Controllable selenization strategy for in-situ construction of V2CTx MXene-based multiphase electrode materials for simultaneous detection of hydroquinone and catechol in drinking water and beverages

Yu Han,Li Zhang,Shaobin Li,Fengbo Li,Jianjiao Xin,Xue Wang,Minjie Liang

Hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) are toxic isomers with similar structures that often coexist, leading to interference during detection. In this study, we employed a controllable selenization strategy to construct V 2 CT x MXene-based multiphase electrode materials (VSe 2 @V 2 O 3 @V 2 CT x MXene) for the simultaneous detection of HQ and CC. Electrochemical tests revealed VSe 2 @V 2 O 3 @V 2 CT x MXene modified electrode exhibited low electrochemical impedance, a large active surface area, and excellent electrocatalytic performance. The sensor demonstrated linear detection ranges for HQ and CC from 0.5 to 600 μM, with limits of detection 0.144 μM and 0.131 μM, respectively. Additionally, it exhibited excellent repeatability, reproducibility, selectivity, and stability. The practical applicability of the sensor was confirmed through testing in drinking water and beverages, showing satisfactory recovery rates. This work expands the application of V 2 CT x MXene in the field of electrochemical sensing and offers new insights for food safety monitoring.

Fabrication of Unprecedented Fully Biobased Recyclable Underwater Adhesives with High Bonding Strength and Water Resistance via an Adhesion-Cohesion Balance of Bioinspired Catechol-Disulfide Bond Strategy

Wenxiong Zhang,Mingyu Zhu,Ming Li,Ruijia Hu,Zhiwei Chang,Chenjie Zhu,Hanjie Ying

The fabrication of fully biobased adhesives is greatly significant for the green and sustainable development of the furniture, construction, and flooring industries. However, the poor bonding strength, water sensitivity, and mildew resistance seriously hinder their promotion and application. Herein, inspired by the structure of the catechol and disulfide bonds in mussel protein and hair protein, a fully recyclable underwater biobased adhesive with excellent bonding strength, water resistance, and exceptional antimildew performance is prepared. A balance is built between interfacial adhesive force and internal cohesive force via catechol interfacial adhesion of tannic acid (TA) and the dynamic disulfide thermal-responsive network between poly(lipoic acid) (LA) and soy protein (SP). Consequently, this biobased adhesive exhibits a remarkable improvement of bonding strength by 146.81% to 2.32 MPa compared to unmodified SP. Additionally, effective interfacial interactions and stable biomimetic hydrophobic cross-linking structures significantly enhance the water-resistant wet bonding strength by 306.45% to 1.26 MPa compared to unmodified SP. Moreover, the adhesive also possesses favorable underwater adhesion properties, mildew resistance, and recyclability. This biomimetic structural design provides a novel method for the fabrication of extraordinary-performance fully biobased adhesives.

A glassy carbon electrode modified with carbon nano-fragments and bismuth oxide for electrochemical analysis of trace catechol in the presence of high concentrations of hydroquinone

Liu Lingyu,Ma Zhen,Zhu Xiaohua,Alshahrani Lina Abdullah,Tie Shaolong,Nan Junmin

A glassy carbon electrode was modified with carbon nanofragments and bismuth oxide, and the resulting electrode (CNF-Bi/GCE) was applied to the voltammetric determination of catechol (CC) in the presence of a large excess (>100-fold) of hydroquinone (HQ). The CNF-Bi was synthesized by anchoring bismuth oxide on CNFs in a hydrothermal and calcining process. Compared to CNF-modified GCE and bare GCE, the CNF-Bi/GCE exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic activity with respect to the redox reaction of CC (at 0.28 V vs. SCE) and HQ (at 0.15 V). Differential pulse voltammetry was applied to quantify traces of CC in the presence of excess HQ. The calibration plot is linear in the 3 to 20 μmol L −1 concentration range, with a 0.2 μmol L −1 detection limit (at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3). These results indicate the CNF-Bi/GCE is a promising sensor for analyzing trace isomers of dihydroxybenzene. In addition, it is also applicable to the determination of ascorbic acid, dopamine, resorcin, and rutin. A glassy carbon electrode was modified with carbon nano-fragments and bismuth oxide (CNF-Bi/GCE). It was applied to the determination of trace levels of catechol (CC) in the presence of an up to >100 fold excess of hydroquinone (HQ).

A strategy for constructing anti-adhesion surfaces based on interfacial thiol–ene photoclick chemistry between DOPA derivatives with a catechol anchor group and zwitterionic betaine macromolecules

Liying Wang,Guangji Li,Yinlei Lin,Zixun Zhang,Zhifeng Chen,Shuqing Wu

A novel route to construct stable and durable anti-adhesion surfaces was explored via a combination of the excellent anti-adhesion performance of zwitterionic betaine macromolecules with the strong adhesion of DOPA or its derivatives to various substrates. The zwitterionic betaine macromolecules bearing a thiol group poly(DMAPMAPS-co-BAC) and a DOPA derivative DMA containing a catechol anchor group and a double bond were first designed and synthesized. The poly(DMAPMAPS-co-BAC)-grafted surfaces were then fabricated via the interfacial thiol–ene photoclick reaction between poly(DMAPMAPS-co-BAC) and DMA anchored onto substrate (i.e., Glass slides and flat PET sheets) surfaces. The chemical formation of each layer on the surfaces was confirmed by XPS and ATR-FTIR analyses. Their morphologies and wettability were characterized. The results indicate that, compared with the original surfaces, the modified surfaces possess an increased nanoscale roughness; the WCA and OCA values on the modified Glass/PET surfaces can reach 10°/12° and 156°/162°, respectively, showing their strong hydrophilicity and excellent underwater superoleophobicity. The anti-oil-fouling and antifogging properties were investigated and the anti-bacterial adhesion properties were evaluated by bacterial adhesion tests using E. coli and S. aureus as test bacteria, respectively. The results show that the modified surfaces possess obvious anti-oil-fouling and antifogging properties and a strong ability to resist bacterial adhesion with a long term stability. It suggests that such a facile yet universal strategy based on interfacial thiol–ene photoclick chemistry could offer an effective solution to the poor stability of anti-adhesion surfaces modified with ultralow-adherent zwitterionic betaine macromolecules, and could be applicable to a wide variety of substrates.

Electrochemical Detection of Hydroquinone (HQ) and Catechol (CC) in Environmental Samples Using a Pretreated Glassy Carbon Electrode (p-GCE) Modified with a Vertically-Ordered Mesoporous Silica Film (VMSF)

Qinqin Sun,Jing Wang,Zhengzheng Liu,Lujie Wang,Jun Zhang,Biaowei Liu,Liqiong Huang,Fei Yan,Jinsong Liu

Convenient and sensitive detection of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) in environmental samples holds great importance for monitoring. Herein, a vertically-ordered mesoporous silica film (VMSF) supported on the electrochemically pretreated glassy carbon electrode (p-GCE) is prepared by a simple and environmentally friendly electrochemical method and employed to construct a sensitive and anti-fouling sensing interface for quantitative detection of HQ and CC. In virtue of a simple electrochemical polarization, the p-GCE shows enhanced electroactive area and promoted electrochemical activity, as well as oxygen-containing groups, rendering a sensitive electrode substrate with improved analytical performance and the functional interface for stable growth of VMSF. The obtained VMSF/p-GCE has superior electroanalytical capacity toward HQ and CC due to the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding of VMSF and the sensitive p-GCE electrode substrate. The developed VMSF/p-GCE sensor enables the determination of HQ and CC with a wide linear range (1 ∼ 120 μM), high sensitivity (0.368 μA/μM for HQ and 0.404 μA/μM) and low limit of detection (268 nM for HQ and 80 nM for CC). Furthermore, the capacity of the prepared VMSF/p-GCE in the analysis of HQ and CC in environmental water samples and soil leaching solutions has been studied, showing acceptable results and therefore offering a simple and low-cost way for environmental analysis.

Simultaneous voltammetric determination of hydroquinone and catechol by using a glassy carbon electrode modified with carboxy-functionalized carbon nanotubes in a chitosan matrix and decorated with gold nanoparticles

Shen Yu,Rao Dejiang,Sheng Qinglin,Zheng Jianbin

The authors describe a method to anchor gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on carboxy-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs) utilizing chitosan as dispersing and protective agent. A sensor for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol was then fabricated by placing this nanocomposite on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The morphology and composition of the nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The electrochemical behavior of the modified GCE was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The modified GCE exhibits good electrooxidative activity towards hydroquinone and catechol and therefore was used for simultaneous determination of both, with typical voltages of 30 and 130 mV (vs. SCE). A linear reponse is found for the 0.5 μM to 1.5 mM hydroquinone concentration range, and for the 5.0 μM to 0.9 mM catechol concentration range. The respective lower detection limits are 0.17 and 0.89 μM (at an S/N ratio of 3). The sensitivity is 644.44 μA mM −1  cm −2 for hydroquinone and 770.98 μA mM −1  cm −2 for catechol. An electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol was fabricated by modifying the c-MWCNTs/CTS/Au nanocomposites on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE).

Voltammetric simultaneous determination of catechol and hydroquinone using a glassy carbon electrode modified with a ternary hybrid material composed of reduced graphene oxide, magnetite nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles

Kong Fen-Ying,Li Rong-Fang,Yao Lei,Wang Zhong-Xia,Li Heng-Ye,Lv Wei-Xin,Wang Wei

An electrochemical sensor is described for the simultaneous determination of the pollutants catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with reduced graphene oxide, Fe 3 O 4 and gold nanoparticles and then showed a pair of well-defined voltammetric peaks for CC and HQ. Its oxidation peak potentials (located at 0.21 and 0.10 V vs. Ag/AgCl) are well separated, and this makes it suitable for simultaneous determination of the two isomers. Under optimal conditions, the oxidation peak currents of CC and HQ increase linearly in the 0.05–550 μM and 0.1–500 μM concentration ranges, even in the presence of 0.1 mM of the respective other isomer. The detection limits are 0.02 and 0.17 μM (at S/ N  = 3), respectively. The modified GCE exhibits good selectivity and recovery when applied for the analysis of spiked wastewater. Ternary hybrid nanomaterials of rGO-Fe 3 O 4 -Au was developed for simultaneous electrochemical determination of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ).
