Cost-effective synthesis of MIL-101(Cr) from recyclable wastes and composite with polyaniline as an ion-to-electron transducer for potentiometric Pb2+ sensing

Basem E. Keshta,Haojie Yu,Li Wang,Md Alim Uddin,Heba G. El-Attar,Amr E. Keshta,Ali H. Gemeay,Fathy Hassan,Sherif M. Eid

Fabricating an ion-to-electron transducer (IET) from waste in the solid contact screen-printed ion-selective electrodes (SC-SP-ISEs) technique is challenging because its properties determine the potential stability and reproducibility of the designed sensors. Herein, we fabricated an IET substrate from recyclable wastes, and we applied it as an IET layer in an ISE-based sensor for fast and on-site detection of lead ions (Pb 2+ ) in an environmental sample. First, MIL-101(Cr) was prepared based on a combination of PET and Cr +6 waste recycling (R-MIL-101(Cr)). Polyaniline (PANI) was polymerized over R-MIL-101(Cr) to prepare a conductive PANI@R-MIL-101(Cr) composite. Then, it was applied as an IET substrate in the construction of pb 2+ -ISE for the detection of Pb 2+ ions in sediment samples collected from Lake Idku, Egypt. Three Pb 2+ sensors were fabricated and abbreviated as sensors I, II, and III corresponded to PANI, R-MIL-101(Cr), and PANI@R-MIL-101(Cr) as IET substrates, respectively. The performance of the sensors was studied to be applied for fast and selective detection of Pb 2+ at low concentration levels. Among the fabricated sensors, PANI@R-MIL-101(Cr) shows fast response (5 sec), low detection limit (1 × 10 −7 mol/L), and long lifetime reaches 70 days with a potential drift of 0.9 mV h −1 . The electrochemical characteristics prove the fast ion-to-electron transportation in the case of PANI@R-MIL-101(Cr) owing to its lower impedance and high capacitance. In-situ polymerization of PANI significantly enhanced the conductivity of the PANI@R-MIL-101(Cr) composite. The hydrophobic nature of PANI@R-MIL-101(Cr) ensures high stability by preventing the formation of water layers at the electrode/membrane interface. These results show the great potential of the IET-based PANI@R-MIL-101(Cr) layer for Pb2 + sensing in environmental samples with low detection limits and high stability for the future development of SC-ISEs.

Self-templated formation and characterization of polyhedral CoS hollow nanocage (HNC) for heavy metal ions (Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+) removal in aqueous solutions

Wei Tian,Yaqin Rong,Dali Li,Jin Tian,Naiming Lin,Zhongde Wang

The contamination of water by heavy metal ions can easily cause serious environmental problems and damage to the human body hands down. Using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a sacrificial template, polyhedral CoS hollow nanocages (HNC) were successfully synthesized by self-template approach as adsorbents for heavy metal ions removal. The CoS HNCs suggested good chemical stability and extremely efficient heavy metal ions removal of Ag + , Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ , which can be ranked in the order of Ni 2+ ≪ Zn 2+ , Cd 2+  < Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Ag + . The saturation adsorption for Ag + reached 2147.944 mg g −1 and exhibited high distribution coefficients (K d ) > 107 mL g −1 . The CoS HNCs can rapidly reduce the Ag  +  concentration from ppm level to trace level of 1 ppb. It has been proved that the rapid and selective adsorption was achieved via the hierarchical pore structure of the CoS HNCs can better disperse these metal vacancies with super affinity and the S 2− , reduce the mass transfer distance and accelerate mass transfer. It is expected that such a CoS HNCs could be a promising alternative to conventional materials for the adsorption of heavy metal ions.

A novel electrochemical sensor of DNAzyme/AuNPs/Fe/ZIF-8/GCE for Pb2+ detection in the soil solution with enhanced sensitivity, anti-interference and stability

Peipei Song,Zhirui Fan,Shuai Sun,Chengye Sun,Jun Wang

In recent years, lead (Pb) contaminated soil has caused irreversible damage to human beings. It is urgent to develop a novel technology for accurate detection of Pb in the soil solution. Herein, a new electrochemical sensor was fabricated. Fe/ZIF-8 was used as the modification material, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were electrodeposited, and DNAzyme was applied on the surface as the probe. Under the optimum conditions (DNAzyme concentration of 1 μmol, fixation time of 4 min, incubation time of 17 h and reaction time of 30 min), the detection range was 5×10 −12 ∼ 5×10 −5 M, and the minimum detection limit was 10 −13 M (3δ). Furthermore, the electrochemical sensor demonstrated outstanding anti-interference ability to common cations, anions, organic compounds and other interference factors. After four consecutive tests, the relative standard deviation (RSD) was only 0.39%, and it still displayed excellent reproducibility with 0.69% of RSD. After 20 days, the sensor’s response to Pb 2+ remained at 93.58%. In addition, the sensor could accurately detect Pb 2+ in the actual soil solutions, and the recoveries of the samples ranged from 92% to 109.4%. In conclusion, this electrochemical sensor can specifically detect Pb 2+ in the soil solution with enhanced sensitivity, anti-interference capability and stability, which is of great significance for Pb 2+ detection in the field.

A triple amplification strategy using GR-5 DNAzyme as a signal medium for ultrasensitive detection of trace Pb2+ based on CRISPR/Cas12a empowered electrochemical biosensor

Yuanyuan Yue,Songtao Wang,Qiang Jin,Nan An,Lina Wu,He Huang

Lead ions (Pb 2+ ) are a well-known toxic heavy metal that poses a significant threat to human health. Therefore, the development of a simple and ultrasensitive technique for detecting Pb 2+ is essential. With their trans -cleavage properties, the newly discovered CRISPR-V effectors have become a potential high-precision biometric tool. In this regard, a CRISPR/Cas12a-based electrochemical biosensor (E-CRISPR) has been developed, which is combined with the GR-5 DNAzyme that can specifically recognize Pb 2+ . In this strategy, the GR-5 DNAzyme acts as a signal-mediated intermediary, which can convert Pb 2+ into nucleic acid signals, thereby becoming single-stranded DNA that triggers strand displacement amplification (SDA) reaction. This is coupled with following activated CRISPR/Cas12a cleavage of the electrochemical signal probe, enabling cooperative signal amplification for ultrasensitive Pb 2+ detection. The proposed method has a detection limit as low as 0.02 pM. Therefore, we have developed an E-CRISPR detection platform with GR-5 DNAzyme as a signal medium (called SM-E-CRISPR biosensor). This provides a method for the CRISPR system to specifically detect non-nucleic substances by converting the signal using a medium.

Mercaptopropionic acid-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots and Pb2+ as sensing system for rapid and sensitive room-temperature phosphorescence detection of sulfide in water

Tingting Gan,Nanjing Zhao,Gaofang Yin,Jianguo Liu,Wenqing Liu

As a kind of serious concern environmental toxic pollutants, sulfide is widely used in various industrial processes, and generated from the process of biological metabolism. However, the sensitive, rapid and effective detection of sulfide still remains challenge. In this paper, a simple and rapid room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) method for the detection of sulfide with a high selectivity and sensitivity was proposed by using mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and Pb 2+ as a sensing system. Highly water-soluble MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs with phosphorescence emission property were successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method. We discovered that the as-prepared QDs displayed effectively phosphorescence quenching to Pb 2+ in pH 11.5 borax-NaOH buffer solution, then demonstrated remarkable phosphorescence recovery after the addition of sulfide to the QDs-Pb 2+ system. Therefore, based on the phosphorescence "off-on" behavior of MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs, a simple, sensitive and selective phosphorescence method for rapid detection of sulfide was successfully developed. The quenching and recovery of the phosphorescence of MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs have been studied in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the recovered degree of RTP intensity had a very good linear relationship with sulfide concentration in the range of 2 × 10 −7 –80 × 10 −7  mol L −1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9982, and a lower detection limit of 6.89 × 10 −8  mol L −1 . The relative standard deviations for eleven times repeated detections of 5 × 10 −6 and 8 × 10 −6  mol L −1 sulfide were 3.24% and 4.50%, respectively. The proposed method could effectively avoid the interferences of common anions, fluorescence substances and scattering light. Furthermore, it was successfully applied to detect sulfide in real water samples with satisfactory results, and the recoveries were in the range from 94.2% to 107.1%. This work will provide the basis of method for the development of fast and on-line monitoring sensors of small molecule pollutions in water.

Insights into the simultaneous removal of Cr6+ and Pb2+ by a novel sewage sludge-derived biochar immobilized nanoscale zero valent iron: Coexistence effect and mechanism

Zeng-Hui Diao,Jian-Jun Du,Dan Jiang,Ling-Jun Kong,Wen-Yi Huo,Cui-Mei Liu,Qi-Hang Wu,Xiang-Rong Xu

Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ are both highly toxic pollutants and commonly co-exist in some industrial effluents and contaminated waters . In this study, simultaneous removal of Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ by a novel sewage sludge-derived biochar immobilized nanoscale zero-valent iron (SSB-nZVI) was systematically investigated. It was well demonstrated that a porous structure was successfully formed on the SSB-nZVI when the starch was used as an additive. A synergistic effect on the adsorption and reduction over the SSB-nZVI was achieved, resulting in nearly 90 and 82% of Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ removal within 30 min, respectively. Cr 6+ was reduced prior to Pb 2+ . A low pH could accelerate the corrosion of nZVI as well as phosphate leaching. When Malachite green was added as a coexisting organic pollutant, its effective removal was found due to the formation of a Fenton-like system. The SSB-nZVI could be run consecutively three times with a relatively satisfactory performance. Most of Cr 6+ was converted into Cr 2 O 3 and Cr(OH) 3 on the SSB-nZVI surface, whereas most of Pb 2+ species existed as Pb(OH) 2 (or PbO). A possible reaction mechanism on the SSB-nZVI involved the adsorption, reduction and precipitation of both Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ over the particles. Present study sheds light on the insight of the fate and transport of Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ in aquatic environment, as well provides helpful guide for the remediation of coexistence of pollutants in real applications.

Solidification/stabilization of Pb2+ and Zn2+ in the sludge incineration residue-based magnesium potassium phosphate cement: Physical and chemical mechanisms and competition between coexisting ions

Xing Cao,Weibing Wang,Rui Ma,Shichang Sun,Junhao Lin

In order to exhaustively investigate the physical and chemical mechanisms of heavy metal immobilization in sludge incineration residue (SIR)-based magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC), this work investigated the influence of Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ on the compressive strength and microstructure of SIR-based MKPC, and the efficiency of Pb and Zn immobilization. Taking the difference of Ksp (solubility product) of different heavy metal compounds as the entry point, the physical and chemical mechanisms of Pb and Zn immobilization, and the competitive mechanism between coexisting ions, were comprehensively analyzed. It was discovered that Pb 2+ is in the form Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , and Zn 2+ is immobilized in the form Zn 2 (OH)PO 4 [Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 is preferentially formed, when the pH > 7, Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 is converted to Zn 2 (OH)PO 4 ]. The low solubility of heavy metal phosphates is the main reason that Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ are well immobilized. The preferential formation of Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (K sp  = 8 × 10 −43 ) and Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (K sp  = 9.0 × 10 −33 ) reduced the amount of MgKPO 4 ·6H 2 O (K sp  = 2.4 × 10 −11 ), resulting in a decrease in compressive strength. Besides, coexisting Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ has a competitive effect: Pb 2+ will weaken the immobilization efficiency of Zn 2+ . The new exploration of these mechanisms provide a theoretical basis for rationally adjusting the Magnesia/Phosphate ratio to enhance the compressive strength and improve the efficiency of heavy metals immobilization.

Treatment of heavy metal ions-polluted water into drinkable water: Capture and recovery of Pb2+ by cellulose@CaCO3 bio-composite filter via spatial confinement effect

He-Xiang Zhao,Yan Wang,Jun-Jie Yang,Ji-Guo Zhang,Yuan-Ru Guo,Shujun Li,Qing-Jiang Pan

A bio-composite of cellulose@CaCO 3 (Cel@CaCO 3 ) has been prepared via a facile precipitation reaction route, in anticipation of solving the toxic lead ion pollution problem and satisfying the sustainable development. The microstructures along with the morphology were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and TEM. It is found that CaCO 3 forms the hydrogen bonding with cellulose in the composite, which makes it cover on the cellulose fibers. This would construct a suitable micro-environment for the Pb 2+ capture and removal due to the spatial confinement effect. The high performance has been achieved with the up-taken capacity of 602.3 mg·g −1 . When treating the wastewater with the Pb 2+ concentration less than 50 mg·g −1 , almost 100 % removal rate was obtained only within 10 min. The Pb 2+ ions were trapped on the surface of cellulose and appeared as the form of PbCO 3 . Consequently, the complete separation and recovery would be accomplishable without the secondary pollution, for the spent bio-composite filter was removed easily and conveniently. Notably, the treated water met the drinkable criterion. The roles of cellulose and removal mechanism have also been explained in details.

Fluorogenic detection of Hg2+, Cd2+, Fe2+, Pb2+ cations in aqueous media by means of an acrylamide-acrylic acid copolymer chemosensor with pendant rhodamine-based dyes

Geng Tong-Mou,Wu Da-Yu,Huang Wei,Huang Rong-Yi,Wu Gen-Hua

A monomer 1-acrolyl-2-rhodamine 6G hydrazide (AR6GH) was synthesized by the heterogeneous reaction of acryloyl chloride with rhodamine 6G hydrazide (R6GH) and characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR and elememtal analyses. Then it was micellar copolymerized with acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA) to obtain a water-soluble fluorescent copolymers (poly(AM-AA-AR6GH)) which were characterized by the method of FTIR and 1 H NMR. The viscosity average molecular weight M η – of poly(AM-AA) and poly(AM-AA-AR6GH)s were 1.76 × 10 6 , 8.58 × 10 4 and 7.68 × 10 4  g/mol, respectively. The fluorescent characteristic of the aqueous solutions of copolymers was investigated both in varied pH and in the presence of metal cations. The poly(AM-AA-AR6GH) was found to be a selective chemosensor for Hg 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 2+ , Pb 2+ ions. Obvious fluorescence enhancement was due to the photophysical response of the copolymer to the presence of Hg 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 2+ , or Pb 2+ ions. In addition, the ability of the copolymer to detect different metal cations (Ag + , Ba 2+ , Co 2+ , Cd 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ , K + , Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , Na + , Ni 2+ , Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ ) in aqueous solution was studied. The results suggest that copolymer may offer potential application for sensors of Hg 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 2+ , or Pb 2+ ions in aqueous solution.

Coupling monoclinic Pb2(CrO4)O with Mn3O4 quantum dots as oxygen vacancies-rich S-scheme photocatalysts for visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction with H2O

Xiaoyan Feng,Qiong Wu,Li Li,Ping Wang,Qiang Wang,Jun Liang

Simulating natural photosynthesis to convert CO 2 and H 2 O into fuels achieving overall reaction is a promising solution for addressing environmental problems and energy crises. Constructing an S-scheme catalyst of two or more catalytic sites with rapid electron transfer and strong redox capability may be an effective strategy for coupling photocatalytic CO 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation. Here, an oxygen vacancies-rich S-scheme semiconductor photocatalyst composed of monoclinic lead chromate oxide (Pb 2 (CrO 4 )O) coupled with Mn 3 O 4 quantum dots (QDs) (Pb 2 (CrO 4 )O@Mn 3 O 4 QDs) are synthesized and tested for photoconversion of CO 2 with H 2 O under visible light. Through the integration of Pb 2 (CrO 4 )O with Mn 3 O 4 QDs, the photocatalytic C1-evolution rate on Pb 2 (CrO 4 )O@Mn 3 O 4 QDs is radically increased by 6.0 and 8.1 times, which is much faster than that of pristine Pb 2 (CrO 4 )O and Mn 3 O 4 . The origin of the greatly raised activity is revealed by advanced characterizations, and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the electron transport pathway in Pb 2 (CrO 4 )O@Mn 3 O 4 QDs with light illumination, unveiling the efficient spatial separation/transfer of charge carriers in oxygen vacancies-rich Pb 2 (CrO 4 )O@Mn 3 O 4 QDs S-scheme heterojunction. Consequently, powerful photoelectrons and holes accumulate in the Mn 3 O 4 conduction band and Pb 2 (CrO 4 )O valence band, respectively, exhibiting prolonged long lifetimes and facilitating their involvement in CO 2 photoreduction and H 2 O photooxidation through altering the interfacial charge dynamics.

Screen-Printed Electrode Modified by Reduced Graphene Oxide-Acidified Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes with In Situ Hg-Bi Film for Direct Pb2+ and Cd2+ Detection in Seawater

Yang Chen,Xuening Wang,Huimin Si,Zhiping Sun,Qianyun Yu,Xihong Song,Ying Liu,Chuanbo Yan,Kai Yu

The increasing heavy metal pollution in marine environments has highlighted the urgent need for rapid, on-site detection methods. In this study, a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs-COOH)-modified screen-printed electrode (SPE) was coupled with a portable electrochemical workstation for on-site detection of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in seawater. The key influencing factors involved in the detection process, such as deposition potential, deposition time, and pH value, have been systematically optimized. The response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to refine the portable electrochemical workstation parameters, including step potential, frequency, and pulse amplitude. The detection capability for heavy metals was significantly enhanced by using square wave stripping voltammetry (SWASV) with in situ Hg-Bi film plating, achieving detection limits of 0.4 μg/L for Pb 2+ and 0.8 μg/L for Cd 2+ . Finally, the portable workstation together with rGO/MWCNTs-COOH/SPE showed recovery rates of 101.33 ± 3.42% ~ 115.85 ± 3.50% for Pb 2+ and 101.32 ± 2.23% ~ 102.00 ± 2.00% for Cd 2+ in real seawater. The results were in good agreement with those obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), thereby validating the detection accuracy of this platform.

Ligand-Free CsPbBr3 Perovskite Quantum Dots in Silica-Aerogel Composites with Enhanced Stability for w-LED and Display by Substituting Pb2+ with Pr3+ or Gd3+ Ions

Chong Zhao,Yingkui Li,Wanggui Ye,Xiaofei Shen,Zicheng Wen,Xuanyi Yuan,Yongge Cao,Chaoyang Ma

Colloidal all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) feature with tunable high-efficiency photoluminescence from blue to red for optoelectronic applications but suffer from instability under water moisture, UV light illumination, high-temperature shock, as well as oxygen erosion. Previous work to improve LHP NCs stability was mainly focused on either glass bulk sealed LHP quantum dots (QDs) with low quantum efficiency, or mesoporous silica matrixes confined LHP QDs with organic ligands still existing. Here, a facile, noncolloidal, ligand-free LHP QDs growth with physical confinement is proposed by integrating the growth of perovskite QDs with the fabrication process of hydrophobic silica-aerogel powders (SAPs). As a result, the as-synthesized mono- and mixed-cesium-lead-halide QDs @ SAPs composites show tunable photoluminescence from purple to deep red. Besides, the Pr 3+ ions doped CsPbBr 3 QDs @ SAPs composites exhibit moderate quantum efficiency, excellent stability under UV illumination, water moisture as well as temperature variation. Furthermore, performances of white LED device encapsulated Pr 3+ doped composite with blue GaN chip and commercial red (Sr, Ca)AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ phosphor are evaluated. This work demonstrates a facile and general strategy for synthesizing high-stable all-inorganic cesium-lead-halide QDs for applications in white LED and display devices.
