Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) fabricated silicon carbide (SiC) has great potential for optical mirrors and semiconductor equipment because of its advantages in lightweight design and complex geometry fabrication. However, the resulting substrates still suffer from insufficient densification, limited purity, and poor surface quality. Dense SiC coatings are therefore usually deposited to form a functional surface layer, and the strong interfacial adhesion is essential for reliable service. To address this issue, this study innovatively proposes a surface patterning strategy for additively manufactured SiC substrates. Groove patterns were introduced onto the substrates, and the effects of groove width and spacing on coating adhesion strength, nanomechanical properties, crystallographic orientation, and interfacial fracture behavior were systematically investigated. The results show that decreasing groove width improves both coating adhesion strength and nanomechanical properties, while adhesion strength first increases and then decreases with increasing spacing. The sample with a groove width of 0.4 mm and a spacing of 1.5 mm achieved the highest adhesion strength of 20.7 MPa, which is 4.3 times that of the non-patterned substrate. Its nanomechanical properties were also significantly improved. The groove patterns favored V-shaped coating growth with preferred (111) orientation, whereas the patterned interface induced crack deflection during fracture. These combined effects contributed to the enhanced interfacial adhesion. This study provides a practical and effective strategy for improving coating adhesion in high performance SiC components.

Implantable electrochemical sensor holds great promise in the real-time monitoring of dopamine (DA) to regulate body function. However, the real application of these sensors is limited by the weak current signal of DA in the human body and the poor compatibility of the on-chip microelectronic devices. In this work, a SiC/graphene composite film was fabricated using laser chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) and employed as a DA sensor. The graphene in the porous nanoforest-like SiC framework offered efficient channels for electronic transmission, leading to an enhanced electron transfer rate and consequently an increased current response for DA detection. The three-dimensional (3D) porous network also facilitated the exposure of more catalytic active sites toward DA oxidation. Besides, the wide distribution of graphene in the nanoforest-like SiC films reduced the interfacial resistance of the charge transfer. The SiC/graphene composite film exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward DA oxidation with a low detection limit of 0.11 μM and a high sensitivity of 0.86 μA·μM–1·cm–2. The film electrode also showed a wide linear response for DA in 0.5–78 μM, along with good selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility. Furthermore, the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and live–dead assays revealed that the film is also biocompatible for biomedical applications. Therefore, the nanoforest-like SiC/graphene composite film via the CVD process enables a promising candidate for an integrated miniature DA biosensor with high detection performance.

In order to increase the hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of nickel-based coatings, pure nickel is often co-electrodeposited with silicon carbide (SiC) particles. However, SiC particles tend to agglomerate and precipitate in the bath, which reduces the amounts of nanoparticles and causes nonuniformity. Herein, we solve these problems by using binary non-ionic surfactants (Span 80 and Tween 60) to effectively disperse SiC particles (binary-SiC) in the bath, which suppresses nanoparticles agglomeration and leads to uniformly distributed SiC particles in the composite coatings. In comparison to the Ni/SiC coatings electrodeposited from the commonly used SDS-modified SiC, the coatings prepared with binary-SiC (Ni/binary-SiC) show finer crystallization and a smoother surface. In addition, the Ni/binary-SiC coatings exhibit higher hardness (556 Hv) and wear resistance (2.95 mg cm−2). Furthermore, higher corrosion resistance is also achieved by the Ni/binary-SiC coatings.Keywords:Ni/SiC composite coatings;co-electrodeposition;binary non-ionic surfactants;nanoparticle agglomeration;wear resistance

The high gas permeance of ceramic membranes is the most important indicator of hot-gas filtration. Ceramic membranes made of fibers show significant potential for filtering dust-laden gases owing to their high porosity and high gas permeance. A novel method is proposed for preparing a SiC fiber separation layer on a rigid ceramic support that endows the membrane with a high porosity. However, the interfacial adhesion between the support and separation layers was low as there were insufficient connection points. Therefore, a solvothermal method was proposed for the in-situ vertical growth of TiO 2 nanocords on the surface of a SiC support (SiC–TiO 2 ). Next, a SiC fiber separation layer was deposited on the SiC–TiO 2 support to improve the interfacial adherence. The fabrication parameters of the SiC fiber layer, such as the solid content of the coating slurry and sintering procedure of the separating layer, were investigated in detail. At a SiC fiber content of 6 wt%, spray-coating times of 2, and sintering temperature of 1150 °C, a complete fiber layer was successfully deposited on the rigid ceramic support. The resulting membrane had a thickness of 100 μm, porosity of 91%, average pore diameter of 6.8 μm, and gas permeance of 440 m 3 ·m −2 ·h −1 ·kPa −1 . In the filtration of dust-laden gas containing SiO 2 as simulated dust (average particle size, 0.3 μm), the rejection rate was >99.9%; further, after four cycles of filtration–backwashing, the pressure drop was <0.82 kPa. The outlet dust content was less than 0.1 mg m −3 . Moreover, this membrane exhibited superior filtration ability at 500 °C. The findings of this study can aid the fabrication of ceramic fiber membranes with a high gas permeance and high interfacial adherence for industrial applications.

Polymer-derived SiC fibers are critical structural and functional materials for high-temperature applications, whose service performance can be further improved by introduction of certain heterogeneous elements. Herein, flexible and thermal stable SiC fiber mats were prepared from boron-doped polyaluminocarbosilane (PACS) precursor by electro-spinning, curing and pyrolysis. Two boron-containing compounds o-carborane (oCB) and phenylboronic acid (PBA) were used as the boron sources and their effects on the properties and structure of the SiC fiber mats were investigated. The introduced oCB and PBA had obviously improved the ceramic yield of the cured fiber mats and the flexibility of the SiC fiber mats. However, PBA introduced more boron, but also more oxygen, which leaded to formation of more amorphous SiC x O y phases. Although only a small amount of boron was introduced by oCB, a more significant improvement in the thermal stability of the SiC fiber mat was obtained. This work provided a practical approach for fabrication of flexible and thermally stable SiC fiber mats.

Ceramic-based absorbing composite is irreplaceable in high-temperature conditions. This work has fabricated a novel biomass–derived porous SiCnw/SiC composite for structure–function integrated electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption through selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing and carbothermal reduction. SLS processed the biomass-derived wood precursor with unique porous microstructures. The structure–function properties were controlled by changing the SiO carbothermal reduction temperatures, which facilitated the growth of SiC nanowires for effective EMW absorption. The 3D printed porous SiCnw/SiC composite shows efficient EMW absorption abilities with a minimum reflection loss of −49.01 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.1 GHz. The bulk density and flexural strength of porous SiCnw/SiC composite are respectively 0.73 ± 0.001 g/cm3 and 6.21 ± 0.66 MPa. Despite a high open porosity of 75.58 ± 0.31%, the porous SiCnw/SiC composite demonstrates excellent thermal conductivities of 3.21∼4.99 W/(m·K) and superior fire-resistant ability. The 3D printed SiCnw/SiC composite integrates structure and functions, indicating wide applications in specific harsh environments.

Hierarchical porous silicon carbide (SiC) structures with total porosity in a wide range of 37.82 %− 94.34 % were achieved by combining robocasting and alkali-induced starch gelatinization technique. (i) 50 µm-2 mm sized pores, with porosities of 22.33 %− 82.13 %, were created by robocasting. (ii) 1–140 µm pores, with porosities of 20.20 %− 68.21 %, were induced by the starch template. Additionally, we firstly introduced an alkali-induced starch gelatinization technique to the gel inks for robocasting, which promoted its elastic properties (storage modulus and shear yield stress) and prolonged its preservation time to 3–7 days. The gelatinized starch granules were also used as binder, which facilitated high-velocity (3–20 mm/s) extrusion of the inks through fine (150–800 µm) nozzles. The porous SiC structures with two scales of porosity are promising for wide applications such as porous burners, liquid and gas filters, catalyst supports and so on.

Flexible polymer composites with high dielectric constants and low dielectric losses at high frequencies are highly desired in microwave and RF applications. However, a high dielectric constant is often obtained at the expense of flexibility because a high loading of filler is needed. In this work, we synthesize a core-shell structured 1D filler by coating high-dielectric-constant PbTiO 3 onto the surface of low-thermal-expansion-coefficient SiC nanofibers , which are then incorporated into the epoxy matrix together with BaTiO 3 nanoparticles to form the multi-phase BaTiO 3 /SiC@PbTiO 3 /epoxy composite film . A high dielectric constant (35 at 100 Hz and 20 at 5 GHz) and a low dielectric loss (0.023 at 100 Hz and 0.13 at 5 GHz) are achieved as the filling content of SiC@PbTiO 3 and BaTiO 3 is 5.24 wt% and 80 wt%, respectively. Prediction models of the effective dielectric constant of polymer-based composites reveal that a continuous polarization network is constructed in the composites owing to the physical contact between BaTiO 3 and PbTiO 3 . The construction of the multi-phase filler provides a feasible way to effectively adjust and improve the dielectric properties of polymer-based composite films.

Owing to excellent high temperature resistance, high porosity and light weight, SiC aerogels possess great application prospects in thermal insulation and adsorption. However, poor mechanical properties of SiC aerogels, such as brittleness and non-bendability, hinder its application; it is still a challenge to improve and regulate the mechanical properties of SiC aerogels. Here, for the first time, we propose a micromechanical design strategy to prepare flexible SiC nanowire/mullite fiber composite aerogels (SMCAs). By optimizing the aspect ratio of the skeleton fibers to regulate the stress state of microstructures, the maximum compressive stress of that SMCAs could bear can be tuned systematically from 1.2 kPa to 1254.8 kPa, spanning 3 orders of magnitude. More importantly, thanks to its micromechanical design, SMCAs can withstand up to 80% compression deformation and up to 90° bending deformation. The present work provides a new idea for the regulation of mechanical properties of ceramic aerogels.

The preparation of a ZrB 2 -SiC coating-matrix integrated C/C composite was achieved by a slurry method and precursor infiltration and pyrolysis. The obtained composites consisted of a SiC outer layer, a ZrB 2 -SiC inner layer and a C/C-ZrB 2 -SiC substrate. Compared with a composite without the ZrB 2 -SiC layer, the mass ablation rates of the composite were reduced by 14.8 %, 12.0 %, and 19.4 %, and the linear ablation rates were reduced by 41.3 %, 28.2 %, and 14 %, respectively, after ablation under an oxyacetylene flame with a heat flux of 4.18 MW/m 2 for 60 s, 120 s, and 300 s. During the ablation process, the SiC outer layer played a role in reducing the heating rate and surface temperature and promoting the sintering of ZrO 2 so that the oxide layer avoided peeling off under large thermal stress. The ZrB 2 -SiC inner layer acted as an oxygen, heat and flow barrier, reducing the oxidation rate of the substrate.

In this work, C f /(CrZrHfNbTa)C–SiC high-entropy ceramic matrix composites with good load-bearing, electromagnetic shielding and ablation resistance were designed and reported for the first time. The composites were fabricated by an efficient combined processing of slurry infiltration lamination (SIL) and precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP). Density and porosity of the as-fabricated composites are 2.72 g/cm 3 and 12.44 vol.%, respectively, and the flexural strength is 185 ± 13 MPa. Due to the carbon fiber reinforcement with high conductivity and strong reflection, and high-entropy (CrZrHfNbTa)C ceramic matrix with strong absorbability, the total Electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (SE T ) of the composites with a thickness of 3 mm are as high as 88.2 dB and 90 dB respectively in X-band and Ku-band. This means that higher than 99.999999 % electromagnetic shielding is achieved at 8–18 GHz, showing excellent electromagnetic shielding performance. The C f /(CrZrHfNbTa)C–SiC composites also present excellent ablation resistance, with the linear and mass ablation rates of 0.9 µm/s and 1.82 mg/s after ablation at the heat flux of 5 MW/m 2 for 300 s (∼2450 °C). This work opens a new insight for the synergistic design of structural and functional integrated materials with load-bearing, electromagnetic shielding and ablation resistance, etc.

The pressureless-sintered silicon carbide ceramic with and without surface texturing was joined with CaO-Al 2 O 3 -MgO-TiO 2 -SiO 2 glass filler. The experimental results showed that without texturing applied to SiC substrates, the shear strength of SiC joints was 40.8 ± 6.3 MPa, with failure occurring at the interlayer. Unfilled regions in the interlayer limited the shear strength of the joints. When texturing was applied to SiC substrates, SiO 2 layer was formed on the surface of substrates due to high-temperature oxidation, which subsequently promoted the wettability of filler on substrates. The textured grooves on SiC substrates could be filled with glass material during joining process. The shear strength of textured SiC joints was 69.3 ± 9.9 MPa with a mixed-mode failure when the direction of shear load was perpendicular to the texturing direction. The better wettability, larger joining area, and interlocking structure between the glass filler and substrates enhanced the shear strength of textured joints.
