Uncontrolled hemorrhage and infection are the main reasons for many trauma-related deaths in both clinic and battlefield. However, most hemostatic materials have various defects and side effects, such as low hemostatic efficiency, poor biocompatibility, weak degradation ability, and lack of antimicrobial properties. Herein, an oxidized cellulose (OC) sponge with antibacterial properties and biosafety was fabricated for hemorrhage control and wound healing. The as-prepared OC sponges were prone to water triggered expansion and superabsorbent capacity, which could facilitate blood component concentration effectively. Importantly, they had significant biodegradability with little irritation to the skin. This hemostat could also reduce the plasma clotting time to 53.54% in vitro and demonstrated less blood loss than commercially available hemostatic agents (GS) in a mouse model of bleeding from liver defects. Furthermore, the biocompatibility antimicrobial properties and possible hemostatic mechanism of the OC sponge were also systematically evaluated. Importantly, the potential wound healing applications have also been demonstrated. Therefore, the materials have broad clinical application prospects.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) aerogels provide a renewable biological macromolecular scaffold for constructing functional separation media due to their three dimensional nanofibrous network and abundant hydroxyl groups. In this study, BC derived composite aerogels were developed via a multiscale functional coordination approach, incorporating Fe 3 O 4 @PDA nanoparticles and silane derived hydrophobic domains into the cellulose framework. The BC macromolecular network preserved the porous architecture and supplied reactive sites for PDA mediated anchoring and silane condensation, while Fe 3 O 4 @PDA and FAS/MTMS enhanced interfacial adhesion, surface roughness, magnetic recoverability, and water repellency. The resulting composite aerogel exhibited excellent comprehensive performance, such as acid and alkali resistance, thermal stability, and self-cleaning ability. It retained over 80% recovery after 100 compression cycles at 50% strain and displayed outstanding hydrophobic and oleophilic behavior (water contact angle 161.9°) in oil/water separation. The adsorption capacities for oils and organic solvents were ranged from 20.73 to 48.21 g/g with over 85% capacity retention after 50 adsorption/desorption cycles and a continuous separation efficiency of 99.93%.

The Biomass photoreforming is emerging as an alternative and promising technology to simultaneously produce value-added chemicals and solar fuels. However, photoreforming of the biomass macromolecular remains a great challenge due to the lack of bifunctional photocatalyst and insight of detailed mechanism. Herein, we design the Ni 2 P onto the two-dimension Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (Ni 2 P/ZCS) as the electron migration layer to realize the spatial separation of photogenerated carrier, which facilitates the depth investigation on the redox reaction. As a result, the Ni 2 P/ZCS exhibited dually catalytic performance (9.16 mmol g −1 h −1 of H 2 generation along with 1.48 mmol g −1 h −1 of lactic acid production) from cellulose photoreforming. Systematic experiments and density functional theory (DFT) were performed to reveal the bifunctionality and detailed mechanism. This work demonstrates a well concept on biomass photoreforming with the rational design of bifunctional photocatalysts.

Nanocellulose hydrogels are a crucial category of soft biomaterials with versatile applications in tissue engineering, artificial extracellular matrices, and drug-delivery systems. In the present work, a simple and novel method, involving the self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) induced by tannic acid (TA), was developed to construct a stable hydrogel (SH-CNC/TA) with oriented porous network structures. The gelation process is driven by the H-bonding interaction between the hydroxyl groups of CNCs and the catechol groups of TA, as substantiated by the atoms in molecules topology analysis and FTIR spectra. Interestingly, the assembled hydrogels exhibited a tunable hierarchical porous structure and mechanical moduli by varying the mass ratio of CNCs to TA. Furthermore, these hydrogels also demonstrate rapid self-healing ability due to the dynamic nature of the H-bond. Additionally, the structural stability of the SH-CNC/TA hydrogel could be further enhanced and adjusted by introducing coordination bonding between metal cations and TA. This H-bonding driven self-assembly method may promote the development of smart cellulose hydrogels with unique microstructures and properties for biomedical and other applications.

Hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose is one of the most important processes for the conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals. Besides cellulose, lignin is the third of the main components of native lignocellulose . It is essential to understand the role of lignin in the depolymerization process of cellulose using lignocellulose as raw material. Here, the role of lignin was studied by using a lignin dimer model with a β-O-4 linkage and an organsolv lignin as the additive, respectively, for depolymerization of cellulose via oxidation-hydrolysis method. The results showed that both lignin dimer model and organsolv lignin substantially promoted the oxidation of cellulose and increased the yield of glucose. 30.01% yield of glucose was given for microcrystalline cellulose in present of 10% organsolv lignin, compared to 22.64% glucose yield for pure microcrystalline cellulose. Additionally, the mechanism of the promotion effect of lignin on the oxidation of cellulose process was proposed.

Nano-cellulose is widely used in the fields of double-hydrophobic interface fabric, high-grade protective clothing, chemical industry and medicine. Although the research of nano-cellulose has received widespread attention, because of its strong intermolecular force, its dispersion in the medium is not ideal. In order to further increase the dispersion of nano-cellulose in the medium, one of the methods used is to weaken the hydrogen bonding between nano-cellulose by chemical route. In this work, nano-cellulose is simply modified by coupling agent in environment-friendly solvent. Different analytical methods are used to verify the successful modification of nano-cellulose. The results show that the dispersibility of the modified nano-cellulose in water is improved, and the thermal stability is enhanced in the range of 300–567℃. It is worth remarking that the transmittance of the modified nano-cellulose in visible light still remains above 85%. This study provides a feasible, simple and environmental-friendly strategy for developing the application of nano-cellulose, especially in the field of photopolymerization, radical polymerization and cross linking reaction.

Green bio-flocculants from renewable biomass resources have received the widespread attention for wastewater treatment, which are promising alternatives to petroleum-based synthetic flocculants. In this paper, sustainable cationic cellulose bio-flocculants with various amino group contents were successfully prepared by a feasible chemical crosslinking with polyethyleneimine (PEI). The flocculation performances of diverse PEI-grafting cellulose (CE-PEI) were evaluated to purify turbid Kaolin suspension. Further, the flocculation kinetics and flocculation mechanism were investigated. Benefiting from the high surface positive charges and supramolecular structure, CE-PEI bio-flocculants with amino group contents of 17.5 mmol/g displayed the best turbidity removal efficiency. The residual turbidity of Kaolin suspension decreased from the initial 480–8.6 NTU, a 98.2% reduction with CE-PEI dosage of 0.15 mg/mL, sedimentation time of 30 min at pH 7.0. Flocculation kinetic results indicated that interaction of aggregation and collision between CE-PEI bio-flocculants and Kaolin particles was sufficient for the flocculation process at the optimal CE-PEI dosage. Moreover, charge neutralization was the dominant mechanism for the flocculation of CE-PEI on Kaolin. Thus, this work not only exploits a promising application of cellulose as a bio-flocculant, but also provides a feasible approach to efficiently purify high turbidity wastewater. Graphic abstract

Lightweight and high-strength materials with high electromagnetic interference shielding performance are the best solution for electromagnetic pollution. However, the MXene film with extremely high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness cannot be extensively applied to the aerospace engineering because of its high density and low mechanical properties. Herein, a MXene/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) composite film with low density and high conductivity (24,875 S m −1 ) was prepared by using an ice crystal sacrificial template as a pore-forming agent and CNF as a structural reinforcement. The composite film with a small thickness effectively shielded electromagnetic waves since it has a continuous three-dimensional MXene conductive network framework, which serves as a rich interface to facilitate multiple reflections and absorption attenuation of electromagnetic waves. In addition, the absolute electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of the prepared film reached 9177 dB cm 2 g −1 . The design concept and approaches adopted in this work are highly efficient and scalable, which provides a bright prospect for the development of the MXene/polymer composites with high electromagnetic interference shielding properties.

Hydrogel wound dressing is a type of hydrophilic polymer, which has been widely studied and applied in biomedical field. In this study, a simple and non-toxic method was developed to prepare a new type of composite hydrogel, which was formed through the Schiff-base reaction between the aldehyde of Oxidized Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (OHEC) and the amino of Carboxymethyl Chitosan (CMCS). Hence, a series of tests toward this new composite hydrogel which contained its structure and performance was applied. Statistics achieved from those tests showed that this composite hydrogel comprised of some high-quality properties such as suitable gelation time, good swelling ability, suitable water evaporation rate, good blood compatibility and biocompatibility. Considering these properties, this hydrogel has a potential to be explored as wound dressing.

Four novel regioselectively carbamoylated cellulose derivatives with two types of substituents, one being a 3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate group and the other being a phenylcarbamate, a 3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamate or a 4-methylphenylcarbamate group, at the 2-, 3-positions and 6-position were synthesized and utilized as chiral stationary phases in high-performance liquid chromatography. The obtained derivatives exhibited characteristic chiral recognition abilities which were significantly affected by the nature and arrangement of the groups at the 2-, 3-positions and 6-position. Compared with cellulose tris(3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate) and Chiralcel OD columns, several racemates were better resolved on these new phases. With all six racemates resolved on cellulose 2,3-bis(4-methylphenylcarbamate)-6-(3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate), it appears to be a potential useful chiral stationary phase in the future. Also, the influence of mobile phase on chiral recognition was investigated. Better resolutions were generally obtained with decreased amount of 2-propanol with a mixture of hexane/2-propanol as the mobile phase. Moreover, when ethanol was used instead of 2-propanol as the mobile phase modifier, poorer enantioseparations were often achieved.

Hydrogel materials with high water content and good biocompatibility are drawing more and more attention now, especially for biomedical use. However, it still remains a challenge to construct hydrogel fibers with enough strength and toughness for practical applications. Herein, we report a bio-inspired lotus-fiber-mimetic spiral structure hydrogel bacterial cellulose fiber with high strength, high toughness, high stretchability, and energy dissipation, named biomimetic hydrogel fiber (BHF). The spiral-like structure endows BHF with excellent stretchability through plastic deformation and local failure, assisted by the breaking–reforming nature of the hydrogen bonding network among cellulose nanofibers. With the high strength, high stretchability, high energy dissipation, high hydrophilicity, porous structure, and excellent biocompatibility, BHF is a promising hydrogel fiber for biomedicine. The outstanding stretchability and energy dissipation of BHF allow it to absorb energy from the tissue deformation around a wound and effectively protect the wound from rupture, which makes BHF an ideal surgical suture.

Hydrophobic microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) aerogel is synthesized using microcrystalline cellulose and NaOH/urea solution as precursors through the sol–gel route and alkylation hydrophobic coagulation bath. Especially, the effects of different drying modes and content of MCC on the physical chemistry properties are investigated. The results show that samples using nano-self-assembly method combined supercritical CO 2 drying possess loose and uniform porous three-dimensional network structure. The specific surface areas before and after modification are 180.28 m 2 /g and 154.37 m 2 /g with average pore sizes at 22.58 nm and 25.71 nm. The hydrophobic angle is up to 154.3°, the maximum adsorption efficiency can reach 12 g/g, which is also of reusability after 5 adsorption tests. This hydrophobic MCC aerogel has excellent adsorption performance, and simple, rapid, effective oil contamination treatment which is of use in oil adsorption.
