In the aim to realize high performance semitransparent fully coated organic solar cells, printable electrode buffer layers and top electrodes are two important key technologies. An ideal ink for the preparation of the electrode buffer layer for printed top electrodes should have good wettability and negligible solvent corrosion to the underlying layer. This work reports a novel organic–inorganic composite of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) and PEDOT:PSS that features excellent wettability with the active layer and printed top Ag nanowires and high resistibility to solvent corrosion. This composite buffer layer can be easily deposited on a polymer surface to form a smooth, homogeneous film via spin-coating or doctor-blade coating. Through the use of this composite anode buffer layer, fully coated semitransparent devices with doctor-blade-coated functional layers and spray-coated Ag nanowire top electrodes showed the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.01% with an excellent average visible-light transmittance (AVT) of 50.3%, demonstrating superior overall characteristics with a comparable performance to and a much higher AVT than cells based on a thermally evaporated MoO3/Ag/MoO3 thin film electrode (with a PCE of 5.77% and AVT of 19.5%). The current work reports the fabrication of fully coated inverted organic solar cells by combining doctor-blade coating and spray coating and, more importantly, demonstrates that a nanocomposite of a polyoxometalate and conjugated polymer could be an excellent anode buffer layer for the fully coated polymer solar cells with favorable interfacial contact, hole extraction efficiency, and high comparability with full printing.

Paper, a low-cost and eco-friendly substrate, can be used to prepare flexible electronic devices by resorting to surface modification technology. In this study, we investigated the surface modification of paper substrates, including those that were uncoated or coated with traditional mineral coatings , to analyze the enhancements to surface flatness and water resistance using a UV curing varnish layer. Furthermore, we explored the formation of perovskite films on the surface-modified paper substrates utilizing a PEO-doped perovskite precursor solution in ambient air, and the surface morphology , crystallinity , photoluminescence properties, and absorption properties of the prepared perovskite films were discussed accordingly. Considering the nontransparent feature of paper-based substrates, the inverted perovskite light-emitting device was finally assembled by transfer printing a transparent PEDOT:PSS layer as a top electrode. The conductive and optical properties of the electrode layer were thus analyzed as well. It is found that the surface modification of paper substrates via printing the UV curing varnish can illustrate significant improvements, such as pore-filling on the surface, a more than 10-fold reduction in roughness, and downward penetration. Moreover, prepared perovskite films on the surface-modified coated paper exhibit superior enhancements, including photoluminescence, higher crystallinity, and surface roughness and porosity. Devices fabricated on the surface-modified substrates are less susceptible to short-circuiting. The electroluminescence on the surface-modified coated paper substrate is 2.16 times higher than the prepared device on the surface-modified base paper substrate and even 3.23 times higher than on the PET substrate. Therefore, it is quite feasible to fabricate a perovskite light-emitting device on the modified surface of a paper substrate by using a printed UV curing varnish layer, which is expected to be a promising coating to polish the paper surface in the preparation of electroluminescent devices.

The development of pressure sensors with enhanced sensitivity, expanded working range, and versatile yet decoupling detection capabilities is critical for advancing robotics and medical applications. This work presents a novel pressure sensor design utilizing the distinct responses of dual-sized microspheres to external pressure that achieves a high sensitivity of 20 kPa–1 and an expanded pressure range of 0.1–70 kPa, enabling continuous and precise pressure detection. Functional material coatings further enhance the performance of the sensor, demonstrated here with a PEDOT:PSS layer for temperature sensing with a sensitivity of 4 × 10–5 K–1, while effectively decoupling temperature and pressure signals. The resulting bimodal sensor features a rapid pressure response (200 ms), low hysteresis, and exceptional durability, maintaining reliable performance over 3000 cycles. With its simple fabrication process and robust sensing capabilities, the sensor is validated through diverse applications, including gesture recognition, tactile perception in soft robotics, and handwriting detection using sensor arrays. This sensor design with dual-sized microspheres demonstrates significant potential for next-generation electronic skin, perceptive robotics, and intelligent wearable electronics, offering a versatile and practical approach to multifunctional sensing.

Flexible optoelectronic devices have attracted enormous attention as an essential component in next-generation wearable devices. To meet the trend of biocompatibility, flexibility and low cost, paper-based optoelectronic devices have become compelling candidates. Moreover, 2D organic–inorganic metal halide perovskites have been extensively studied for the application in flexible optoelectronic devices owing to their long-term moisture stability, optoelectronic tunability, and multiple quantum well (MQW) structures. Herein, the paper-based flexible optoelectronic devices are designed by spin-coating PEDOT:PSS and (iso-BA) 2 MA n -1 Pb n I 3 n +1 ( n ≥ 1) on regular filter paper with responsivity of 2.62 mA W −1 and response time (τ rise /τ decay ) of 0.81/0.18 s at 35% relative humidity (RH). Furthermore, the responsivity may be increased by 250% within the humidity range from 35% to 90%, and remains above 92% of the initial value after measured for 1800 s at 60% RH. This work can pave the way for further studies about the humidity effect on perovskites for next-generation green wearable electronics.

The accelerated iteration of electronic products has triggered an unprecedented e-waste crisis, posing serious environmental challenges to conventional material disposal strategies. In response to this dilemma, there is a pressing need for sustainable electronic materials that combine desired performance with environmental recyclability. Here, a glycerol-plasticized, PEDOT-crystallized, and closed-loop recyclable cellulose-based conductive film is developed for sustainable electronics. Carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CCNTs) are embedded into a TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) matrix to form a primary conductive framework, further reinforced by poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) bridging. A subsequent glycerol treatment imparts dual effects—plasticizing the cellulose network for enhanced flexibility and inducing PEDOT crystallization for improved charge transport. The resulting film exhibits balanced flexibility, stable conductivity, recyclability, and reliable performance in real-time electromyography (EMG) sensing. This work offers a promising strategy for next-generation skin-interfaced bioelectronics, addressing the urgent need for circular materials in the era of electronic overproduction.

Supercapacitors, renowned for their long lifespan, high power density, and rapid charge/discharge capabilities, are essential for next-generation energy storage systems. Fiber-based fabric supercapacitors present a promising solution for wearable and portable applications due to their flexibility and integrability. However, the introduction of fillers or bridging agents in fiber electrodes, along with their inherently limited dimensions, often compromises electrical conductivity and specific surface area, resulting in reduced energy density. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of the lotus stem, a biomimetic fiber electrode featuring 1) a PEDOT:PSS protective outer cortex, 2) MXene-based conductive phloem fibers, and 3) an interconnected CNT network mimicking the xylem's 3D transport architecture is fabricated. This biomimetic microstructure design significantly enhances fiber conductivity (2741.7 S cm −1 ) and specific surface area, while improving electrode surface electrochemical activity. The optimized fiber electrode achieves outstanding performance: a volumetric specific capacitance of 417.8 F cm − 3 , an energy density of 15.3 mWh cm − 3 , and 89.8% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles. The fabricated fiber-based fabric supercapacitor exhibits a wide operating potential window of 3.2 V, demonstrating practical viability by powering an LED for 15 min and sustaining a spreadsheet display for over 45 min. This study proposes a bioinspired strategy for controlling the 3D intertwined fiber structure, significantly enhancing electrode energy density and extending supercapacitor operation time. This approach addresses the critical challenge of low energy density in smart textiles, advancing the development of practical wearable electronics.

Electronically conductive hydrogels integrated with dielectric elastomers show great promise in a wide range of applications, such as biomedical devices, soft robotics, and stretchable electronics. However, one big conundrum that impedes the functionality and performance of hydrogel–elastomer-based devices lies in the strict demands of device integration and the requirements for devices with satisfactory mechanical and electrical properties. Herein, the digital light processing three-dimensional (3D) printing method is used to fabricate 3D functional devices that bridge submillimeter-scale device resolution to centimeter-scale object size and simultaneously realize complex hybrid structures with strong adhesion interfaces and desired functionalities. The interconnected poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) network endows the PAAm hydrogel with high conductivity and superior electrical stability and poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) functions as an insulating medium. The strong interfacial bonding between the hydrogel and elastomer is achieved by incomplete photopolymerization that ensures the stability of the hybrid structure. Lastly, applications of stretchable electronics illustrated as 3D-printed electroluminescent devices and 3D-printed capacitive sensors are conceptually demonstrated. This strategy will open up avenues to fabricate conductive hydrogel–elastomer hybrids in next-generation multifunctional stretchable electronics.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) can provide multiplexed information about muscle performance. If current sEMG electrodes are stretchable, arrayed, and able to be used multiple times, they would offer adequate high-quality data for continuous monitoring. The lack of these properties delays the widespread use of sEMG in clinics and in everyday life. Here, we address these constraints by design of an adhesive dry electrode using tannic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, and PEDOT:PSS (TPP). The TPP electrode offers superior stretchability (~200%) and adhesiveness (0.58 N/cm) compared to current electrodes, ensuring stable and long-term contact with the skin for recording (>20 dB; >5 days). In addition, we developed a metal-polymer electrode array patch (MEAP) comprising liquid metal (LM) circuits and TPP electrodes. The MEAP demonstrated better conformability than commercial arrays, resulting in higher signal-to-noise ratio and more stable recordings during muscle movements. Manufactured using scalable screen-printing, these MEAPs feature a completely stretchable material and array architecture, enabling real-time monitoring of muscle stress, fatigue, and tendon displacement. Their potential to reduce muscle and tendon injuries and enhance performance in daily exercise and professional sports holds great promise.

In this work, ultrahigh-performance single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/Se nanowire (NW)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) ternary thermoelectric (TE) nanocomposite films are successfully designed by rational design of CNT/Se/PEDOT:PSS ternary nanocomposites. The addition of CNTs apparently improves the electrical conductivity of composite films, resulting in a relatively huge growth of the power factor. The PEDOT:PSS interface layers uniformly attach on both sides of the Se NWs and CNTs effectively, forming a tightly interleaving and interconnected three-dimensional network. As a consequence, a maximum power factor of 863.83 μW/(m·K2) has been achieved for the sample containing 26 wt % CNTs at 434 K. Ultimately, a flexible TE generator prototype consisting of 5-unit freestanding composite film strips is fabricated using the optimized composite films, which can generate a maximum output power of 206.8 nW at a temperature gradient of 44.7 K. Therefore, the present work has a further potential to be used for the flexible polymer/carbon TE nanocomposite films and devices.

The emerging SiP 2 with large capacity and suitable plateau is proposed to be the alternative anode for Li-ion batteries. However, typical SiP 2 still suffers from serious volume expansion and structural destruction, resulting in much Li-consumption and capacity fading. Herein, a novel stretchable and conductive Li-PAA@PEDOT:PSS binder is rationally designed to improve the cyclability and reversibility of SiP 2 . Interestingly, such Li-PAA@PEDOT:PSS hydrogel enables a better accommodation of volume expansion than PVDF binder (e.g. 5.94% vs. 68.73% of expansivity). More specially, the SiP 2 electrode with Li-PAA@PEDOT:PSS binder is surprisingly found to enable unexpected structural recombination and self-healing Li-storage processes, endowing itself with a high initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) up to 93.8%, much higher than PVDF binder (ICE = 70.7%) as well. Such unusual phenomena are investigated in detail for Li-PAA@PEDOT:PSS, and the possible mechanism shows that its Li-PAA component enables to prevent the pulverization of SiP 2 nanoparticles while the PEDOT:PSS greatly bridges fast electronic connection for the whole electrode. Consequently, after being further composited with carbon matrix, the SiP 2 /C with Li-PAA@PEDOT:PSS hydrogel exhibits high reversibility (ICE> 93%), superior cyclability (>450 cycles), and rate capability (1520 mAh/g at 2000 mA/g) for LIBs. This highly stretchable and conductive binder design can be easily extended to other alloying materials toward advanced energy storage.

Global data traffic growth poses unprecedented challenges to information security. This necessitates robust next-generation solutions, particularly multidimensional protection frameworks that integrate spatial, temporal, and multispectral modulation capabilities. To address this, inspired by structure-function coupling mechanisms in biological neurons and synapses, this study develops a novel biomimetic artificial synaptic device based on electrochromic materials. The device integrates PEDOT:PSS (enabling millisecond-level response) and WO 3 ·H 2 O (providing stable memory) with an optimized Mg 2+ gel electrolyte. Key performance metrics include 82.9% optical modulation at 700 nm, precisely controlled multi-state transitions, and real-time synaptic visualization. It mimics biological learning/forgetting via paired-pulse facilitation (PPF: 152–168%) and physiological timescale dynamics (τ 1 = 2.91 s, τ 2 = 6.97 s). Notably, these neuromorphic properties are translated into an innovative spatiotemporal dual-encryption logic: spatially, pixelated color-depth modulation generates geometric Morse code patterns (dot/dash = light blue/deep blue pixels); temporally, programmable optical attenuation below the 5% visual perception threshold produces time-locked, self-erasing encryption keys. This approach constructs a synergistic space/time/pulse-field encryption system, fundamentally breakthrough traditional encryption frameworks. It provides an innovative physical-layer information protection solution and expands electrochromic materials’ technological boundaries in dynamic information concealment and visual security.

Efficient training of spiking neural networks (SNNs) in flexible neuromorphic hardware remains a major challenge due to the non-differentiable nature of spiking activations and the limited availability of trainable, energy-efficient device platforms. Here, a tunable textile-based vertical organic electrochemical transistor (TT-vOECT) enables implementation of surrogate gradients computation for backpropagation in SNNs. Using a solvent interdiffusion solidification spinning strategy, Plateau–Rayleigh instabilities are overcome to fabricate coaxial trilayer fibers with well-defined heterojunctions between PEDOT:PSS and BBL. The resulting TT-vOECT exhibits nonlinear transfer characteristics that closely approximate the Sigmoid derivative. A conditionally activated backpropagation (CAB) mechanism is further proposed, in which synaptic updates are gated by both surrogate gradient magnitude and input spike, is implemented using reconfigurable logic arrays based on dual TT-vOECTs. This framework enables sparse, event-driven weight updates with reduced computational overhead. Integrated into a convolutional SNN, the device-driven CAB strategy achieves high-accuracy classification of electroencephalogram signals for multiclass neurological disorder diagnosis, comparable to software baselines, while reducing computational redundancy by ≈20%. The results establish a scalable and flexible organic hardware platform for trainable neuromorphic systems with biologically inspired learning dynamics.
