The existence of considerable energy level differences and defects at interfaces between the CsPbBr 3 film and the carbon electrode, have been critical bottlenecks to restrict the development of the photoelectric conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of all-inorganic CsPbBr 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Therefore, to solve this contradiction, the interface engineering has been applied into the interface of CsPbBr 3 /carbon through many passivators. However, most of the passivators reported previously are composed of organic ingredients, which is inconsistent with the concept of the “real all-inorganic” PSCs. Here, NiO nanocrystals (NiO NCs) with hole transporting behaviors were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method and applied to modify the interface between the CsPbBr 3 film and carbon electrode. After NiO NCs modified, the CsPbBr 3 film with a smoother surface exhibits suppressed interface defects and appropriate interfacial energy band alignment, thereby decreasing the carrier recombination and improving the charge extraction ability. Eventually, by optimizing the concentrations of NiO NCs and the spin-coating cycles of CsBr methanol solution, the NiO NCs-treated device generates a champion efficiency of 9.19% with a short-circuit current (J SC ) of 7.57 mA cm −2 , an open-circuit voltage (V OC ) of 1.57 V and a fill factor (FF) of 77.44%, in comparison with the pristine device with an inferior efficiency of 7.15%, a J SC of 6.92 mA cm −2 , a V OC of 1.48 V and an FF of 69.64%. Furthermore, the NiO NCs modified devices show no significant degradation after 30 days in open-air conditions.

Industrial applications of water splitting to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide reduction to produce high value added products remain significant challenges, owing to the low density of electrons and holes produced by photoexcitation, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and sluggish redox reactions . Direct Z scheme photocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their excellent space–photogenerated electron−hole pairs and stronger redox ability. Herein, the core−shell direct Z scheme construct was established by a structure of NiO/Ni coated CdS spherical, finally achieved photocatalytic pure water splitting, simultaneously produced with stoichiometric ratio 2:1 (include 42.5 μmol g − 1 h − 1 H 2 and 20.1 μmol g − 1 h − 1 O 2 ), AQY (apparent quantum yield) was 1.6% (in pure water system, λ = 420 nm) and STH (Solar to Hydrogen Conversion Efficiency) was 2.1 × 10 −4 %. The yield of CO from photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide was 36.7 μmol g − 1 h − 1 . Insight into the reaction mechanism provides an initial attempt to reveal the direct Z scheme of NiO@CdS and the Schottky junction of NiO/Ni together to promote the photocatalytic performance. This work can provide a strategy scheme for constructing a bifunctional sphere−shell direct Z scheme catalyst and applying it to photocatalytic overall water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction.

Heavy metals, notably Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ , are some of the most persistent contaminants found in groundwater. Frequent monitoring of these metals, which relies on efficient, sensitive, cost-effective, and reliable methods, is a necessity. We present a nanocomposite-based miniaturized electrode for the concurrent measurement of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ by exploiting the electroanalytical technique of square wave voltammetry. We also propose a facile in situ hydrothermal calcination method to directly grow binder-free mesoporous NiO on a three-dimensional nickel foam, which is then electrochemically seeded with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The meticulous design of a low-barrier Ohmic contact between mesoporous NiO and AuNPs facilitates target-mediated nanochannel-confined electron transfer within mesoporous NiO. As a result, the heavy metals Pb 2+ (0.020 mg·L −1 detection limit; 2.0–16.0 mg·L −1 detection range) and Cu 2+ (0.013 mg·L −1 detection limit; 0.4–12.8 mg·L −1 detection range) can be detected simultaneously with high precision. Furthermore, other heavy metal ions and common interfering ions found in groundwater showed negligible impacts on the electrode’s performance, and the recovery rate of groundwater samples varied between 96.3% ± 2.1% and 109.4% ± 0.6%. The compactness, flexible shape, low power consumption, and ability to remotely operate our electrode pave the way for onsite detection of heavy metals in groundwater, thereby demonstrating the potential to revolutionize the field of environmental monitoring.

Supercapacitors with improved specific capacitance , long cycling life, high power density and energy density are fabricated to close the gap between traditional and emerging energy storage. We develop interactive ternary metal oxides nano-ribbon electrodes used to assemble symmetric supercapacitor. The well-aligned vanadium oxide ribbon arrays act as the matrix, growing from nickel oxide/nickel substrate and then being grafted by manganese oxide nanoparticles. These tri-metallic oxides are formed in a cost-effective and green hydrothermal chemistry. The electrodes composed of ribbon arrays retain their crystallographic structure during charging and discharging processes, enabling steadiness at 83.6 % after 10,000 cycles. These as-prepared electrodes demonstrate a specific capacitance of 788 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 . The symmetrical supercapacitors are assembled using triple component electrodes, achieving a high energy density of 138 W h kg −1 at a power density of 450 W kg −1 . These binderless single-cell devices are reported with a simplified design showing 10–20 times higher energy density in comparison with reported results of the V 2 O 5 -MnO 2 system. The nanografting results in reactive interfaces with interpenetrating channels for efficient ion transport and electron conduction. The advances to design nanostructured supercapacitor materials are based on these heterojunction arrays to enhance their supercapacitive performances.

BACKGROUND The reaction integration of butanal self-condensation and successive hydrogenation (that is, one-step synthesis of 2-ethylhexanol from butanal) is an efficiency way to simply process flow and reduce energy consumption for the commercial manufacture of 2-ethylhexanol (2EHO). In the present work, a NiO-MnO 2 /Nb 2 O 5 -TiO 2 catalyst was prepared for the integration reaction to reach a high 2-ethylhexanol selectivity. Furthermore, the reaction integration was investigated kinetically for the next scale-up. RESULTS A 2EHO selectivity of 90.0% was achieved at a complete conversion of butanal with the help of reduction-in-reaction technique in this reaction integration. The reaction rate of butanal is determined by the reversible aldol self-condensation reaction and its direct hydrogenation reaction. The reaction order with respect to butanal in the two reactions is, respectively, 2.004 and 1.004. The activation energy of the hydrogenation reaction is higher than that of the forward reaction of the self-condensation, suggesting the suppressive effect the reaction integration on the direct hydrogenation. CONCLUSION The reaction integration promotes butanal self-condensation and successive hydrogenation and it suppresses butanal direct hydrogenation by using NiO-MnO 2 /Nb 2 O 5 -TiO 2 catalyst with the help of reduction-in-reaction technique, giving rise to a pretty high selectivity of 2-ethylhexanol. The establishment of the integration reaction kinetics will lay the foundation for reactor design and analysis. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

Co-Ni bimetallic oxides were successfully deposited on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets by atomic layer deposition technology and used as pseudocapacitive materials for supercapacitors. The uniform distribution of metal oxide nanoparticles on MXene nanosheets endows the pseudocapacitive materials more active sites and the synergistic effect between CoO x and NiO greatly improves the electrochemical performance. Specifically, as the deposited cycle increased to 90, the sample showed the optimal electrochemical performance with specific capacitance up to 1960 F g −1 (1 A g −1 ), 20.3 times higher by than that of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, excellent rate capability (87.3% capacitance retention, 1–18 A g −1 ) and 90.2% capacitance retention after 8000 cycles.

Recently, hybrid biocatalysts with a unique interfacial structure have attracted significant attention for enzyme mimicking due to their superior catalytic activity compared with the single component catalyst. In this work, novel sheet-on-tube heterostructured polypyrrole (PPy)@CoO/NiO nanotubes (NTs) are synthesized via an in situ growth strategy and are utilized for enzyme mimicking and sensing applications. The as-prepared PPy@CoO/NiO NTs can catalyze H2O2 into ·OH and realize the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation, showing an excellent peroxidase-like property. Thanks to the synergistic effect between PPy NTs and CoO/NiO nanosheets, the catalytic performance of the resultant PPy@CoO/NiO NTs is superior to individual PPy NTs and bare CoO/NiO sheets as well as their physical mixture. In addition, the PPy@CoO/NiO NTs can also catalyze the H2O2 decomposing to generate O2, possessing a catalase-like property. Then, we perform a simple visual method for sensitively detecting H2O2 and ascorbic acid (AA). This work demonstrates a distinctive route to promote the catalytic performance of enzyme-like nanomaterials for huge potentials in biotechnology and environment fields.

Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in glass matrixes exhibit special optical, electrical, or magnetic properties. Despite various approaches of encapsulating NPs in different kinds of glasses to prepare functional composite materials, there still exist challenges in fabricating efficiency and performance for silica glass made by traditional methods, such as sol–gel or melt quenching. Herein, the authors report a facile way to fabricate metal oxide NP-doped silica glass by digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology for the first time. Different from common ion doping in silica glass, metal acetylacetonates that can be thermally decomposed to corresponding metal oxides innocuously, are chosen as a general precursor. Then, the representative nickel(II) acetylacetonate is introduced during the 3D printing process. The subsequent heat treatment generates a homogeneous distribution of NiO NPs in silica glass and it also exhibits optical nonlinear effect. The results provide a facile method for developing functional metal oxide-doped glasses as well as the freeform fabrication of optoelectronic devices based on them.

Strain engineering of two-dimensional (2D) material interfaces represents a powerful strategy for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of water splitting. However, maintaining catalytic stability under various harsh conditions by introducing interface strain remains a great challenge. The catalyst developed and evaluated herein comprised Ir clusters dispersed on 2D NiO nanosheets (NSs) derived from metal organic frameworks (Ir@NiO/C BDC ), which displays a high activity and stability under all pH conditions, and even a change of only 1% in the applied voltage is observed after continuous electrocatalytic operation for over 1800 h under alkaline conditions. Through combined experimental and computational studies, we found that the introduced interfacial strain contributes to the outstanding structural stability of the Ir@NiO/C BDC catalyst, arising from its increased Ir and Ni vacancy formation energies, and hence suppressing its leaching. Moreover, strain also enhances the kinetically sluggish electrocatalytic water splitting reaction by optimizing its electronic structure and coordination environment. This work highlights the effects of strain on catalyst stability and provides new insights for designing widely applicable electrocatalysts.

The exploitation of highly active and durable electrocatalysts that can replace high-cost Pt/C for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is urgently required. The challenge lies in diminishing the usage of noble metals without sacrificing HER activity. In this work, trace Ru-doped transition metal oxides (TMOs) nanoparticles (∼7 nm) with high dispersion loaded by the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were developed. Specifically, Ru-NiO/CNTs with a low Ru content of 0.94 wt% exhibits excellent alkaline HER activity with the low overpotential of 19 mV and 98 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 and 100 mA·cm −2 , respectively, outperforming Ru/CNTs counterpart and most previously Ru-based nanocatalysts. Notably, the mass activity (1.83 A·mg Ru -1 ) and price activity (301.51 A·dollar -1 ) of Ru-NiO/CNTs are separately more than 7 times and 18 times higher than that of the commercial 20% Pt/C benchmark. Moreover, the catalyst can operate without activity decay after 100 h long-term stability test. DFT calculation reveals that the synergy effects are originated from (i) the accelerated adsorption and dissociation of H 2 O by Ru, and (ii) the optimized electronic structure of Ni that tunes the H* adsorption/desorption. Furthermore, we discover that Ru-promoted HER activity shows a metal-dependent relationship (Ni ≈ Cu > Mn > Co > Fe), which can use binding energy shift (ΔE) as a highly correlated descriptor. This work may provide an insightful understanding of Ru dopant for enhanced HER activity.

Due to its high theoretical capacity and plentiful deposits, Si has been extensively explored as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Research on Si-based materials is currently concentrated on problems like enhancing the volume effect (by around 300%) and the electrical conductivity of Si. As a result, using the electrostatic spinning method, Si@NiO@Carbon Nanofibers (CNFs) anodes with dual modifications were created in this research. A more stable and substantial specific capacity for lithium-ion batteries is achieved due to the unique structure's amelioration of the agglomeration phenomena, volume expansion effect, and low conductivity of Si nanoparticles . At a high current density of 3 A/g, it has an excellent reversible specific capacity, and after 1000 cycles in a lithium-ion battery, it still has a specific capacity of 861.77 mAh/g. Exhibits favorable rate performance at various current densities. In addition, after 1000 cycles, the surface of the Si@NiO@CNFs electrode is smooth, the structure is undamaged, and the cross-sectional thickness expands by approximately 23.19%. As a high-performance energy storage material , Si-based anode material with twofold modification has many potential applications. By designing the structure of the Si cladding layer , this study offers a novel, efficient, and practicable solution for the rapid capacity decline of Si materials.

It is still a big challenge to design self-protected energetic films or coatings due to the performance degradation under wet conditions, even underwater using environmentally friendly techniques. Thus, this paper firstly proposed an environment-protecting method to fabricate a superhydrophobic nano-Al/NiO energetic film with uniformly distributed structures and high purity via an improved electrophoretic assembly and stearic acid modification. The nano-Al/NiO energetic film with a high contact angle (CA) of 166° displayed superior anti-wettability and self-cleaning ability, and the outstanding exothermic performance of product keeps almost stable even after 10 complete immersion cycles, demonstrating the promising practicality. Our design provide a novel strategy for substantially extending safety, flexibility and adaptability of functional energetic surfaces in real industrial applications.
