A facile and efficient method to directly synthesize TiO2/rGO with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Ni Sun,Jing Ma,Chao Wang,Juanqin Xue,Liangsheng Qiang,Jieli Tang

A facile and efficient one-step hydrothermal method was performed to prepare the TiO 2 /reduced graphene oxide (TiO 2 /rGO). The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra , transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The results showed that the well dispersed TiO 2 nanoparticles with anatase were found uniformly distributed throughout the surface of rGO sheets. The as-prepared composite was used to photocatalytic degradation of Methylene blue (MB), and the experiment results show that TiO 2 /rGO exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic activity for MB degradation under visible-light irradiation compared to Degussa P25, which was attributed to extended light absorption and increased charge separation efficiency due to excellent electrical properties of GO and the chemical bond between rGO and TiO 2 nanoparticles. The composite maintained a higher level of activity after five recycles without any significant loss of photo-catalytic activity. The results manifested that the facile synthesis via a one-pot hydrothermal treatment can provide an effective approach to enhance the performance of TiO 2 /rGO, which is a promising candidate in wastewater treatment application.

Fabrication of magnetic g-C3N4 for effectively enhanced tetracycline degradation with RGO as mediator

Wenqian Fan,Zhi Zhu,Yang Yu,Zhi Liu,Chunxiang Li,Pengwei Huo,Yue Qiu,Yongsheng Yan

In the present work, the ternary hybrid photocatalyst Fe3O4@g-C3N4/RGO is developed by a facile hydrothermal method, which shows a satisfactory degradation rate (90%) and stability in degrading tetracycline. The improvement in the photocatalytic activity of the ternary hybrid photocatalyst is attributed to the Fe3O4 nanobelt and RGO. As a center of oxidation–reduction, the Fe3O4 nanobelt can utilize electrons effectively. RGO with good conductivity is an outstanding electron transporter, which inhibits the recombination of electron–hole pairs. Moreover, the results of the ESR and the radical capture experiment prove that h+ and ˙O2− are the major active species in the tetracycline removal process. At the same time, the degradation intermediates of tetracycline and the photocatalytic mechanism is discussed in this paper in depth. The novel design concept is expected to be used in practical applications.

Synthesis of PANI/rGO composite as a cathode material for rechargeable lithium-polymer cells

Zhang Rui-Tao,Han Jia-Jun,Liu Pan,Bao Chang-Yuan,Cheng Jin-Ning

Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized by an improved Hummers method and then reduced with NaBH 4 ; GO became rGO with regular layered structure. Polyaniline (PANI)/rGO composite was prepared by a adsorption double oxidant method with rGO as a template. Some physical characterization methods (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope) were used to analyze the morphology and crystallinity of the composite. The electrochemical properties were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic charge/discharge, and rate capability. The first discharge specific capacity of the rPANI/rGO and PANI/rGO was 181.2 and 147.8 mAh/g. After 100 cycles, the capacity retention rate was still 90.2 and 88.9% separately, and the coulombic efficiency of batteries is close to 100%. These results demonstrate the composite has exciting potentials for the cathode material of lithium-ion battery.

Hydrothermal synthesis of TiO2–RGO composites and their improved photocatalytic activity in visible light

Yan Liu

Composites of titanium dioxide–reduced graphene oxide (TiO2–RGO) have been prepared via an efficient and facile hydrothermal reaction of graphene oxide and Ti(OH)4 in a ethanol–water solvent. The structure and composition of the composites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific area analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results showed that the TiO2–RGO composites exhibited a layered structure with well-dispersed anatase TiO2 on the surface of the reduced graphene oxide. Compared with the pure TiO2 nanoparticles, the composites had larger surface area, and extended the photoresponse range to the visible light region. The photocatalytic activity of the composites was much higher than that of TiO2 in the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation.

Amorphous NiP supported on rGO for superior hydrogen generation from hydrolysis of ammonia borane

Xiaoqiong Du,Chenlu Yang,Xiang Zeng,Tong Wu,Yinghui Zhou,Ping Cai,Gongzhen Cheng,Wei Luo

Transition metal phosphide based amorphous NiP/rGO hybrids have been successfully synthesized through a facile one-pot co-reduction method. The prepared NiP/rGO hybrids are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDX) techniques. Compared with Ni/rGO, the resulted Ni 91 P 9 /rGO hybrid exhibits superior catalytic activity toward hydrogen generation from hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 ), with turnover frequency (TOF) value of 13.3 min −1 . The activation energy (Ea) of Ni 91 P 9 /rGO for this reaction is calculated to be 34.7 kJ mol −1 , which is much lower than those of the other reported catalysts. This superior catalytic performance may be due to the good dispersibility of Ni 91 P 9 nanoparticles and the synergistic electronic interactions between nickel and phosphorus.

Rapid synthesis of rGO conjugated hierarchical NiCo2O4 hollow mesoporous nanospheres with enhanced glucose sensitivity

Bingrong Wang,Yang Cao,Yong Chen,Xiaoyong Lai,Juan Peng,Jinchun Tu,Xiaotian Li

NiCo2O4 nanospheres, a type of conjugated reduced graphene oxide (rGO), are compounded by a simple and easy synthesis of Cu2O/GO and fabricated NiCo2O4/rGO nanocomposites based on a Cu2O/GO template. The structure and morphology of the hierarchical NiCo2O4/rGO are characterized by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemistry properties of NiCo2O4/rGO composites toward glucose are determined based on a glassy carbon electrode, and the results indicate that the hollow nanospheres of NiCo2O4/rGO could achieve high-sensitivity detections of glucose. The NiCo2O4/rGO composite has a detection range of 0.04 mM to 1.28 mM, a sensitivity of 2082.57 μA mM−1 cm−2, and a detection limit of 0.7 μM. The composite further exhibits obvious stability, superior reproducibility, and excellent selectivity. This study demonstrates that NiCo2O4/rGO is a unique and material with high potential in glucose sensing.

Layer-by-layer inkjet printing SPS:PEDOT NP/RGO composite film for flexible humidity sensors

Yan Yuan,Bo Peng,Hang Chi,Cong Li,Ren Liu,Xiaoya Liu

We report the preparation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene oxide (GO) ink-based layer-by-layer inkjet printing humidity sensors. Sulfonate polystyrene:PEDOT NPs (SPS:PEDOT NPs) were prepared with hard template SPS NPs and GO was synthesized through a modified Hummers' method. Next, the SPS:PEDOT NP/GO multilayer films were printed layer by layer, with one layer of GO followed by one layer of SPS:PEDOT NP ink on the flexible poly-ethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate by using a home inkjet printer. The morphology and structure of the SPS:PEDOT NPs and GO were characterized through TEM and Raman spectroscopy and those of the film were investigated through optical microscopy. SPS:PEDOT NP-reduced GO (SPS:PEDOT NP/RGO) composite sensors were obtained after thermal annealing. To assess their humidity sensing properties, the sensors were exposed to a wide range of relative humidities (RH 0–98%) at room temperature. The SPS:PEDOT NP/RGO PET-based sensor exhibited superior humidity sensing properties in a wide response range (0.13–68.46%), short response and recovery time (39 and 57 s, respectively), and excellent repeatability and flexibility. The resistance of sensors was almost invariable even after folding 200 times. Overall, the SPS:PEDOT NP/RGO PET-based sensors can be used as humidity sensors.

Synthesis of Hierarchical ZnFe2O4@SiO2@RGO Core–Shell Microspheres for Enhanced Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Jiantao Feng,Yanhui Hou,Yechen Wang,Liangchao Li

Hierarchical structured ZnFe2O4@SiO2@RGO core–shell nanocomposites were prepared via a “coating–coating” route, and its structure, composition and electromagnetic properties were characterized. Compared with the binary composites of ZnFe2O4@SiO2, the hierarchical ZnFe2O4@SiO2@RGO ternary composites exhibited enhanced electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties in terms of the effective bandwidth and minimum reflection loss (RL). Furthermore, EMW absorption properties of the prepared samples can be tuned by changing RGO content and thickness of SiO2 layer to reach the best impedance match. The minimum RL of the sample with a thickness of 2.8 mm can reach −43.9 dB at 13.9 GHz, and its effective bandwidth (RL ≤ −10 dB) was up to 6 GHz. Hence, the obtained products can be a new candidate for lightweight EMW absorbing materials.

Preparation of luminescent graphitic C3N4 NS and their composites with RGO for property controlling

Yumeng Liu,Xiao Zhang,Junpeng Wang,Ping Yang

Thin graphitic C3N4 nanosheets (g-C3N4 NS) with bright blue photoluminescence were prepared through an acid and alkali corrosion and ultrasonic-assisted method. g-C3N4 NS/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sample which was prepared through a hydrothermal synthesis offered high separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers because of the thin g-C3N4 NS attached closely to the RGO. The introduction of RGO sheets provided prominent advantages for enhanced light absorption and promoted the transfer rate of photogenerated carriers from g-C3N4 NS. A g-C3N4 NS/RGO (3 : 2) composite not only functions as a sensor to detect Pb2+ and Cd2+ in an aqueous solution but also exhibits efficient visible-light photocatalytic performance. The application in a sensor is ascribed to the intercalation impact between thin g-C3N4 NS and heavy metal ions. Owing to the presence of more active functional groups (e.g., carboxyl and amino groups) on the surface of the g-C3N4 NS compared with the bulk form, the ions can be easily adsorbed onto g-C3N4 NS. The g-C3N4 NS/RGO composites are highly sensitive and selective in ion sensing, as well as having superior photocatalytic activity.

Xiaojuan You,Yumei Chen,Jingming Zhou,Hongliang Liu,Yankai Liu,Yanhua Qi,Chao Liang,Peiyang Ding,Xifang Zhu,Aiping Wang,Gaiping Zhang

Concanavalin A (ConA), as a carrier for immobilizing antibodies, was used for the first time in electrochemical immunosensor. In this work, a label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on Ag nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (AgNPs-rGO) nanocomposite and ConA was successfully prepared to detect arsanilic acid (ASA). AgNPs-rGO nanocomposite displayed superior conductivity and redox capability. Specially, ConA showed excellent binding ability with monoclonal antibody of ASA through lectin-sugar interactions. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed electrochemical immunosensor showed a linear dependence over ASA concentrations ranging from 0.025 ng/mL to 25 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 0.011 ng/mL. Furthermore, the immunosensor was used to monitor ASA in chicken and egg with good precision and accuracy. In conclusion, the simple and low-cost immunosensor was desirably applied as a useful candidate for detection of ASA in animal derived food.

Environmentally-friendly rGO/Mn nanocomposites for efficient removal of tetracycline and its degradation pathway

Mei Lin,Miao Wang,Jianwang Wu,Ming Liu,Zuliang Chen

Since the widespread use of antibiotics, the residues of antibiotics have frequently been detected in various water sources, making antibiotic pollution an urgent environmental issue. In this paper, one-step green synthetic reduced graphene/manganese nanoparticles (rGO/Mn NPs) composites have been utilized as a novel environmentally-friendly catalyst for tetracycline (TC) removal. The results demonstrated that rGO/Mn NPs exhibit excellent adsorption performance for TC, and can efficiently activate sodium persulfate (PDS) to oxidize and degrade TC. Furthermore, the rGO/Mn NPs adsorption-oxidation system (85.2%) was more effective than the adsorption process (70.9%) in removing TC (50 mg L −1 ). Free radical quenching experiments and EPR results elucidated that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) are the primary reactive species responsible for the degradation of TC in the oxidation system. Based on the characterization results, a mechanism of oxidative degradation of TC by rGO/Mn NPs has been proposed. To further elucidate the degradation pathway of TC, the degradation products were identified by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). This analysis provides a foundation for understanding how the rGO/Mn NPs composites activate PDS to degrade TC. Additionally, the ecological structure-activity relationship analysis revealed that TC is converted into intermediates with lower toxicity.

Highly sensitive room temperature hydrogen sensor based on cactus-like ZnO@3D rGO aerogel

Xuehu He,Chunyan Chen,Yuheng Liu,Jiancai Le,Guoqing Xiao,Chunlin Chen,Yucheng Wang,Jian Zhou

Cactus-like ZnO@three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide aerogels (3D rGA) were obtained via a hydrothermal method. The 3D rGA had an interconnected large-size network structure, and cactus-like ZnO nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the 3D rGA. The gas sensors based on cactus-like ZnO@3D rGA showed a high response (81.07) and a fast response/recovery time (15/27 s) to 10,000 ppm hydrogen at room temperature (25 ℃), as well as an excellent stability and selectivity toward hydrogen. The improved hydrogen sensing performance of this 3D structure was mainly related to the high conductivity and porous structure of reduced graphene oxide. Besides, the p-n heterojunction formed between ZnO and reduced graphene oxide was also a significant factor for the performance improvement. The results indicated that the cactus-like ZnO@3D rGA material was promising for the detection of hydrogen at room temperature.
