroxydisulfate (PDS) and the remarkable catalytic performance of A-MEAs. The radical evolution demonstrates that SO 4 ·‾ plays a major role under acidic conditions while O 2 ·‾ dominates the catalytic reactions under alkaline conditions. Accordingly, this work aims to fill the gap of A-MEAs for catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants and provide the design strategy of novel MEA catalysts.

The development of efficient and low-cost overall water splitting electrocatalysts for an anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer is desirable for hydrogen production. The control of geometric and electronic structures of electrocatalysts can improve the catalytic efficiency of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and durability in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Spatially confined growth and heteroatom doping can achieve this prospect of the target electrocatalysts. Herein, we prepared a carbon-shell confined Mo-doped CoP electrocatalyst (Mo-CoP@C) via an anion adsorption coupled pyrolytic phosphorization method. A Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) of Co was used to achieve Mo doping and carbon-shell encapsulation. Mo doping significantly altered the electronic structure of CoP, which produced a local polarized environment for water dissociation during alkali HER process. Meanwhile, carbon-shell confined growth and provided a protective layer for durable OER process. Consequently, Mo-CoP@C exhibits attractive alkali electrocatalytic HER and OER activities with the overpotentials of 122 and 280 mV at 0.01 A cm −2 . Finally, the assembled Mo-CoP@C-CP‖Mo-CoP@C-TFF AEM electrolyzer could operate for 500 h at 0.1 A cm −2 .

Until now, there have been many reports on the regulation of inorganic metal ions on the catalytic activity of nanozymes, but few reports on the regulation of anions (such as NO 2 − ) on enzyme activity. In this work, a copper-molybdenum doped carbon dots (Cu, Mo-CDs) with peroxidase-like (POD) activity was synthesized by simple one-step microwave digestion method. The Cu, Mo-CDs + NO 2 − system can promote 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidizing to blue oxidative product (oxTMB) due to the formation of ∙NO 2 free radical. While Hg 2+ was introduced into the system, the POD-like activity of Cu, Mo-CDs + NO 2 − system was inhibited due to the strong interaction and the electron transfer between Cu, Mo-CDs and Hg 2+ . The formation of ∙NO 2 and the electron transfer capability of Cu, Mo-CDs + Hg 2+ were confirmed through ESR spectra and FMN experiments. The bioenzyme-free colorimetric assay based on Cu, Mo-CDs nanozyme is used for detection of NO 2 − and Hg 2+ , showing lower detection limit (LOD) of 1.63 µg/L for NO 2 − , 0.13 µg/L for Hg 2+ , respectively and good recovery from 90.79 to 108.90%. The work paves a new way to design a nanozyme-based colorimetric protocol for traces NO 2 − and Hg 2+ residues in food analysis.

A novel electrochemical immunosensor for determination of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in human serum was fabricated by depositing Mo–Mn 3 O 4 /MWCNTs/Chits nanocomposite onto an indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode. Mo-doped Mn 3 O 4 (MMO) was synthesized by sol–gel method and the presence of molybdenum improved its electrochemical properties. The MMO/MWCNTs/Chits nanocomposite could accelerate the electron transfer rate and enlarge the surface area to capture a large number of Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA). The factors influencing the performance of the immunosensor were investigated, such as incubation time, incubation temperature and pH. Under optimal conditions, the electrochemical immunosensor could detect CEA in a linear range from 0.1 ng ⋅ mL − 1 to 125 ng ⋅ mL − 1 with a detection limit of 4.9 pg ⋅ mL − 1 ( S ∕ N = 3 ). In addition, it exhibited high sensitivity and acceptable stability on a promising immobilization platform for signal amplification, which could be extended to other labeled recognition systems. This electrochemical immunosensor may provide potential applications for the clinical diagnosis.

A novel molybdenum modified PbO 2 electrode was successfully prepared with the method of electrodeposition . The SEM and XRD were employed to study the surface morphology of electrodes, which indicated that the modified PbO 2 electrode had a larger effective area and more compact film. Electrochemical degradation of cinnamic acid (CA) in aqueous solution with Mo–PbO 2 electrode and PbO 2 electrode were investigated. The results showed that the Mo–PbO 2 electrode had a better effect of CA removal. The operational parameters influencing the electrochemical degradation of CA with Mo–PbO 2 electrode were optimized and the results revealed that the electrochemical degradation of CA followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics and the optimal removal of CA and COD were 85.51% and 25.79% after 120 min on condition of the electrolyte concentration, initial concentration of CA, current density and initial value of pH were 0.1 mol/L, 300 mg/L, 10 mA/cm 2 and 3.4, respectively. The degradation mechanism of CA in electrochemical oxidation with Mo–PbO 2 electrode was analyzed and the main degradation pathway of CA was proposed based on the intermediates identified by IC and GC–MS.

CoMo 6 heteropolyacids were modified by cationic surfactants with different alkyl chain lengths to obtain oil-soluble Co–Mo complexes, which were subsequently employed to synthesize highly dispersed hydrodesulfurization catalysts. The surfactants, as structure-directing agents, markedly affected the morphology, specific surface area, and sulfurization degree of the Co-Mo sulfides at the sulfurization stage, resulting in more accessible edge active sites and Brønsted acid sites. Among the various Co-Mo sulfides, the one derived from dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB)-modified CoMo 6 heteropolyacid (DTA-CoMo-S) exhibited the highest hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction rate (1.1×10 −5 mol/(g cat ·s)) for 4,6-dimethylbenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) at 330 °C and an initial H 2 pressure of 7.0 MPa. DFT confirmed that H 2 S adsorption and S-O exchange were more likely to occur on the surface of DTA-CoMo 6 during at the sulfurization stage, which was conducive to the sulfurization of the precursor and generated more CoMoS active phases and SO 4 2- groups. These species promoted both the HDS of 4,6-DMDBT and low-temperature cracking reactions of the intermediate products. In addition, the oil-soluble DTA-CoMo 6 complex showed better hydrocracking, HDS and hydrodemetallization performance in the hydrotreatment of vacuum residue.
