With the rapid progress of aerospace frontier engineering, the extreme space thermal environment has brought severe challenges to astronauts’ space suits, putting forward higher requirements for thermal protection materials. On this basis, a unique core-shell structured hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)/silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanofiber membrane (HS) was prepared using the coaxial electrospinning method, of which both the thermal insulation SiO 2 nanofiber cortex and the passive radiation cooling (PRC) h-BN nanofiber core make it a promising dual-effect thermal management material. Especially, when the amount of h-BN is 0.9 g, the resultant HS (HS 0.9 ) exhibits astonishing low thermal conductivity of 0.026 W m −1 K −1 and high reflectivity and emissivity of exceeding 90% over an extremely wide range. The expected dual-effect thermal management performance enables the HS to have an ideal cooling effect under both high sunlight intensity and strong light radiation. In addition, HS also shows excellent flame retardant performance arising from the excellent high-temperature stability of h-BN and SiO 2 . What is more, the tensile strength of HS 0.9 was also significantly increased from 0.42 to 7.2 MPa by encapsulating polyimide through vacuum filtration. Therefore, the research results of this work provide innovative highlights for high-temperature protection in daily life and even extreme space environments.

With the escalating concern over electronic device overheating, BN/polymer based thermal conductive composites have experienced remarkable growth in the field of heat dissipation. However, it is challenging to enhance the thermal conductivity of composites while preserving strong interfacial interaction due to the dilemma of chemical inertness of BN, interfacial thermal resistance and filler-polymer interaction. Herein, we utilized the adjustable surface charge of polydopamine under varying pH to fabricate composite films comprising polydopamine-modified boron nitride nanosheets and aramid sheets (BNNS@PDA/ANFS) by electrostatic assembly. The thermal conductivity of the composite rose to 36.9 W/m⋅K −1 with only 20 wt% filler. According to Density functional theory (DFT) simulation and interface thermal resistance calculation, the electrostatic assembly enhanced interface interactions and greatly reduced thermal resistance barrier. Furthermore, the optimal tensile strength of 304 MPa, is 2.32 times higher than pure ANFS film, accompanied by toughness of 33.2 MJ/m −3 . These superior performances are the results of a synergistic strategy, combining interfacial and topological enhancements. This work provides an innovative approach to enhance effective filler contribution in matrix and underscores the significant potential of BNNS@PDA/ANFS composite films in applications related to heat management.

This study aims to investigate the effect of the modification strategy of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on the interfacial heat transfer behavior of the composite. Dual modification of h-BN, including covalent and non-covalent modifications, was achieved by combining 6-aminohexanoic acid (ACA)-assisted wet ball milling and tannic acid (TA) surface deposition. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations show that the interfacial thermal resistance of the covalently modified and the non-covalently modified regions of the composite system is reduced by 19.7 % and 40.9 %, respectively, and the interfacial thermal conductivity is increased by 24.5 % and 88.0 %, respectively. Meanwhile, thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated a 9 °C and 23.7 °C increase in the maximum weight loss temperature of the dual-modified composites compared to that of the two single-modified composites. The synergistic mechanism of the dual modification strategy in improving the interfacial interaction and enhancing the phonon vibration power spectrum of the composites is revealed by MD simulations. This study contributes to a deep understanding of the thermal conductivity mechanism of filled thermal interface materials. It guides the design of modified filler-filled high thermal conductivity rubber-based composites.

Considering the requirement of environmental and bio-friendliness of flame retardants, there is an urgent need to develop efficient flame retardants based on low-toxicity raw materials. Herein, a nano-fold structure DBN@CoMo-LDH was successfully synthesized by combining layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), through a sacrificial template approach involving ion-exchange interaction at atmospheric pressure. Thanks to the better compatibility and strong interfacial interactions of hybrids in matrix, epoxy resin (EP) composites can exhibit superior flame retardancy and smoke suppression without loss of mechanical properties. The enhancement and mechanism of fire safety of EP composites were investigated through cone calorimetric test, condensed-phase residue analysis, and gas-phase product analysis. Compared to EP, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), peak smoke production rate (pSPR), total smoke production (TSP), carbon monoxide production rate (COP) and carbon dioxide production rate (CO 2 P) of EP/4DBN@CoMo-LDH were reduced by 37.77 %, 62.96 %, 50.45 %, 45.71 % and 40.98 %, respectively. DBN@CoMo-LDH not only promoted the rapid generation of a dense carbon layer, but also effectively suppressed the release of gas phase products. Furthermore, it demonstrates excellent antimicrobial properties against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . Moreover, the unique nano-fold structure can provide a good thermal conduction path in the matrix, improving the thermal conductivity of EP. This study offers a feasible approach for designing high-performance flame retardants, and suggests their potential application in multifunctional EP composites.

With the advent of the 5G era, the demand for heat dissipation using high thermal conductivity (TC) materials is becoming increasingly urgent. The electrical insulation and thermal stability of dielectric polymer composites are also notable in electrical and electronic applications. Nevertheless, the improvement in TC of dielectric polymer composites is typically accomplished at the expense of electrical insulating capabilities. Herein, we fabricated polyimide (PI) composites with ordered structure by combining electrostatic spinning, vacuum filtration deposition and blade-coating. The modified boron nitride nanosheets (mBN) not only enhanced the interaction between filler and PI matrix, but also reduced the interface thermal resistance. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure, the in-plane TC of prepared composite was 17.44 W/mK at 18.79 vol% mBN content, which is 9.6 times higher than that of pure PI. Moreover, the composites were electrically insulating, with the volume resistivity of about 10 13 Ω cm, and exhibited great flexibility, exceptional thermal stability (T HRI > 269 °C), excellent thermal dissipation capability and low dielectric characteristics. In summary, this work offers a novel perspective to design highly thermally conductive composites and these composites have vast application potential in flexible electronic devices or circuits.

Despite the outstanding lightweight potential of Mg alloys, their poor corrosion resistance significantly limits their practical applications in engineering. As a more sustainable alternative to solvent-based resins, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coatings offer notable environmental and safety benefits, including low VOC emissions, non-flammability, and ease of application. However, the inherent microporous defects formed during the curing process, coupled with the absence of self-healing capabilities, notably undermine their protective performance. In this study, a smart hybrid coating was developed to improve the corrosion protection of WPU on Mg alloys. The coating combines benzotriazole (BTA)-loaded mesoporous polydopamine (mPDA) microspheres and hydroxylated boron nitride (OH-BN) within the WPU matrix, achieving active-passive synergistic protection through dual pH/light responsiveness. The mPDA enhances OH-BN dispersion within the matrix and simultaneously acts as an intelligent carrier for the controlled release of BTA under acidic or light-irradiated conditions. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that, after 6 h of immersion in NaCl solution (pH = 3), the damaged composite coating retained an impedance modulus of 2.37 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 at 0.1 Hz, and maintained a value of 1.97 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 under light irradiation-28 and 2.8 times higher, respectively, than pure WPU. These results confirm the coating's outstanding corrosion resistance and stimulus-responsive self-healing capability, which arise from the synergistic effects of the OH-BN barrier and BTA release under pH and light stimuli. This work presents a sustainable and intelligent corrosion protection strategy for Mg alloys in harsh environments.

In this work, a nanoreactor combining layers of facile traditional two-dimensional (2D) material, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN, which often called the white graphene) with Pt/Al2O3 catalyst was designed to exhibit higher stability, activity, and selectivity in automobile exhaust treatment. Characterization revealed that h-BN does coat on the surface of platinum and forms a distinct Pt@h-BN/Al2O3 core–shell nanostructure. This as-prepared catalyst possesses good thermal stability and selectivity, because of the excellent high-temperature tolerance and the multidefected structure of the h-BN shell; that is, small molecules such as CO and O2 can easily intercalate into the nanoreactor, while large molecules such as propylene are blocked out. Meanwhile, the intercalated reactants can achieve the conversion of CO to CO2 faster (ΔT100 = 20 °C) with the confinement effect. The study indicates that constructing a nanoscale confined environment with two-dimensional (2D) coating can enhance the performance of the catalyst in multiple aspects and simultaneously provide a good example for designing nanostructured catalysts with multifaceted improvement.

PDA@Fe was loaded onto BN surface, imparting abundant functional groups and enhancing carbonization performance. • High-phosphorus-content PA was grafted onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to promote the cross-linking of the polymer into a char. • Co-Ni/B were uniformly loaded onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to construct a hierarchical BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B flame retardant. • The nano-reinforcing agent combines high P-N-B content with Fe, Co, Ni to achieve synergistic flame retardancy. Boron nitride (BN) is regarded as an effective nano-flame retardant due to its high thermal stability and thermal shielding effect. Here, Fe 3+ -doped polydopamine (PDA@Fe) was first immobilized on the BN surface to provide abundant functional groups and enhance its catalytic carbonization capability. Subsequently, high-phosphorus phytic acid (PA) and cobalt-nickel borate nanosheets (Co-Ni/B) were loaded onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to prepare the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B composite flame-retardant material. Notably, this multi-level structured nano-reinforcer combines the synergistic flame-retardant effect of high P-N-B content with the highly efficient catalytic charring ability of multiple metal ions (Fe, Co, Ni). Notably, the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B/EP composite coating achieved the lowest back surface temperature (167.9 °C) and exhibited the highest expansion height (25.2 mm) and expansion ratio (19.69), demonstrating its excellent thermal insulation performance. Furthermore, the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B/EP composite coating exhibited the highest residual carbon content (29.9%) and the lowest smoke density (39.2%). This can be attributed to the strong catalytic pyrolysis effect of the multi-metal ions, which converts more pyrolysis intermediates into stable carbon, thereby increasing carbon residue while reducing smoke emissions. Microstructural analysis revealed a dense and intact carbon layer, providing strong support for its exceptional thermal protection performance. The successful preparation of this novel flame retardant, which combines high barrier properties, high phosphorus and nitrogen content, and multi-metal-catalyzed carbonization, offers a new approach for developing high-performance refractory coatings. Hexagonal boron nitride nanoplatelets (BNNPs) are promising nanofillers for Mg matrix composites owing to their excellent mechanical properties and low density. In this research, we report the fabrication of ZK61 magnesium composites reinforced with a hybrid of BNNPs and β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) using spark plasma sintering (SPS). The designed composites exhibit a dense microstructure characterized by refined α-Mg grains with β-TCP particles preferentially distributed along the α-Mg particle boundaries. In addition, trace amounts of interfacial products, such as Mg 3 N 2 and MgB 2 , are detected to act as chemical anchoring phases, promoting stronger interfacial bonding. Notably, the composite containing 5.0 wt % β-TCP and 0.3 wt % BNNPs demonstrates a remarkable combination of strength and ductility, exhibiting a compressive yield strength of ∼132 MPa, an ultimate compressive strength of ∼380 MPa, and an elongation of ∼28.9%. This favorable balance of high strength and substantial plastic deformability highlights the synergistic reinforcing effect of β-TCP and BNNPs in the ZK61 matrix. In addition, immersion tests reveal that the degradation rate of the 0.3BNNP/5TCP/ZK61 composite is approximately one-fourth that of the monolithic ZK61 alloy immersed in SBF for 28 d. These findings suggest that BNNP/β-TCP reinforced ZK61 composites are promising candidates for biodegradable implant materials.

The rapid evolution of high-power flexible electronics necessitates materials that concurrently enable efficient heat dissipation and high-precision thermal monitoring. Conventional ionogels suffer from intrinsically low thermal conductivity, which induces severe thermal hysteresis, fundamentally compromising their accuracy in dynamic thermal detection. Herein, rather than treating copolymer regulation or h-BN filling as isolated design elements, we propose a thermally coupled ionogel design aimed at reconciling two usually conflicting requirements: rapid heat equilibration and high thermoresistive sensitivity. P(DMAA-co-AAM)/h-BN composite ionogels are fabricated via in-situ UV-initiated free-radical polymerization, in which N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) and acrylamide (AAM) form a mechanically compliant and ion-transportable copolymer network, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) provides thermally activated ionic pathways, and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets introduce filler-assisted thermal transport pathways. Systematic optimization reveals that a DMAA-to-AAM mass ratio of 3:1 with 20 wt% h-BN yields the optimal synergy among mechanical flexibility, thermal transport, and ionic conduction. The resulting composite achieves a thermal conductivity of 0.469 W/(m·K), representing a ∼160% enhancement over the pristine matrix, which effectively suppresses heat accumulation. Concurrently, the ionogel exhibits an ultra-high temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of −13.5%/°C and a thermosensitive coefficient (B value) of 3879 K within 0-20°C. Benefiting from the enhanced thermal transport performance, the dynamic thermal response speed of this series of ionogel sensors (30°C → 35°C) is significantly accelerated with the increase of h-BN loading: the T90 response time of the 10 wt%, 20 wt%, and 30 wt% h-BN samples is 32.40 s, 24.34 s, and 15.14 s respectively. Meanwhile, the devices can still maintain stable and reversible resistance switching characteristics over 50 heating-cooling cycles. This study achieves the synergistic enhancement of the thermal management and temperature sensing performance of the ionogel, providing an ideal material platform for the next-generation wearable electronic devices and intelligent thermal management systems.

The removal of selenium (IV) from aqueous solutions was the focus of research that led to the discovery of a novel type of composite adsorbent called FeS@h-BN nanocomposite . This adsorbent was studied, characterized, and put to use in a fixed bed column. SEM, FTIR, XRD, and XPS analyses were conducted to learn more about the coated layer's surface properties. The effect of several adsorbent materials on the remediation of Se(IV) in dynamic water was examined. The Adams-Bohart model, the Thomas model, and the Yoon-Nelson model were all utilized to get optimal fits to the kinetic data obtained from the adsorption process. Moreover, the Adams-Bohart model was only applicable to the beginning portion of the dynamic behavior of the FeS and FeS@h-BN columns. The Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models were sufficient for describing the breakthrough curve under all experimental conditions. For this dynamic process, the theoretical breakthrough curve profile was compared to an experimentally derived profile. It was discovered that FeS@h-BN nanocomposites are the most effective at removing Se(IV), and the adsorption of Se(IV) by a variety of adsorbent materials is enough for all three dynamic models.

In this study, a novel Ni-Cu/OH-BN(h)-PA-Zn-DCD composite coatings with excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance was developed, which may be used in the field of seawater corrosion. By the self-assembling of phytic acid, Zn 2+ and dicyandiamide to grow PA-Zn-DCD structure onto the surface of hydroxylated BN(h) nanosheets, obtained a hybrid denoted as OH-BN(h)-PA-Zn-DCD, which was doped into Ni-Cu coating by pulse electrodeposition. The results show that OH-BN(h) and OH-BN(h)-PA-Zn-DCD hybrids affect the surface morphology, roughness, microcrystals size and thickness of the composite coatings. Simultaneously, compared with NC coating and NC/HB-1.5 coating, NC/BP-1.5 coating has the highest microhardness (559.26 Hv), the lowest friction coefficient (0.172), and the best corrosion resistance (i corr is 3.551 × 10 −8 A·cm −2 , R ct is 1.098 × 10 6 Ω·cm 2 ). In addition, the EIS results of the immersed specimens showed that the NC/BP-1.5 composite coating still has good protective ability after soaking for 15 days in simulated seawater medium (R ct is 7.434 × 10 6 Ω·cm 2 ).
