A novel drug loading system, Au@Si–NN–Si@SiO2, is constructed by a layer-by-layer assembly approach. The core Au nanorods serve as the matrix for a near-infrared light (NIR) responsive photothermal feature. Meanwhile, the assembly's middle shell is composed of azobenzene linked silica, which produces free radicals by breaking –NN– bonds at a high temperature brought about by a NIR irradiation-caused photothermal effect, which further triggers the loaded drug release. The outer shell is formed of SiO2 in order to prevent leakage of drug in the middle layer. The fully drug loaded nanocarriers, Au@Si–NN–Si@SiO2-Dox, exhibit an excellent photothermal effect (43%) at a concentration of 170 μg mL−1 under 808 nm NIR laser at 2.3 W cm−2. The antitumor performance of Au@Si–NN–Si@SiO2-Dox was investigated using human colon cancer cells (HCT116) as a model. By combining NIR-triggered drug release, free radical generation and the photothermal effect, the proposed Au@Si–NN–Si@SiO2-Dox exhibits improved antitumor efficiency. By using a dosage of 170 μg mL−1, a cell viability of 17.56% is achieved for HCT116 (5 × 103–1 × 104 cells per well) with 10 min of NIR laser irradiation (808 nm, 2.3 W cm−2). All the results demonstrate that Au@Si–NN–Si@SiO2-Dox exhibits wonderful dosage-dependent antitumor performance and has great potential as a therapeutic agent for tumors or even for use in the clinic.

Nanocomposites have attracted the most attention for antitumor treatment. Here, we present a near-infrared (NIR) sensitive nanovehicle to reveal synergistic chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Upconverting nanoparticles (UCNP) NaYF4:Yb, Tm@NaYF4 were adopted as the core using a one-step coprecipitation method to realize the coating of the mesoporous silica shell and the doping of photosensitizer Hypocrellin A (HA). Furthermore, a UV light-cleavable 4-(2-carboxy-ethylsulfanylmethyl)-3-nitro-benzoic acid linker (CNBA) was synthesized and grafted outside as a “gate” to insure the encapsulation of the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). Upon NIR irradiation, the UV light emission (derived from UCNP) can induce the break of the CNBA linker to make the “gate” open and cause drug release. Besides, the blue emission (450–470 nm) can excite HA to generate reactive oxygen (ROS) to achieve PDT. Owing to the nanoscale particle size (75 nm) and targeting transferrin (Tf) modification, these nanocomposites possess fast uptake by cancer cells (HeLa and MCF-7) and the enhanced cytotoxicity is derived from the synergistic effect of chemotherapy and PDT that would easily be controlled by the acting strength and time of NIR irradiation. Hence, the NIR light-sensitive nanocomposites are expected to be the promising and flexible platform for cancer treatment.

Uranium, a radioactive element, exists in aqueous environments primarily as uranyl ions (UO22+), posing significant risks to human health and the environment. Detecting UO22+ in such environments remains challenging. Here, an upconversion fluorescent sensor (UCDM) for the detection of UO22+ in an aqueous environment was constructed based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) principle. This sensor utilizes upconversion nanoparticles loaded with DNAzyme (UCDA) as energy donors and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as energy acceptors. MoS2 exhibits a high affinity for single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), enabling the sensor to function effectively. In the presence of UO22+, DNAzyme catalyzes substrate cleavage at the rA site, releasing ssDNA that binds to MoS2. This interaction leads to a decrease in UCDA upconversion luminescence. The unique upconversion luminescence property of an upconversion nanoparticle minimizes background autofluorescence, enhancing sensitivity. The sensor achieves a low detection limit of 5.81 nM and demonstrates robust recoveries (98.7%–102.7%) in complex aqueous matrices such as Xiangjiang water, uranium mine wastewater, human serum, and urine samples, underscoring its practical applicability.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising non-invasive anticancer approach that relies on photosensitizers (PSs) activated by specific light wavelengths to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species, particularly singlet oxygen (¹O₂), selectively destroying tumor cells. However, conventional PDT faces challenges due to the poor bioavailability of hydrophobic PSs and the limited tissue penetration of UV/visible light, hindering its efficacy for deep-seated or large tumors. To address these limitations, we developed a novel nanoplatform integrating up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with dual photosensitizers-5-aminolevulinic acid and Rose Bengal-encapsulated in a mesoporous silica-folic acid (FA) coating. Upon 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the UCNPs emit two kinds visible light, simultaneously activating both PSs to enhance ¹O₂ production, thereby inducing synergistic apoptosis and autophagy in cancer cells. Furthermore, cyanine 5 (CY5)-modified UCNPs enable imaging-guided tumor targeting via FA receptor-mediated uptake. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate significantly improved PDT efficacy with the dual-PSs system compared to single-PS modalities. This strategy offers a potent solution for deep-tumor PDT, showcasing substantial potential for clinical translation.

The persistent threat of bacterial infections, which contribute to significant global morbidity and mortality, highlights the urgent demand for developing advanced antimicrobial materials. Herein, octopod-shaped silver-gold alloy nanostructures (Ag-Au octopods) were synthesized through a controlled deposition of gold onto silver octopods. Ag-Au octopods can convert near-infrared (NIR) light into thermal energy with photothermal conversion efficiency of 41.5 %. They also exhibited peroxidase-like nanozyme activity, catalysing the decomposition of trace amounts of H 2 O 2 to produce significant levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Notably, this catalytic activity was further enhanced upon exposure to NIR light. During in vitro antibacterial tests, a dose of 32 µg mL −1 of Ag–Au octopods, together with H 2 O 2 and 10 min of NIR irradiation, achieved a bactericidal rate greater than 99.0 %. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the antimicrobial effect arises from the disruption of bacterial membrane integrity, leakage of intracellular nucleic acids, a rise in intracellular ROS, and subsequent oxidative stress. The results present an effective and synergistic antibacterial strategy using the combined photothermal and nanozyme activities, offering a promising direction for next-generation antibacterial applications.

A supramolecular nanovehicle, denoted as ICG-DOX/Gd-LDH, was synthesized by the co-intercalation of indocyanine green (ICG) and doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) into a gallery of Gd3+-doped-layered double hydroxide (Gd-LDH) such that to achieve a chemo-photothermal synergistic therapeutic agent. The unique structure of Gd-LDH can not only stabilize the photothermal agent ICG to enhance the photothermal efficiency, but also hamper the recombination between electron and holes, leading to the generation of more reactive oxygen species (ROS) under irradiation in the NIR range. Together with the loading capacity of DOX, ICG-DOX/Gd-LDH exhibited excellent combinatorial effects on tumor growth inhibition in both in vitro studies on HeLa cell line and in vivo tests over tumor-bearing mouse models. Moreover, it showed ideal ability for long-term tracing of the carrier distribution via either MRI or fluorescence imaging. Thus, this study indicates that Gd-LDH is a promising platform for the construction of multifunctional formulations, especially theranostic nano-systems for cancer treatment.

Microspheres produced from biodegradable poly (D, L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) have been studied widely as drug delivery carriers for therapeutics. This study aimed to develop a near-infrared (NIR) light-activated PLGA microsphere loaded with two kinds of drugs with different molecular weights respectively or simultaneously by the double emulsion method (bovine serum albumin (BSA) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) as the drug model agents, indocyanine green (ICG) as the NIR responsive component). To optimize the incorporation of drugs and particle size for PLGA microspheres loaded single drug, the effect of three processing parameters, including the amount of polymer, initial ICG content, and initial BSA or TH content on the drug entrapment efficiency (EE), drug loading and the particle size were investigated. The PLGA microspheres were spherical and ranged from 5 to 10 μm in diameter. The EE of ICG and BSA in PLGA@ICG-BSA was 78.41 ± 0.71% and 69.88 ± 5.14%, respectively. The EE of ICG and TH in PLGA@ICG-TH was 71.52 ± 5.07% and 28.39 ± 3.39%. The PLGA microspheres exhibited desirable biodegradability and low cytotoxicity. Based on the optimized processing of single drug-loaded microspheres, dual-drug-loaded microspheres containing both large and small molecule drugs were further prepared. The EE of ICG, BSA, and TH was 83.37 ± 0.59%, 52.65 ± 3.48%, and 12.88 ± 2.53%; the particle size was ∼7.21 μm. All the NIR-responsive PLGA microspheres exhibited an efficient photothermal property and enhanced photothermal stability under multiple NIR irradiation cycles. The drugs from the different PLGA microspheres were released continuously over 18 days, mainly determined by Fick's diffusion. Furthermore, the drugs can be controlled released through a NIR light trigger, resulting in a dosage increase at a specific time point.

In this work, a new type of near-infrared (NIR) reflective yellow pigment with a general formula of [(Li0.4RE0.6Al0.6)x/2Bi1–x][MoxV1–x]O4 was prepared by a solid-phase reaction calcined at a high temperature of 700 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), a UV–vis–NIR spectrophotometer, and other methods were used to characterize the structure, morphology, and optical properties of synthetic pigments. For a series of [(Li0.4RE0.6Al0.6)x/2Bi1–x][MoxV1–x]O4 pigments, when x > 0.2, bismuth vanadate changes from the monoclinic phase (space group I2/b(15)) to the tetragonal scheelite phase (space group I41/a(88)). The structures of the pigments are all tetragonal scheelite phases, and the difference in their color rendering is mainly due to the differences between the valence band and the conduction band and the difference in the band gap caused by different rare earth elements. The NIR reflectance (R %) and NIR solar reflectance (R* %) of [(Li0.4La0.6Al0.6)0.1Bi0.8][Mo0.2V0.8]O4 pigments are 96.64 and 93.10% (b* = 77.13, C* = 77.6), respectively. In the acid and alkali resistance test, the color difference values ΔE* of the pigment before and after soaking are less than 5. Finally, the thermal infrared test of the synthetic pigments and commercial pigments on galvanized plates without or with TiO2 was performed. The experimental results show that the temperature difference between the synthetic pigment and commercial bismuth yellow can reach 11 °C. Therefore, it is believed that the synthetic pigment can reflect more heat radiation from sunlight and has better heat insulation performance. The synthetic pigment has higher reflectivity than the commercially available bismuth vanadate pigment, showing its application potential.

Developing efficient near-infrared (NIR) luminescence materials is crucial for next-generation NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs). Cr 3+ -activated materials exhibit broadband NIR emission, however, they suffer from low efficiency and severe thermal quenching at wavelengths beyond 900 nm. To overcome these drawbacknd Membrane Technology, School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Sun Yat-sen Uns, an efficient energy transfer pathway from Cr 3+ to Ln 3+ (Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ ) in Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 (CNLC) double perovskite single crystals was established. The Cr 3+ singly doped crystal shows broadband NIR emission peaking at 970 nm with an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 73.1%. Through effective Cr 3+ sensitization, the NIR-II emissions at 996 nm (Yb 3+ ) and 1222 nm (Tm 3+ ) are enhanced, along with the significantly improved luminescent thermal stability. Moreover, the co-doped system also exhibits superior IQE of 86.6% for CNLC:3 mol%Cr 3+ ,9 mol%Yb 3+ and 71.6% for CNLC:3 mol%Cr 3+ ,5 mol%Tm 3+ . The developed crystals integrated into a 540 nm-driven NIR LED delivers a NIR radiation power of 80.4 mW at a driving current of 600 mA, enabling high-resolution bioimaging and night vision applications. This work provides insight into energy transfer engineering to boost the luminescent efficiency and thermal stability in NIR-emitting materials.

Nanomotors are appealing drug carriers with deep tissue penetration to overcome biological barriers. Though high motion efficiency has been achieved with NIR-II light driven nanomotors, insufficient directional control and material biocompatibility limit their broad application. Herein, leveraging commercially available liposomal doxorubicin (DOX) as a platform, we develop a magnetic-steering NIR-II light thermophoretic liposomal nanomotor (LipNM) by asymmetrically incorporating magnetic photothermal Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 9 S 8 nanoparticles into the lipid bilayer, firstly realizing directional nanoscale self-thermophoresis. The embedded Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 9 S 8 nanoparticles respond to a brief magnet stimulation for spatiotemporal steering and NIR-II irradiation with local temperature increase for self-thermophoresis of LipNMs, which further facilitate tumor tissue targeting and deep tumor penetration, respectively. The direction-controllable thermophoretic LipNMs demonstrate good biocompatibility and increase the delivery efficiency of DOX by 186% compared to passive liposomal doxorubicin. Owing to the targeted accumulation and deep tissue penetration at the tumor site, the therapeutic efficiency of LipNMs for breast cancer in vivo is as high as 94.9%, providing a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

While combination therapies generally exhibit superior therapeutic outcomes compared to single-modality treatments, current photodynamic–chemodynamic (PDT/CDT) combination strategies remain limited by two major factors: (i) the restricted tissue penetration depth of light and (ii) the insufficient endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration within the tumor microenvironment (TME), both of which compromise therapeutic efficacy. To overcome these obstacles, we developed an innovative hybrid nanorobot (EcN + UCNPs@mSiO2–MnO2–ZnPc) that integrates engineered Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) with orthogonally emissive upconversion nanoparticles (C@3S). Specifically, MnO2 decomposes into Mn2+ under acidic TME conditions, subsequently catalyzing the conversion of H2O2 into cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and oxygen, which exhibits dual effects of tumor cell eradication and hypoxia alleviation. Meanwhile, C@3S transforms 980 nm laser radiation into blue-violet emission, activating the EcN that preferentially colonizes tumor regions and overexpresses respiratory chain enzyme II (NDH-II), thereby replenishing H2O2 in situ and sustaining chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Additionally, zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) is excited by the 808 nm-converted red emission to generate singlet oxygen (1O2), further enhancing reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and amplifying oxidative stress in tumor cells. Collectively, our findings demonstrate significant tumor growth inhibition through this self-amplifying ROS-generation mechanism. This multifunctional hybrid nanorobot offers a promising platform for precision cancer therapy with spatiotemporal controllability.

Achieving near-infrared (NIR) phosphors with broadband emission, robust thermal stability, high internal quantum efficiency (IQE), and excellent chemical durability remains a longstanding challenge, largely due to the fundamental trade-off between structural rigidity and flexibility. Here, we overcome this constraint by designing a novel series of garnet-type phosphors, BaY 2 Ga 4- x GeO 12 : x Cr 3+ (BYGG: x Cr 3+ ). The optimized composition BYGG:0.06Cr 3+ delivers an IQE of 93%, remarkable anti-thermal quenching behavior (103% emission retention at 423 K), and outstanding chemical stability (retaining 97% emission after 35 days in water). Notably, fine-tuning the Cr 3+ concentration broadens the emission bandwidth from 77 to 194 nm while preserving strong thermal stability (93%@423 K). This exceptional performance arises from the synergistic combination of ultra-high structural rigidity (Debye temperature, Θ D = 987 K), wide bandgap (5.10 eV), weak crystal field strength, and optimized 4 T 2 excited-state population. A fabricated NIR phosphor-converted LED (pc-LED) device demonstrates an NIR radiated power of 189.35 mW at 100 mA and a photoelectric conversion efficiency up to 12%. These results establish NIR phosphor BYGG: x Cr 3+ as a promising candidate for next-generation NIR pc-LED applications in night vision, non-destructive inspection, and biomedical imaging.
