Enhanced 4.7 V Electrochemical Performance of the LiCoO2 Cathode via a Fluoride and LiCo1–xAlxO2 Composite Coating

Yunchao Liao,Zhengfeng Wang,Xinyi Dai,Haijun Chen,Fuzhong Wu,Jingze Li,Yi Mai,Shuie Li

Surface coating is an effective way to suppress the structural collapse and surface side reactions of LiCoO2(LCO) at high voltage. Herein, KAlF4 is used as the raw material for coating modification and combining the wet chemical method and high-temperature solid-phase method to form a dense LiF, KF, and LiCo1–xAlxO2 composite coating layer on the surface of LCO. The fluoride composite coating layer can stabilize the surface of the material, and the solid solution phase can accelerate the transport of Li+ while stabilizing the surface. The synergistic effect of the composite coating phase has a positive effect on mitigating the surface side reactions and structural collapse of LCO at high cutoff voltages above 4.5 V. The modified sample had a first discharge specific capacity of 216.3 mAh/g at 0.5 C in the high-voltage range of 3.0–4.7 V and still had capacity retention of up to 60.4% after 200 cycles, while only 5.8% of unmodified LCO samples remained after 160 cycles. The improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the stabilized surface and phase structure, improved lithium ion diffusion coefficient induced by composite coating as evidenced by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and scanning electron microscopy.

Disclosing the role of defective UiO-66 over Sb(V) removal: A joint experimental and theoretical study

Mingming Peng,Deng You,Hui Shi,Penghui Shao,Wei Ren,Liming Yang,Xin Sheng,Jiachuang Shao,Xuan Ding,Lin Ding,Haozhi Wang,Kai Yu,Xubiao Luo

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ability to create rich defects in the structures for exposed binding sites are beneficial for wastewater treatment. However, the inter-relation between the defect concentration and heavy metal removal performance still deserves the exploration. Herein, UiO-66-X crystal materials are successfully synthesized in the presence of monocarboxylic acid of acetic, benzoic, and trifluoroacetic acid, and the effect of defect concentration on Sb(V) removal performance is systematically studied. XRD, TG, EPR and XPS characterizations reveal that the addition of modulators increases the content of defects in the UiO-66-X, which is beneficial to improve the sites utilization. As expected, the Sb(V) adsorption properties of UiO-66-AA, UiO-66-BA and UiO-66-TFA are boosted by 54.1%, 140.0% and 197.7% compared to that of pristine UiO-66. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm that UiO-66-TFA with the most defects exhibits lower adsorption energy and higher charge transfer, significantly improving the uptake performance of Sb(V). Additionally, the UiO-66-TFA successfully removes antimony in actual water from the Tianyi Lake and Ganjiang River with residual concentrations below 5 μg L −1 , meeting the drinking water standard. This work provides guidance for the rational selection of modulators for efficient heavy metal removal from wastewater.

Fast and homogeneous ion regulation toward a 4 V, high-rate and dendrite-free potassium metal battery

Jiaming Xiong,Minghui Ye,Zhijian Wang,Jiajun Chen,Yufei Zhang,Yongchao Tang,Cheng Chao Li

The uneven distribution and slow diffusion kinetics of potassium ions (K + ) result in the formation and growth of K dendrites as well as poor rate capabilities, restricting the development of K metal anodes (KMAs). Paired with a Mn-based Prussian blue (PB) cathode, the KMA-based full battery exhibits a low average discharging voltage of ≈3.6 V and a high overpotential. Herein, a N-doped graphene nanomesh (NGM) acts as a conductive and potassiophilic host to solve this issue. First, the NGM enables K + ions to rapidly transport its nanopores and edges to reach the whole electrode, offering unblocked transport channels for K + ions and thus acquiring an enhanced rate capability. Second, the N atoms and defects within NGM reduce the nuclear energy barrier of K + ions and induce their homogeneous deposition, avoiding the formation of K dendrites. Third, the nano-/micro-pores within NGM can accommodate the volume exchange of KMA during cycles, improving its cycling stability. Benefiting from these merits, the symmetric K@NGM cell delivers an ultra-low overpotential of 12.4 mV after 1700 h. Matched with a K 1.7 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.9 /graphene cathode, a 4 V and dendrite-free KMnHCF/G‖K@NGM full cell is designed, which exhibits excellent cycling stabilities and rate capabilities.

V-doped Ni2P nanoparticle grafted g-C3N4 nanosheets for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance under visible light

Qian Chen,Jianfeng Huang,Ting Xiao,Liyun Cao,Dinghan Liu,Xiaoyi Li,Mengfan Niu,Guoting Xu,Koji Kajiyoshi,Liangliang Feng

Exploring low-cost and highly active photocatalysts with noble metal-free cocatalysts is of great significance for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under simulated sunlight irradiation. In this work, a novel V-doped Ni2P nanoparticle loaded g-C3N4 nanosheet is reported as a highly efficient photocatalyst for H2 evolution under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrate that the optimized 7.8 wt% V-Ni2P/g-C3N4 photocatalyst exhibits a high hydrogen evolution rate of 271.5 μmol g−1 h−1, which is comparable to that of the 1 wt% Pt/g-C3N4 photocatalyst (279 μmol g−1 h−1), and shows favorable hydrogen evolution stability for five successive runs within 20 h. The remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of V-Ni2P/g-C3N4 is mainly due to the enhanced visible light absorption ability, the facilitated separation of photo-generated electron–hole pairs, the prolonged lifetime of photo-generated carriers and the fast transmission ability of electrons.

Copper-doped ZIF-8 nanomaterials as an adsorbent for the efficient removal of As(V) from wastewater

Heng Wang,Xianjin Qi,Guizhi Yan,Jiahao Shi

Arsenic pollution is an international problem that must be urgently controlled. Therefore, this study is based on a one-pot precipitation method, in which copper ions were added to a zinc organic metal framework (ZIF-8) to partially replace the zinc ions and the obtained adsorbent (Cu-ZIF-8) used to effectively remove As(V) ions from water. The successful synthesis of the Cu-ZIF-8 adsorbent and its adsorption mechanisms were confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, the effects of pH (3–11), initial arsenic concentration (10–350 mg/L), and reaction time on the adsorption performance were also characterized. Our findings demonstrate that Cu-ZIF-8 had a high As(V) adsorption capacity of 238.11 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that of most adsorbents previously reported in the literature. Moreover, this material maintained >75% of its initial adsorption capacity after four adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption kinetics of Cu-ZIF-8 were accurately described using the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, whereas the adsorption isotherm was fitted using the Langmuir model. Collectively, our findings have demonstrated that doping organic metal frameworks with metal ions can substantially improve their adsorption performance without changing their structural properties. Therefore, Cu-ZIF-8 is a promising adsorption material for the treatment of As(V)-contaminated water.

Asymmetric Electrolyte Design: Energy-Efficient Electrolytic Hydrogen Production under 0.95 V Driven by Janus Metal Phosphide Nanoarray

Ziyi Wei,Meirong Ren,Yuan Wang,Shuhe Yang,Xue Fu,Yiyue Ma,Liping Jiang,Xinzhi Ma,Wenxin Zhu,Jianlong Wang

Water electrolysis is an environmentally friendly method to produce the promising energy carrier of hydrogen; however, the required high cell voltages restrict its industrial application. Therefore, reducing energy consumption is crucial for large-scale hydrogen production. Except for exploring high-efficiency electrocatalysts, developing energy-saving water electrolysis systems has also attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this work, we report a three-chamber membrane water splitting system with asymmetric acid–base electrolytes driven by two kinds of bifunctional transition-metal phosphide nanoarrays for energy-saving hydrogen production. Experimental results present that this hybrid system just requires voltages below 0.95 V to obtain the overall current density of 10 mA cm–2, which enables a large energy consumption decrease by ∼43% compared to the traditional alkaline water splitting system. In addition, this hybrid system could be well coupled with the solar panel to realize solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Nitrogen-doped activated porous carbon for 4.5 V lithium-ion capacitor with high energy and power density

Weikang Zheng,Zongyang Li,Guang Han,Qiannan Zhao,Guanjie Lu,Xiaolin Hu,Jing Sun,Ronghua Wang,Chaohe Xu

Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) have become one of the most popular energy storage devices because of the combination of high energy densities and power densities. However, the kinetic imbalance of anode and cathode restricts the specific capacities and voltage windows of LICs. Herein, an in-situ nitrogen-doped activated porous carbon (ANMPC) material with high specific surface area (1894.9 m 2 /g) is proposed to act as both cathode and anode for the preparation of the 4.5 V “all carbon” LICs. The hierarchically porous ANMPC obtained by KOH activation and carbonization of polypyrrole (PPy) has plenty of mesopores created by surfactant (added during the PPy process) as well as micropores generated by KOH activation, thus can provide abundant active sites for ion intercalation and large area for electrostatic adsorption simultaneously, satisfying the critical requirements of high-performance anode and cathode, respectively. After coupling the pre-lithiated ANMPC anode and fresh ANMPC cathode, the complete LIC device delivers large energy density of 167.5 Wh/kg at a power density of 269.0 W/kg, and still remains 88.9 Wh/kg at an ultrahigh power density of 13,198.5 W/kg, exhibiting enormous potential for applications in high performance lithium-ion capacitors.

Neutral-Alkaline Hybrid Water Electrolysis at Less Than 1.43 V Enabled by a Branched NiCo-Hydroxysulfide Nanoarray

Wenxin Zhu,Guoyun Zhang,Ziyi Wei,Ao Wang,Yiyue Ma,Qiankun Wang,Xinzhi Ma,Jianlong Wang

In this study, a branched and amorphous NiCo-hydroxysulfide nanoarray uniformly coated on a carbon fiber cloth (NiCo-CHS NW/CC) is reported to serve as a Janus and efficient catalyst for alkaline overall water splitting with a low cell voltage of 1.64 V at 10 mA cm–2. The high activity of this catalyst can be attributed to the facilitated electrolyte penetration, promoted gas release, shortened ionic diffusion length, and abundant catalytic active sites enabled by a unique structure with a shaggy surface and an open space as well as the intrinsic high catalytic activity of NiCo-hydroxysulfide. Considering that neutral hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is more thermodynamically favorable than alkaline HER due to the pH effect, a concept of neutral-alkaline hybrid water splitting enabled by the bifunctional NiCo-CHS NW/CC is further proposed. This hybrid water splitting system exhibits a much lower cell voltage (just 1.43 V at 10 mA cm–2) with a large energy-consumption decrease compared to the alkaline water splitting system.

Coloring and near-infrared reflection performance of low-temperature synthesized novel (Cr,V)–ZrSiO4 jewel green pigments

Junling Yu,Feng Jiang,Jianmin Liu,Tao Wang,Xiaojun Zhang,Quan Zhang,Rongchi Zhang,Qian Wu,Qing Hu,Yun Yu,Guo Feng

Novel (Cr,V)–ZrSiO 4 jewel green pigments with good near-infrared reflection performance were prepared by in-situ mineralization at a low temperature of 900 °C. The synthesized pigments were characterized through XRD , FE-SEM, TEM, UV–Vis–NIR, XPS, and CIE L*a*b* colorimetry. The results show that Cr–V co-doping into the zircon lattice can effectively promotes the synthesis of zircon, and significantly produce a coloring effect from blue to jewel green and then to dark green with the increase of Cr/Si mole ratio from 0.025 to 0.4. The optimized Cr/Si is 0.2, showing excellent color rendering performance ( L * = 56.69, a * = -18.52, b * = -9.28). The electron transitions of the (Cr,V)–ZrSiO 4 pigments exhibits broadband emission and shifts to longer wavelength (530 nm) relative to V–ZrSiO 4 with Cr/Si mole ratio of 0, corresponding to the jewel green region. And the pigments possess good near-infrared reflectance in the range of 700–2500 nm. The properties especially excellent near-infrared reflection performance make it promising functional pigment for energy-saving and health.

Atomic Ru coordinated by channel ammonia in V-doped tungsten bronze for highly efficient hydrogen-evolution reaction

Ce Han,Bingbao Mei,Qinghua Zhang,Huimin Zhang,Pengfei Yao,Ping Song,Xue Gong,Peixin Cui,Zheng Jiang,Lin Gu,Weilin Xu

Regulation of the atomic distribution is crucial for the development of atomically dispersed electrocatalysts. In this study, atomic Ru coordinated by channel ammonia in V-doped tungsten bronze (Ru/V-NHWO, Ru 0.44 wt%, V 0.45 wt%) was used as a high-performance catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), demonstrating remarkable mass activity in a wide pH range. Atomic Ru with a regulated spatial distribution and electronic structure was achieved owing to its unique coordination with the ammonia species in the hexagonal channels of V-NHWO. V doping in NHWO led to enhanced intrinsic activity and conductivity. Theoretical calculations revealed that the multichannel, vertically integrated Ru sites in the V-doped channels, as well as the coexisting Ru sites without multichannels or V-doping, improved the free energy of water dissociation and hydrogen sorption , which boosted the HER activity. Our study paves a new way for constructing atomically dispersed materials with a regulated spatial distribution for diverse applications.

Mesopore-encaged V-Mn oxides: Progressive insertion approach triggering reconstructed active sites to enhance catalytic oxidative desulfuration

Fu Yang,Ruyi Wang,Shijian Zhou,Xuyu Wang,Yan Kong,Shuying Gao

The oxidative desulphurization (ODS) has become mainly popular by rapid catalytic oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) relied on efficient heterogeneous catalyst. V-based catalytic active species were regarded as the potential option in the activity-preferred ODS systems. Herein, we reported the re-dispersion of vanadium oxide (VO x ) on the mesoporous silica modified with manganese oxide (Mn 3 O 4 ) through one progressive insertion approach of metal oxides in the silica. Impressively, mesopore-encaged vanadium-manganese oxides in the silica (VMn-MS) as the admirable output of excellent ODS catalyst was demonstrated compared to other monometal-modified counterparts and one-pot implanted one. The characterization results revealed the post-implanted VO x species not only deposited around the pre-covered Mn 3 O 4 on the mesoporous surface but also inserted the surface layer of Mn 3 O 4 inducing the amorphous evolution of aggregated Mn 3 O 4 and the reconstruction of final active sites. This integrated approach made the reconstructed active species afford more exposed catalytic sites and the tailored surface redox cycles owing to the electronic communication of V-Mn. The catalytic results demonstrated the excellent catalytic desulphurization efficiency (~100%) during 60 min at 80 °C, which made the sulphur content reduce to 6 mg·L −1 , remarkably superior to other comparative samples. The outstanding catalytic performance of VMn-MS catalyst can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of V-Mn dual metals rendering two different reaction pathways, which includes free-radical reaction and ring-forming reaction, where Mn site acted as active center triggering reactive free radicals which could be further optimized by surrounded V sites around Mn sites to promote the ODS process.

Electrocatalytic N2 reduction to NH3 with high Faradaic efficiency enabled by vanadium phosphide nanoparticle on V foil

Wei Peipei,Geng Qin,Channa Ali Imran,Tong Xin,Luo Yongsong,Lu Siyu,Chen Guang,Gao Shuyan,Wang Zhiming,Sun Xuping

To develop highly efficient electrochemical catalysts for N 2 fixation is important to sustainable ambient NH 3 production through the N 2 reduction reaction (NRR). Herein, we demonstrate the development of vanadium phosphide nanoparticle on V foil as a high-efficiency and stable catalyst for ambient NH 3 production with excellent selectivity. The high Faradaic efficiency of 22% with a large NH 3 yield of 8.35 × 10 −11 mol·s −1 ·cm −2 was obtained at 0 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode in acid solution, superior to all previously studied V-based NRR catalysts. Density functional theory calculations are also utilized to have an insight into the catalytic mechanism.
