Microwave co-pyrolysis of industrial sludge and waste biomass: Product valorization and synergistic mechanisms

Yang Liu,Asif Ali Siyal,Chunbao Zhou,Chenglong Liu,Jie Fu,Yingwen Zhang,Bang Yao,Li Chao,Huimin Yun,Jianjun Dai,Xiaotao Bi

Microwave co-pyrolysis of textile dyeing sludge (TS) and furfural residue (FR) was investigated in this study. Comprehensive pyrolysis index (CPI) was employed to investigate pyrolysis performance and FR addition significantly improved co-pyrolysis. Product distribution showed that increasing FR ratio enhanced the bio-oil and gas with significant reduction in biochar. For bio-oil, FR addition neutralized the strong alkalinity and inhibited the formation of nitrogen compounds. Moreover, bio-oil maintained a very low oxygenates content (0.97–5.97%). For biochar, co-pyrolysis was favorable for the enrichment of C and H and mitigated the potential contamination. FR addition increased the calorific value and contributed to pore development of biochar. Online inspection displayed that co-pyrolysis drastically restrained the release of sulfur-compounds and nitrogenates in volatile, while enhanced the production of alkanes, aldehydes, and ketones. Moreover, the interaction between TS and FR was influenced by their major components. For heavy metals (HMs), Er was at low risk for most HMs and FR addition ratios of 40 and 80 wt% appeared to be more favorable. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that FR addition changed the decomposition behavior and affected co-pyrolysis process. This study also evaluated the co-pyrolysis synergistic mechanisms of TS and FR. Overall, microwave co-pyrolysis is a novel and effective method to reduce environmental pollution and produce high-quality products, providing new insights for the low consumption and efficient utilization of industrial solid waste.

Microwave-enhanced pyrolysis of bamboo for furfural-rich bio-oil production over WS2 catalyst

Penghao Liu,Zhiwei Jiang,Yongjian Zeng,Yaolin Wang,Chen Zeng,Xin Tu,Kai Yan

The efficient utilization of bamboo waste has attracted increasing interest as a promising solution to address the challenges associated with climate change and promote a more environmentally friendly approach to resource utilization. Herein, we demonstrated the highly selective production of furfural from bamboo through a microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) process using WS 2 catalysts. Firstly, the content of furfural can be precisely regulated by manipulating key process conditions such as microwave power, temperature and the mass ratio of WS 2 to bamboo. Notably, compared to non-catalyzed MAP, the presence of the WS 2 catalyst significantly enhanced the production of both furfural and furan components. The optimal content of furfural and furan components reached up to 66.9 area% and 75.6 area% in bio-oil under the conditions of 700 W, 400 °C and a 3:10 WS 2 to bamboo ratio for 15 min. Furthermore, the liquid oil mainly consisted of C5 and C6 products (86.5 area%), indicating that MAP enhances the selectivity of small molecular products and furan compounds when coupled with the WS 2 catalyst. Experimental results revealed that WS 2 played bifunctional roles as a microwave absorbent and catalyst, promoting the bio-oil content and limiting the secondary pyrolysis of furan components, leading to a high selectivity of furan and a high content of furan products. This work provides valuable insights into producing furan-rich bio-oil from bamboo through MAP over transition metal dichalcogenides materials.

Modulation of the pyrolysis of ZIF-67 by kaolinite for highly efficient peroxymonosulfate activation

Yan Mo,Weiwei Yin,Chenhui Long,Chao Gao,Qihang Zhao

The persistent challenge of organic pollutant remediation drives the development of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes, where heterogeneous cobalt-based catalysts face critical stability limitations. To address this, we rationally designed kaolinite-supported carbon-coated cobalt composites through calcination of ZIF-67/Kaol precursors, achieving enhanced peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for atrazine degradation. The engineered catalyst combines lamellar structure and active surface groups of kaolinite with ZIF-67-derived nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks, exhibiting exceptional catalytic performance. Mechanistic studies reveal singlet oxygen as the exclusive reactive species, with nitrogen doping in the carbon matrix substantially enhancing charge density and electron transfer efficiency. The carbon coating facilitates electron redistribution while protecting active cobalt sites, enabling sustained catalytic cycles. This work establishes a materials design paradigm combining mineral support engineering with metal-organic framework derivation strategies, demonstrating significant potential for developing robust PMS activation systems in water remediation applications.

Pyrolysis of confined MOFs in mesoporous SiO2 nanoreactors for removal of antibiotic from water

Mengru Wu,Xinshu Li,Yaoyang He,Kaisu Li,Songlin Yang,Mingchang Zhu,Na Sun

The detrimental effects on human health and ecological security caused by antibiotic pollution of the aquatic environment have attracted widespread attention. The development of more effective materials is urgently needed for antibiotic removal. In this paper, a mesoporous composite of SiO 2 /UIO-66–400 was prepared via a solvothermal reaction. The synthesized SiO 2 /UIO-66–400 has a good recycling performance (four times). Adsorption kinetics can be observed that the adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 120 min. At a pH of 7.00, a temperature of 5°C and an adsorbent dose of 0.25 mg·mL −1 , the adsorption capacity of the SiO 2 /UIO-66–400 for 200 mg·L -1 ofloxacin (OFL) can be up to 77.60 mg·g −1 . The interactions at the adsorbent-adsorbate interface are multifaceted, encompassing scenarios of monolayer and multilayer adsorption. Several attractive forces such as pore filling, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π attraction are identified as the primary drivers of antibiotic from water.

Zinc-assisted pyrolysis for optimal graphitization of carbon nanotubes for boosted Fenton-like catalysis

Yuhan Hou,Huitian Qiu,Shiqi Xu,Wen-Da Oh,Xiaohui Wu,Mingjie Huang,Tao Zhou

Carbon-based materials are extensively utilized as catalysts in peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs). However, their basal active sites often exhibit inferior intrinsic activity, necessitating the development of facile modification techniques to enhance their catalytic efficacy in water purification. This study introduces a facile Zn-assisted pyrolysis strategy designed to increase the graphitization degree of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), thereby improving their PMS activation capabilities. The Zn-modified CNTs exhibited a pseudo-first-order rate constant ( k obs ) of 0.2065   min -1 , which is 7.9-fold and 59.0-fold higher than that of the thermally treated CNTs (0.015   min -1 ) and pristine CNTs (0.0035   min -1 ), respectively. Mechanistic studies revealed that the graphitization advancement led to an augmented contribution of the direct electron transfer (ETP) pathway for pollutant degradation, in conjunction with the contribution from singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Such pathway alteration can be owing to the increased electrical conductivity due to the presence of a highly conjugated π-electron system. Additionally, the practical application of the modified CNTs was rigorously evaluated under continuous treatment scenarios and in the presence of diverse anions such as Cl - , NO 3 - , HCO 3 - , and SO 4 2- . The insights gained from this study are pivotal for the optimization of carbon-based catalysts for environmental remediation purposes.

TG-FTIR analysis of co-pyrolysis behavior between petroleum coke and model lignocellulosic biomass

Haoxin Jiang,Yuyan Zheng,Zhuoya Dong,Hui Ming,Xuqiang Guo,Lihua Cheng,Libo Zhang

The co-pyrolysis of petroleum coke with lignocellulosic biomass components offers a promising route for the high-value utilization of petroleum-refining by-products and sustainable biomass conversion. This study employs coupled Thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR) to systematically examine the co-pyrolysis behaviour and interaction mechanisms between petroleum coke and model lignocellulosic components (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) across the temperature range 30–850 °C at heating rates of 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C·min −1 . The results demonstrate that the cellulose–petroleum coke system exhibits optimal volatile-release kinetics at 10 °C·min −1 , with a diffusion coefficient (D = 9.65 × 10 −10  min −2  °C −3 ) and a maximum mass-loss rate (DTG max  = −1.47 %·min −1 ). In contrast, the lignin–petroleum coke system shows pronounced synergistic effects at high temperatures (>600 °C), as supported by activation energies of 57.60–84.14 kJ mol −1 and Gibbs free-energy changes (ΔG = 72.23–98.01 kJ mol −1 ), indicating catalytic and flame-retardant potential. Mechanistic insights reveal that lignocellulosic components exert phase-dependent modulation on pyrolysis dynamics, suppressing petroleum-coke hydration, fine-tuning volatile-diffusion kinetics and facilitating graphitization via co-carbonization pathways. These findings provide a scientific basis for the precise engineering of pyrolysis-product characteristics and advance the development of tailored thermochemical conversion strategies.

Influence of Metal Compounds on Structural and Electrochemical Characteristics of Chars from PVC Pyrolysis

Jiayou Sun,Tianyang Ding,Xue Zhao,Guorong Xu,Chang Wen,Jie Yu

This study aims to investigate the influence of various metal compounds (ZnO, ZnCl2, Zn(OH)2, MgO, MgCl2, and Mg(OH)2) on the structural and electrochemical properties of chars derived from the pyrolysis of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Raw PVC samples mixed with different metal compounds were firstly pyrolyzed at 500 °C in a fixed-bed reactor. The produced chars were further pyrolyzed at 800 °C. The objective was to evaluate the impact of these metal compounds on the char structure through comparative analysis. The pyrolytic chars were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. Zinc-based additives notably increased carbon yield to 32–34 wt.%, attributed to ZnCl2-induced cross-linking. Specifically, ZnO facilitated porous architectures and aromatic structures with six or more rings. Mg-based compounds induce the formation of a highly stacked carbon structure primarily composed of crosslinked cyclic alkenes, rather than large polyaromatic domains. Upon further thermal treatment, these aliphatic-rich stacked structures can be progressively transformed into aromatic frameworks through dehydrogenation reactions at elevated temperatures. A high-surface-area porous carbon material (PVC/ZnO-800, SSA = 609.382 m2g−1) was synthesized, demonstrating a specific capacitance of 306 F g−1at 1 A g−1current density.

Nitrogen-doped hydrothermal carbon as a catalyst for selective alkoxyphenol production from pine pyrolysis

Dong-hong Nan,Cheng-bo Zhang,Qi Niu,Shi-yu Feng,Bin Hu,Ji Liu,Kai Li,Qiang Lu

Nitrogen-doped activated carbon (NAC) has shown great potential in selectively catalyzing the pyrolysis of biomass to produce alkoxyphenols, with the structural characteristics being key to influencing alkoxyphenol yields. In this study, a method for preparing nitrogen-doped hydrothermal carbon (HY-NAC) by hydrothermal carbonization coupled with ammonia water activation was proposed. The resulting carbon was then used as catalyst in the selective preparation of alkoxyphenols by catalytic pyrolysis of biomass, with the 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) being selected as the hydrogen donor. The physical and chemical properties of HY-NAC were systematically studied. Based on the pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, the effects of the carbonization method and ammonia concentration during HY-NAC preparation, and the pyrolysis temperature, catalyst/pine ratio, and DHA/pine ratio during the pyrolysis process on the yields of alkoxyphenols were investigated. The results showed that, compared to the activated carbon prepared by pyrolytic carbonization method, HY-NAC had a larger specific surface area, higher nitrogen content, and higher contents of pyridinic nitrogen and pyrrolic nitrogen, thus exhibiting stronger catalytic performance. At an ammonia concentration of 10 %, the specific surface area of HY-NAC was 947.488 m 2 /g, and the relative contents of pyridinic nitrogen and pyrrolic nitrogen were 38.04 % and 33.22 %, respectively. Under pyrolysis temperature of 500 °C, HY-NAC/pine ratio of 3:1, and DHA/pine ratio of 1:1, the alkoxyphenol yield reached the maximum of 7.42 wt%.

Catalytic pyrolysis of waste epoxy resin using activated carbon to produce stable phenolic compounds

Dong-hong Nan,Run Zhang,Jia-hao Yu,Qi Niu,Han-cheng Liu,Ji Liu,Kai Li,Qiang Lu

Epoxy resin (ER), renowned for its superior properties, is extensively applied in various engineering materials. However, the growing usage has led to substantial solid waste generation, highlighting the importance of developing ER recycling technologies. In this study, a method was proposed for the selective preparation of high-value-added monophenolic chemicals via the catalytic pyrolysis of ER using activated carbon (AC). The impacts of activation method (steam and KOH activation) in the preparation of AC and pyrolysis conditions (pyrolysis temperature and AC/ER ratio) on the yields and composition distributions of pyrolysis liquid products were thoroughly explored. The results indicated that KOH-activated AC exhibited a high specific surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, which could catalyze the pyrolysis of ER for the selective production of phenol and 4-isopropylphenol. At a pyrolysis temperature of 450°C and AC/ER ratio of 1, the total yield and selectivity of phenol and 4-isopropylphenol reached 30.09 wt% and 56.98 %, significantly higher than those of 12.00 wt% and 21.53 % obtained from direct pyrolysis of ER. This study provides guidance for achieving resource-efficient, and high-value recycling of ER-based waste.

Interaction mechanism of cellulose pyrolysis over alumina-coupled Ce-Zr catalysts for aldehyde–ketone compounds

Shuanghui Liu,Zefeng Ge,Mingxun Zeng,Huiyan Zhang

Aldehydes and ketones are regarded as important precursors for hydrocarbon fuel production due to their structural stability and ease of hydrodeoxygenation. In this study, a composite metal catalyst was constructed using alumina as the matrix and Zr and Ce as the active components, which was applied to catalyze the rapid pyrolysis of cellulose for the preparation of aldehydes and ketones. The synergistic roles of metal elements and the transformation pathway of aldehydes and ketones were elucidated, along with the influence of process parameters on product distribution and catalyst structure on activity and coke formation. The results demonstrate that the bimetallic alumina-supported catalyst outperformed the single-metal counterpart, with Zr-Ce/α-Al 2 O 3 showing higher aldehyde and ketone selectivity than Zr-Ce/γ-Al 2 O 3 due to two additional acid sites. Under in-situ pyrolysis at 450 °C and a 1:3 feedstock-to-catalyst ratio, 76 % selectivity to aldehydes and ketones was achieved. ZrO 2 and CeO 2 regulated the acidic sites of alumina and provided lattice oxygen, while the alumina support, in turn, enhanced the catalytic activity of the active metals. The co-precipitated catalyst, with higher BET surface area and stronger acidity, enabled a lower dosage and exhibited greater CeO 2 reducibility. Furfural was identified as the main product of catalytic pyrolysis. Under limited acid sites, it could be converted to 2-methylfuran via hydrogenation or to butanone through ring-opening. Excessive acidity promoted its oxygen addition, leading to acetic acid, which was subsequently ketonized to acetone. In addition, FTIR of the spent catalyst revealed oxygen in coke deposits mainly existed as bound water.

Fabrication of N-doped carbon nanobelts from a polypyrrole tube by confined pyrolysis for supercapacitors

Wang Wei,Lv Haijun,Du Juan,Chen Aibing

In this present work, N-doped carbon nanobelts (N-CNBs) were prepared by a confined-pyrolysis approach and the N-CNBs were derived from a polypyrrole (Ppy) tube coated with a compact silica layer. The silica layer provided a confined space for the Ppy pyrolysis, thereby hindering the rapid overflow of pyrolysis gas, which is the activator for the formation of carbonaceous materials. At the same time, the confined environment can activate the carbon shell to create a thin wall and strip the carbon tube into belt morphology. This process of confined pyrolysis realizes self-activation during the pyrolysis of Ppy to obtain the carbon nanobelts without adding any additional activator, which reduces pollution and preparation cost. In addition, this approach is simple to operate and avoids the disadvantages of other methods that consume time and materials. The as-prepared N-CNB shows cross-linked nanobelt morphology and a rich porous structure with a large specific surface area. As supercapacitor electrode materials, the N-CNB can present abundant active sites, and exhibits a specific capacitance of 246 F·g −1 , and excellent ability with 95.44% retention after 10000 cycles. This indicates that the N-CNB is an ideal candidate as a supercapacitor electrode material.

Sulfur transformation and thermogravimetric analysis of model compounds in oxygen carrier aided pyrolysis/gasification process

Lulu Wang,Chenyang Zhou,Laihong Shen,Yuyang Long,Dongsheng Shen

Sulfur impurity in solid fuel should be paid attention to in the thermal process from the perspective of environment and sulfur recovery, especially the auto-thermal oxygen carrier aided pyrolysis/gasification (OCAP). To uncouple the complex sulfur transformation during OCAP of solid fuel and elucidate the main mechanism, several typical model compounds of various functional groups were used to investigate the kinetic analysis and sulfur transformation through temperature-programmed method. The OCAP process consisted of devolatilization and partial gasification. The activation energy of sulfur models devolatilization was less than that of partial gasification, because the required energy was much more to release lattice oxygen from oxygen carrier. Furthermore, the actual oxygen transport capacity of oxygen carrier (OC) redistributed the sulfurous gases. It was found that H 2 S was released earlier than SO 2 . H 2 S release was ascribed to the devolatilization including the reactions between radicals and hydrogen abstracted from base at low temperature (200–300 °C). The different contact modes between sulfur compounds and OC proved that S could be absorbed in the form of iron sulfide and incorporated into char at low temperature but released in the form of SO 2 by OC oxidation at the elevated temperature (400–600 °C), which was in accordance with the kinetic analysis. The migration of sulfur from disulfide had priority over that from monosulfide, and the sulfur connecting with dialkyl (benzyl) was easier to escape than that with diaryl (phenyl) in OCAP process. The fate of sulfur model compounds was conducive to reveal the complex behaviors of solid fuel with different sulfur species, and this work provides evidence to implement the desulfurization and sulfur recovery strategy.
