Sodium alginate/chitosan-based intelligent bilayer film with antimicrobial activity for pork preservation and freshness monitoring

Shenghui Cao,Shuo Wang,Qingqing Wang,Gang Lin,Baolong Niu,Ruijie Guo,Hong Yan,Huifang Wang

A pH-sensitive bilayer film with antioxidant and antibacterial activities was successfully prepared by anchoring anthocyanins (ACNs) with sodium alginate (SA) as the sensing inner layer and incorporating TiO 2 in chitosan (CS) as the protective outer layer. ACNs in the inner layer were immobilized under acidic conditions while released under alkaline conditions because of the pH sensitivity of SA molecules. The incorporation of TiO 2 improved the color stability of the ACNs, and the film exhibited a wide range of color variations at pH 2–13 with ΔE >5. FT-IR confirmed the existence of hydrogen bonds among the components, and the tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB) of the film reached 24.32 MPa and 38.58%, respectively. Moreover, the bactericidal rates of the film towards E. coli and S. aureus were 99.23% and 97.49%, respectively. The bilayer film could extend the pork's shelf life for 40 and 96 h at 20 °C and 4 °C, and monitor the pork quality in real-time. Therefore, the ACNs@SA + CS/TiO 2 bilayer film is promising for meat preservation and freshness monitoring.

Sodium alginate based skin-core fibers with profoundly enhanced moisture-electric generation performance and their multifunctionality

Rui Zhang,Meijie Qu,Hai Wang,Shuhui Li,Yutong Song,Ping Tang,Yuezhen Bin

Moist-electric generation as a sustainable energy acquisition technology exhibits great potential to solve energy and environmental problems. However, the simultaneous achievement of flexibility, continuous electric generation and high output performance of moist-electric fibers remains a great challenge. In this work, a coaxial fiber based moist-electric generator (FMEG) was prepared by means of a facile and continuous coaxial wet spinning technology. The skin-core structure, in which sodium alginate (SA)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) formed a moisture absorbing and oxygenated group containing a skin and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) core, endowed this FMEG with the strong capability of electric charge motion in radial and axial directions of the fiber, which was assisted by the enhanced moisture migration from the skin to the core layer. Meanwhile, the MWCNT core and an external metal wire formed a pair of asymmetric electrodes when SA/PEDOT-MWCNT coaxial fibers were assembled to be a MEG device. This provided a significant built-in electric field which contributed to additional impetus for proton migration. Consecutive and stable output power with an extremely high level of output power density of 5.56 W m−2 (RH = 61–64%), output voltage of 1.2 V, and output current of 21.0 μA was generated by a piece of coaxial fiber of only 1 cm in length, which is highly superior to those in most reported studies. At the same time, the SA/PEDOT:PSS-MWCNT skin-core fiber exhibited multifunctionality in thermoelectric and Joule heating properties. The excellent green power generation ability of the coaxial fiber is undoubtedly highly competitive in the field of wearable and sustainable power generation textiles and devices.

Gelatin/sodium alginate multilayer composite film crosslinked with green tea extract for active food packaging application

Peng Shan,Kun Wang,Fuyou Yu,Lunzhao Yi,Liping Sun,Hui Li

With the increasing environmental concern and consumption demand for fresh food of human being, development of biodegradable and active food packaging films is highly desirable. In this study, an active multilayer food packaging film was fabricated using gelatin (GEL) and sodium alginate (ALG) as matrix biopolymer , green tea extract (GTE) derived from green tea waste as cross-linking agent and active ingredient. The film-forming method was based on simple layer-by-layer (LBL) casting. SEM and FTIR demonstrated the good compatibility of the film-forming substances and the formation of a more compact LBL multilayer composite film due to occurrence of increased intermolecular hydrogen bonding , thereby improving UV-shielding, mechanical strength , water vapor and oxygen barrier, water resistance and thermal stability. The multilayer composite film also exhibited high antioxidant and antibacterial activity . Particularly, slow release of GTE from multilayer composite film was observed. Moreover, the preservation study demonstrated that obtained active film could effectively maintain postharvest quality of Boletus bicolor Peck and extend shelf-life to 7 days under 4 °C storage, indicating its promising application potential for food preservation.

Preparation and properties of environmentally benign waterborne polyurethane composites from sodium-alginate-modified nano calcium carbonate

Yuhang Yang,Guanghua Pan,Xing Li,Wenqin Xu,Nanchun Chen,QingLin Xie

Well-dispersed inorganic nanoparticles in organic polymers are critical in the preparation of high-performance nanocomposites. This study prepared a series of waterborne polyurethane (WPU)/calcium carbonate nanocomposites using the solution blending method. Next, FT-IR, TG-DTG and XRD tests were carried out to confirm that the biopolymer sodium alginate (SA) was successfully encapsulated on the surface of the calcium carbonate nanoparticles, and that SA achieved satisfactory surface modification of the calcium carbonate nanoparticles. The Zeta and ultraviolet (UV) absorbance test results reveal that SA-modified nano calcium carbonate (MCC) had good dispersion stability in water. The effects of the MCC dosage on the composite mechanical properties, thermal stability, and cross-sectional morphology observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the water resistance of the nanocomposite were investigated. The results reveal that the incorporation of 3wt% of MCC in WPU had stable distribution, which led to a 54% increase in the tensile strength of the nanocomposite, while maintaining excellent elongation at break (2187%) and increasing the maximum decomposition temperature to 419.6 °C. Importantly, the improved water resistance facilitates the application of this environmentally benign composite material in humid environments.

Development and characterization of pH responsive sodium alginate hydrogel containing metal-phenolic network for anthocyanin delivery

Shuifang Mao,Yanming Ren,Shiguo Chen,Donghong Liu,Jinhu Tian,Xingqian Ye

Favorable hydrogels can be used as a material to deliver bioactive molecules and improve the stability of bioactive substances, while their safety needs to be improved. In this study, protocatechuic acid (PCA) and Fe 3+ were rapidly self-assembled to form a metal-phenolic network under different pH conditions, and then sodium alginate (SA) was added to prepare the SA/PCA/Fe hydrogel without adding other chemical reagents. The structural characteristic of SA/PCA/Fe hydrogel was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the structures of SA/PCA/Fe hydrogels prepared at different pH values were significantly different. The texture analysis, water-holding measurement and rheological analysis indicated that the SA/PCA/Fe hydrogel showed higher gel strength, water holding capacity and storage modulus. Thermogravimetric analysis illuminated that the SA/PCA/Fe hydrogel enhanced the thermal stability of free anthocyanins through encapsulating anthocyanins. Moreover, in vitro simulated digestion experiment revealed that SA/PCA/Fe hydrogel could control the release of anthocyanins in the simulated gastrointestinal tract. To sum up, this present study might provide a safer and feasible way for the delivery of bioactive substances.

Enhancing encapsulation of curcumin by pH-driven and sodium alginate blending with ovalbumin as a carrier

Hanyu Li,Minghui Zhao,Sijie Zhou,Huajiang Zhang,Jing Wang,Ning Xia,Yujia Liu,Shihui Hua,Guixin Tan

Curcumin is a hydrophobic polyphenol with various health benefits, but its poor water solubility and stability limit its application in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In this study, a pH-driven method was developed to prepare ovalbumin (OVA)-curcumin nanocomplexes without organic solvents, reducing the environmental impact. The results showed that curcumin was encapsulated in OVA with a high efficiency of over 95% and remained in an amorphous state within the protein molecules. Molecular docking and spectroscopic analyses revealed that curcumin was mainly bound and stabilized by hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions in the hydrophobic core of OVA. The binding strength of the intermediate stage of the pH-driven method was stronger than that of the final stage, due to the exposure of OVA molecular binding sites and the involvement of electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, the potential of polysaccharide blending to enhance the stability of the nanocomplexes was investigated. The results showed that sodium alginate effectively enhanced the photostability and thermal stability of the OVA-curcumin nanocomplexes by co-solubilization and electrostatic complex formation. In addition, simulated in vitro digestion also demonstrated that the pH-driven method combined with polysaccharide blending increased the bioaccessibility of curcumin in nanocomplexes from 17.79% to 52.54%. Therefore, the pH-driven method coupled with polysaccharide blending ensures the encapsulation and stabilization of hydrophobic bioactive substances for use in their delivery systems to improve bioaccessibility.

Preparation and Application of a Natural Microspheric Soil Conditioner Based on Gelatin, Sodium Alginate, and Zeolite

Wentong Lu,Hongyan Tang,Yakun Li,Jincheng Wang,Jibo Sun

In this work, a type of natural microspheric soil conditioner, PZ(Fe)/GL-SA-Urea, was prepared by emulsion cross-linking and sharp-hole coagulation bath methods. Gelatin (GL) and sodium alginate (SA) were selected as the outermost shell, and the prepared FeOOH was loaded on pickling zeolite (PZ) to improve the loading ratio of urea. The embedding performance and sustained release behavior of the microspheres showed that when the concentration of urea was 1.5%, the embedding rate reached 37.63%, and the cumulative release rate reached 68% within 100 h, indicating that the microsphere had good encapsulation and sustained release abilities. In addition, the water retention and swelling behaviors of the microspheres can be obtained by controlling the content of added GL. Furthermore, antibacterial and planting experiments revealed that the microspheres had excellent antibacterial effects and can effectively improve soil quality and promote crop growth. Therefore, the PZ(Fe)/GL-SA-Urea microsphere soil conditioners possess good application properties and provide fresh solutions to improve soil quality and raise crop yields.

A self-supported sodium alginate composite hydrogel membrane and its performance in filtering heavy metal ions

Rong Cai,Ying Chen,Jiawei Hu,Jinli Xiong,Jiawei Lu,Jiating Liu,Xiaobo Tan,Wenyong Liu,Yueyun Zhou,Yi Chen

A novel self-supported polysaccharide based hydrogel membrane was prepared by adding cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and micron-sized biochar (BC) into sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel with in-situ free water evaporation (“cooking”) process and ionic crosslinking, in which the polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as a pore-forming agent. Herein, CNF can not only enhance the mechanical property of the matrix, but also assist the homogeneous dispersion of BC. As a result, the prepared membrane had a maximum tensile strength of up to 5.69 MPa, which was more than 2–3 times higher than the previously reported self-supported hydrogel membranes. The flux reached 61.5 Lm −2  h −1 under 0.35 MPa pressure, and the anti-fouling property was also excellent due to its hydrophilicity . In filtration tests, the rejection of Cr (III) and Cr (VI) of 50 mg/l could reach 96.8 % and 91.4 %, respectively. Moreover, the mechanism behind the exceptional high rejection for both cationic and anionic heavy metal was delineated.

Characterization and Application in Packaging Grease of Gelatin–Sodium Alginate Edible Films Cross-Linked by Pullulan

Shuo Li,Min Fan,Shanggui Deng,Ningping Tao

Gelatin–sodium alginate-based edible films cross-linked with pullulan were prepared using the solution casting method. FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated the existence of hydrogen bonding interactions between the components, and scanning electron microscopy observed the component of the films, revealing electrostatic interactions and thus explaining the differences in the properties of the blend films. The best mechanical properties and oxygen barrier occurred at a 1:1 percentage of pullulan to gelatin (GP11) with sodium alginate dosing for modification. Furthermore, GP11 demonstrated the best thermodynamic properties by DSC analysis, the highest UV barrier (94.13%) and the best oxidation resistance in DPPH tests. The results of storage experiments using modified edible films encapsulated in fresh fish liver oil showed that GP11 retarded grease oxidation by inhibiting the rise in peroxide and anisidine values, while inappropriate amounts of pullulan had a pro-oxidative effect on grease. The correlation between oil oxidation and material properties was investigated, and water solubility and apparent color characteristics were also assessed. Keywords:pullulan;gelatin;sodium alginate;oil oxidation;edible film;grease packaging

Solid phase synthesis of oxidized sodium alginate-tobramycin conjugate and its application for infected wound healing

Limei Liang,Tao Liu,Qianqian Ouyang,Sidong Li,Chengpeng Li

Although sodium alginate possesses excellent biocompatibility, moisture retention and easy availability, it cannot be directly applied for infected wound treatment. Herein, a solid phase synthesis strategy was proposed to fabricate oxidized sodium alginate-tobramycin conjugate (OSA-TOB) for anti-infection dressing development. 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra indicated that the oxidization process does not change the ratio of β-D-mannuronic acid (M) / α-L-guluronic acid (G) in OSA and the oxidization reaction shows no stereoselectivity . Elemental analysis disclosed that the graft ratio of tobramycin in OSA-TOB is 13.8 %. Antibacterial test indicated that OSA-TOB can effectively inhibit four prevalent pathogenic bacterial S.epidermidis , P. aeruginosa , S. aureus and E. coli via a different antibacterial mechanism compared to the original TOB. Hemolysis and cytotoxicity assays shown that OSA-TOB have superior hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. Infected wound healing assay shown that the healing rate of OSA-TOB is the highest. Further analysis indicated that OSA-TOB can reduce the local inflammatory response, accelerate the form of epithelium and collagen deposition. In conclusions, OSA-TOB synthesized in solid phase can be potentially applied as a promising anti-infection wound dressing.

Zhen Qin,Xiangyang Chen,Yuhuan Lv,Biao Zhao,Xiaohui Fang,Kai Pan

The emerging wearable electronics promote the rapid development of flexible piezoresistive sensors. However, it remains a big challenge to develop a high-performance piezoresistive sensor with high sensitivity, wide pressure range, and stable output. Here, an lightweight (17.33 mg cm −3 ) cellulose acetate nanofiber/sodium alginate synergistically enhanced MXene composite aerogel is fabricated through a liquid nitrogen-assisted unidirectional-freezing strategy. The conductive MXene-based aerogel possesses excellent mechanical performance and high compressive strength (16 kPa). Importantly, the unique synergies endow the aerogel assembled piezoresistive sensor with an ultra-high sensitivity up to 114.55 kPa −1 in a wide pressure range up to 21.78 kPa, and it can withstand more than 24,000 cycles of compression. More interestingly, the prepared sensor can be used to realize real-time monitoring of various human activities and developed as a wireless device to transmit information. The unparalleled sensing performance endows the MXene composite aerogel with a broad application prospect in the field of flexible intelligent wearable devices.
