Determination of cellulose derived 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural content in lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysate by headspace gas chromatography

Hu Hui-Chao,Zhang Yu,Zeng Tong,Zhou Weining,Chen Lihui,Huang Liulian,Ni Yonghao

This paper reports a robust method for rapid determination of cellulose derived 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (5-HMF) in biomass hydrolysate suspension based on headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC). The headspace equilibration at 150 °C for longer than 4 min with a pH range of 2.0–3.5 and a 50% (v/v) of ethanol content can obtain the full evaporation of 5-HMF, and eliminate the formation of additional 5-HMF generation from hexose. The linear GC response of 5-HMF was achieved by controlling the sample size within 20 μL. The results showed that this method has a good precision (relative standard deviation < 6.97%) and accuracy (recoveries ranged from 94.0 to 104.8%). The limit of quantification of the method was 51 mg/L. It was also found that a considerable amount of furfural (13.8%) and 5-HMF (18.7%) was adsorbed on condensed lignin and humins in residual biomass, and the washing procedure with ethanol can completely extract the adsorbed furfural and 5-HMF. The present method is accurate, simple, and robust, it will be a powerful tool for determining the content of 5-HMF in the liquid samples from biorefinery related processes.

Conversion of C5 carbohydrates into furfural catalyzed by a Lewis acidic ionic liquid in renewable γ-valerolactone

Shurong Wang,Yuan Zhao,Haizhou Lin,Jingping Chen,Lingjun Zhu,Zhongyang Luo

For the purpose of building a green reaction system to produce furfural (FF), the conversion of two important pentoses from hemicellulose, namely xylose and arabinose, was investigated in an aqueous reaction system including a Lewis acidic ionic liquid as a catalyst and renewable γ-valerolactone (GVL) as a co-solvent. The results showed that the introduction of GVL greatly improved the reactivity of pentose and inhibited the secondary decomposition reaction of FF compared to a pure-water reaction system. NMR analysis suggested that the composition of pentose conformers was greatly altered towards a reactive distribution. The highest FF yields were 79.76% (from xylose) and 58.70% (from arabinose), which were obtained at 140 °C. The influence of reaction parameters on pentose conversion was also studied. A comparison between different reaction conditions suggested that arabinose had less reactivity than xylose, leading to its lower conversion rate and FF yield. Furthermore, xylan and real biomass materials were tested in the proposed reaction system, and decent FF yields of up to 69.66% (from xylan) and 47.96% (from corn stalk) were obtained.

Hf-based metal organic frameworks as bifunctional catalysts for the one-pot conversion of furfural to γ-valerolactone

Wenke Li,Zhe Cai,Hang Li,Yu Shen,Yongqiang Zhu,Haichao Li,Xubin Zhang,Fumin Wang

One-pot conversion of furfural to the target product γ-valerolactone (GVL) is a challenging and meaningful part of biomass exploitation. Development of heterogeneous catalysts with both Brønsted and Lewis acid properties has proved to be promising and useful because they offer an efficient way to tandem cascade reactions from furfural to GVL. Herein, we successfully synthesized sulfated DUT-67(Hf), a novel bifunctional catalyst, via a post-synthetic modification method. The prepared sulfated DUT-67(Hf) was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption, Elemental (N, C, H, S) analyses, situ infrared spectra of pyridine adsorptions, XPS, FT-IR, TG, and NH 3 -TPD. The acidity of the catalysts could be adjusted by submersion in different concentrations of aqueous sulfuric acid, giving 0.01 mol/L sulfuric acid for 0.42 mmol/g acidity to 0.1 mol/L sulfuric acid for 2.16 mmol/g acidity. Sulfated DUT-67(Hf) possessed by 0.06 mol/L aqueous sulfuric acid exhibited optimal catalytic activity and showed an 87.1% yield of GVL under the conditions of 180 °C after 24 h of reaction. Moreover, the mechanism of introducing Brønsted acid sites into DUT-67(Hf) and the better hydrogen donors was also investigated through contrasting experiments.

Cooperation between hydrogenation and acidic sites in Cu-based catalyst for selective conversion of furfural to γ-valerolactone

Yuewen Shao,Qingyin Li,Xinyi Dong,Junzhe Wang,Kai Sun,Lijun Zhang,Shu Zhang,Leilei Xu,Xiangzhou Yuan,Xun Hu

The production of γ-valerolactone (GVL) receives increasing attention due to its extensive applications as a promising fuel and fuel additive. In this study, the direct conversion of biomass-derived furfural to GVL with a unprecedent yield of 90.5% was achieved via consecutive hydrogenation and acid-catalyzed reactions over CuAl for hydrogenation and a co-catalyst (i.e. H-ZSM-5) for acid-catalysis in ethanol. The relative abundance of the hydrogenation sites and acidic sites determines the reaction network and the transfer of the main products from furfuryl alcohol (FA) to ethyl levulinate (EL) or GVL, as the acidic sites, especially the Brønsted acidic sites, not only catalyze the formation of EL from FA, but also affect the hydrogenation activity of CuAl. However, the Lewis acidic sites facilitate the opening ring of FA to 1,4-pentanediol, preventing the GVL formation. The acid catalyst and hydrogenation catalyst deactivate via varied mechanisms in the conversion of furfural to GVL, which is required to be considered in the further development of the robust catalysts.

The study of active sites for producing furfural and soluble oligomers in fructose conversion over HZSM-5 zeolites

Liqin Wang,Heqin Guo,Qiang Wang,Bo Hou,Litao Jia,Jinglei Cui,Debao Li

Furfural, generally achieved from hemicelluloses and its derived pentose, is a high value-added product. The formation of furfural from cellulose and hexose remains challenging. The acid sites in zeolites are the major active sites for preparing furfural from hexose. The catalytic performance of zeolites can be improved by increasing the number of active sites for the preparation of furfural. In this work, HZ-Na free-m and HZ-Na-m zeolites were prepared through without or with adding Na + ions in the mother gels, respectively. GHB (hydrolysate of GBL) was the active site for the formation of acyclic fructose precursor (Intermediate 2). Acyclic fructose production and the following dehydration for producing furfural were favored by the middle strong and strong Brønsted acids in the channels of HZSM-5. Meanwhile, middle strong and strong Brønsted acids were favored the production of HMF from fructose and furfural from xylose. The exterior weak Lewis acid of HZSM-5 could promote the formation of soluble oligomers. The soluble oligomers were composed by HMF and furfural through condensation, etherification, nucleophilic attack and electrophilic attack. HMF molecule was easy to participate in the production of soluble oligomers than furfural molecule over exterior weak Lewis acid of HZSM-5.

Metal chloride-based acidic deep eutectic solvent for efficient lignin separation and furfural co-production from solid residue

Qihang Ye,Zhaoping Zhong,Wei Wang,Yuxuan Yang,Renzhi Qi,You Jia,Huanqi Chen,Xiang Zheng

A “lignin-first” strategy was proposed employing an acidic DES for the preliminary separation of lignin. The DES, formulated with ZnCl₂, levulinic acid, and ethanol used as an additive (molar ratio of 1:1:2), was used to investigate the effects of pretreatment conditions on the efficiency of lignin separation from pine wood. The results demonstrated that both temperature and pretreatment time were critical factors determining lignin recovery efficiency, with 120 °C and 6 h identified as the optimal reaction conditions. The lignin recovery yield initially increased with higher proportion of DES, followed by a decrease upon further addition of DES. Excessive DES addition resulted in excessive fragmentation of lignin, thereby reducing recovery efficiency. A maximum lignin recovery ratio of 94.12% was achieved under the conditions of 120 °C, 6 h, and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:15. Characterization analysis revealed that the extracted lignin exhibited structural features similar to those of milled wood lignin (MWL), along with a relatively low molecular weight (1500–2500 g/mol) and a narrow dispersion coefficient (PDI < 2.0). Hydrolysis of the solid residue confirmed that DES pretreatment effectively enhanced cellulose conversion (increasing from 41.11% to 93.26%) and yielded 36.74% furfural. This study provides valuable insights for future biomass refining processes.

Antibiotic residues derived carbonaceous materials for transfer hydrogenation of bio-based furfural: experiments, kinetics and techno-economic analysis

Jun Zhang,Ying Qiu,Chengyu Li,Rui Shan,Haoran Yuan,Yong Chen

Although the resource utilization of antibiotic residues attracts great interest, the potential application in transfer hydrogenation of platform molecules has barely been reported. Here, we firstly reported the fabrication of antibiotic residues derived carbonaceous materials (AR-T) for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of bio-based furfural into furfuryl alcohol. The in-situ generated acid-base sites in porous AR-T significantly contributed to the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction of furfural, which finally gave high furfuryl alcohol yield of 91.0 mol% and low activation energy of 41.4 kJ/mol using isopropanol as both the hydrogen source and solvent. The isopropanol with low reduction potential presented excellent hydrogen donating capacity for furfural hydrogenation. A plausible reaction mechanism for furfural-to-furfuryl alcohol transformation via the cooperative effect of acid-base sites in isopropanol over as-prepared AR-T was also proposed. The techno-economic assessment clearly substantiated the feasibility and economy of AR-T for transfer hydrogenation of furfural, where the total revenue for producing 1 kg furfuryl alcohol achieved $19.8 kg −1 and outperformed the state-of-the-art transition metal catalysts mediated furfural hydrogenation. The present study not only provides an approach for the green and highly efficient utilization of antibiotic residues but also opens novel cost-effective avenues for realizing the catalytic upgrading of bio-based platform oxygenates into value-added chemicals.

Stability-enhanced Cu-based catalysts via Al doping and Nb promotion for conversion of furfural to 2-methylfuran

Dandan Zuo,Wuyu Wang,Miaojia Song,Peng Zheng,Sa Li,Qi Zhang,Xinghua Zhang,Longlong Ma

A ternary Cu-Nb/Al-MCM-41 catalyst achieves 99.60 % 2-methylfuran selectivity at 160 °C under atmospheric H2. • Al incorporation enhances metal dispersion and generates balanced Brønsted-Lewis acidity for controlled C O hydrogenolysis. • Nb promotion enables efficient H2 activation and strengthens Cu-Nb interfacial electronic coupling. • The catalyst exhibits excellent long-term stability and can operate continuously in a fixed bed for 500 h. The selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of furfural (FAL) into 2-methylfuran (2-MF) is a crucial transformation for upgrading lignocellulosic biomass into liquid fuels. Herein, a series of Cu-Nb catalysts supported on mesoporous MCM-41 were developed. Over the optimized Cu-Nb/Al-MCM-41 catalyst, FAL was completely converted and the selectivity of 2-MF was 99.60 % at only 160 °C under ambient hydrogen pressure. Structural analyses revealed that Al incorporation reinforced metal-support interactions, enhanced Cu dispersion, and producing moderate Brønsted-Lewis acid sites, which synergistically facilitated hydrogen transfer and selective C O bond cleavage. In situ DRIFTS and XPS measurements confirmed a tandem hydrogenation-dehydration pathway proceeding via furfuryl-alcohol (FOL) intermediates, where Nb promoted H 2 activation and Al-derived acid centers accelerated dehydration at interfacial Cu-Nb-Al sites. The catalyst maintained high activity and selectivity during 500 h time-on-stream in a fixed-bed reactor, although slight deactivation was observed after prolonged operation. These findings establish a clear structure-function correlation between electronic modulation and acid-metal synergy, offering a sustainable strategy for efficiently producing furan-based biofuels under mild conditions. Highly Dispersed Zirconium–Oxo Species Anchored on Ultrathin g-C3N4 Nanosheets for Efficient Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Furfural

Yanan Li,Yixiao Shi,Lei Li,Lijun Wang

The development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the sustainable upgrading of biomass-derived platform molecules remains a pivotal challenge. Herein, we report a facile strategy for constructing active Lewis acid–base pairs by anchoring well-dispersed zirconium–oxo species onto thermally exfoliated ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets. By simply extending the calcination time of melamine to 10 hours, g-C3N4 is simultaneously synthesized and exfoliated into nanosheets with a thickness of ~1.2 nm (approximately 3 layers). These nanosheets offer abundant pyridinic and pyrrolic N atoms, which effectively immobilize the zirconium–oxo species through robust Zr–N coordination, yielding the g-C3N4 /Zr(IV) composite catalyst. In the transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol using 2-propanol as the hydrogen donor, this catalyst achieves >90% conversion and >99% selectivity under mild conditions (120 °C). Structural and catalytic characterizations indicate that prolonged calcination increases the specific surface area and the density of edge N–H functional groups, facilitating the generation of more Zr–N active pairs. Poisoning experiments confirm the indispensable role of Lewis acid sites in achieving high conversion and highlight the essential function of basic sites in maintaining exceptional selectivity toward furfuryl alcohol. Furthermore, isotopic labeling studies verify that the hydroxyl hydrogen in furfuryl alcohol originates exclusively from the hydroxyl group of 2-propanol, while its α-hydrogen is supplied from the α-position of 2-propanol. The catalyst demonstrates robust structural and crystalline stability over five consecutive reaction cycles. Notably, partial activity could be restored by methanol washing, and the remaining deactivation is attributed to minimal Zr leaching. This work highlights the potential of nitrogen-rich two-dimensional supports in anchoring zirconium–oxo species for efficient and sustainable biomass conversion.

Silicalite-1 encapsulated Cu nanoclusters with La modification for enhanced performance in hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol

Han Xiang,Lu Lin,Yu Li,Qisong Yi,Chaoran Jiang,Rui Chen,Yuanshuai Liu,Na Sai,Jinlu He,Fenghua Bai,Wenhao Luo

Selective hydrogenation of furfural (FFL) to furfuryl alcohol (FAL) represents a pivotal paradigm in sustainable biomass valorization. In this work, nanoscale Cu clusters were encapsulated in silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite using in-situ synthesis, and further modified by a rare-earth element of La for regulating the catalyst microenvironment. The obtained La-Cu@S-1 can provide an enhanced performance in the FFL-to-FAL transformations, with 98.6% conversion of FFL and 99% selectivity of FAL at 110 °C, 20 bar H 2 , and 3 h. Besides, La-Cu@S-1 shows a good stability without apparent catalyst deactivation upon four consecutive runs. Extensive characterization research reveals that La addition could provide anchoring sites for Cu nanoclusters via an enhanced electronic interaction, thereby effectively suppressing metal leaching and agglomeration during the liquid-phase catalysis. Additionally, La addition could modulate the zeolite microenvironment of encapsulated Cu nanoparticles and notably stabilize the conventionally unstable Cu + species at a high proportion, even in a reductive H 2 atmosphere during catalysis, accounting for the enhanced activity and stability. This study showcases La modification as an efficient approach to rationally develop metal-zeolite combinations with enhanced performance, promoting potential utilization and development of rare-earth elements in the valorization of biomass and other renewable energy.

Construction of Cu-M-Ox (M = Zn or Al) Interface in Cu Catalysts for Hydrogenation Rearrangement of Furfural

Hongyu Niu,Yuan Cheng,Chuang Li,Shaojie Li,Jingjie Luo,Changhai Liang

Rational design of promising Cu catalyst requires better understanding of the Cu–support perimeter for reactions such as hydrogenation rearrangement of furfural─a pivotal and alternative transformation to produce cyclopentanol. Herein, a series of Cu catalysts with constructed Cu-M-Ox interfaces (M = Zn or Al) have been synthesized. In freshly reduced Cu/ZnO-Alx samples, aluminum species was enriched surrounding Cu. The Cu-Al-Ox contacting interface was formed, and the CuAl2O4 spinal structure was detected as a combining consequence only if Zn and Al species coexisted. The specific metal–support synergistic interaction and Cu-Al-Ox contacting interface simultaneously aroused the enhanced redox property and large number of surface acid sites, facilitating the adsorption/activation of hydrogen and reactants. During the reaction, Al2O3 retreating from the Cu-Al-Ox interface caused the replacement of Cu-Al-Ox by new Cu-Zn-Ox interface, which was directly correlated with the irreversibly changed chemical structure and decreased cyclopentanol yield, although the furfural conversion was well sustained. In this work, we confirmed that supported copper catalysts were competent for the activation and conversion of furfural, with the turnover frequency reaching 28.1 h–1 by the Cu/ZnO-Al3 sample at temperatures as low as 90 °C. The further transformation of cyclopentanone to cyclopentanol was largely depending on the maintenance of a steady Cu-Al-Ox contacting interface.

One-pot conversion of furfural to gamma-valerolactone in the presence of multifunctional zirconium alizarin red S hybrid

Qingrui Peng,Haijun Wang,Yongmei Xia,Xiang Liu

A multifunctional Zr-containing catalyst (FM-Zr-ARS) was successfully synthesized by a modulated hydrothermal synthesis route. Systematic characterization results supported the presence of robust porous inorganic-organic frameworks stabilized by the strong coordination interaction of Zr 4+ with oxygen-rich functional groups in Alizarin red S (ARS). Moreover, the -O-Zr-O- network in the FM-Zr-ARS structure formed a rich content of acid-base sites. In addition, the inherent sulfonic groups in ARS made the FM-Zr-ARS hybrids possess Brønsted acid sites. Therefore, under the synergistic catalysis of the multiple functional sites, FM-Zr-ARS showed remarkably high catalytic activity for γ-valerolactone (GVL) production from levulinate esters and furfural. Finally, 72.4 % and 97.7 % yields of GVL were obtained in the conversion of furfural and ethyl levulinate, respectively, after 8 h of reaction at 433 K. On the basis of the role of different functional sites, a plausible catalytic mechanism was presented for the conversion of biomass-derived furfural to GVL.
