Photocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction coupled carbon dioxide reduction reaction holds great promise for sustainable urea synthesis, the design of photocatalysts with efficient C-N coupling and charge separation is crucial yet challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel MOF-on-MOF S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with interfacial dual active sites for efficient urea production via nitrate reduction reaction coupled carbon dioxide reduction reaction. The integration of semiconducting Zr-MOF and Co-MOF produces interfacial Co and Zr dual sites for NO 3 - activation and CO 2 adsorption, synergistically promoting C-N coupling with reduced energy barriers. Besides, the S-scheme heterojunction enables the strong redox capability and facilitates the charge transfer. Consequently, the rationally designed MOF-on-MOF heterojunction achieves a high urea yield of 3523.4 μg g⁻¹ h⁻¹ and an apparent quantum yield of 1.16% at 365 nm in the absence of sacrificial agents. This work paves the way for the development of high-performance photocatalysts for urea production.

Li‒S batteries offer a transformative alternative to present energy storage technologies. However, their practical viability is impeded by polysulfide shuttling and lithium dendrite formation. Electrolyte engineering seeks to solve these thorny issues, yet conventional approaches rely on internal, static or invasive modifications. Here we report an acoustic-induced entropy-driven electrolyte design to steer Li‒S chemistry, realizing enhanced sulfur conversion kinetics and sustained lithium working interface. With the aid of comprehensive instrumental and computational toolbox, it is shown that the entropy-driven state of the electrolyte propels the homogeneous nucleation of both sulfur and lithium species, along with dictating Li-ion desolvation process. The designed electrolyte at a lean dosage of 2.9 µL mg –1 readily enables a 1.1 Ah-level pouch cell with a delivered specific energy of 404.1 Wh kg -1 without packaging. Our electrolyte formulation concept using external field modulation offers an appealing solution to overcome key hurdles in Li–S technology toward high-performance devices.

Six new bis(benzimidazolyl) monomers containing ether, sulfonyl and ketone groups were synthesized efficiently. A series of poly( N -arylenebenzimidazole)s were prepared using an aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction that removed the N–H sites from the novel bis(benzimidazolyl) derivatives with activated aromatic difluorides in sulfolane. The reaction was carried out at 210 °C in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. All resulting polymers showed essentially amorphous patterns. This was consistent with the calculated results. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric measurements showed that the polymers had high glass transition temperatures (>240 °C), good thermostability and high decomposition temperatures (>400 °C). These novel polymers also showed easy solubility. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

The widespread industrial adoption of carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (C f /SiC) composites is currently hindered by the long processing cycles and high energy consumption of traditional fabrication methods. This study presents a novel ultrafast pressure sintering method for fabricating C f /SiC composites. Densified C f /SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) were achieved in 60 s by using borosilicate as a liquid-phase sintering aid. Under optimal processing conditions, the resulting composites exhibited a bulk density of 2.06 g/cm 3 , open porosity of 2.64%, flexural strength of 188.1 ± 15.5 MPa, and fracture toughness of 5.96 ± 0.11 MPa·m 1/2 . This work presents a facile and ultrafast technique that significantly reduces the manufacturing time of C f /SiC composites, paving the way for their broader industrial applications.

Background: Bisphenol S (BPS) is a substitute for bisphenol A in various commercial products and is increasingly used globally due to restrictions on bisphenol A usage. Consequently, there are increasing public health concerns that substantial effects mediated by synthetic chemicals may impact human health. Recently, epidemiology studies reported associations between bisphenol exposure and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)]. However, the causal relationship and the molecular mechanisms affecting hepatocellular functions are still unknown. Objectives: Our study aimed to understand the molecular mechanism by which BPS exposure caused hepatic lipid deposition. Methods: C57BL/6J mice were exposed to BPS for 3 months, and its effects were assessed by histology. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with high-throughout sequencing (ATAC-seq), and cleavage under targets and tagmentation (CUT&Tag) were used to investigate mechanistic details. ATF3 liver-specific knockout mice and cells were used to validate its functions in BPS-induced hepatotoxicity. Results: Here, mice that were chronically exposed to BPS showed significant lipid deposition in the liver and dyslipidemia and were predisposed to MASLD, accompanied with a reprogrammed liver transcriptional network and chromatin accessibility that was enriched for the Atf3 binding motif. Comparing to the control group, we identified numerous differential Atf3 binding sites associated with signaling pathways integral to lipid catabolism and synthesis in the BPS exposure group, resulting in a drastic surge in lipid accumulation. Moreover, knocking out Atf3 in vitro and in vivo significantly attenuates BPS-induced hepatic lipid accumulation via the regulation of chromatin accessibility and gene expression. Besides, inhibiting JunB also eliminates BPS-induced Atf3 upregulation and lipid accumulation. Conclusion: Our study reveals a novel mechanism, through which BPS upregulates JunB and Atf3 to impair hepatic lipid metabolism, and provides new insights into the hepatotoxicity of BPS. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP17057

TiO 2 photocatalysts are of great interest in the fields of environmental purification, new energy and so on, because of their non-toxicity, high stability, high redox ability and low cost. However, the photogenerated carriers are severely recombined, which limits the application of TiO 2 photocatalysts. Herein, S-scheme Cu 3 P/TiO 2 heterojunction composites were successfully synthesized by a simple and efficient microwave hydrothermal method, and the results show that the hydrogen production rate of Cu 3 P/TiO 2 is 5.83 mmol∙g −1 ∙h −1 under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 7.3 and 83.3 times higher than that of pure TiO 2 and Cu 3 P, respectively. This excellent performance is derived from the internal electric field (IEF) and energy band bending generated by the S-scheme heterojunction formed between Cu 3 P and TiO 2 . The density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the Cu 3 P possess smaller work function and more negative conduction band (CB) position than that of TiO 2 , which is very conducive to greatly improve the H + reduction ability and hydrogen production performance. This work provides a new idea for the reveal of electron transfer paths and active sites in S-scheme heterojunctions and deepens the mechanism understanding.

The recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes is a crucial factor limiting photocatalytic H 2 evolution. The S-scheme ZnWO 4 -ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction with 2D coupling interfaces was successfully synthesized using a simple solvothermal method. An effective S-scheme interfacial charge migration route at the S-scheme heterogeneous interface was determined by energy band structure analyses (such as UPS, Mott-Schottky and XPS plots), which facilitates the separation of photoexcited carriers. It is worth noting that the optimal ZnWO 4 -ZnIn 2 S 4 composite has an H 2 evolution activity of 4925.3 μmol g −1 h −1 with favourable photostability and stability. Meanwhile, the ZnWO 4 -ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction exhibits the maximum optical response value (2.8 mA cm −2 ) in the initial stage, effectively promoting the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. The establishment of the built-in electric field direction at the interface can effectively promote the space charge separation between the ZnWO 4 and ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets, which is favorable to the photocatalytic H 2 evolution. This work provides valuable guidance for designing S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts composed of two n-type semiconductors for energy and environmental applications.

Bisphenol S (BPS) is a bisphenol A (BPA) replacement that is widely present in the environment and in humans. The association between obesity and BPS has been reported in epidemiological studies; however, the obesogenic effect and related mechanism of BPS remain poorly understood. In this study, high-resolution microcomputed tomography analysis showed that the volume of visceral fat was significantly increased in BPS-treated mice. Moreover, BPS showed a higher potency to induce visceral fat formation in mice than BPA at the exposure concentration of 5 mg/kg/day for 14 days. Nontargeted metabolomic analysis showed that BPS exposure induced multiple metabolic disorders in the livers of BPS-treated mice. Interestingly, the body weight and volumes of visceral fat returned to normal by co-treatment with succinate in BPS-treated mice, suggesting that succinate might be the key molecule for the link between BPS and visceral obesity. Our findings highlight that BPS may act as an environmental obesogen to promote obesity.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is limited in alkaline and acid solution because the active sites are on the finite edge with extended basal plane remaining inert. Herein, we activated the interfacial S sites by coupling with Ru nanoparticles on the inert basal plane of MoS 2 nanosheets. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental results show that the interfacial S electronic structure was modulated. And the results of Δ G H* demonstrate that the adsorption of H on the MoS 2 was also optimized. With the advantage of interfacial S sites activation, the Ru-MoS 2 needs only overpotential of 110 and 98 mV to achieve 10 mA·cm −2 in both 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH solution, respectively. This strategy paves a new way for activating the basal plane of other transition metal sulfide electrocatalysts for improving the HER performance.

Photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is an ideal pathway for obtaining solar fuels. Herein, an S-scheme heterojunction is constructed in hybrid TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 photocatalyst, which greatly promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers to foster efficient H 2 O 2 evolution. These composite photocatalysts show a high H 2 O 2 yield of 376 µmol/(L·h). The mechanism of charge transfer and separation within the S-scheme heterojunction is well studied by computational methods and experiments. Density functional theory and in-situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal distinct features of the S-scheme heterojunction in the TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 hybrids and demonstrate charge transfer mechanisms. The density functional theory calculation and electron paramagnetic resonance results suggest that O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 follows stepwise one-electron processes. In 2 S 3 shows a much stronger interaction with O 2 than TiO 2 as well as a higher reduction ability, serving as the active sites for H 2 O 2 generation. The work provides a novel design of S-scheme photocatalyst with high H 2 O 2 evolution efficiency and mechanistically demonstrates the improved separation of charge carriers.

Heteroatom doping in carbon aerogels is critical for improving the surface areas and electronic properties of these aerogels. This paper demonstrates doping sulfur (S) atom into carbon aerogels. S-doped carbon aerogels (S-CAs) were prepared via a sol-gel process using phloroglucinol (P), resorcinol (R) and formaldehyde as the polymerization precursors with sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) as the basic catalyst and sodium 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate (HBS) as the surfactant . The as-synthesized products were dried in normal temperature and carbonized with temperature-programmed. The effects of S-doping on the surface area and electronic properties of the S-CAs were studied by a surface area analyzer and electrochemical workstation. When the S loading was up to 1.38%, the corresponding S-CA exhibited the most optimal surface area and specific capacitance. The textural properties were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a surface area analyzer, an X-ray diffraction spectrometer, a Raman spectrometer, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra, an elemental analyzer and an EDX detector, and the electrochemical properties were measured using cyclic voltammetry , galvanostatic charge–discharge measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). When the molar ratio of HBS/(P + R) was 0.05, the S loading was 1.38%, the specific surface area of the as-synthesized CA was 831 m 2 /g, and its specific capacitance was 105 F/g.

Graphical Going off with a bang ! A series of novel explosive poly(ionic liquid)s (E-PILs) are designed and prepared by introducing an energetic nitrato group and nitro-rich anions into polymeric chains. All E-PILs show higher detonation performances than state-of-the-art energetic polymers. The E-PILs are promising candidates for applications as binders and/or plasticizers for explosive formulations. The development of ionic-liquid-derived functional materials would be vital for stimulation of the interdisciplinary research in the fields of ionic liquid chemistry and material science. Here, a series of novel poly(ionic liquid)s with explosive capability were designed and prepared by introducing the energetic nitrato group and nitro-rich anions, such as nitrate, dinitramide, and nitroform into the polymeric chains. The as-synthesized explosive poly(ionic liquid)s (E-PILs) were fully characterized, and their physicochemical and detonation properties were investigated. All E-PILs show higher detonation performances than state-of-the-art energetic polymers including glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and poly(glycidyl nitrate) [poly(GLYN)]. Some E-PILs exhibit higher calculated detonation velocities and pressures than 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). These E-PILs are promising candidates for applications as new high-performance energetic polymers.
