A universal strategy to enhance photothermal conversion efficiency by regulating the molecular aggregation states for safe photothermal therapy of bacterial infections

Hao Fu,Yongxin Zhang,Cheng Wang,Zhencheng Sun,Shuyi Lv,Minghui Xiao,Kaiyu Wu,Linqi Shi,Chunlei Zhu

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a promising approach for treating bacterial infections. However, achieving a high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of photothermal agents (PTAs) remains a challenge. Such a problem is usually compensated by the use of a high-intensity laser, which inevitably causes tissue damage. Here, we present a universal strategy to enhance PCE by regulating the molecular aggregation states of PTAs within thermoresponsive nanogels. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach using aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) PTAs, showing significant enhancements in PCE without the need for intricate molecular modifications. Notably, the highest PCEs reach up to 80.9% and 64.4% for AIE-NG and ACQ-NG, respectively, which are nearly 2-fold of their self-aggregate counterparts. Moreover, we elucidate the mechanism underlying PCE enhancement, highlighting the role of strong intermolecular π−π interactions facilitated by nanogel-induced volume contraction. Furthermore, we validate the safety and efficacy of this strategy in in vitro and in vivo models of bacterial infections at safe laser power densities, demonstrating its potential for clinical translation. Our findings offer a straightforward, universal, and versatile method to improve PTT outcomes while minimizing cytotoxicity, paving the way for enhanced treatment of bacterial infections with safe PTT protocols.

An integrated long-acting implant of clinical safe cells, drug and biomaterials effectively promotes spinal cord repair and restores motor functions

Liming Li,Jiafu Mu,Jiachen Chen,Tianchen Huang,Yu Zhang,Youzhi Cai,Tianyuan Zhang,Xianglei Kong,Jihong Sun,Xinchi Jiang,Jiahe Wu,Jian Cao,Xunqi Zhang,Fei Huang,Shiqing Feng,Jianqing Gao

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is incurable and raises growing concerns. The main barrier to nerve repair is the complicated inhibitory microenvironment, where single-targeted strategies are largely frustrated. Despite the progress in combinatory therapeutic systems, the development and translation of effective therapies remain a challenge with extremely limited clinical materials. In this study, mesenchymal stem cells are transplanted in combination with sustained release of methylprednisolone through delivery in one composite matrix of a microsphere-enveloped adhesive hydrogel. All the materials used, including the stem cells, drug, and the matrix polymers gelatin and hyaluronan, are clinically approved. The therapeutic effects and safety issues are evaluated on rat and canine SCI models. The implantation significantly promotes functional restoration and nerve repair in a severe long-span rat spinal cord transection model. Distant spinal cord segments and the urinary system are effectively protected against pathologic damage. Moreover, the local sustained drug delivery mitigates the inflammatory microenvironment when overcoming the clinical issue of systemic side effects. The study presents an innovative strategy to achieve safe and efficient combinatory treatment of SCI.

Assembly of phytic acid-Ni2+ via bionic poly-dopamine-mediated to construct a core-shell MgCO3 for fire-safe EVA composites

Xiaojing Duan,Jiachen Zhu,Chenyang Li,Huidong Fang,Wanji Zhou,Shiai Xu

A mussel-inspired polydopamine-assisted layer-by-layer assembly combined with a metal-chelating strategy using phytic acid was employed to synthesize a novel multi-level core-shell magnesium carbonate-based flame retardant (AMC@PDA@PA-Ni) for enhancing the fire safety of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers. The incorporation of 50 wt% AMC@PDA@PA-Ni increased the LOI of the EVA composite to 30.3 %, achieving a UL94 V-1 rating. Compared to pristine EVA, the composite exhibited a 63.3 % reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR) and a 66.7 % decrease in peak smoke release rate (pSPR). At elevated temperatures, the combined effects of AMC's gas-solid phase flame retardancy, the phosphorus-containing flame retardant's quenching action, and the transition metal nickel's catalytic charring capability significantly contributed to the composite's superior fire resistance. Additionally, the tensile strength of the EVA/AMC@PDA@PA-Ni composite increased by 97.6 % relative to EVA/AMC, attributed to the PDA modification, which enhanced filler dispersion and interfacial adhesion. This study introduces a facile and effective strategy for developing bio-based multi-level core-shell hybrid flame retardants with outstanding fire resistance and mechanical strength retention.

Development of stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces with multifunctional flame-retardant microspheres for safe, high-voltage, and high-energy-density lithium batteries

Hao Yu,Guoqing Liu,Hao Jia,Tao Zhu,Xinxin Dong,Wei Liu,Xiaoyu Gu,Shuheng Wang,Sheng Zhang

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) organic solid electrolyte is regarded as one of the important research directions of next-generation battery technology due to its good electrode interface compatibility, mechanical flexibility, and economic processability. However, the low ionic conductivity, limited electrochemical stability, and flammability of PEO have restricted its large-scale application. This work reports the synthesis of multifunctional flame-retardant microspheres (HCCP-THEIC, HT) using hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC), and subsequently incorporation into PEO. It has been demonstrated that the crystallinity of PEO is reduced under the synergistic effect of physical hindrance from HT and the weak intermolecular hydrogen-bond interactions between HT and PEO. This promotes the dissociation of lithium salts, leading to an increase in the mobility and concentration of free Li + , thereby expanding the electrochemical window to 4.7 V. More importantly, HT stabilizes the electrode-electrolyte interface, promotes the formation of stabilized constituents in both the SEI (solid electrolyte interphase) and CEI (cathode electrolyte interphase) layers, and effectively suppresses lithium dendrites growth. The LiNi₀.₈Mn₀.₁Co₀.₁O₂ (NCM811)//Li cell retains 77.4 % of its capacity after 100 cycles at 4.3 V and 0.5C. Additionally, HT enhances fire safety through free radical scavenging and condensed-phase carbonization, reducing the heat release of pouch batteries by approximately 10 %. This simple and scalable HT synthesis offers a promising approach for producing safe, high-performance, and stable all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

A Biodegradable Nano-Drug Delivery Platform for Co-Delivery of Minocycline and Chitosan to Achieve Efficient and Safe Non-Surgical Periodontitis Therapy

Yang Jinxin,Mou Jie,Ding Kexin,Zhu Shaoyue,Sun Zhe,Cui Yawen,Meng Sihan,Qiang Guowei,Zhong Weisen,Liu Zongxiang

Introduction: Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) are widely used as ideal nanovehicles for the delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs. However, the balance between high anti-periodontitis activity and low biotoxicity has been challenging to maintain in most relevant studies owing to the slow degradation of silica in living organisms. Method: In this study, -responsive hydroxyapatite (HAP) was doped into the MSN skeleton, and the chemotherapeutic drug minocycline hydrochloride (MH) was loaded into the pores of MSN, forming a negatively charged drug delivery system. Cationic chitosan (COS) is a biodegradable material with high antibacterial performance and good biosafety. In this study, COS was immobilized on the surface of the drug-loaded particles through stable charge interaction to construct a composite drug delivery system (MH@MSNion@COS). Results: In vitro and cellular experiments demonstrated effective degradation of the nanocarrier system and synchronized controlled release of the drug. Notably, compared with single MH administration, this system, in which MH and COS jointly regulated the expression levels of periodontitis- associated inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and iNOS), better inhibited the progress of periodontitis and induced tissue regeneration without showing significant toxic side effects in cells. Conclusion: This system provides a promising strategy for the design of intelligent, efficient, and safe anti-periodontitis drug delivery systems.

Fe-biochar as a safe and efficient catalyst to activate peracetic acid for the removal of the acid orange dye from water

Changjie Shi,Yong Wang,Kai Zhang,Eric Lichtfouse,Cong Li,Yunshu Zhang

Pollution of wastewater and natural waters by organic contaminants is a major health issue, yet actual remediation methods are limited by incomplete removal of recalcitrant contaminants and by secondary pollution by chlorinated contaminants and catalytic metals. To attempt to solve these issues, we tested the removal of acid orange by peracetic acid (PAA), a safe oxidant , activated by Fe-biochar that iron anchored on biochar to prevent secondary pollution by iron. Fe-biochar was synthesized using a simple, one-step pyrolysis method. We investigated the effects of PAA concentration, pH, humic acids , chloride, bicarbonate on the reaction. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance were used to identify reacting species. Results showed that the granulous structure of Fe-biochar and the presence of Fe, Fe 3 O 4 , Fe 2 O 3 , and Fe 3 C on Fe-biochar surface. The highest removal of acid orange of 99.9% was obtained with 1.144 mM PAA and 0.3 g/L Fe-biochar at pH 7. Acid orange removal increases with Fe-biochar dose, decreases with pH, is slightly inhibited by humic acids and bicarbonate, and is not modified by chloride. Our experimental results suggested that CH 3 C(O)OO· and CH 3 C(O)O· are the main radical species, but there may also be non-radical effects in Fe-biochar/PAA process. Fe-biochar displayed high re-usability, with 92.8% removal after five uses.

Magnetic “one-step” quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe method for the fast determination of pesticide residues in freshly squeezed juice

Hao-Bo Zheng,Jun Ding,Shu-Jian Zheng,Qiong-Wei Yu,Bi-Feng Yuan,Yu-Qi Feng

A “one-step” quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) method was proposed for pesticide residue analysis in freshly squeezed juice of fruits and vegetables. In this method, a new magnetic adsorbent prepared by simple physical blending was adopt, which could endow the sample mixture with magnetic separability. To achieve the best performance of the modified QuEChERS towards target analytes, the amounts of adsorbents were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, a simple, rapid and sensitive method for the determination of 11 pesticide residues in freshly squeezed juice was established by coupling modified QuEChERS to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. The limits of quantification of the proposed method for 11 pesticides ranged from 2.0 to 49.6   ng/g. Good linearities ( R value ≥0.9993) were achieved at different concentration ranges, and acceptable method reproducibility was obtained by evaluating intra- and inter-day precisions with the relative standard deviations being less than 8.5% and 13.5%, respectively. The recoveries were in the range of 70.3–114.1% at different concentrations for real samples. Compared with the traditional QuEChERS methods, extraction/partitioning and purification were integrated into one step in the proposed method, which thus was time-saving (within 3.5   min) with keeping good clean-up performance.

A fully biomass-derived intrinsically flame-retardant phenolic resin: Robust adhesion, fire-safe coatings, and closed-loop upcycling for multifunctional cellulose fibers

Wei Tan,Lei Tan,Yin Tian,Ying Chang,Guixiang Song,Lu Bai,Ping Li,Yuanlin Ren,Xiaohui Liu

A fully biomass-derived TA-PPF phenolic network was rationally designed • TA-PPF integrates intrinsic flame retardancy, robust adhesion, and recyclability • TA-PPF delivers excellent fire safety with an LOI of 64.5% and a UL-94 V-0 rating • TA-PPF extends fire-safety protection to wood and regenerated cellulose fibers To mitigate ecological pollution and fossil-resource depletion caused by traditional petroleum-based materials, biomass-derived functional materials have emerged as promising sustainable alternatives. Herein, a fully biomass-derived phenolic resin (TA-PPF) was developed from renewable feedstocks, which integrated intrinsic flame retardancy, robust adhesion, and value-added reuse capability. TA-PPF exhibited an exceptionally high limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 64.5% and maintained its structural integrity without macroscopic collapse after continuous exposure to a butane flame for 240 s, outperforming many previously reported bio-based and petrochemical flame-retardant materials. Additionally, TA-PPF exhibited robust adhesion to diverse substrates, achieving an adhesion strength of 3.65 MPa on wood and retaining favorable environmental stability in organic solvents, acidic and alkaline media, and under extreme temperatures. Benefiting from its intrinsic flame retardancy and adhesion capability, TA-PPF was further applied as an eco-friendly fire-safety coating for wood, increasing its LOI from 22.3% to 45.4%. Furthermore, inspired by the natural synergy between polyphenols and carbohydrates in plants, waste TA-PPF was repurposed as a functional additive for regenerated cellulose fibers, producing multifunctional composite fibers with excellent flame retardancy and ultraviolet protection, as evidenced by an LOI of 33.5% and an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 136.63. This work provides a sustainable strategy for developing high-performance bio-based resins, fire-safety coatings, and multifunctional regenerated cellulose fibers. From antibiotic mycelial residue to safe organic fertilizer: Synergistic removal of pleuromutilin and antibiotic resistance genes via alkaline-thermal pretreatment and composting

Jingze Guan,Yanqiong Wang,Xuesong Hui,Peng Wang,Huiling Liu,Xiaohu Dai

Pleuromutilin mycelial residue (PMR), a by-product of tiamulin production containing residual antibiotics, is listed in the Chinese Directory of National Hazardous Wastes. Aiming at the detoxification and resource utilization of PMR, this study examines a full-systematic process involving alkaline thermal pretreatment, aerobic composting, and soil risk evaluation. Under optimized pretreatment conditions, the release of water-soluble organic matter increased by approximately 72.3%, while 51.5% of residual pleuromutilin was simultaneously degraded, enhancing substrate biodegradability. Following aerobic composting, pleuromutilin in fertilizer were further reduced to below 50.0 μg/kg, and the fertilizer exhibited higher nutrient content (8.1%) than a selected commercial fertilizer (5.1%). Pot experiments showed that application of the PMR-derived compost improved soil organic matter, available nitrogen, and enzyme activities without adversely affecting soil quality. Quantification of ARGs indicated no enrichment of targeted ARGs in soil amended with this fertilizer, suggesting low ecological risk under the investigated conditions. Soil microbial diversity analysis indicated that the application of bacterial residue fertilizer caused weaker environmental disturbances and maintained high community structure similarity. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive strategy for PMR valorization with controlled antibiotic and antibiotic resistance risks

Synergistic engineering of NiCo- layered double hydroxide/ZIF-8 for constructing a flame-retardant and superhydrophobic sponge toward safe oil-water separation

Yukai Huang,Bin Zhang,Ruoyu Chen,Meng Guo,Qian Jia

Polyurethane (PU) sponges are promising for oil-water separation, but their high flammability poses serious safety risks. To address this challenge, a multifunctional composite sponge was prepared by decorating a PU scaffold with a synergistic coating of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), NiCo-layered double hydroxide (LDH), and ZIF-8. This NiCo-LDH/ZIF-8@PDMS@PU composite sponge integrates superhydrophobicity, high oil-adsorption capacity, and intrinsic flame retardancy. The composite sponge exhibits a water contact angle of 153.4° and achieves self-extinguishing behavior, increasing the burning time from 5 s (pristine PU) to 16 s while eliminating melt dripping and reducing toxic fume emission. It shows high saturation adsorption capacity (26.6-82.9 g/g) for various oils and organics, and separation efficiency exceeding 99%, which remains above 98.5% after 20 adsorption-extrusion cycles. Furthermore, the composite sponge maintains its superhydrophobicity and separation performance after exposure to extreme pH, saline, and mechanical agitation conditions, demonstrating excellent environmental stability. This work provides a durable and safe material solution for oil-spill remediation, highlighting the great potential of multi-component synergistic design in developing advanced separation materials.

Recyclable methylcellulose-based reversibly cross-linked hydroplastics with excellent environmental stability for use in flexible printed circuit boards capable of safe disposal

Zhiqi Wang,Qing Bai,Wenjie Wang,Yunan Qing,Yixuan Li,Junqi Sun

Recyclable and degradable flexible bio-based plastics integrating high stability and efficient disintegration on demand are suitable for the fabrication of flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs) capable of safe disposal. However, it is challenging to develop a facile and environmentally friendly method to fabricate such bio-based plastic substrates. Herein, recyclable and degradable reversibly cross-linked hydroplastics with high thermal stability and water stability used as the substrates of FPCBs are fabricated through the complexation of methylcellulose (MC) and tannic acid (TA) in pure water, followed by hot-pressing. Because of dynamic nanoconfinement phases, the bio-based hydroplastic (denoted as TA-MC) with a breaking strength of 109.6 MPa possesses a high storage modulus of 2.85 GPa at 180 °C. Even being immersed in water for 15 days, the hydroplastic still retains a high breaking strength of 40.4 MPa. Owing to the reversibility of hydrogen bonds, the hydroplastic can be recycled for several times. Moreover, FPCBs composed of flexible TA-MC substrates and 3D printed sensing components can be employed for reliable underwater detection. Electronic components can be easily separated from the FPCBs by dissolving TA-MC substrates in medical alcohol and residue polymer matrices, which degrade into non-toxic substances in soil, can be safely discarded without polluting the environment.

Warm temperature thermal stimulation enhanced X-ray induced narrow-band UVB afterglow as long time safe irradiation source for phototherapy of psoriasis

Wei Meng,Ya Gao,Xiaoyan Fu,Yuting Huang,Haonan Li,Guotao Sun,Wenzhi Sun,Jing Jin,Changsheng Wang,Hongwu Zhang

A NB-UVB long persistent luminescence phosphor Ca 2 GeO 4 : Gd 3+ was synthesized, and the remaining luminescence decay lasted for more than 12 h. • After heating treatment, the NB-UVB afterglow intensity of the flexible film increased by three times. • The heat generated by short-term sunlight exposure can also enhance the emission of NB-UVB afterglow. Narrow-band UVB (NB-UVB) is markedly efficacious option for the treatment of psoriasis. However, the NB-UVB therapy still requires specialized medical equipment to avoid the possible risk of skin injury, which has poor portability and then limits its further application. Here, we have prepared a flexible film containing long afterglow NB-UVB phosphor Ca 2 GeO 4 : Gd 3+ , which persistent NB-UVB afterglow emission at 314 nm can be regarded as long time safe irradiation source for the phototherapy of psoriasis. Our results have shown that CGO: Gd 3+ can continuously release NB-UVB photons for more than 12 h, indicating that long time mild UVB irradiation source can be realized. More importantly, after warm temperature treatment, the NB-UVB afterglow emissions of the flexible film are enhanced to 3 times stronger, indicative of the recovery of high phototherapy efficiency. Furthermore, short-time sunlight induced heat also can enhance the NB-UVB afterglow emission intensity obviously, indicating high phototherapy efficiency can be kept when the film is exposed to sunlight. This work provides a low-cost UVB phototherapy method with multiple thermal stimuli to enhance afterglow, which has great potential in the home treatment of psoriasis. Ca 2 GeO 4 : Gd 3+ film can continuously emit NB-UVB afterglow for more than 12 h, which can be considered as a long-term safe and portable irradiation source for psoriasis phototherapy. And after heat treatment, the NB-UVB afterglow emission of the flexible film was enhanced by three times. More importantly, short-term sunlight induced heat can significantly enhance the afterglow emission intensity of NB-UVB, indicating that the film can maintain high phototherapy efficiency when exposed to sunlight.
