Polymer coating post-treatment strategy of the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes offers a versatile and feasible opportunity to restrict the intrinsic flexibility of ZIF framework and improve their gas separation performance. Herein, two different coating methods (Vacuum-assisted drip coating (VADC) and Static drip coating (SDC)) are utilized to prepare PDMS/ZIF-8 composite membranes based on ZIF-8 membranes with different compactness (high, medium and low-quality membrane) for investigating the effect of the contact area between PDMS layer and ZIF-8 membrane on C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation performance of PDMS/ZIF-8 composite membranes. The results reveal that the increase of the contact between PDMS layer and ZIF-8 membrane can enhance the contact confinement effect on the flexibility of ZIF-8 framework, resulting in a higher improvement of the separation performance for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 of PDMS/ZIF-8 composite membranes with pressure. The prepared composite membrane based on VADC method showed a significant improvement in C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation factor (77–102) with slight increase in C 3 H 6 permeance (about 10%) at feed pressure of 7 bar. Moreover, this facile vacuum-assisted drip strategy attenuated the impact of the quality of ZIF-8 membranes on fabrication reproducibility of the composite membranes, which can withstand high pressure. Therefore, this work advances ZIF-8 membrane moving forward to industrial C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation.

Flexible membranes with excellent waterproofness and breathability have been strongly desired in wound dressing applications with the aim of providing both protection and comfort. Despite the advances in protective clothing using waterproof breathable materials, the construction of waterproof breathable membranes suited for wound dressing still faces huge challenges to eliminate the toxic solvent residue-related harm to health and improve the waterproof, breathable, and stretchable performance. In the current work, we developed a facile and versatile approach based on one-step electrospinning and an ethanol solvent system for producing skinlike waterproof and breathable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) embedded polyvinyl butyral (PVB) fibrous membranes. Benefiting from the addition of hydrophobic agent PDMS, a reduced maximum pore size and enhanced surface hydrophobicity were achieved, contributing to a maximum hydrostatic pressure of 54.32 kPa, which was about 4.0 times that of the PVB fibrous membrane. In addition, the obtained PVB/PDMS fibrous membranes exhibited a remarkable water vapor transmission rate of 8.98 kg m–2 day–1, and enhanced mechanical strength of 4.95 MPa. The developed fibrous membranes provided human skinlike functions, including blocking liquid water penetration inside, permitting water vapor transmission outside, and allowing for sufficient stretching at joint positions. Taken together, this work could contribute to a better design of health-friendly, waterproof, breathable, and stretchable wound dressing materials.

Undesired ice accumulation on surfaces leads to serious threats to both transportation systems and human life. Although superhydrophobic coatings have demonstrated attractive performance for icephobic applications, their use has been restricted due to their weak mechanical properties and complex preparation processes. In the present study, a facile and efficient strategy for the development of a novel super-repellent icephobic coating was demonstrated. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and cross-linked poly[hexeafluorobisphenol A-co-cyclotriphosphazene] microspheres (PHC) were prepared by a single-step precipitation polymerization without further surface modifications. The facilely fabricated coating demonstrated a high static water contact angle of ∼164° and a low sliding angle of ∼3.7°. More importantly, the coating exhibited exceptional mechanical durability against various damages, due to the synergistic effects of the micro/nanoscale surface structure and the strong and stable interaction between the PHC particles and PDMS. More remarkably, the coating showed good self-cleaning and anti-icing properties in a clammy environment (−15 ℃, relative humidity = 70%). This study offers insights into the preparation of a mechanically robust and cost-effective coating for various practical anti-icing applications.

Although versatile piezoresistive pressure sensors show a great potential as human motion detection and wearable smart devices, it is still an issue to widen their working range and enhance their sensitivity. Herein, hollow-structured MXene-polydimethylsiloxane composites (MPCs) are fabricated by utilizing nickel foam as the three-dimensional substrate for dip-coating of MXene sheets followed by infiltrating of polydimethylsiloxane and etching of the nickel foam substrate. The resultant MPC performs a wide working range with bending angles of 0° to 180°, an excellent long-term reliability up to 1000 cycles under the bending angles of 15°, 30° and 150°, and a stable durability with a bending angle of 30° in a frequency range from 0.05 to 2 Hz as a bendable piezoresistive pressure sensor, which is attributed to the formation of dense conduction paths due to the interconnection of MXene sheets during the deformation of MPC. The sensor also exhibits an extremely low detection limit of 10 mg for pressure detection. Interestingly, the slippage of adjacent MXene sheets is beneficial for monitoring slight vibration of equipments and detecting subtle human motions. Thus, the MPC sensor could be applied for stereo sound and ultrasonic vibration monitoring , swallowing, facial muscle movement, and various intense motion detections, demonstrating its great potential as wearable smart devices.

By means of chemical combination between the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer and Polyethersulfone (PES) layer, a kind of PDMS/PES composite membrane was prepared for separation of the light hydrocarbon components from the drilling mud. Meanwhile, its separation performance of the light-hydrocarbon components from the drilling mud was investigated and evaluated quantitatively. Results showed that the prepared PDMS/PES composite membrane had good mechanical performance, and it was resistant to corrosion of the water-based drilling mud. The PDMS/PES composite membrane can work stably at 5 MPa and 393 K. The responding time of the membrane to sudden change of the hydrocarbon gas content was less than one minute. For either single phase flow or gas-liquid two-phase flow, a high flow rate was recommended to avoid non-ideal flow patterns and to increase mass transfer in the feed channel of the membrane cell . Results in this work could be helpful for further application of the membrane technology in geological mud logging.

The diffusion process is the rate-limiting step for n -butanol recovery from diluted aqueous solution, which can be improved by incorporating hydrophobic nanoparticle into the polymer matrix. However, the micropore structure of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) in the commonly applied ZIF-8-based mixed matrix membrane (MMM) could hardly meet the diffusion demand of the penetrant molecules. Herein, ZIF-8-derived nanoporous carbon (ZNC) with larger pore diameter and pore volume was prepared to replace ZIF-8 in conventional MMM in order to improve the diffusion process. An increase of 68.7% in n -butanol permeability of ZNC/PDMS MMM with 3 wt% of particle loading was obtained compared with ZIF-8/PDMS MMM. Coupled with the good compatibility between ZNC and PDMS , ZNC was homogeneously dispersed in PDMS matrix. As a result, a n -butanol permeability of 109,583 Barrer and a n -butanol/water selectivity of 4.47 were obtained for n -butanol recovery from 1.5 wt% n -butanol/water solution at 55 °C, which were increased by 145.4% and 17.6%, respectively, compared with the pure PDMS membrane. Overall, the ZNC-filled PDMS membrane shows promising in effective separation of n -butanol in realistic applications.

Mixed matrix composite membranes (MMCMs) have shown advantages in reducing VOCs and CO 2 emissions. Suitable composite layer, substrate, and good compatibility between the filler and the matrix in the composite layer are critical issues in designing MMCMs. This work develops a high-performance UiO-66-NA@PDMS/MCE for VOCs adsorption and CO 2 permea-selectivity, based on a simple and facile fabrication of composite layer using amidation-reaction approach on the substrate. The composite layer shows a continuous morphological appearance without interface voids. This outstanding compatibility interaction between UiO-66-NH 2 and PDMS is confirmed by molecular simulations. The Si─O functional group and UiO-66-NH 2 in the layer leads to improved VOCs adsorption via active sites, skeleton interaction, electrostatic interaction, and van der Waals force. The layer and ─CONH─ also facilitate CO 2 transport. The MMCMs show strong four VOCs adsorption and high CO 2 permeance of 276.5 GPU with a selectivity of 36.2. The existence of VOCs in UiO-66-NA@PDMS/MCE increases the polarity and fine-tunes the pore size of UiO-66-NH 2 , improving the affinity towards CO 2 and thus promoting the permea-selectivity for CO 2 , which is further verified by GCMC and EMD methods. This work is expected to offer a facile composite layer manufacturing method for MMCMs with high VOC adsorption and CO 2 permea-selectivity.

Magnetic actuators, which use magnetic effects for actuation, are very useful in many areas, such as electrical equipment, soft robots, and medical instruments. However, they inevitably suffer damage during long-term use, leading to mechanical failure. Introduction of the self-healing concept can solve this problem to a certain extent and extend their service life. Herein, a room-temperature self-healing magnetic nanocomposite is obtained using a simple, efficient, and environmental-friendly strategy. In the authors' design, soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) polymeric materials are chosen as the matrix, and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are utilized as a functional magnetic nanofiller to obtain a new magnetic nanocomposite. By balancing the self-healing property and mechanical performance, the optimal content of magnetic filler is determined to be 15 wt%. The optimized sample exhibits an ultimate tensile strength (0.44 MPa), a high tensile strain (400%), and an excellent self-healing efficiency (62.2% mechanical recovery of fracture strength) at 25 °C for 30 min. Furthermore, this composite material shows an excellent and healable magnetic actuation performance. This new nanocomposite provides great potential for the magnetic actuation application.

Phytic acid, which is a naturally occurring component that is widely found in many plants, can strongly bond toxic mineral elements in the human body, because of its six phosphate groups. Some of the metal ions present the property of bonding with phytic acid to form insoluble coordination complexes aggregations, even at room temperature. Herein, a superhydrophobic cotton fabric was prepared using a novel and facile nature-inspired strategy that introduced phytic acid metal complex aggregations to generate rough hierarchical structures on a fabric surface, followed by PDMS modification. This superhydrophobic surface can be constructed not only on cotton fabric, but also on filter paper, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric, and sponge. AgI, FeIII, CeIII, ZrIV, and SnIV are very commendatory ions in our study. Taking phytic acid–FeIII-based superhydrophobic fabric as an example, it showed excellent resistance to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, high temperature, and organic solvent immersion, and it has good resistance to mechanical wear and abrasion. The superhydrophobic/superoleophilic fabric was successfully used to separate oil/water mixtures with separation efficiencies as high as 99.5%. We envision that these superantiwetting fabrics, modified with phytic acid–metal complexes and PDMS, are environmentally friendly, low cost, sustainable, and easy to scale up, and thereby exhibit great potentials in practical applications.

Currently, separation of ester/alcohol azeotropes such as methyl methacrylate (MMA)/methanol is a typical energy-intensive process using distillation technology. In principle, pervaporation membrane technology can separate azeotropes with higher energy efficiency, while the membrane performance could not meet the application requirement. We reported a new type of MOF ligand side group regulated UiO-66/PDMS mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) to selectively separate MMA from the its methanol azeotrope. The incorporation of UiO-66 fillers improved the MMA/methanol performance of PDMS membrane. The results of molecular simulation and characterizations revealed that compared with the pristine UiO-66 and UiO-66-CH 3 , amino groups of UiO-66-NH 2 showed stronger interaction energy and thus higher affinity towards MMA molecule. Therefore, although the pore size of UiO-66-NH 2 is larger than the molecular kinetic diameters of MMA and methanol, the tunable chemical environment and molecular interaction promoted the selective transport of MMA. The optimal UiO-66-NH 2 /PDMS MMM displayed an outstanding separation performance with a total flux of 2.07 kg m −2 h −1 and a separation factor of 5.7 for 18 wt% MMA/methanol azeotrope at 40 °C. The membrane exhibited an excellent long-term performance during continuous separation process of ∼3400 h, and showed potential in scale-up fabrication and separation of other ester/alcohol azeotropes. The proposed MOF ligand side group regulation offers a promising strategy to develop high-performance membranes for azeotropic separation.

This study reports the development of ethanol-selective composite membranes for pervaporation (PV) based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) embedded with reduced graphene oxide@silica core-shell (GSCS) particles. To enhance interfacial compatibility and particle dispersion within the matrix, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FDTS) was immobilized onto the GSCS to entangle with PDMS chains. A pre-polymerization strategy was adopted to increase the viscosity of the casting suspension, facilitating higher filler loading and improved ethanol separation performance. Optimal separation performance was achieved with a casting solution viscosity of 4 Pa s, yielding a maximum selectivity of 3.94. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed the formation of smooth defect-free PDMS/FDTS-GSCS composite membranes. The PV testing of these membranes demonstrated a high separation factor of 11.03 and a permeation flux of 242 g m −2 h −1 for separating a 10 wt% ethanol/water mixture at 40°C. Critically, the composite membranes exhibited excellent operational stability over a continuous 168-h test period. These findings indicate that incorporating FDTS-modified GSCS into PDMS significantly enhances ethanol selectivity, highlighting the potential of these membranes for bioethanol recovery applications.

According to the relationship between unit size and wavelength, electromagnetic waves (EMWs) in metacomposites can be effectively absorbed through inherent loss mechanisms. However, limited loss ability has emerged as a primary obstacle to achieving efficient EMW absorption (EMWA) performance. The challenge of enhancing the attenuation of corresponding metacomposites remains important. In this study, we prepared elaborate titanium nitride/reduced graphene oxide units with controllable conductivities and sizes, which formed the microwave antireflective surface of metacomposites. This configuration contributes to improved impedance matching and reduced temperature sensitivity concerning EMWA performance. More importantly, EMWs experience repeated collisions and loss, along with multiple reflections and scattering within metacomposites. This phenomenon extends the transmission pathways of EMWs, thereby increasing additional loss capacity. Consequently, these metacomposites exhibited exceptional EMWA performance across a broad temperature range (298 to 573 K), while maintaining a low filler content of 1.0 wt% units. Henceforth, our findings not only provide an advantageous pathway for high design flexibility in EMWA but also pave the way for new research directions and possibilities regarding advanced lightweight metacomposites that optimize EMWA over an extensive temperature range.
