Symmetric Catalytic Pt-MnO2@Carbon Microspheres as Micromotors for Dynamic Pollutant Remediation

Lijuan Liu,Jiachen Yan,Chan Zheng,Rong Xiao,Pingqiang Dai,Qianting Wang,Wei Li,Wenzhe Chen

Organic pollutants in water pose a serious risk to public health, hence, it is essential to develop new and innovative approaches to the remediation of contaminated water. This work demonstrates a highly effective bubble-propelled micromotor based on the surface coating of symmetrical carbon microspheres (CMSs) with catalytic manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanoflakes and platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) (Pt-MnO 2 @CMS). This concept represents a simple and flexible strategy for the decomposition of organic pollutants in water and could be used to construct a wide range of diverse micromotors with applications in drug delivery, sensing, energy generation and environmental remediation. The unique hierarchical structure of the MnO 2 nanoflakes and the uniform dispersion of Pt NPs in this material were confirmed. The resulting micromotors were found to move rapidly as a result of propulsion by oxygen bubbles generated in a H 2 O 2 solution via the catalytic actions of the MnO 2 nanoflakes and Pt NPs. In contrast to the intrinsic asymmetry of tubular and Janus structures, the self-driven motion of these symmetrical micromotors can be attributed to morphological variations and the uneven distribution of the cocatalysts. Combining a porous structure, rapid movement and Fenton-like reactions, these Pt-MnO 2 @CMS micromotors rapidly degraded methylene blue (MB), providing greater than 99% decolorization in just 30 min without the need for external agitation. Analyses of the adsorption mechanism based on pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics models showed that adsorption proceeded via chemical processes. These new micromotors are expected to have important environmental and biomedical applications.

Interface modulation of Pt/Al2O3 catalyst and their roles in thermal stability

Changjin Xu,Yinglei Liu,Baljeet Singh,Shiyuan Yi,Gaowu Qin,Song Li

Interfacial local environment of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and support is crucial for the development and design of thermally and chemically stable noble metal heterogeneous catalysts. The unique chemical environment can strengthen the NPs interaction with the support surface, which can effectively avoid the agglomeration of NPs . The strategy is developed to modulate the interfacial chemical environment of supported Pt NPs with the help of the unsaturated Al 3+ in Al 2 O 3 N (nanobelt) support, resulting in a sintering-resistant Pt/Al 2 O 3 N catalyst. Al solid-state MAS NMR characterization shows that Al 2 O 3 N support contains a large amount of unsaturated Al penta 3 + (about 22.6%). XAS confirms that Pt NPs deposited on the surface of Al 2 O 3 with rich unsaturated pentahedral coordinated Al 3+ sites have a unique coordination structure at the interface (more Pt-O coordination). When catalyzing the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, the catalytic activity and the particle sizes of Pt NPs do not change significantly even after the reaction at 400 °C for 15 days, and the complete CO conversion temperature increases only by 40 °C when the catalyst is screened at 600 °C for 5 days. This work demonstrates a new strategy to develop stable large-scale anti-sintering noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for many important high-temperature industrial applications.

In Vitro Anticancer Activity of Nanoformulated Mono- and Di-nuclear Pt Compounds

Pan Wang,Jian-Wei Wang,Wen-Hua Zhang,Hongzhen Bai,Guping Tang,David J. Young

Graphical Nanoformulations of a class of mononuclear and dinuclear Pt-based complexes bearing Pt−P bonds have been developed as efficient chemotherapeutic reagents against murine melanoma cell line B16F10. Nanoformulations of mononuclear Pt complexes cis -PtCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ( 1 ), [Pt(PPh 3 ) 2 (L−Cys)] ⋅ H 2 O ( 3 , L−Cys=L-cysteinate), trans -PtCl 2 (PPh 2 PhNMe 2 ) 2 ( 4 ; PPh 2 PhNMe 2 =4-(dimethylamine)triphenylphosphine), trans -PtI 2 (PPh 2 PhNMe 2 ) 2 ( 5 ) and dinuclear Pt cluster Pt 2 ( μ -S) 2 (PPh 3 ) 4 ( 2 ) have comparable cytotoxicity to cisplatin against murine melanoma cell line B16F10. Masking of these discrete molecular entities within the hydrophobic core of Pluronic® F-127 significantly boosted their solubility and stability, ensuring efficient cellular uptake, giving in vitro IC 50 values in the range of 0.87–11.23 μM. These results highlight the potential therapeutic value of Pt complexes featuring stable Pt−P bonds in nanocomposite formulations with biocompatible amphiphilic polymers.

Cu-promoted Pt/activated carbon catalyst for glycerol oxidation to lactic acid

Chen Zhang,Tao Wang,Xiao Liu,Yunjie Ding

A series of copper-promoted platinum supported on activated carbon (Cu-Pt/AC) catalysts were investigated for glycerol oxidation to lactic acid. The catalytic performance of 1.0%Pt/AC catalyst was greatly influenced by Cu loading (0.1–2.0   wt%). Among them, the 0.5%Cu–1.0%Pt/AC catalyst showed the best promotional effect, whose lactic acid yield was 2.4 times of that on 1.0%Pt/AC under same reaction conditions. Characterizations were carried out to explore the relationships between catalyst properties and reaction performances. TEM images show that the introduction of Cu improves the dispersion of Pt and Cu, and some Pt-Cu interfaces are detected by HR-TEM, which would facilitate the glycerol transformation. XPS and H 2 -TPR analyses reveal that good catalyst performance is related with not only a proper surface Pt/Cu molar ratio, but also copper species’ oxidation states. Cu + and Cu 0 species favor glycerol conversion and lactic acid production, whereas large CuO particles facilitate the formation of glyceric acid.

Influence of Acidity of Mesoporous ZSM-5-Supported Pt on Naphthalene Hydrogenation

Jiaojiao Liu,Huifang Zhang,Ningyue Lu,Xiaoliang Yan,Binbin Fan,Ruifeng Li

A series of mesoporous ZSM-5-x (x = Si/Al molar ratio) supports, possessing various Si/Al ratios, were prepared without using the secondary templates, and the influences of acidity of ZSM-5-x on catalytic performance of Pt/HZSM-5-x samples prepared by the conventional wetness impregnation in naphthalene hydrogenation were investigated. The results show that decreasing Si/Al ratios of mesoporous ZSM-5 supports promotes the dispersion of the supported Pt species, and the catalytic efficiencies of Pt/HZSM-5-x samples for naphthalene hydrogenation depend on the integrated effects of the Pt dispersion, the acidity, and the mesoporous structure of ZSM-5 supports. This work provides the detailed influences of acidity of mesoporous ZSM-5 on catalytic performance of supported Pt catalysts in naphthalene hydrogenation.

Selective Electrochemical Decarboxylation of n-Octanoic Acid to Hydrocarbons on Pt Nanocrystals

Shuang Xu,Xiaopo Niu,Gang Yuan,Zheyuan Wang,Shuaikang Zhu,Xiaoxue Li,Yunxi Han,Rong Zhao,Qingfa Wang

Electrocatalytic synthesis of valuable biofuels and chemicals from biomass-derived acids is a promising approach, but selectively producing deoxygenated hydrocarbons is still a great challenge. In this work, we investigated selective electrochemical decarboxylation of n-octanoic acid to produce hydrocarbons (n-tetradecane, n-heptane, and n-heptene) in a single electrolytic cell at room temperature. Pt nanoparticles with different morphologies (nanospheres, nanoflowers, and nanothorns) and further Pt nanothorns with different plane distributions on carbon fiber paper (CFP) were fabricated by a controllable electrodeposition method. The results proved that the Pt(311) plane has the best selectivity and intrinsic activity for decarboxylation products, especially for Kolbe hydrocarbons. The Pt(110) plane shows a similar intrinsic activity as the Pt(311) planes. High selectivity (75%), yield (35%), and Faraday efficiency (34%) for hydrocarbons were achieved over the Pt nanothorn (Pt-NT), which were approximately 1.6, 2.3, and 3.3 times that of Pt nanoflowers, Pt nanospheres, and Pt/C, respectively. The high electrocatalytic activity of Pt nanothorns was attributed to its high electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and enhanced intrinsic activity derived from the high level of Pt(311) and Pt(110) planes.

Chain-ordered Pt atoms with delocalized electronic structure for improved hydrogen production

Xiaoru Sang,Peikun Zhang,Wenyan Shi,Xiuyun An,Zude Shi,Linyuan Chen,Hang Xia,Yubin Jiang,Jinbo Wang,Tomasz Kosmala,Caitian Gao,Chengshi Gong,Xiankui Wei,Zhuhua Zhang,Yongmin He

As the smallest one-dimensional structure, single-atom chains exhibit many one-dimensional quantized behaviors, such as Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior, high-temperature superconductivity, and fluctuations. In contrast to single-atom catalysts, there is growing interest in exploring whether and how the point-to-point interaction occurs between neighboring metal atoms in 1D chains. Here, we controllably fabricate Pt chains and single atoms in MoS 2 films with similar coordination environments and conduct model studies on their catalytic behaviors in hydrogen production. Combining calculations with field effect transistor and micro-electrochemical measurements, we reveal that the chains exhibit significant delocalized electron densities, which underpins their metallic behavior and engenders a fascinating center site with lower Gibbs free energy than that of single atoms. Notably, we demonstrate that the chain density can be well-tuned, achieving a maximum of 2.82 Pt/nm 2 , which enables a competitive turnover frequency and wafer-scale hydrogen production. This work offers insights into our understanding of the possible synergistic effect between metal atoms in a 1D arrangement for electrocatalysis. Controlling single atoms into one-dimensional chains offers a platform to study atomic interactions. Here, the authors report that Pt chains host delocalized electrons and a distinct active site, giving metallic character and faster hydrogen evolution than isolated atoms.

Fully exposed Pt clusters for efficient catalysis of multi-step hydrogenation reactions

Si Yang,Jiao Yueyue,Wang Maolin,Xiang Shengling,Diao Jiangyong,Chen Xiaowen,Chen Jiawei,Wang Yue,Xiao Dequan,Wen Xiaodong,Wang Ning,Ma Ding,Liu Hongyang

For di-nitroaromatics hydrogenation, it is a challenge to achieve the multi-step hydrogenation with high activity and selectivity due to the complexity of the process involving two nitro groups. Consequently, many precious metal catalysts suffer from low activity for this multi-step hydrogenation reaction. Herein, we employ a fully exposed Pt clusters catalyst consisting of an average of four Pt atoms on nanodiamond@graphene (Pt n /ND@G), demonstrating excellent catalytic performance for the multi-step hydrogenation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The TOF (40647 h −1 ) of Pt n /ND@G is significantly superior to that of single Pt atoms catalyst, Pt nanoparticles catalyst, and even all the known catalysts. Density functional theory calculations and absorption experiments reveal that the synergetic interaction between the multiple active sites of Pt n /ND@G facilitate the co-adsorption/activation of reactants and H 2 , as well as the desorption of intermediates/products, which is the key for the higher catalytic activity than single Pt atoms catalyst and Pt nanoparticles catalyst.

Unraveling Potassium Poisoning Mechanisms over Pt/TiO2 Catalysts for Complete Propane Oxidation

Chi Zhang,Qi Miao,Zongpeng Zou,Li Lv,Shengwei Tang,Wenxiang Tang

Impurity ions derived from the catalyst synthesis or operation would profoundly affect the performance of Pt-based metal oxides. In this study, we report a severe, support-dependent poisoning effect on Pt-based catalysts, with the severity varying significantly with the support material (TiO2, CeO2, and Al2O3) and the type of catalytic reaction (propane and CO oxidation). Specifically, the poisoned Pt/TiO2 catalyst showed negligible propane oxidation activity even at 650 °C, while simple water washing restored its activity, achieving 90% propane conversion at 324 °C. In contrast, the detrimental effect of K+ ions was much weaker in CO oxidation or when nonreducible Al2O3 was used as the support. Combined characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the oxophilic K+ ions passivate the active PtOx nanoclusters and suppress redox dynamics. More crucially, the spillover effect between metal and support was blocked, such as oxygen or hydrogen spillover. Strong CO2 and H2O adsorption also contributed to the serious activity loss on the K+-poisoned Pt/TiO2 catalyst. This work elucidates the support- and reaction-dependent poisoning role of K+ ions on Pt-based catalysts, offering critical insights for designing robust and efficient catalysts for deep propane combustion.

Scalable Ni‑driven synthesis of Pt single‑site catalysts for hydrogen evolution

Ma Huijing,Wang Haifei,Cai Chengcheng,Song Hongyu,Guo Qianqing,Long Xia,Qian Xufang,Zhao Yixin

Low-platinum-loading electrocatalysts, offering both high activity and durability under practical conditions, are essential for sustainable hydrogen production. Here we report a scalable synthesis of a platinum single-site catalyst supported on Ni-N-doped carbon nanotubes, achieved via a facile Ni-driven one-step reduction-displacement of Pt 4+ . The catalyst NCNT-Ni/Pt features a N 2 -Pt-Cl 2 initial coordination, where the dynamic evolution of Pt-Cl bonds regulates the hydrogen evolution reaction performance. Excitingly, the catalyst demonstrates an overpotential of 7.78 ± 0.86 mV at 10 mA cm –2 . With a Pt loading of 6 μg cm –2 , it enables industrially relevant proton exchange membrane water electrolysis at 1.63 V@1 A cm –2 , with a degradation rate of 3.3 μV h –1 , sustained over 4500 h. Coupled with a 21%-efficient photovoltaic module, it delivers a 16.06% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency at industrial-level current density. This study presents a practical strategy for minimizing precious-metal use in the synthesis of industrial-grade hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts.

Balancing micro-/mesoporosity in Pt/KL zeolite catalysts for n-heptane aromatization

Dan Xu,Zhuoya Bao,Chengyao Tian,Yong Su,Angang Song,Hui Fu,Hengyi Fang,Rongkai Kang,Jianmei Wang,Arthur Ernest Koschany,Mingxing Tang,Mingdong Yi,Shuyuan Wang

1,2,6-Hexanetriol tailors KL zeolites with varied micro-/mesopore ratios. • ALD introduces Pt species into both microporous and mesoporous KL regions • A balanced micro-/mesopore architecture promotes toluene production. • An optimized pore architecture suppresses the formation of isomers. The pore architecture of KL zeolite plays a critical role in linear alkane aromatization over Pt-based catalysts. However, how the interplay between microporous confinement and mesopore-enabled diffusion regulates Pt species and the subsequent formation of aromatics remains insufficiently understood. Herein, 1,2,6-hexanetriol was selected as a zeolite growth modifier to tailor the porous structure of KL zeolite with varied micro-/mesopore ratios. Pt species were then introduced into the KL zeolites by atomic layer deposition, affording a series of Pt/KL catalysts in which Pt species were distributed in both microporous and mesoporous regions. The Pt/KL-T 1 catalyst with a mesopore-to-micropore volume ratio of 1.2 gave an enhanced toluene formation rate (7.6 × 10 2 mmol Toluene ·g Pt –1 ·h –1 ), which was approximately twice that of the purely microporous Pt/KL catalyst. Combined structural characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations indicated an appropriate balance between micropore and mesopore facilitates the diffusion and further dehydrocyclization of alkene (σC 7 = ) intermediates, while suppressing isomer formation. These findings clarify the balance of micro- and mesoporosity in KL zeolite and provide a strategy to tune Pt/KL-based catalysts for alkane aromatization. Synergistic non-bonding diatomic Pt sites for efficient hydrogenation of nitro compounds

Chen Minhao,Jing Yundao,Ge Xiaohu,Cao Yueqiang,Zhang Jing,Qian Gang,Jiang Hao,Zhou Xinggui,Chen De,Yuan Weikang,Duan Xuezhi

Precisely constructed diatomic metal sites that bridge the gap between single-atom dispersion and cluster-like synergy offer a promising strategy to overcome the activity-selectivity trade-off in heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, we report the synthesis of a non-bonding diatomic Pt 2 -ND@G catalyst via a two-step atomic layer deposition for the selective hydrogenation of m-dinitrobenzene. Aberration-corrected high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that Pt 2 -ND@G predominantly contains high-density non-bonding Pt diatomic sites with well-tuned electronic interactions. Pt 2 -ND@G achieves complete m-dinitrobenzene conversion with >99.0% selectivity toward m-phenylenediamine and retains high stability over five cycles under mild conditions, outperforming reference catalysts including isolated single atoms, fully exposed clusters, and nanoparticles. Experimental and theoretical studies further suggest that the electron-deficient non-bonding diatomic Pt sites synergistically activate both m-dinitrobenzene and hydrogen, while also promoting the efficient desorption of m-phenylenediamine. This work highlights the structural and electronic advantages of high-density diatomic catalysts for multi-step hydrogenation and offers a versatile platform for catalyst design.
