VO 2 has attracted extensive attention as an adaptive camouflage material due to its structural change during the metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 68 °C, which can fast respond to ambient temperature and actively modulate infrared emissivity. However, the thermal instability and undesirable color have restricted its applications in multi-spectral camouflage. In this study, the VO 2 /ZnS core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized via a homogeneous precipitation method. The VO 2 nanoparticle core exhibited a remarkable infrared emissivity modulation ability in the mid-wavelength and long-wavelength thermal atmospheric windows. The ZnS shell, as an infrared transparent material , not only modified the color of VO 2 nanoparticle from unpleasant blue-black to gray-green that adapts to visible camouflage in the woodland background, but also significantly enhanced the oxidation resistance . This is the first report of such a single nanoparticle structure with both variable infrared emissivity and desirable color that offer significant potential for multi-spectral camouflage application.

In this research, soft-binding aminopropanol (APP) was employed as an efficient ligand, for the transfer of as-prepared hydrophobic CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) into polar solvents. It was found that the ligands at the surface of the original QDs could be completely replaced by APP after a phase-transferring process which successfully maintained fluorescence properties and original morphology of the QDs. The resulting intermediate QDs were soluble in common polar organic solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethyl formamide (DMF) and tetrahydrofuran (THF), and the soft-binding ligand could be easily removed by exposure to water. Taking advantage of the excellent solubility of the APP-capped QDs and the soft-binding characteristics of APP, a novel reaction-free method was investigated for the fluorescent labeling of polysaccharide-based micelles via encapsulation of the intermediate QDs. The incorporation of QDs had little effect on the size of the micelles and did not elevate their cytotoxicity. A photo-induced fluorescence enhancement effect was observed for the incorporated QDs, and the QD-labeled micelles could be used for cell imaging. The concept of soft-binding ligand capped QDs and the reaction-free fluorescent labeling method can be applied to a wide range of QD studies.

Environmentally friendly ZnSeTe QDs are attractive candidates for next-generation display and lighting due to their excellent luminescence and composition tunability. However, the substantial reactivity disparity between Se and Te precursors often leads to inhomogeneous Te distribution within ZnSeTe QDs, limiting the color purity and luminescence stability. To overcome these challenges, we developed ZnSeTeS/ZnSe/ZnS gradient alloy QDs to alleviate lattice mismatch and reduce defects, improving the stability and color purity of QDs. The optimized green-emitting QDs exhibit a narrow size distribution (∼5.6 nm), a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 33 nm, and a photoluminescence (PL) peak at 532 nm, closely approaching the green primary defined by the BT.2020 standard. By adjusting the Te and S incorporation ratios, the PL peaks of the QDs are widely tuned from 420 to 670 nm. Furthermore, through the combination of thiol-ligand exchange and UV lithography, high-precision patterning of the ZnSeTeS/ZnSe/ZnS QDs was achieved with a single pixel size of 20 µm × 20 µm × 2.5 µm, demonstrating broad application prospects in next-generation microdisplay applications such as AR/VR.

In conventional photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting
systems,
the high recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers and
sluggish interfacial charge transfer kinetics serve as the core bottlenecks
restricting energy conversion efficiency. In this study, a sulfur-vacancy-engineered
Vs-ZnS/In 2 S 3 heterojunction was constructed
to demonstrate the “electron relay” function of sulfur
vacancies within a Type-II heterojunction. Specifically, sulfur vacancies
create a localized shallow trap level below the conduction band of
In 2 S 3 , amplifying the potential driving force
for interfacial electron transfer. Concurrently, these defect states
effectively capture photogenerated electrons transitioning across
the interface and serve as highly active sites directly participating
in surface reactions, thereby significantly suppressing both the bulk
and surface recombination of charge carriers. Benefiting from this
synergistic mechanism, the as-prepared Vs-ZnS/In 2 S 3 photoelectrode exhibits exceptional PEC performance, achieving
a maximum photocurrent density of 1.26 mA·cm –2 and an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of approximately
0.26%. This is substantially superior to pristine ZnS and conventional
ZnS/In 2 S 3 electrodes. Kinetic and separation
efficiency characterizations indicate that the bulk and surface charge
separation efficiencies are drastically improved to 68.4% and 38.1%,
respectively. This exceptional performance stems from the synergistic
interplay between the heterojunction and the sulfur vacancies: the
localized electronic structure modulated by defect states facilitates
the directional transfer of interfacial electrons and accelerates
the hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics. This work provides a novel
design paradigm for regulating charge transport pathways within heterojunctions
via defect engineering to realize highly efficient energy conversion.

The growing frequency of extreme summer heat events has intensified interest in passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) as a zero-energy thermal management strategy. However, most PDRC materials are limited to white or light colors, restricting their aesthetic integration and application versatility. Here, we report colored and superhydrophobic PDRC films based on a hierarchically porous-particle binary architecture. Uniform zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanospheres are spray-coated as noniridescent structural colorants onto porous polydimethylsiloxane (P-PDMS) substrates with submicrometer to micrometer-sized pores. Benefiting from this structural design, the films exhibit a solar reflectance of 73.8% over 0.3 to 2.5 μm and a high longwave infrared emissivity of 92.4% within the atmospheric window. Under outdoor conditions, the ZnS/P-PDMS films achieve a stable temperature reduction of approximately 1–6 °C below ambient temperature. In addition, the films feature superhydrophobic surfaces with self-cleaning capability. Notably, the temperature response and wettability can be largely retained after representative environmental challenges, including alkaline immersion at pH 14, heating at 90 °C, ultraviolet exposure at 365 nm, and water scouring. The simple fabrication process and environmentally benign materials highlight the potential of this approach for large-scale production and practical PDRC applications.

Inorganic nanoparticles have been introduced into biological systems as useful probes for in vitro diagnosis and in vivo imaging, due to their relatively small size and exceptional physical and chemical properties. A new kind of colortunable Gd-Zn-Cu-In-S/ZnS (GZCIS/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) with stable crystal structure has been successfully synthesized and utilized for magnetic resonance (MR) and fluorescence dual modality imaging. This strategy allows successful fabrication of GZCIS/ZnS QDs by incorporating Gd into ZCIS/ZnS QDs to achieve great MR enhancement without compromising the fluorescence properties of the initial ZCIS/ZnS QDs. The as-prepared GZCIS/ZnS QDs show high T
1 MR contrast as well as “color-tunable” photoluminescence (PL) in the range of 550–725 nm by adjusting the Zn/Cu feeding ratio with high PL quantum yield (QY). The GZCIS/ZnS QDs were transferred into water via a bovine serum albumin (BSA) coating strategy. The resulting Cd-free GZCIS/ZnS QDs reveal negligible cytotoxicity on both HeLa and A549 cells. Both fluorescence and MR imaging studies were successfully performed in vitro and in vivo . The results demonstrated that GZCIS/ZnS QDs could be a dual-modal contrast agent to simultaneously produce strong MR contrast enhancement as well as fluorescence emission for in vivo imaging.

Constructing direct Z-scheme heterostructure is an effective way to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers and optimize the redox ability of the photocatalytic system. This work reports the in-situ synthesis of sea-urchin-like ZnS/SnO 2 Z-scheme heterojunctions via a one-step hydrothermal method . Both experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the tight interfaces derived from in-situ precursor dissociation can ensure a fast transfer for photogenerated carriers, meanwhile, the Z-scheme type of heterojunctions can increase the carrier separation efficiency and maintain the high reduction ability of photogenerated electrons. As expected, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of the as-optimized ZnS/SnO 2 sample can reach 2.17 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 15.5 times higher than that of the commercial ZnS. This work can offer a novel strategy for designing Z-scheme heterojunction as well as controlling the contact interface for boosted photocatalytic activity .

Over the past few decades, I-III-VI quantum dots (QDs) have attracted considerable attention due to their large Stokes shifts, good eco-friendliness, and wide tunable emissions. In this work, a facile microwave-assisted aqueous route using glutathione (GSH) and citric acid (CA) as dual stabilizers is introduced to synthesize AgInGaS/ZnS (AIGS/ZnS) core/shell QDs. An exceptional photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) as high as 79% is successfully achieved, boosting the best performance of water-dispersible AIGS QDs. By varying the Ag/Ga ratio, the PL peak wavelength can be tuned from 547 to 616 nm, and luminescent hydrogel films with different colors are obtained by embedding AIGS/ZnS QDs in polyacrylamide/poly-vinyl alcohol (PAAm/PVA) hydrogels. The white light-emitting diode (WLED) with a high color rendering index (CRI) of 92.1 ( R 9 =92.0) and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3022 K is fabricated using QDs-PAAm/PVA hydrogel films in combination with a blue InGaN LED chip, indicating that the as-prepared QDs are competitive color-conversion materials for WLEDs.

The polyimide is a promising semiconductor photocatalyst . However, its photocatalytic activity is poor because of its small specific surface area, low visible light absorption and easy recombination of photoexcited electron and hole. Herein, porous polyimide/carbon quantum dots/ZnS quantum dots material aerogel with excellent photocatalytic performance is prepared via supercritical fluid drying technology. The material aerogel has large surface area and the structure is porous network. The carbon quantum dots increase the visible light absorption of the polyimide aerogel . The ZnS quantum dots change the VB edge, CB edge and band gap of the polyimide aerogel. Both carbon quantum dots and ZnS quantum dots could improve the charge transfer and facilitate the separation of photoexcited electron and hole. The visible-light photocatalytic performance over oxytetracycline of porous polyimide/carbon quantum dots/ZnS quantum dots material aerogel is increased largely compared to pure polyimide aerogel. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism of the polyimide material aerogel is proposed. ·O 2 − and h + play the key role in the photocatalytic degradation. This work supplies an effective method to prepare visible-light photocatalytic materials.

Increasing the dielectric constant of polymer/sulfide ceramic composites by using wide-bandgap semiconducting sulfide ceramic fillers like ZnS is difficult because of their low interface polarization. To increase the dielectric constant, in this study, ternary polymer-based composite films were designed and fabricated using a hybrid filler consisting of shell-like ZnS particles and core-like V 2 C MXene particles. First, V 2 C MXene with a multi-layered structure was synthesized from the simplest raw materials followed by the in-situ hydrothermal growth of ZnS particles around the V 2 C particles. Then, binary polymer/ZnS and ternary polymer/V 2 C–ZnS composites were fabricated, and their dielectric, conductive, and electrical breakdown properties were investigated. Finally, the effect of interfacial bonding between the V 2 C and ZnS phases was investigated by density functional theory calculations, and the contribution of V 2 C/ZnS interfacial bonding to the higher dielectric constant of the ternary composites than that of the binary composites was explained. The ternary composites exhibited balanced electrical properties suitable for energy storage applications. The ternary composite with 10 wt% hybrid filler loading exhibited a high dielectric constant of ~52, a low dielectric loss of ~0.11 at 100 Hz, and a high electrical breakdown strength of ~202 MV m −1 . This study paves the way for the facile fabrication of high-performance composite dielectrics for application in advanced capacitors.

Semiconductor supported noble metal nanoparticles are widely used in H 2 evolution. Due to the high cost and low catalytic efficiency of noble metals, single-atom catalysts (SACs) are considered as very potential materials to overcome these shortcomings. Herein, the construction of the ZnO–ZnS heterojunction with an excess amount of Zn vacancies promotes the separation of charge carriers and improves the utilization of electrons. Meanwhile, the zinc vacancies on ZnS provide effective anchor sites for Pt atoms, which is beneficial to obtain highly dispersed single Pt atoms catalyst (ZOS-SAPt). Due to the formation of an intermediate energy level by zinc vacancies, the introduction of Pt single atoms promotes the novel type-V electron transport from the conduction band of ZnO to the intermediate energy level and then to the Pt atom. The type-V electron transport not only retains the high reduction potential of photogenerated electrons, but also avoids the loss of carriers. The resultant ZOS-SAPt shows outstanding photocatalytic performance for H 2 evolution under simulated sunlight, reaching 9.6 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 201 times that of ZnO–ZnS. These results provide important information for further development of photocatalysts.

Chains of alternating semiconductor nanocrystals are complex nanostructures that can offer control over photogenerated charge carriers dynamics and quantized electronic states. We develop a simple one-pot colloidal synthesis of complex Cu1.94S-CdS and Cu1.94S-ZnS nanochains exploiting an equilibrium driving ion exchange mechanism. The chain length of the heterostructures can be tuned using a concentration dependent cation exchange mechanism controlled by the precursor concentrations, which enables the synthesis of monodisperse and uniform Cu1.94S-CdS-Cu1.94S nanochains featuring three epitaxial junctions. These seamless junctions enable efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers, which can be harvested for photocatalytic applications. We demonstrate the superior photocatalytic activity of these noble metal free materials through solar hydrogen generation at a hydrogen evolution rate of 22.01 mmol g–1 h–1, which is 1.5-fold that of Pt/CdS heterostructure photocatalyst particles.
