2D MXene are showing great prospects for EMI shielding by virtue of abundant surface functional groups and outstanding metallic electrical conductivity . However, it remains a great challenge to simultaneously achieve flexible, lightweight and high stability in MXene shielding materials due to inferior mechanical strength and poor oxidation stability. Gelation paves up an effective and facile strategy to develop highly stable and conductive 3D porous Ti 3 C 2 T x architectures. Herein, super-flexible and highly conductive H-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite films with 3D macro-assemblies for EMI shielding were fabricated through a gelation-densification process initiated by hydrochloric acids, and two-step vacuum-assisted filtration followed by freeze-casting approach. The obtained nanocomposite films manifest satisfactory mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 116.51 MPa, excellent EMI SE of 55.14 dB, superior SSE/t and high EMI SE retention after 5000 cycles of bending deformation. In addition, the as-prepared nanocomposite papers demonstrate outstanding thermal management performances such as rapid response time, high Joule heating temperature (118 °C) at low applied voltage (2.5 V) and eminent working stability (4000 s).

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising energy materials due to their considerable theoretical capacity, but they also suffer from inherent poor electrical conductivity and agglomeration problems. In this study, a composite electrode material with a unique structure was synthesized by in situ growth of nanoscale NiVAl-LDH on the surface of few-layered Ti3C2Tx–MXene. The strong interfacial connection and enhanced electronic coupling between the two components enhance the structural stability and electrical conductivity of the material, significantly enhancing its redox kinetics. Moreover, this composite structure effectively prevents the aggregation and restacking of Ti3C2Tx–MXene and NiVAl-LDH nanosheets, ensuring the complete exposure of active sites. Demonstrating exceptional electrochemical capabilities, the composite electrode showcases a distinct capacitance of 186.7 mA h g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Furthermore, it maintains an impressive 84.7% of its capacitance after enduring 5000 charge–discharge cycles at a high current density of 10 A g−1. The assembled asymmetrical supercapacitor device demonstrates a respectable energy density of 51.6 W h kg−1 at a power density of 800.0 W kg−1, as well as excellent cycling stability (89.1% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g−1).

The uncontrolled release of nitrophenol and dye pollutants into water systems is an increasingly serious worldwide concern, and thus efficient wastewater treatment technologies are urgently needed. Herein we report a novel two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (Ti3C2Tx MXene) membrane modified with silver nanowires (AgNWs) by vacuum assisted filtration technology for the ultrafast nitrophenol catalysis and water purification applications. Regular and controllable membrane transport channels were constructed by stacking Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. Furthermore, the intercalation of AgNWs into the Ti3C2Tx MXene interlayer greatly enlarged the interlayer spacing, resulting in more gaps for fast and selective molecular transport. The optimized Ti3C2Tx MXene@AgNWs (M@A) membrane exhibited a water flux up to ∼191.9 L/(m2 h) while maintaining a high bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of ∼95.4%. We emphatically used M@A membranes as efficient catalysts for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and the results indicated that M@A-12% membrane exhibited the greatest catalytic reduction ability, and recycling utilization. M@A-12% membrane also had an antibacterial rate of more than 99% against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). This work provides a possibility to expand the application of 2D multifunctional M@A membranes in wastewater treatment and pollutant catalytic degradation.

The accessibility of photogenerated charge transfer channels and the activity of catalytic reaction sites are critical for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a 3D porous N-doped Ti3C2Tx MXene matrix confining Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticles (N-TCT@CZS) was fabricated via electrostatic absorption, thermal nitridation, and in situ growth processes, forming a stable heterojunction with excellent photocatalytic HER activity. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses indicated that N dopants could induce more unsaturated structures and increase the abundance of active sites, while the 3D N-TCT MXene matrix with a stable scaffold configuration and interconnected porous channels could promote charge transfer kinetics, which synergistically realizes electronic structure modulation and spatial configuration design of photocatalysts. Besides, the Cd–N bonds between the N-TCT MXene and CZS enhance the interfacial interaction and expedite the directional interfacial charge transfer, thus substantially boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Consequently, the optimal N-TCT@CZS-3 nanohybrid photocatalyst possesses a superior photocatalytic HER rate of 10.90 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 4.8 times higher than that of the pristine CZS nanoparticles. This work proposes an applicable avenue for designing and fabricating novel functional 3D MXene-supported semiconductor materials for solar energy conversion.

As the candidates for large-scale hydrogen storage , liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) exhibit evident advantages in hydrogen storage density and convenience of storage and transportation. Among them, NECZ (N-ethylcarbazole)/12H-NECZ (dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole) is considered as a typical system with the lower hydrogenation/dehydrogenation temperature. However, the low dehydrogenation efficiency restrict its commercial applications. In this work, the single-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was employed as the support to load the Pt nanoparticles for the 12H-NECZ dehydrogenation reaction. The effect of transition metals , loading amounts and morphologies of catalysts were analyzed. It was found that the 3 wt% Pt/S–Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance with 100% conversion, 91.55% selectivity of NECZ and 5.62 wt% hydrogen release amount at 453 K, 101.325 kPa for 7 h. The product distributions and kinetics analysis suggested that the elementary reaction from 4H-NECZ to NECZ was the rate-limiting step. The selectivity of NECZ is sensitive to the dehydrogenation temperature. Combined with the XRD , SEM , HRTEM , XPS , BET and FT-IR results, it could be indicated that the special two-dimension structure of S–Ti 3 C 2 T x and electronic effect between Pt and S–Ti 3 C 2 T x enhanced the dehydrogenation efficiency of 12H-NECZ. The measurements of cyclic dehydrogenation indicated that the Pt/S–Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst exhibited good stability after 42 h. This work brought a new strategy for the design of efficient catalysts using two-dimensional materials in the applications of the liquid organic storage hydrogen technology .

The advent of hydrogel-based flexible strain sensors has generated enormous research interest due to their outstanding biocompatibility. However, developing hydrogel-based strain sensors with high gauge factor, wide detection range and multifunctional integration is still challenging. Here, a novel multifunctional hydrogel-based strain sensor is composed of two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides (Ti 3 C 2 Tx MXene) and Polyacrylamide- co -Poly- N -hydroxyethylene acrylamide/Carboxy Methyl Cellulose-Fe 3+ dual network structure (PAAm-PHEMAA/CMC-Fe 3+ ) with multiple hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions. The dual network design endowed the hydrogel-based human motion sensor with fast rebound and high tensile properties , enabling it to exhibit high sensitivity (response time ∼120 ms and gauge factor ∼1.62), and a wide detection range (0–700%), including joint movements as well as more subtle human motions (facial micro-expression changes and speech). More importantly, the hydrogel-based strain sensor exhibited excellent EMI (41 dB, X-band) and UV shielding properties (365 nm, 100%, 0.5 mm) due to the synergy of porous structure, moderate conductivity, and ionic solution environment. Moreover, it demonstrated robust adhesion (29 kPa), high shape adaptability, and self-healing capability. This innovative multi-functional flexible sensor design provides guidance for the development, research and application of high-performance flexible wearable materials.

Improving the electrocatalytic performance by modulating the surface and interface electronic structure of noble metals is still a research hotspot in electrocatalysis . Herein, we prepared the heterogeneous catalyst based on the well-dispersed PdCu nanoalloy and the N -doped Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene support (PdCu/N-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) via in situ growth of PdCu nanoparticles on the fantastic N-Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets. By exploring the electrocatalytic properties of ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), the composition optimized Pd 1 Cu 1 /N-Ti 3 C 2 T x delivers higher mass activity/specific activity/intrinsic activity (2200.7 mA mg Pd -1 /13.1 mA cm −2 /2.2 s −1 ), anti-poisoning ability and stability than those of Pd/N-Ti 3 C 2 T x , Pd 1 Cu 1 /Ti 3 C 2 T x and commercial Pd/C, which can be attributed to the modified surface electronic features of Pd by the participation of Cu atoms and N-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene , as well as the “metal-carrier” effect between the PdCu nanoalloy and N-Ti 3 C 2 T x heterogeneous interface. Furthermore, the conductivity of N-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene can be improved by N -doping, and the abundant terminal groups (-O, –OH, -F and N) on the N-Ti 3 C 2 T x surface can promote the electron exchange between PdCu and N-Ti 3 C 2 T x . This work provides an effective strategy for engineering heterogeneous electrocatalysts for enhanced electrocatalytic EOR by adjusting the interfacial electronic structure of noble metals.

Two-dimensional transition-metal carbides/carbonitrides (MXenes) with both superb electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity are promising for fabricating multifunctional nanomaterials and nanocomposites. However, the construction of three-dimensional (3D) and lightweight MXene macroscopic assemblies with excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical performances has not been realized due to the weak gelation capability of MXene sheets. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient approach for constructing highly conductive 3D Ti3C2Tx porous architectures by graphene oxide assisted hydrothermal assembly followed by directional freezing and freeze-drying. The resultant hybrid aerogels exhibit aligned cellular microstructure, in which the graphene sheets serve as the inner skeleton, while the compactly attached Ti3C2Tx sheets present as shells of the cell walls. The porous and highly conductive architecture (up to 1085 S m–1) is highly efficient in endowing epoxy nanocomposite with a high electrical conductivity of 695.9 S m–1 and an outstanding electromagnetic interference (EMI)-shielding effectiveness of more than 50 dB in the X-band at a low Ti3C2Tx content of 0.74 vol %, which are the best results for polymer nanocomposites with similar loadings of MXene so far. The successful assembly methodology of 3D and porous architectures of Ti3C2Tx would greatly widen the practical applications of MXenes in the fields of EMI shielding, supercapacitors, and sensors.

The pressing demand for ultrathin and flexible shields to counter electromagnetic interference (EMI) has sparked interest in Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene materials due to their exceptional electrical conductivity, tunable surface chemistry, and layered structure. However, pure Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films often lack the mechanical properties required for practical engineering applications, and traditional reinforcement methods tend to reduce electrical conductivity. This work demonstrates an effective strategy to enhance the alignment and densely packed layered structure of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films by regulating the acidity and alkalinity of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene aqueous solutions. This approach simultaneously improves mechanical strength and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). Compared with original Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films, MXene films modified with ammonia solution (NH 3 ·H 2 O) via OH − show a significant improvement in tensile strength (27.7 ± 1.9 MPa). Meanwhile, MXene films treated with hydrochloric acid (HCl) via H + reach an even higher tensile strength of 39 ± 1.5 MPa. Moreover, the EMI SE values of the treated MXene films increase significantly, each reaching 66.2 and 58.4 dB. The maximum improvements in EMI SE values for the acid- and alkali-treated samples are 17.9% and 4%, respectively. In conclusion, the simultaneous enhancement of mechanical strength and EMI shielding efficacy highlights the potential of acid- and alkali-treated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films for applications in ultrathin and flexible EMI shielding materials. L-tryptophan (L-Trp) is crucial for human metabolism, and its imbalance or deficiency can lead to certain diseases, such as insomnia, depression, and heart disease. Since the body cannot synthesize L-Trp and must obtain it from external sources, accurately monitoring L-Trp levels in food is essential. Herein, a nanocomposite film based on polyoxometalate (P 2 Mo 17 V), Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene , and chitosan (Cs) was developed through a green electrostatically mediated layer-by-layer self-assembly strategy for electrochemical detection of L-Trp. The composite film exhibits fast electron transfer and remarkable electrocatalytic performance for L-Trp with a wide linear range (0.1–103 μM), low limit of detection (0.08 μM, S/N = 3), good selectivity, reproducibility, and repeatability. In milk sample, the recoveries of L-Trp were from 95.78% and 104.31%. The P 2 Mo 17 V/Cs-Ti 3 C 2 T x electrochemical sensor not only provides exceptional recognition and detection capabilities for L-Trp but also shows significant potential for practical applications, particularly in food safety and quality control .

The electrochemical utilization of Zn anodes in aqueous batteries is hampered by the intricate and interconnected issues of Zn dendrite growth, H 2 evolution and Zn corrosion reactions. In this study, a multifunctional protective layer comprising MXene and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) was constructed using a self-assembly strategy. The MXene/g-C 3 N 4 protective layer exhibited robust zincophilic characteristics, which facilitated a uniform distribution of the electric field and ensured a sufficient influx of Zn 2+ . This reduces the Zn 2+ nucleation barrier and prevents dendrite growth. In addition, the hydrophobic nature of the protective layer, coupled with its negative charge, can repel SO 4 2− and select water molecules from the electrolyte, which aids in mitigating corrosion and H 2 evolution. The symmetric Zn cell coated with the MXene/g-C 3 N 4 protective layer showed remarkable stability, achieving over 2000 h of reversible cycling at 1 mA·cm −2 . Furthermore, the MXene/g-C 3 N 4 -coated Zn anode paired with a sodium-doped V 2 O 5 cathode (NVO) exhibited enhanced cycling capability over 1500 cycles. Graphical Abstract

MXene materials exhibit substantial energy storage capabilities owing to their high specific surface areas, tunable interlayer spacings, and excellent electrical conductivities. However, these layers are prone to re-stacking, negatively affecting the energy storage capacity of the material. Herein, through a process involving liquid nitrogen-assisted freeze-drying and subsequent annealing, Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets were combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer chains via hydrogen bonding to produce MXene and PVA-derived carbon composite aerogels (MPAs) with microstructures ranging from ordered to disordered arrangements. The incorporation of PVA inhibited nanosheet stacking, and PVA carbonization enhanced the electrical conductivity of the aerogel. The carbonized aerogel (MPA2.0) exhibited a larger specific capacitance along with a more disordered and denser microstructure, thereby accounting for the increased capacitance due to enhanced ion storage in the more structurally disordered carbon nanopores. The optimized MPA aerogel demonstrated a high power density, along with an excellent specific capacitance (MPA2.0 = 348.14 F g −1 , 2 mV s −1 scan rate), and a cycling stability of 92.52 % after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. Furthermore, the MPA2.0-based supercapacitor obtained an impressive energy density (37.8 Wh kg −1 ) and an exceptionally high power density (1800 W kg −1 ) at a current density of 1 A g −1 . By adjusting the PVA loading, the shrinkage and stress–strain characteristics of the microstructure during freeze-drying and carbonization were altered, and the microstructural orientation of the resulting aerogels was controlled. The increased disorder in the aerogel enhanced its capacitor energy storage ability, providing a new approach for the design of multi-component high-performance hybrid supercapacitor electrodes.
