The novel Ni-Si intermetallic compounds are fabricated by elemental powder metallurgy. This study explores the synthesis of a series of catalysts (Ni-Si-M, M=Co, Fe, Mn) by alloying to augment the low-temperature efficiency of CO oxidation using Ni-Si intermetallic compounds. It is found the low-temperature catalytic activity of Ni-Si-Co, Ni-Si-Fe, and Ni-Si-Mn catalysts are significantly enhanced compared to the original Ni-Si. The catalytic activity among the catalysts ranks as follows: Ni-Si-Co > Ni-Si-Fe > Ni-Si-Mn > Ni-Si. The apparent activation energy (Ea) for Ni-Si-Co was the lowest at 57.3 kJ/mol, suggesting its efficient catalytic oxidation of CO. Additionally, the addition of Co, Fe and Mn elements actually promotes the generation of Ni 2+ as the CO adsorption site in the original Ni-Si. The addition of Co element also leads to the formation of Co 2+ as the adsorption site of O 2 in the process of CO oxidation reaction. The synergistic adsorption of Ni 2+ and Co 2+ to CO and O 2 promotes the CO oxidation reaction. Additionally, the catalysts demonstrate robust long-term stability in atmospheres containing H 2 O and SO 2 , with CO conversion initially suppressed but subsequently recovering and stabilizing at over 90%. This investigation offers novel insights into enhancing the low-temperature activity and stability of catalysts.

β -galactosidase has become the most widely used bio-marker in cellular senescence, however, it is unknown whether there are same changes in β -galactosidase activity during sperm senescence. Understanding the changes in such indicator during sperm senescence is important for sperm sorting and in vitro fertilization. Herein, we developed a NIR probe Si-βGal-P by using silicon xanthene as fluorophore . Si-βGal-P showed a good affinity to β -galactosidase together with high specificity and strong anti-interference ability. And Si-βGal-P was proved to be able to assess β -galactosidase in three different replicate senescence models. Besides, Si-βGal-P could easily pass blood-brain barrier and successfully imaged the up-regulated β -galactosidase activity in 34-week-old mouse brain. In addition, Si-βGal-P was successfully applied to hydrogen peroxide-induced premature sperm and visualized the up-regulated β -galactosidase activity for the first time, providing sperm senescence with a valid labeling tool.

The binder acts a pivotal part in determining the mechanical and electrochemical performances of lithium-ion battery electrodes. Herein, a series of water-soluble Si anode binders based on carboxymethyl chitosan (C-Cs) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is developed. Water-soluble C-Cs
and aqueous emulsion SBR solution are mixed to form C-Cs/SBR binders. The physical properties of the modified Si electrode are investigated through electrolyte swelling test, peeling test, and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical strength provided to Cu foils and active substances
by the C-Cs/SBR binder is higher than that produced by C-Cs. This performance can effectively reduce the stress/strain caused by the drastic volume change of the Si anodes during repeated uses and improve the electrochemical property of lithium-ion batteries. The initial thicknesses of the
Si electrodes with polyvinylidene fluoride, C-Cs, and C-Cs/SBR20 binders are approximately 7.1, 7.2, and 6.9 µm, respectively. After 100 cycles, their initial thicknesses increase to 11.2, 12.4, and 7.2 µm and correspond to expansions of 57.8%, 72.2%, and 4.3%, respectively.
The discharge capacity of Si electrodes containing C-Cs/SBR20 binder reaches to 1340 mAh·g−1 when the current density is 4 A·g−1, and reserves to be 1020 mAh·g−1 after undergoing 400 cycles of repeated use at
500 mA·g−1.

A novel method was developed to successfully prepare mesoporous Si/C nanocomposites with yolk–shell structures (MSi@C). Different from the reported methods, this approach was unique, straightforward and easily scaled up. A plausible mechanism for the formation of MSi@C nanocomposites was proposed, which was in accordance with the results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When the mixture of mesoporous Si (M-Si) and citric acid was heated up, the volume of air adsorbed by the M-Si expanded, and the viscoelastic citric acid layers inflated just like balloons, directly leading to the formation of the yolk–shell structured MSi@C nanocomposites during the carbonization. The MSi@C nanocomposites possessed an M-Si core with diameter ∼150 nm and a carbon shell with diameter ∼230 nm. Such nano and mesoporous structure combined with voids between the M-Si core and carbon shell not only provides enough space for the volume expansion of M-Si during lithiation, but also accommodates the mechanical stresses/strains caused by the volume inflation and contraction. Moreover, partial graphitization of the carbon contributed to the improved electrical conductivity and rate performance of MSi@C. As a result, the prepared MSi@C exhibited an initial reversible capacity of 2599.1 mA h g−1 and maintained 1264.7 mA h g−1 even after 150 cycles at 100 mA g−1, with high coulombic efficiency (CE) above 99% (based on the weight of M-Si in the electrode). Therefore, this work provided an alternative method to fabricate yolk–shell nanostructured materials with great potential as anode materials for lithium ion batteries.

The silicon (Si) based materials with robust structural adaptability and abundant Li + transportation pathway have attracted great attentions due to their enviable high capacity and long lifespan. However, the severe structural collapse and intrinsic low conductivity hinder its practical applications. In this work, the mild magnesiothermic reduction (MMR) is exploited for the scalable fabrication of spongy-like porous silicon (NC/SP-Si) using rice husk derived Mg 2 Si and SiO 2 as the reductant and reactant, respectively. Benefiting from the buffering effect of MMR, the structural collapse is effectively avoided and spherical-lamellar symbiotic Si sponge is successfully constructed, resulting in fast-ion Li + conducting channels and robust high mechanical flexibility. Importantly, ultrathin nitrogen doped carbon layers derived from chitosan further boost the intrinsic low conductivity of Si and prevent the undesirable interface side reactions. When utilized as anodes for lithium ion batteries, the NC/SP-Si delivers a high capacity of 1282 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . Even at 1 A g −1 , the electrode delivers a capacity of 710.6 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles. The ex-situ characterizations demonstrate that the ingenious spongy Si and heteroatom doped carbon layers can effectively enhance the accommodation to volume expansion, provide multilevel fast Li + conducting channels, and accelerate the formation of LiF-rich solid electrolyte interface films. Encouragingly, the assembled NCM811‖NC/SP-Si full cell shows excellent electrochemical performance after 400 cycles with a high energy density of 555.8 Wh kg −1 . This work reveals the significance of constructing robust multilevel Li + conducting channels and regulating stable LiF-rich SEI in improving the performance of Si, which provides a new perspective for boosting the large-scale application of biomass derived Si based anodes.

The severe volume expansion (~300%) of silicon (Si) anodes during cycling causes structural deterioration and rapid capacity loss, thereby limiting their practical application. Designing effective polymer binders is therefore crucial for addressing this challenge. Commonly used binders, such as PAA and CMC-SBR, mainly rely on physical entanglement or reversible hydrogen bonding and thus lack sufficient mechanical strength and adhesion to accommodate the large volume changes of Si and maintain long-term electrode stability. In this study, we designed a dynamic-covalent three-dimensional binder network, denoted DAH-c-IDA, to improve the cycling stability of Si anodes. The binder was prepared by grafting adhesive dopamine (DA) onto the biopolymer hyaluronic acid (HA), followed by covalent cross-linking with iminodiacetic acid (IDA). This design combines a robust covalent ester network with abundant dynamic supramolecular interactions. The covalent framework provides the mechanical strength required to confine Si particles, whereas the reversible dynamic bonds dissipate cyclic stress and reduce irreversible damage to the electrode architecture. By optimizing the degree of cross-linking, an appropriate balance between structural stability and adhesive flexibility was achieved at a DAH:IDA mass ratio of 2:1, giving the binder a high Young's modulus, damage tolerance, and strong interfacial adhesion. Consequently, the Si electrode fabricated with the optimized DAH-c-IDA binder achieved an initial coulombic efficiency of 94.39% and delivered a high reversible capacity of 1637 mAh g −1 after 580 cycles at a high current density of 2 A g −1 , while maintaining cycling operation for 800 cycles. This work demonstrates that integrating covalent cross-linking with dynamic supramolecular interactions within a 3D network is an effective strategy for developing advanced binders for durable, high-capacity Si-based lithium-ion batteries.

The in-situ reconstruction of catalysts has increasingly garnered research interest due to its pivotal role in modulating selectivity and improving activity. The surface reconstruction of group IVA element-based compounds under reaction conditions has been rarely investigated, despite wide application as active sites or carriers in catalyst fabrication. In this work, the heavy-period element in group IVA exhibits high activity in the electrocatalytic reduction of formaldehyde (HCHO) with H 2 O, which is attributed to the accelerated proton-coupled electron transfer by strong HCHO adsorption. Remarkably, the proper reconstruction of metallic Si to Si-OH during the electrolysis accounts for the active surface, enabling a highly selective formation of ethylene glycol (EG). Competitive long-term stability (1500 h) is demonstrated at –200 mA cm –2 with a low-resistance Si sheet as the cathode, which highlights the industrialization prospects of this alternative route for EG production.

The construction of advanced catalysts with well-defined structural properties is crucial for the selective hydrogenation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in modern fossil fuel upgrading. In this work, a PtPd alloy catalyst supported on Si-modified Al2O3 nanosheet (Pt-Pd/A-Si-12) is synthesized, which exhibits three key structural advantages: a high specific surface area (422 m2 g–1), a large pore volume (0.8 cm3 g–1), and a surface enriched with finely modulated weak acid sites. Systematic characterization reveals that the hierarchical porous structure not only promotes uniform dispersion of active metal species but also facilitates mass transfer of macromolecular reactants, leading to a diffusion rate 1.47 times that of the unmodified Pt-Pd/A-Si-0 catalyst. Moreover, the tailored weak acid sites play a dual role: enhancing the metal–support interaction through electronic effects while concurrently creating a highly selective hydrogenation environment. As a result, the Pt-Pd/A-Si-12 catalyst achieves nearly complete conversion (∼100%) and a selectivity up to 93% under 250 °C and 5 MPa H2, along with significantly improved stability and high sulfur resistance. This study provides fundamental insights into the structure–performance relationship in selective hydrogenation and offers an effective strategy for the design of efficient industrial catalysts.

Wide-bandgap (WBG) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for tandem applications, despite potential instability induced by halogen components. Formamidinium-cesium (FACs)-based perovskites represent as an intrinsically stable WBG system due to their low bromine-to-lead ratio and the absence of thermally unstable methylammonium. However, the performance of FACs-based WBG perovskites is highly dependent on achieving precise control over the formation dynamics. Here, we employ in-situ characterization to reveal that the key to this control lies in the evolution of the intermediate phase and propose a pathway-priming strategy. By strategically guiding the early formation of the CsPbX 3 intermediate phases, the strategy in turn templates and accelerates the subsequent transformation to the desired α-phase. The primed pathway yields a more uniform and complete phase transition, leading to enhanced film homogeneity. As a result, we demonstrate highly efficient 1.67 eV WBG PSCs with an efficiency exceeding 23%, along with excellent long-term operating stability maintaining 90% initial performance for 800 hours under continuous light stress. Furthermore, semitransparent WBG PSC achieve efficiencies of 20.91% (0.1 cm 2 ) and 19.67% (1.0 cm 2 ), corresponding to a four-terminal perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells with an efficiency of 31.04% (1.0 cm 2 ), highlighting their potential for high-performance tandem photovoltaics.

In this study, Si-alloyed porous TiAl₃ intermetallic compounds were synthesized through an efficient and rapid self-exothermic reaction. The gas permeability and pore structure of the samples were quantitatively analyzed using 3D-X-ray microtomography (3D-XRM). Combined with a self-made "visual window" and real-time temperature curves, the entire green compact exhibited a distinct and uniform exothermic behavior at every moment. The addition of Si element transformed the intense solid-liquid reaction into a relatively gentle two-step sintering process. The results indicated that an appropriate amount of Si can significantly enhance the uniformity of pore structure and increase the mechanical properties by nearly five times. Meanwhile, the oxidation kinetics curves revealed that the oxidation process was divided into an initial rapid oxidation stage and a subsequent slow oxidation stage, and the mass gain ratio of the samples gradually decreased with the increase of Si content. Furthermore, a dense Al₂O₃ oxide layer can form on the surface of skeleton at high temperatures, effectively hindered the inward diffusion of oxygen and provided a feasible design concept for achieving porous TiAl₃-based composites with high porosity and excellent performance.

Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) enable exceptional light harvesting via localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR), yet their photocatalytic utility is limited by ultrafast charge recombination and surface contamination from synthesis. Here, we overcome these challenges by applying the surface chemistry of silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) to synthesize hybrid nanostructures of uncoated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The alkyl-passivated SiNC surface acts as a reductive template, guiding the in-situ formation of clean, interfacially coupled AgNPs while protecting the SiNC core from oxidation. This tailored architecture leverages a synegiestic mechanism to enhance AgNP plasmon resonance, drive efficient hot-electron transfer and improve charge carrier separation. The resulting Ag@SiNC hybrid achieves improved CO 2 reduction performance, with a CO yield of 1,552 μmol/g and near 100% selectivity under visible light irradiation. This work establishes surface-engineered SiNCs as a versatile platform for designing high-performance plasmonic–semiconductor photocatalysts.
