Study on performance regulation of electro-mechanical properties 3D printed BaTiO3/HA porous structure composite ceramic

Xin Zhao,Jimin Chen,Yong Zeng

BaTiO 3 /Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 composite ceramic is an outstanding representative of piezoelectric biomaterials, with excellent biocompatibility and piezoelectric effect, and has potential applications in the field of bone tissue repair. In this work, vat photopolymerization 3D printing technology was used to fabricate triply periodic minimal surface structure BaTiO 3 /Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 composite ceramic bone tissue scaffolds with different pore sizes and porosity, and their mechanical and electrical properties were studied. First, the ceramic slurry configuration process was optimized to obtain a ceramic slurry with high solid content (45 vol%) and excellent rheological properties. Then the effect of sintering temperature on microstructure, relative density, mechanical properties, and electrical properties is discussed. The results show that when sintering at 1300 °C, the BaTiO 3 /Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 composite ceramic has the highest relative density (99.18 %), the highest compressive strength (44 MPa), large relative dielectric constant (379–389), and low dielectric loss. The polarization electric field strength of the BaTiO 3 /Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 composite ceramic was set to 15 kV/cm through the test of the hysteresis loop. Finally, based on multi-physics coupled finite element simulation, the effects of different porosity and different pore sizes on stress distribution and piezoelectric potential were analyzed, and the relationship between them was explored through experiments. The results show that as the porosity increases and the pore size decreases, the mechanical properties of the scaffold decrease significantly, and its compressive strength ranges between 1.67 and 4.26 MPa; as the porosity increases and the pore size increases, the piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) of the scaffold showed a decreasing trend, and its d 33 ranged between 2 and 9 pC/N. The mechanical and electrical properties of the scaffold meet the performance requirements of cancellous bone. In summary, this work provides a strategy for the application of customized BaTiO 3 /Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 composite ceramic scaffolds in new-generation orthopedic implants.

Polymer composites with Au@Ag/BaTiO3 nanofibers towards synergistic enhancement of dielectric constant and breakdown strength

Yihui Qian,Wenqing Xue,Shuimiao Xia,Zhicheng Shi

The development of advanced electronic equipment provides new opportunities for the application of polymer films. However, polymer films are constrained by their relatively low energy storage density. To overcome this challenge, Au@Ag/BaTiO 3 nanofibers with different sputtering time are designed and prepared by the electrospinning and sputtering method. Experimental results show that the metal nanoparticles improve the charge storage capacity of the polymer and greatly elevate the dielectric constant. The limitation of charge carriers by the minuscule metal nanoparticles considerably increases the breakdown strength. Au@Ag/BaTiO 3 /P(VDF-HFP) composite film achieved the maximum discharge energy density of 13.93 J cm −3 at 655 kV mm −1 , which represents a 124% increase compared to P(VDF-HFP). This contribution provides a new and feasible direction for ceramic nanofibers to optimize the energy storage capacity of composite films in dielectric capacitors.

Improving dielectric and energy storage properties in polyvinylidene fluoride via introducing Au/Ag/BaTiO3 composite skeletons

Shuimiao Xia,Yang Quan,Zelong Chang,Davoud Dastan,Zhicheng Shi

High-performance polymer composites with excellent dielectric and energy storage capabilities are urgently needed for advanced electronic power systems, but traditional strategies have been challenging to balance high dielectric constant, low loss and breakdown strength. Herein, an innovative Au/Ag/BaTiO 3 composite skeleton is prepared by loading Au/Ag bimetallic nanoparticles onto BaTiO 3 . In which, Ag nanoparticles are loaded inside of BaTiO 3 by in-situ growth. The Au nanoparticles are loaded on the surface of BaTiO 3 via physical vapor deposition. The BaTiO 3 skeleton plays a dual role in high polarization and blocking the formation of conductive pathways by metal nanoparticles. The results show that the Au/Ag/BaTiO 3 /PVDF nanocomposites exhibit a high dielectric constant of 56.6 at 10 kHz, which is 590 % higher than that of pure PVDF ( 8.2@10 kHz) due to the micro-capacitors effect induced by Au/Ag bimetallic nanoparticles. Due to the Coulomb blockade effect of Au nanoparticles, the dielectric loss of the composites is only 0.037 at 10 kHz, which is 24.5 % lower than that of pure PVDF ( 0.049@10 kHz). Notably, the nanocomposite achieves simultaneously a breakdown strength of 294 kV/mm and an energy density of 6.9 J/cm 3 , which are 141 % and 578 % of pure PVDF, respectively. Mechanical tests show that the skeleton also improves the Young's modulus of the composites (1700 MPa compared to 520 MPa for PVDF). The results demonstrate the potential of Au/Ag/BaTiO 3 composite skeletons for high-performance dielectric applications and provide a new strategy for designing advanced polymer composites.

Multiple roles of rare earth Sm3+ in BaTiO3 nanoparticles: Photoluminescence, optical bandgap tunability, and electrocatalytic activity

Min Zhang,Xu Wang,Chaoyong Deng

A series of rare earth Sm 3 + -doped BaTiO 3 (BTO: x Sm 3 + ) samples were prepared in this work through high-temperature solid-state reaction. Their microstructure, photoluminescence, optical, and electrocatalytic OER properties were studied. As the concentration of Sm 3 + ions increased, there was a concentration dependent increase in luminescence intensity and optical bandgap. Rare earth doping significantly reduced the OER overpotential (from 509 mV to 316 mV), and under near-ultraviolet excitation at 408 nm, an orange-red emission ( λ e m = 595 nm) was observed. The results indicate that the prepared materials are suitable for the design and application of optoelectronic devices.

Strongly enhancing the energy storage properties and stability of amorphous BaTiO3 thin films via ions doping

Ruiling Chang,Zhonghua Yao,Yutong Xing,Jun Wang,Hua Hao,Minghe Cao,Hanxing Liu

Amorphous thin films with high power density and breakdown strength satisfy the needs of advanced power electronic systems. Nonetheless, improving the energy storage density of amorphous films is critical for addressing the growing demand for electricity. We apply high spontaneous polarization BaTiO 3 as the main component to make (1-x)Ba(Ti 0.99 Mn 0.02 )O 3 -xBiFeO 3 ((1-x)BTM-xBF) thin films. Doping BiFeO 3 (BF) synergistically boosts polarization. The introduction of amorphous phases and Mn ions enhances the breakdown strength. The results demonstrate that, at x = 0.10, the film can achieve both a high efficiency of 80.3 % and an excellent energy storage density of 111.3 J cm -3 . Moreover, the film has a strong thermal stability within a broad range of 20 to 160 °C, as well as the cycling reliability is as high as 10 5 times. The present study offers a practical approach to develop film capacitors with outstanding energy storage capabilities.

Xue Zhang,Chao Yin,Changhai Zhang,Xu Tong,Jianzeng Guo,Tiandong Zhang,Xubin Wang,Qingguo Chi

Dielectric film capacitors, with remarkable high-power densities, charge-discharge speed, and thermal stability, are promising candidates in advanced power electronics technology. However, the capacitor films still face bottleneck problems of low energy storage density and high energy loss. This study presents a novel modification method designed to synergistically enhance both the breakdown strength and polarization properties of barium carbonate (BaTiO 3 , BTO)-based composite films through Zr 4+ doping and sodium bismuth titanate (Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 , NBT) solid-solution modification. The 0.94BaZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 -0.06NBT composite films synthesized on Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si substrates by sol-gel method exhibit exceptional energy storage performance. Notably, the composite films achieve an impressive recoverable energy density ( W rec ) of 62.08 J/cm 3 and a high charge-discharge efficiency( ղ ) of 85.18 % at the electric field of 6117 kV/cm. The promising results highlight the tremendous potential of the modified BTO-based composite films for transformative applications in advanced energy storage systems.

Yan Xu,Shiman Yang,Cheng Liu,Haoyu Wu,Kaiping Huang,Wenhui Xu,Jiahe Wang,Yichun Ding

The advancement of wearable electronics for personalized healthcare demands flexible, high-performance pressure sensors capable of detecting both subtle physiological signals and large mechanical motions. In this work, we present a highly sensitive piezoelectric pressure sensor based on a micro-textured PVDF-TrFE/BaTiO3 composite nanofiber mat, fabricated via a facile electrospinning process. A commercial paper napkin was employed as a template collector to directly imprint a micro-structured architecture onto the nanofiber mat, eliminating the need of complex processes. The addition of BaTiO3 (BTO) nanoparticles significantly enhanced the piezoelectric response. The optimized piezoelectric sensor demonstrated outstanding performance with a sensitivity of ~197 mV/kPa, a fast response time of 3.5 ms, excellent frequency stability, and durability over 5000 loading cycles. Practical applicability was successfully verified through real-time monitoring of diverse physiological activities including arterial pulse, respiration, vocal vibrations, eye blinking, joint motion, and plantar pressure detection. These results underscore the potential of our sensor for use in wearable health monitoring, sports biomechanics, and human-machine interfaces, offering a scalable and cost-effective route to high-performance pressure sensing.

Improved breakdown strength and energy density of polyimide composites by interface engineering between BN and BaTiO3 fibers

Baoquan Wan,Haiyu Li,Yunhui Xiao,Zhongbin Pan,Qiwei Zhang

Conventionally, interface effects between polymers and fillers are essential for determining the breakdown strength and energy storage density of polymer-based dielectric composites. In this study, we found that interface effects between different fillers have similar behavior. BN and BaTiO 3 fiber composite fillers with three different interface bonding strengths were successfully achieved by controlling composite processes (BT-fiber/BN < BT-fiber@BN < BT-fiber&BN), and introduced into a polyimide (PI) matrix to form composite films . Considerably enhanced breakdown strength and energy storage density were obtained in BT-fiber&BN/PI composites owing to strong interface bonding, compared to other two composite fillers, which are well supported by the data from the finite element simulation. Specifically, PI composites with only 3 wt% BT-fiber&BN possess an optimized energy storage density of approximately 4.25 J/cm 3 at 4343 kV/cm. These results provide an effective way for adjusting and improving the energy storage properties of polymer-based composites.

Efficient polysulfide trapping in lithium–sulfur batteries using ultrathin and flexible BaTiO3/graphene oxide/carbon nanotube layers

Jing Wang,Zhe Shi,Yufeng Luo,Datao Wang,Hengcai Wu,Qunqing Li,Shoushan Fan,Ju Li,Jiaping Wang

Ultrathin and flexible layers containing BaTiO3 (BTO) nanoparticles, graphene oxide (GO) sheets, and carbon nanotube (CNT) films (BTO/GO@CNT) are used to trap solvated polysulfides and alleviate the shuttle effect in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In the functional layers, the CNT films build a conductive framework, and the GO sheets form a support membrane for the uniform dispersion of BTO nanoparticles. BTO nanoparticles without ferroelectricity (nfBTO) can trap polysulfides more effectively by chemical interaction compared to BTO nanoparticles with ferroelectricity (fBTO). A Li–S cell with the nfBTO/GO@CNT functional layer exhibits a reversible capacity of 824.5 mA h g−1 over 100 cycles at 0.2 C. At a high sulfur loading of 5.49 mg cm−2, an electrode with the functional layer shows an areal capacity of 5.15 mA h cm−2 at 0.1 C, demonstrating the nfBTO/GO@CNT functional layer's potential in developing high-performance Li–S batteries.

Entropy-engineered BaTiO3-based perovskite ceramics via A/B site synergetic design to enhance energy storage properties

Xiaowei Zhu,Wei Liu,Guobin Zhu,Siyu Xiong,Deqin Chen,Xiuyun Lei,Laijun Liu,Chunchun Li

The present study reports on entropy-engineered perovskite ceramics (Ca1/3Sr1/3Ba1/3)(SnxTi1−x)O3 (CSBTO-xSn) with varying Sn-doping levels (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3), achieved through synergistic compositional design in both the A-sites and B-sites of the perovskite. Increasing the Sn-doping content induces a transition in configuration entropy from medium to high values. Notably, at an optimal composition of x = 0.1, the ceramic exhibits exceptional energy storage characteristics including an ultrahigh recoverable energy density (Wrec) of 5.05 J cm−3 and a high efficiency (η) of 82.56% at an electric field strength (Eb) of 540 kV cm−1 over a wide temperature range spanning from 30 to 100 °C and frequencies ranging from 1 Hz to 200 Hz. Furthermore, this ceramic demonstrates remarkable charge–discharge properties with a discharge energy density (Wdis) of 2.94 J cm−3 and a rapid discharge rate of t0.9 ∼ 67 ns. This study underscores the effectiveness of entropy engineering as a viable approach for developing advanced energy storage capacitors.

Interface-Engineered PVDF/BaTiO3 Composite Nanofibers With Amino-Terminated Liquid Butadiene Rubber for Flexible Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting

Chunjin Ai,Weigang Zhang,Yucheng Pan

Self-powered flexible piezoelectric devices based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) face a critical trade-off between piezoelectric output and mechanical flexibility. In this study, an amine-terminated liquid butadiene rubber (ATPB) toughened PVDF/BaTiO 3 (BTO) flexible nanofiber membrane is fabricated via electrospinning to achieve an optimized balance between piezoelectric output and mechanical durability. The ATPB coating serves as a low-modulus elastomeric interphase on BTO nanoparticles, mitigating the modulus mismatch and suppressing interfacial stress concentration while maintaining high ductility, with elongation at break exceeding 33%. Through the combined effects of chemical hydrogen bonding from ATPB and heterogeneous nucleation of BTO, the relative content of polar β-phase reaches 62.4% (Lambert–Beer law) and 60.1% (multi-peak intensity ratio method), with a β-phase absolute crystallinity of 33.38%. The assembled piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) produces a stable open-circuit voltage of 10–15 V, representing an approximately 2–3 fold enhancement over pure PVDF devices. The short-circuit current reaches 7 μA, with a peak power density of ~4 μW cm −2 , and the device retains ~92.3% output after 5000 cycles. This research provides an effective strategy for developing flexible PVDF-based materials for energy harvesting and wearable sensors.

3D-printed BaTiO3-modified PCL/β-TCP scaffolds with multimodal optimization for enhanced critical-size bone regeneration

Liu Xuanhao,Zhang Jing,Xu Biying,Xu Yang,Wang Yuxin,Huang Zhi,Liu Bin,Fuxiang Song

Multimodal optimization improved scaffold structure, mechanics, and bioactivity. • Low-dose BT generated a detectable but mild local piezoelectric response. • PTB4 achieved the best overall balance of printability and biological performance. • PTB4 enhanced osteogenic differentiation and VEGF-related endothelial responses. • PTB4 promoted osteogenesis–angiogenesis coupling and calvarial bone regeneration. Critical-size bone defects (CSDs) remain a major clinical challenge. Although three-dimensional (3D) printing enables precise structural control and defect-specific scaffold fabrication, conventional polymer-based scaffolds often exhibit insufficient mechanical strength and limited osteogenic activity. In this study, poly(ε-caprolactone)/β-tricalcium phosphate (PCL/β-TCP) scaffolds containing 0, 1, 2, 4, or 8 wt% barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BT) were fabricated by direct ink writing. Their rheology, microstructure, mechanical properties, local electromechanical response, cytocompatibility, angiogenesis-related activity, osteogenic differentiation, and bone regeneration in vivo were evaluated. All formulations exhibited suitable printability and regular porous structures. Moderate BT incorporation increased surface roughness and mechanical strength, with compressive strength remaining within the range of human cancellous bone. Piezoresponse force microscopy confirmed a detectable but mild local piezoelectric response. However, its direct osteogenic contribution was not isolated from other BT-related material effects and requires further verification. All scaffolds exhibited good cytocompatibility. PTB4 showed the most favorable biological performance, including enhanced MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation, increased ALP-positive area, greater mineralized deposition, and more pronounced VEGF-related fluorescence in HUVECs. After 12 weeks in a rat calvarial critical-size defect model, PTB4 exhibited significantly higher bone volume fraction and bone mineral density than the blank and PT groups. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses showed more extensive new bone formation, collagen deposition, and stronger osteogenesis–angiogenesis coupling. Overall, PTB4 achieved the best balance among printability, mechanical compatibility, cytocompatibility, angiogenesis-related activity, and osteogenic performance, supporting low-dose BT modification as a promising strategy for safe, printable scaffolds for critical-size craniofacial and oral bone defect repair.
