NIR-response amorphous FeOOH anchored BiO2-x for chlorophenols photodegradation via molecular oxygen activation

Shengnan Huang,Fengxi Chen,Deyu Zhu,Jun Li,Yunling Liu,Rong Chen

Chlorophenols (CPs) are universal and toxic pollutants in nature, as they have been widely detected in surface water, groundwater, sediment, ambient air, soil, and the human body. In this work, novel FeOOH/BiO 2-x binary heterostructure composites with UV-Vis-NIR full-spectrum response were successfully constructed by anchoring highly dispersed amorphous FeOOH on BiO 2-x nanosheets. A series characterization indicated the binary components were successfully obtained. The FeOOH/BiO 2-x photocatalysts exhibited highly enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of chlorophenols under UV-Vis-NIR full-spectrum irradiation. The amorphous FeOOH could effectively broaden the light response range, modulate the energy band structure and promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-holes pairs, thus boosting the activation of molecular oxygen to generate •O 2 – . Furthermore, FeOOH/BiO 2-x maintained excellent photocatalytic performance upon real solar light of varied irradiance for consecutive 7 days, indicative of great potential towards phenolic pollutants degradation in water. The redox couples of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Bi (3+x)+ /Bi 3+ also accelerate the efficient generation of reactive oxygen species over FeOOH/BiO 2-x with improved durability. This work not only contributes to the design of full-spectrum responsive photocatalysts, but also provides a rational strategy for molecular oxygen activation towards the elimination of emerging contaminants.

NIR Responsive Doxorubicin-Loaded Hollow Copper Ferrite @ Polydopamine for Synergistic Chemodynamic/Photothermal/Chemo-Therapy

Xiao Chu,Liufang Zhang,Yiling Li,Yue He,Yu Zhang,Chang Du

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most serious bone malignancy, and the survival rate has not significantly improved in the past 40 years. Thus, it is urgent to develop a new strategy for OS treatment. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) as a novel therapeutic method can destroy cancer cells by converting endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH). However, the therapeutic efficacy of CDT is severely limited by the low catalytic efficiency and overexpressed glutathione (GSH). Herein, an excellent nanocatalytic platform is constructed via a simple solvothermal method using F127 as a soft template to form the hollow copper ferrite (HCF) nanoparticle, followed by the coating of polydopamine on the surface and the loading of doxorubicin (DOX). The Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ released from HCF@polydopamine (HCFP) can deplete GSH through the redox reactions, and then trigger the H 2 O 2 to generate ·OH by Fenton/Fenton-like reaction, resulting in enhanced CDT efficacy. Impressively, the photothermal effect of HCFP can further enhance the efficiency of CDT and accelerate the release of DOX. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments reveal that the synergistic chemodynamic/photothermal/chemo-therapy exhibits a significantly enhanced anti-OS effect. This work provides a promising strategy for OS treatment.

NIR-Activated Thermosensitive Liposome–Gold Nanorod Hybrids for Enhanced Drug Delivery and Stimulus Sensitivity

Yi Zhang,Siyuan Hao,Jingjie Zuo,Huiling Guo,Mingxing Liu,Hongda Zhu,Hongmei Sun

Combinatorial photothermal therapy and chemotherapy is an extremely promising tumor therapeutic modality. However, such systems still remain challenges in stimulus sensitivity, avoiding drug leakage, and therapeutic safety. To solve these problems, we engineered actively loaded doxorubicin (DOX) and gold nanorod (GNR) liposomes through embedding stiff hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) in the liposomal water cavity (HMLGDB) to resist the influence of shear force of GNRs to prevent drug leakage. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, the ambient temperature was raised greatly because of the photothermal conversion of GNRs, thereby rupturing the lipid layer and then triggering the DOX release. The results of in vitro experiments showed that the low concentration of HMLGDB (15 μg/mL) could effectively overcome the MCF-7 cells (human breast cancer cell line) by the increase of DOX concentration intracellularly and the good photothermal effect of GNRs. After intravenous injection, HMLGDB exhibited intratumor aggregation and PTT capacity. Furthermore, the combined chemo–photothermal antitumor strategy demonstrated a high inhibition of tumor growth and low damage to normal tissues. The developed hybrids provide a paradigm for efficient combinatorial photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy (CT).

A bioinspired polydopamine–FeS nanocomposite with high antimicrobial efficiency via NIR-mediated Fenton reaction

Na Xu,Qianqian Huang,Li Shi,Jia Wang,Xiangrong Li,Wei Guo,Dong Yan,Tianjun Ni,Zhijun Yang,Yunhui Yan

Ferrous and sulfur ions are essential elements for the human body, which play an active role in maintaining the body's normal physiology. Meanwhile, mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) possesses good hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. In the present work, ferrous sulfide embedded into polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA@FeS NPs) was designed and synthesized via a simple predoping polymerization–coprecipitation strategy and the intelligent PDA matrix successfully prevented the oxidation and agglomeration of FeS nanoparticles. Importantly, there was an obvious synergistic enhancement of the photothermal effect between polydopamine and ferrous sulfide. The PDA@FeS NPs exhibited excellent photothermal antibacterial effects against both E. coli and S. aureus. The near-infrared (NIR) light-mediated release of ferrous ions could reach about 26.5% under weakly acidic conditions, further triggering the Fenton reaction to produce toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The antibacterial mechanism could be attributed to cell membrane damage and cellular content leakage with the synergistic effect of PTT and CDT. This study highlighted the germicidal efficacy of PDA@FeS NPs and provided a new strategy for designing and developing next-generation antibacterial platforms.

In Situ Polymerization of Aniline Derivative in Vivo for NIR-II Phototheranostics of Tumor

Aihui Wang,Hongyan Li,Hao Feng,Huimin Qiu,Rimei Huang,Yiqin Wang,Shichen Ji,Hong Liang,Xing-Can Shen,Bang-Ping Jiang

Natural biopolymers can be controllably in situ synthesized in organisms and play important roles in biological activities. Inspired by this, the manipulation of in situ biosynthesis of functional polymers in vivo will be an important way to obtain materials for meeting biological requirements. Herein, in situ biosynthesis of functional conjugated polymer at the tumor site was achieved via the utilization of specific tumor microenvironment (TME) characteristics for the first time. Specially, a water-soluble aniline dimer derivative (N-(3-sulfopropyl) p-aminodiphenylamine, SPA) was artfully in situ polymerized into polySPA (PSPA) nanoparticles at the tumor site, which was activated via the catalysis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) overexpressed in TME to produce hydroxyl radical (•OH) by coinjected horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Benefiting from outstanding near-infrared (NIR)-II absorption of PSPA, the in situ polymerization process can be validly monitored by photoacoustic (PA) signal at the NIR-II region. Meanwhile, in situ polymerization would induce the size of polymeric materials from small to large, improving the distribution and retention of PSPA at the tumor site. On the combination of NIR-II absorption of PSPA and the size variation induced by polymerization, such polymerization can be applied for tumor-specific NIR-II light mediated PA image and photothermal inhibition of tumors, enhancing the precision and efficacy of tumor phototheranostics. Therefore, the present work opens the way to manipulate TME-activated in situ biosynthesis of functional conjugated polymer at the tumor site for overcoming formidable challenges in tumor theranostics.

NIR-II organic small molecule probe for labeling lymph nodes and guiding tumor imaging

Lin Yuan,Yingbin Su,Runfeng Zhang,Jie Gao,Bing Yu,Hailin Cong,Youqing Shen

Organic small molecule fluorescent groups have injected new material support into the field of medical imaging due to their unique luminescence mechanism and easy tuning of structure. The great potential of NIR-II window imaging forces us to continuously optimize the structure of organic fluorophores to design better fluorescent molecules for fluorescence imaging-guided surgery. An ideal organic small molecule fluorescent group: it can penetrate into the inside of the organism, clearly present the internal structure and the edge contour of different tissues, so as to perfectly achieve internal imaging and accurately guide external surgery. In vivo, fluorescent groups do not damage normal tissues and organs. However, problems such as low quantum yield and poor biocompatibility greatly limit the clinical transformation of NIR-II fluorescent small molecules. To avoid the shortcomings of NIR-II fluorescent probes as much as possible and better realize image-guided surgery, in this experiment, the biplane donor unit was incorporated into the twisted D-π-A-π-D structure to expand the conjugated structure of the fluorescent group, which not only realized NIR-II emission, but also had high quantum yield and biosafety.

Relief of tumor hypoxia using a nanoenzyme amplifies NIR-II photoacoustic-guided photothermal therapy

Qiang Xue,Qiang Xue,Silue Zeng,Silue Zeng,Yaguang Ren,Yingying Pan,Yingying Pan,Jianhai Chen,Ningbo Chen,Ningbo Chen,Kenneth K. Y. Wong,Liang Song,Chihua Fang,Jinhan Guo,Jinfeng Xu,Chengbo Liu,Jie Zeng,Litao Sun,Litao Sun,Hai Zhang,Hai Zhang,Jingqin Chen,Jingqin Chen

Hypoxia is a critical tumor microenvironment (TME) component. It significantly impacts tumor growth and metastasis and is known to be a major obstacle for cancer therapy. Integrating hypoxia modulation with imaging-based monitoring represents a promising strategy that holds the potential for enhancing tumor theranostics. Herein, a kind of nanoenzyme Prussian blue (PB) is synthesized as a metal-organic framework (MOF) to load the second near-infrared (NIR-II) small molecule dye IR1061, which could catalyze hydrogen peroxide to produce oxygen and provide a photothermal conversion element for photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and photothermal therapy (PTT). To enhance stability and biocompatibility, silica was used as a coating for an integrated nanoplatform (SPI). SPI was found to relieve the hypoxic nature of the TME effectively, thus suppressing tumor cell migration and downregulating the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), both of which led to an amplified NIR-II PTT effect in vitro and in vivo, guided by the NIR-II PAI. Furthermore, label-free multi-spectral PAI permitted the real-time evaluation of SPI as a putative tumor treatment. A clinical histological analysis confirmed the amplified treatment effect. Hence, SPI combined with PAI could offer a new approach for tumor diagnosing, treating, and monitoring.

Broadband near-infrared double-perovskite phosphor Sr2ScTaO6:Cr3+, Yb3+ for NIR pc-LED applications

Zhongxiang Shao,Xianju Zhou,Li Li,Yongjie Wang,Faling Ling,Chuan Jing,Xiao Tang,Zhongmin Cao

The broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor converted light emitting diode (NIR pc-LED) has garnered unprecedented attention due to its crucial role in NIR applications. However, there remains a scarcity of efficient broadband NIR luminescence materials capable of emitting NIR light with wavelengths greater than 800 nm. This study reports the synthesis, crystal structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties for double perovskite Sr 2 ScTaO 6 :Cr 3+ phosphors which exhibit a broadband NIR emission in the 650–1250 nm range, peaking at∼815 nm with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 161 nm. The observed broadband emission arises from two distinct Cr 3+ centers, namely Sc 3+ and Ta 5+ octahedral sites within the Sr 2 ScTaO 6 structure, as demonstrated by luminescence and decay kinetic analysis. A significant enhancement of the thermal stability and a remarkable broadening of the FWHM (from 161 to 275 nm) are achieved by employing Yb 3+ co-doping strategy. The efficient energy transfer from Cr 3+ to Yb 3+ was confirmed through emission and excitation spectra, as well as luminescence decay measurements. Finally, Sr 2 ScTaO 6 :Cr 3+ -Yb 3+ phosphor was integrated with a 470 nm blue LED chip to fabricate a NIR pc-LED device, and its potential application in night vision was evaluated.

Sensitive and discriminative detection of cysteine by a Nile red-based NIR fluorescence probe

Lv Junying,Jiao Xiaorui,He Di Demi,Hussain Ejaz,Yang Na,Wang Yongxiang,Zhang Hui,Chen Liping,Jin Xing,Liu Ning,Yu Cong

Cysteine (Cys) is a significant biological mercaptan that achieves key roles in several important physiological processes, such as reversible redox homeostasis in living organisms. Abnormal levels of Cys in the human body are directly related to many diseases. In this work, we constructed a sensitive sensor (Cys-NR) by connecting a Cys recognition group to a Nile red derivative. Due to photo-induced electron transfer (PET), the Cys-NR probe showed little fluorescence at 650 nm. With the addition of Cys to the assay solution, the chlorine unit of the probe was substituted by the thiol group of Cys. Further, the amino and sulfhydryl groups in cysteine underwent an intramolecular rearrangement, which led to the Cys-NR probe water solution turning from colorless to pink with an enhancement in fluorescence. The red fluorescence at 650 nm increased about 20 times. Based on the turn-on signal, a selective Cys detection method is developed. The probe signal is not affected by various potential interferences or other competing biothiols and the limit of detection (LOD) is determined to be 0.44 μM. In addition, the probe is further employed for imaging of Cys in live cells, revealing good biological imaging ability that could provide a new way of intracellular Cys detection. Graphical abstract

NIR-II sensitive Co9S8/S-CDs@PEG nanocomposites with enhanced multi-enzyme mediated phototherapy

Keke Kang,Limin Wang,Yajie Ma,Kai Yu,Jingwei Liu,Fengyu Qu,Huiming Lin

Here, Co 9 S 8 / [email protected] ( [email protected] ) nanocomposites are synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal process. Firstly, sulfur-doped carbon dots (S-CDs) are prepared by using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a precursor. A region with denser –SH group is regarded as nucleation site on S-CDs for the growth of Co 9 S 8 to induce heterostructure. As-synthesized [email protected] possess great harvest in NIR region and hyperthermia (51.5%, 1064 nm) for photothermal (PTT). Besides, hyperthermia can elevate the thermal energy of nanocomposite to assist low-energy NIR-II irradiation (1064 nm, 1.16 eV), realizing the excitation of Co 9 S 8 (1.46 eV) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation for photodynamic therapy (PDT). What's more, [email protected] exhibits GOx-like activity that could consume glucose to elevate H 2 O 2 level and inhibit intracellular energy supply. In addition, they also show mimic peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) characterization, and the tandem multi-nanozye activities endue the enhanced chemotherapy (CDT) and PDT. [email protected] reveals the greater ROS generation and nanozyme activity compared with pure Co 9 S 8 @PEG, attributing to the efficient charge separation in heterostructure. The novel biodegradation of [email protected] makes the elimination via feces and urine within 2 weeks. That is associated with PTT/PDT/CDT/starvation therapy to activate immune response for anticancer.

Enhanced UV–Vis–NIR photocatalytic activity of La doped BaBiO2Cl: Role of oxygen vacancies

Jincai Peng,Yuehong Peng,Tianhui Wang,Zhijie Wu,Qi Wang,Yongjin Li,Zhaoyi Yin,Jin Han,Jianbei Qiu,Zhengwen Yang,Zhiguo Song

In order to make the most of solar energy, the development of efficient UV–Vis–NIR activated photocatalysts has attracted more and more attention. In this study, the UV–Vis–NIR broad spectrum activated photocatalysts La-doped BaBiO 2 Cl with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) were successfully prepared by solid state reaction . The experimental results and theoretical calculations revealed that La doping induced OVs in BaBiO 2 Cl, formed an intermediate level, extended the light absorption to the NIR region, and promoted carrier separation efficiency. Owing to the synergistic promotion effect, the optimal BaBiO 2 Cl–3%La exhibited obviously enhanced photodegradation rate, which was about 3.26 times higher than that of pure BaBiO 2 Cl under UV–Vis–NIR light irradiation . This work provides a resultful strategy for designing new full-spectrum-activated photocatalysts for environmental protection.

Targeted Immunoimaging of Tumor-Associated Macrophages in Orthotopic Glioblastoma by the NIR-IIb Nanoprobes

Hongqin Zhu,Feng Ren,Tingting Wang,Zhilin Jiang,Qiao Sun,Zhen Li

Developing dynamic and highly sensitive methods for imaging M2-type tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) is vital for monitoring the tumor progression and assessing the therapeutic efficacy. Here, the fabrication and application of rationally designed Er-based rare-earth nanoprobes for the targeted imaging of M2-type TAMs in glioblastoma (GBM) through the second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence beyond 1500 nm is reported. The NIR-IIb fluorescence of Er-based rare-earth nanoparticles can be remarkably enhanced by optimizing their core-shell structures and the shell thickness, which allows for in vivo imaging under excitation by a 980 nm laser with the lowest power density (40 mW cm -2 ). These bright Er-based nanoparticles functionalized with M2pep polypeptide show notable targeting ability to M2-type macrophages, which has been well tested in both in vitro and in vivo experiments by their up-conversion (UC) fluorescence (540 nm) and down-shifting (DS) fluorescence (1525 nm), respectively. The targeting capability of these nanoprobes in vivo is also demonstrated by the overlap of immunofluorescence of M2-type TAMs and Arsenazo III staining of rare-earth ions in tumor tissue. It is envisioned that these nanoprobes can serve as a companion diagnostic tool to dynamically assess the progression and prognosis of GBM.
