MIL-53(Fe)@BiOBr/TCN/Ti photoanode assembled visible light responsive photocatalytic fuel cell to enhance rhodamine B degradation and electricity generation

Zhuofan Han,Dengjie Zhong,Yunlan Xu,Haixing Chang,Yi Liu,Lin Dong,Nianbing Zhong

In this research, MIL-53(Fe)@BiOBr/TCN/Ti photoanode was created using the secondary silica sol drop coating method, and assembled with Cu cathode to form photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) to degrade rhodamine B and generate electricity. The resulting PFC has high visible light response and photocatalytic activity . It has a rhodamine B degradation efficiency of 92.19%, a maximum power density of 6.2 μW cm −2 , and a maximum photocurrent density of 0.11 mA cm −2 . Its strong photocatalysis capabilities benefits from the wider light absorption range and lower charge carrier recombination rate of the photoanode. The double Z-scheme heterojunction formed among BiOBr, MIL-53(Fe) and TCN in the composite catalyst of the photoanode provide more transfer channels for photogenerated e − and encourage the separation of e − -h + pairs. ∙OH and ∙O - 2 are the main active substances for rhodamine B degradation. This study offers a novel approach to the development of high-efficiency photoanodes for PFC.

A novel V/S co-doped BiOBr catalyst for high-efficiency catalytic reduction of toxic organic and hexavalent chromium pollutants under dark

Mengistu Tadesse Mosisa,Pengkun Zhang,Zhengjie Su,Binghong Wu,Longyan Chen,Yiqiang Liao,Ambar Farooq,Dongfang Lu,Adugna Boke Abdeta,Dong-Hau Kuo,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen

Organic pollutants in industrial and agricultural wastewater can be dangerous to both human health and the environment. Therefore, it is important to develop methods for continuous catalytic reduction of these pollutants under dark conditions as sunlight has geographical and temporal limitations due to different regions, weather conditions, and Earth's rotation . This could have significant implications for practical wastewater treatment . In this study, we successfully synthesized bimetallic vanadium bismuth oxy-sulfo bromide (labeled as VBiOSBr) catalysts using a simple precipitation method by doping V/S into BiOBr to from (Bi,V)(S,O)Br. The morphology, structure, optical absorption properties, electron-hole recombination rate, and reduction performance of the catalysts were examined in detail. The catalyst displayed a tetragonal phase with an energy band gap and specific surface area of approximately 1.93 eV and 22.1 m 2 /g, respectively. The 1-VBiOSBr catalyst prepared with n (V): n (Bi): n (KBr): n (C 2 H 5 NS) = 1: 1: 1: 1 had the best catalytic activity . Within just 14 min, this catalyst removed 98.7% and 96.96% of 4-NP and Cr 6+ , respectively. The VBiOSBr catalyst remained stable and efficient even after the seventh run, still achieving a removal rate of 94.7%. The study proposed a possible mechanism for 4-NP and Cr 6+ reduction activity. The catalyst's simple manufacturing process and its ability to reduce pollutants under dark conditions make it a promising system for practical application in the continuous removal of organic pollutants. So, the VBiOSBr bimetallic catalyst has great potential as a candidate for wastewater treatment technologies.

Fabricating photoelectrochemical aptasensor for selectively monitoring microcystin-LR residues in fish based on visible light-responsive BiOBr nanoflakes/N-doped graphene photoelectrode

Xiaojiao Du,Ding Jiang,Liming Dai,Lei Zhou,Nan Hao,Jing Qian,Baijing Qiu,Kun Wang

The presence of microcystins in fish has been augmenting the risk of toxicity to animal and human health. Herein, a selective and sensitive method for detecting microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in fish samples by integrating the photoelectrochemical (PEC) technique and the specific recognition ability of aptamer was developed. Specifically, as an efficient PEC transducer, the BiOBr nanoflakes/N-doped graphene p–n heterojunction electrode was utilized as the aptamer immobilization platform via the π–π stacking interaction, which would be a biosensor enabling the convenient and exquisite PEC analysis. Subsequently, the PEC response of constructed aptasensor was specific binding to MC-LR. Other isoforms did not interfere with the detection process, and thus, it could be applied for the highly selective determination of MC-LR level. Under the optimized condition, the PEC signal versus the logarithm of the MC-LR concentration was in good linear relationship ranging from 0.1   pM to 100   nM with detection limit about 0.03   pM. The constructed method was employed to analyze fish samples collected from the local supermarket. The overall analytical recovery of MC-LR in the fish matrices ranged from 97.8 to 101.6%, with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.52–5.14%, implying it would have great potential in farm product analysis.

Superwetting sea urchin-like BiOBr@Co3O4 nanowire clusters-coated copper mesh with efficient emulsion separation and photo-Fenton-like degradation of soluble dye

Thabang Mokoba,Zhikai Li,Tian C. Zhang,Shaojun Yuan

The development of superwetting materials for the separation of oily wastewater and emulsified oil/water mixtures has been accelerated to handle the ever-increasing oil spills from industrial and sanitary wastewaters that contain organic contaminates (e.g., dyes). Herein, sea urchin-like BiOBr@Co 3 O 4 nanowire clusters were fabricated on the copper mesh substrates via combination of hydrothermal synthesis and calcination of Co 3 O 4 nanowire clusters, and hydrothermal deposition of a BiOBr photocatalyst. Such a hierarchical nanostructure composite membrane acquired superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobic properties, and consequently presented excellent self-cleaning and anti-fouling with an underwater oil contact angle of 160.6 ± 2°. The membrane had high emulsion separation efficiency and permeation flux for both surfactant-free (≥99.98%, up to 4656.33 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions (≥98.66%, up to 887.67 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). Moreover, the deposition of BiOBr enhanced the photo-Fenton-like catalytic activity so that the membrane could degrade ≥96.0% methylene blue (50 mL, 10 ppm) within 60 min under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the as-fabricated superwetting mesh membrane demonstrated great reusability as well as good mechanical and corrosion resistance when exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Thus, this study presents a novel high-performance superwetting material with great potential in efficient removal of insoluble and soluble organic contaminants from oily wastewater.

A label-free photoelectrochemical immunosensor for prostate specific antigen detection based on Ag2S sensitized Ag/AgBr/BiOBr heterojunction by in-situ growth method

Qiying Zhu,Canguo Li,Huiqin Chang,Meng Jiang,Xiaokai Sun,Wei Jing,Haowei Huang,Di Huang,Ling Kong,Zhiwei Chen,Feng Sang,Xiuzhen Zhang

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, and its early detection is vital to saving the lives of patients. In this research, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical immunosensor was designed for sensitive detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA). Ag 2 S sensitized on Ag/AgBr/BiOBr heterojunction could effectively inhibit photogenic holes recombination and improve photocurrent response and sensitivity. Ascorbic acid was an effective electron donor, which can effectively eliminate photo-generated holes. The photocurrent reduced linearly with the logarithm of PSA concentration ranged from 0.001 to 50 ng·mL −1 and the limit of detection was 0.25 pg·mL −1 . The designed sensor had the advantages of wide linear range, good stability, high reproducibility, and good selectivity. This study not only provided a method for efficient and sensitive detection of PSA, but also provided valuable reference ideas for the detection of other tumor markers.

Core-shell BiOBr/BiOI/MIL-53(Fe)-min double Z-type heterojunction for efficient and stable photocatalytic degradation from small molecules to microplastics

Shuyue He,Jincheng Dai,Gang Liu,Xiyu Song,Hongjuan Zhang,Ruyi Xie

The persistent accumulation of organic pollutants in aquatic environments poses serious risks to ecosystems and public health. In this study, a double Z-type photocatalyst BiOBr/BiOI/MIL-53(Fe)-min was successfully fabricated by a two-step solvothermal-hydrothermal synthesis method. Characterization revealed tightly stacked BiOBr/BiOI nanosheets uniformly coating rod-like the 2-methylimidazole-modified metal–organic framework MIL-53(Fe) (MIL-53(Fe)-min), forming a core-shell structure with intimate interface contact. The formation of a unique double Z-type heterojunction significantly inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and optimized the charge carrier transfer pathway. Meanwhile, the surface stacked catalyst nanosheets not only improve the utilization efficiency of photons, but also greatly increase the contact area between active radicals and reactants. Under visible light irradiation, BBF-20 composite photocatalyst demonstrated a tetracyclines (TC) degradation rate of 90.6% within 100 min, with 80.3% of its activity retained after five cycles. Notably, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics achieved 56% weight loss after being treated by BBF-20 for 8 h. The main active species during degradation process were determined through quenching experiment and EPR tests. HPLC-MS analysis proposed the possible degradation pathways for TC and PET microplastics. Based on experimental results, a double Z-type heterojunction mechanism was proposed. This work presents a novel strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts to degrade antibiotics and microplastics in complex aquatic environments.

Surface Self-Assembly of Tannic Acid Network to Enhance Wastewater Treatment and Oil-Water Separation Performance of Dual-Bismuth BiOBr–BiOCOOH/PVDF Membranes

Dong Chen,Rui Zhang,Jie He,Maoqin Xu,Zixi Li,Yujie Liu,Lin Peng

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) continues to attract researchers in the field of membrane separation due to its many outstanding properties. However, fully modifying it into a multifunctional composite membrane with ultra-high stability remains a significant challenge. In this work, a uniform BiOBr-BiOCOOH/PVDF composite membrane was prepared by incorporating catalytic materials into the casting solution through an in-situ deposition method. The effects of different loadings of catalytic materials on the performance of the p-n heterojunction catalyst were investigated. The composite membrane surface was modified by self-assembling tannic acid (TA) and subsequent crosslinking, and its oil-water separation performance and resistance to acidic and alkaline conditions were evaluated. Using dyes, antibiotics, and oily wastewater as representative pollutants, the membrane’s rejection and catalytic capabilities were thoroughly analyzed, achieving average rejection rates of 95%, 86%, and 99%, respectively. The changes in the crystalline phases of PVDF molecules, the physical morphology, and the chemical structure of the composite membranes were thoroughly discussed. Catalytic studies demonstrated that the catalytic materials within the composite membrane possess highly efficient light absorption capabilities, achieving photodegradation rates of over 99% for various pollutants and over 98% for complex wastewater containing mixed dyes. The surface modification via self-assembly endowed the membrane with hydrophilic and oleophobic properties, resulting in high rejection efficiency for oil-in-water emulsions and excellent performance in separating oilfield industrial wastewater, along with strong self-cleaning ability. The study also highlights the composite membrane's adaptability in extremely acidic and alkaline environments, demonstrating its outstanding physicochemical structural stability.

BiOBr/MXene/gC3N4 Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalysts mediated by oxygen vacancies and MXene quantum dots for tetracycline degradation: Process, mechanism and toxicity analysis

Kexuan Gao,Li-an Hou,Xiaoqiang An,Doudou Huang,Yu Yang

The rapid recombination rate of photogenerated charges make the rational design of high-performance stable photocatalysts challenging. Herein, the features of heterojunctions, oxygen vacancies (OVs), and MXene quantum dots (MQDs) were simultaneously collected in CBM (gC 3 N 4 /BiOBr/MXene) using a simple solvothermal method for the first time. OVs promoted the chemisorption of O 2 , MQDs not only accelerated electron transport but also promoted a photogenerated charge to selectively generate singlet oxygen, 99% of the tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) was degraded by CBM within 30 min under visible light irradiation. Thirteen intermediates and possible photocatalytic degradation pathways were proposed. It was discovered that CBM is nontoxic to the environment but can swiftly produce an excellent antibacterial effect when exposed to visible light irradiation. This research provides fresh insights into the effective removal of organic pollutants from water by combining cutting-edge defect engineering and quantum dot doping technology in photocatalytic heterojunctions.

Fabrication of magnetic dual Z-scheme heterojunction materials for efficient photocatalytic performance: The study of ternary novel MIL-88A(Fe)/BiOBr/SrFe12O19 nanocomposite

Jiabao Gu,Qianwen Li,Xuanyu Long,Xiaohan Zhou,Nan Liu,Zequan Li

In this study, we synthesized the MBSr (MIL-88A(Fe)/BiOBr/SrFe 12 O 19 ) dual Z-scheme heterojunction via an accessible hydrothermal method and investigated the photocatalytic performance of MBSr composites for Rhodamine B (RhB) and Methylene blue (MB). The MBSr-1% photocatalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance, resulting the degradation rate of RhB reached approximately 96.2% within 60 min, which was higher than that of M88 (34%), BiOBr (89%) and M88/BiOBr-7% (93.7%) composites. And the MBSr-1% could eliminate 90.1% of MB within 90 min, which displayed the best photodegradation efficiency of prepared photocatalysts. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the formation of dual Z-scheme heterojunction, which enhanced visible-light absorption and facilitated the transfer of photoinduced carriers. The MBSr-1% was proved to have excellent stability and reusability after six-recycling run. Furthermore, the major reactive species were h + , •O 2 − and •OH by radical trapping experiments. Finally, a possible photocatalytic pathway and mechanism of MBSr photocatalysts was proposed.

Rui Zhang,Ziyin Chen,Yu Li,Chen Zhao,Lu Cai,Junrong Yu,Ze Yang,Jiacheng Jiang

The unique properties of MOFs make them the best candidates for catalytic and photocatalytic applications. In this research, the NH 2 -UiO-66 material was prepared by solvothermal method , and different content of NH 2 -UiO-66 was added before the composite growth of Bi 2 S 3 and BiOBr nanomaterials to obtain the NH 2 -UiO-66/BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 ternary composite material. In order to investigate the relationship between the structure and properties of the catalyst, XRD , FT-IR, SEM , HRTEM , UV–vis DRS, XPS and other characterization technologies were used to analyze the structure, morphology, optical properties of the samples, showing that NH 2 -UiO-66/BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 have been successfully synthesized. Their photocatalytic performance was evaluated based on the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride and rhodamine B under visible light . The results show that 2% NH 2 -UiO-66/BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 has better photocatalytic activity than other materials. Moreover, NH 2 -UiO-66/BiOBr/Bi 2 S 3 also demonstrated good photocatalytic reusability and stability. The formation of Bi 2 S 3 and BiOBr heterojunctions and the introduction of NH 2 -UiO-66 with more active sites increase the carrier performance and separation efficiency. Then the valence band and conduction band values of the semiconductor material are calculated through the M-S curve, combined with the forbidden bandwidth deduced by UV–vis DRS and the experimental results of radical trapping, a double Z-type electron transfer mechanism suitable for this system is inferred. Finally, taking RhB as an example, the degradation path of dye pollutants was studied.

Insights into the photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate by visible light over BiOBr-cyclodextrin polymer complexes for efficient degradation of dye pollutants in water

Hu Du,Xueyao Wang,Yalan Zhang,Guizhou Xu,Yizhou Tu,Xun Jia,Daishe Wu,Xianchuan Xie,Yang Liu

The combination of adsorption-photocatalysis and advanced oxidation processes (AOP) based on sulfate (SO 4 •− ) for the treatment of organic pollution has the advantages of a high degradation rate, affordability, and an absence of secondary pollution. This study combined amphiphilic super-crosslinked porous cyclodextrin resin (PBCD-B-D), bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr), a composite material with dual functions of adsorption and photocatalysis , and AOP based on SO 4 •− for the treatment of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in water. The combination of BiOBr/PBCD-B-D (BOP-24) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) showed an optimal adsorption–photocatalytic effect. Compared to the 24% PBCD-B-D (BOP-24)/visible light system, the degradation efficiency of BOP-24/PMS system for AO7 is increased from 64.1% to 99.2% within shorter time (∼60 min). Moreover, the BOP-24/PMS system showed a wide range of pH application (pH = 3–11). The addition of Cl − , SO 4 2− , and NO 3 − promoted the photodegradation of AO7, whereas the addition of CO 3 2− did not. The free radical capture experiments of the BOP-24/PMS AO7 degradation system showed that •O 2 − , h + , •OH, and SO 4 •− are reactive species. The proposed BOP-24 system used adsorption and a unique cavity structure to enrich AO7 near the active site, thereby reducing the path for PMS activation . PMS also acted as an electron (e − ) acceptor to promote the transfer of part of e − to PMS, thereby further improving the efficiency of carrier separation. The proposed system is an effective method to improve the degradation of pollutants and broadens the range of application of SO 4 •− -based AOP technology.

BiOBr microspheres anchored with Cu2O nanoparticles and rGO: A Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for efficient reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation

Jian Ma,Congjie Liang,Changjiang Yu,Huaming Li,Hui Xu,Yingjie Hua,Chongtai Wang

Photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is an effective way to reduce its environmental risk. However, it remains a challenge to achieve a high removal rate in mild conditions. In order to efficiently remove Cr(VI) from water, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction composite photocatalyst rCB-20 (Cu 2 O/rGO/BiOBr, 20% Cu 2 O) was successfully prepared using a simple two-step strategy in this work. The characterizations of the catalyst show that the Z-scheme heterojunction formed between Cu 2 O and BiOBr is favorable for facilitating the separation of photogenerated carriers. The existence of rGO can reduce the resistance of electron transport. Therefore, the composite photocatalyst exhibits a very high photocatalytic activity in the photoreduction of Cr(VI). For example, using it to completely remove Cr(VI) with a concentration of 20 mg•L −1 in the pH = 4 solution only requires 40 min. Even the complete removal of the same concentration of Cr(VI) in neutral water at pH 7 does not take more than 90 min. Meanwhile, it possesses a high stability in catalytic activity and structure.
