Morphology and facet engineering have been proved efficient strategies to prepare high-performance photoelectrochemical (PEC) materials. WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction photoanodes with different morphologies were prepared by simply controlling the amount of electrodeposited charge. The coral-like WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode with the orientation growth of {110} and {011} active facets of BiVO 4 exhibited the optimal PEC performance due to significantly enhanced separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers, while the exposure of {−121} facets showed negative effects. 4.71 mA·cm −2 and 2.9 mA·cm −2 of photocurrent densities were obtained for sulfite and water oxidation , respectively, superior to most reported results. Subsequently, a photoelectrochemical-chlorine (PEC-Cl) system was constructed for antibiotic wastewater detoxification with hydrogen recovery. The analysis results indicated that the system can quickly and effectively remove sulfamethoxazole and reduce its toxicity concurrent with high hydrogen yield. The reactive chlorine species (RCS), especially Cl 2 · − and ClO·, dominated the sulfamethoxazole removal. Possible degradation pathways of sulfamethoxazole were also elucidated.

The massive emission of bisphenol A (BPA) has imposed adverse effects on both ecosystems and human health. Herein, nanoporous MoS 2 @BiVO 4 photoanodes were fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates for photoelectrocatalytic degradation of BPA. The photocurrent density of the optimized photoanode (MoS 2 -3@BiVO 4 ) was 5.4 times as that of BiVO 4 photoanode at 1.5 V vs . Ag/AgCl under visible light illumination, which was ascribed to the reduced recombination of photogenerated charge carriers of the well-designed hybrid structure. 10 ppm of BPA could be completely degraded in 75 min by MoS 2 -3@BiVO 4 photoanode, with a bias of 1.5 V vs . Ag/AgCl and 100 mM of NaCl as the supporting electrolyte. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radicals scavenging experiments confirmed that chlorine oxide radical (•ClO) played a dominant role in the degradation of BPA. 14 intermediates were detected and identified during photoelectrocatalytic degradation of BPA by MoS 2 -3@BiVO 4 photoanode and 3 pathways were proposed based on the above intermediates. The hybrid film exhibited high stability and reusability, and promising application potential in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution.

Configuring new nanostructured photocatalyst with high efficient photocatalystic capabilities is meaningfully for environmental pollution control. Herein, a p-n heterojunction nanostructured photocatalyst of Ni(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 was well designed and successfully fabricated via a facile solvothermal method, in which Ni(OH) 2 is a wide band-gap semiconductor. Being applied for photo-degradation of anion organic dye, it is found such Ni(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 heterostructures can not only increase the specific surface area and enhance the light response, but also effectively facilitate the photo-generated charge separation and transfer. As a result, 0.5-Ni(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 can possess a photocatalytic capability of 96% and a reaction rate constant 1.9572 h −1 within 90 min irradiation, being 6 and 18 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 (16%, 0.1098 h −1 ). This study presents a new means to design a kind of high efficient wide band-gap semiconductor constructed BiVO 4 -based photocatalysts.

Graphene as a two-dimensional (2D) nanoplatform is beneficial for assembling a 2D heterojunction photocatalytic system to promote electron transfer in semiconductor composites. Here a BiVO4nanosheets/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) based 2D-2D heterojunction photocatalytic system as well as 0D-2D BiVO4nanoparticles/RGO and 1D-2D BiVO4nanotubes/RGO nanocomposites are fabricated by a feasible solvothermal process. During the synthesis; the growth of BiVO4and the intimate interfacial contact between BiVO4and RGO occur simultaneously. Compared to 0D-2D and 1D-2D heterojunctions, the resulting 2D-2D BiVO4nanosheets/RGO composites yield superior chemical coupling; leading to exhibit higher photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of acetaminophen under visible light irradiation. Photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent experiments revealed that the apparent electron transfer rate in 2D-2D BiVO4nanosheets/RGO composites is faster than that in 0D-2D BiVO4nanoparticles/RGO composites. The experimental findings presented here clearly demonstrate that the 2D-2D heterojunction interface can highlight the optoelectronic coupling between nanomaterials and promote the electron–hole separation. This study will motivate new developments in dimensionality factors on designing the heterojunction photocatalysts and promote their photodegradation photocatalytic application in environmental issues.Keywords:BiVO4;RGO;visible light;two-dimensional interface;photocatalysis

Compared to the traditional type II heterojunction photocatalyst (Cu2O/BiVO4), bulk BiVO4 was modified in this study by reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with a Schottky structure to optimize the coupling interface of BiVO4. Cu2O nanoparticles were then grown in situ on the RGO/BiVO4 surface to yield a heterojunction structure with an internal electric field, allowing movement of photogenerated electrons and holes in opposite directions to participate in redox reactions. The as-obtained optimized Cu2O/RGO/BiVO4 material exhibited excellent photocatalytic degradation performance towards organic pollutants. The reaction rate constant of rhodamine B (RhB) was estimated as 0.0324 min−1, which was almost 5.94, 5.15 and 1.94-fold higher than those of bare BiVO4, 4%RGO/BiVO4 and 5%Cu2O/BiVO4, respectively. Moreover, the optimized material displayed good activity in the degradation of the colorless organic contaminant tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The reaction rate constant was estimated as 0.0219 min−1, which was almost 1.6-, 1.4- and 1.63-fold higher than those of bare BiVO4, 4%RGO/BiVO4 and 5%Cu2O/BiVO4, respectively. The hole and superoxide radical worked as active species for degradation of organic matter. Such a significant increase in degradation efficiencies was attributed not only to the formation of a heterojunction structure but also to rapid electron transfer between interfaces.

In this work, a water splitting photoanode composed of a BiVO 4 thin film surface modified by the deposition of a rhodium (Rh)-doped SrTiO 3 perovskite is fabricated, and the Rh-doped SrTiO 3 outer layer exhibits special photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxygen evolution co-catalytic activity. Controlled intensity modulated photo-current spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and other electrochemical results indicate that the Rh on the perovskite provide an oxidation active site during the PEC water oxidation process by reducing the reaction energy barrier for water oxidation. Theoretical calculations indicate that the water oxidation reaction is more likely to occur on the (110) crystal plane of Rh-SrTiO 3 because the oxygen evolution reaction overpotential on the (110) crystal plane is reduced significantly. Therefore, the obtained BiVO 4 /Rh5%-SrTiO 3 photoanode exhibits an optimized PEC performance. In particular, it facilitates the saturation of the photocurrent density. Thus, the presence of doped Rh in SrTiO 3 can reduce the amount of noble metals required while achieving excellent and stable oxygen evolution properties.

Fe3O4/C/BiVO4 composite photocatalyst was fabricated successfully by a simple approach using yeast as a carbon source. Fe3O4/C/BiVO4 sample exhibited higher efficiency for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC)
as compared to pure BiVO4 under visible light. In addition, after five recycles of photodegradation of TC, Fe3O4/C/BiVO4 showed a slight loss in photocatalytic activity, which confirmed its stability and long-time reusability. The photocatalytic
mechanism was studied by active species trapping experiments, which revealed that the holes (h
+) and superoxide radical (˙O−
2) played a key role in TC degradation. Moreover, photocatalyst could be easily recycled by an external magnetic field
and reused without any loss in photocatalytic activity. This work provides a simple, eco-friendly and exemplary strategy for improving photodegradation activity of BiVO4-based photocatalyst.

Introducing appropriate amount of oxygen vacancies by hydrogenation treatment is a simple and efficient way to improve the photoelectrochemical performance of nanostructured oxide photoanodes. However, the hydrogenation effect is often not durable due to the gradual healing of oxygen vacancies at or close to surface of photoanodes. Herein, we tackled the problem by conformal coating the hydrogenated nanoporous BiVO 4 (H-BiVO 4 ) photoanode with an ultrathin layer of amorphous TiO 2 . Photoelectrochemical measurements showed that a 4 nm-thick TiO 2 layer could significantly improve the stability of H-BiVO 4 photoanode for repeated working test, with negligible influence on the initial photocurrent compared to the uncoated one. Mott–Schottky and linear sweep voltammetry measurements showed that donor density and photocurrent density of the H-BiVO 4 electrode almost decayed to the values of pristine BiVO 4 electrode after 3 h test, while the amorphous TiO 2 -coated electrode only degraded by 6% and 5% of the initial values respectively in the same period. The investigation thus suggested that the amorphous TiO 2 layer did protect the oxygen vacancies in H-BiVO 4 photoanode by isolating these oxygen vacancies from environmental oxygen, while at the same time not impeding the interfacial charge transfer to water molecules due to its leaky nature.

Black phosphorus (BP) is highly regarded in photocatalysis for its bandgap thickness dependency, high hole mobility, and broad visible light absorption. This study introduces a simple hydrothermal method to construct a BP QDs/BiVO 4 direct Z-scheme heterojunction. The composite’s crystal structure, morphology, and photochemical properties were comprehensively characterized. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated using Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible light. Notably, BP QDs 0.12% /BiVO 4 exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a 95.4 % RhB degradation after 100 min, three times higher than BiVO 4 alone. The direct Z-scheme heterojunction played a pivotal role in facilitating O 2 − and h + involvement in the degradation process. The interfacial interaction between BP QDs and BiVO 4 significantly enhanced BiVO 4 ′s visible light absorption, preserving its strong oxidation–reduction capacity. This enhancement was further corroborated by DFT simulation calculations. Overall, this study presents a novel approach for constructing efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts based on BP QDs, laying a solid foundation for their application in the field of photocatalytic degradation.

Benzene is currently recognized as one of the most toxic contaminants. Our previously published study revealed that BiVO 4 /TiO 2 is an excellent photocatalyst toward the degradation of benzene. Herein, BiVO 4 /TiO 2 has been synthesized via a sol-gel method and a facile hydrothermal route by adjusting the precursor hydrolysis rate with the use of different acids (CH 3 COOH, HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 ). The influence of these acids on the physicochemical characteristics and photocatalytic performance is discussed in detail. X-ray diffraction and N 2 sorption analyses confirm that acid has an important effect on the crystalline composition and BET specific surface area. BiVO 4 /TiO 2 synthesized in CH 3 COOH has better photocatalytic activity for the degradation of gaseous benzene than that in HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 under visible light irradiation. Results of XPS measurement demonstrate that the hydroxyl group in BiVO 4 /TiO 2 -CH 3 COOH is more abundant than that in BiVO 4 /TiO 2 -HNO 3 and BiVO 4 /TiO 2 -H 2 SO 4 . The photocurrent signal is investigated by electrochemical measurement, which indicates that more effective separation of photogenerated carriers occurs in the BiVO 4 /TiO 2 /CH 3 COOH system. It is hoped that our work can offer valuable information on the design of TiO 2 composites with enhanced properties.

Water pollution, exacerbated by industrialization, poses severe threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health, particularly due to persistent organic pollutants like dyes. To mitigate this issue, the development of effective and sustainable water treatment technologies is essential. This study presents the synthesis of a novel bismuth vanadate (BVO)/vermiculite (Vt) adsorption-photocatalytic self-cycling composite using a simple hydrothermal method. The composite's Z -scheme heterojunction structure, along with the introduction of surface oxygen vacancies, significantly reduces electron-hole recombination and enhances charge separation. These modifications lead to a 1.64-fold increase in adsorption capacity compared to Vt and a 6.4-fold improvement in photocatalytic efficiency over BVO. The material maintained a 76 % removal efficiency after five usage cycles and demonstrated high efficacy in methylene blue (MB) solutions, even at concentrations up to 300 mg/L. Moreover, the composite displayed stable performance under repeated use and in high-pollutant environments, highlighting its durability and practicality. These characteristics underscore its strong potential for widespread application in environmental remediation and sustainable water resource management, offering an innovative solution to the global challenge of water pollution.

Given the increasingly grave situation of bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance, there is an urgent demand for the development of rapid, straightforward, and highly sensitive techniques for bacterial detection and imaging. Here, a highly sensitive and label-free PEC biosensor was proposed for Gram-positive bacteria detection based on the vancomycin (Van) functionalized ITO/BiVO 4 /Au photoelectrode. The Gram-positive bacteria can be captured by the specific recognition of Van, which was immobilized AuNPs of the ITO/BiVO 4 /Au photoelectrode surface, thus enabling extreme acceleration of the detection procedure. Van not only acts as a sensitizer to increase the photocurrent but also acts as a probe molecule to specifically capture Gram-positive bacteria, achieving the signal “On-Off” response with minimized background noise. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning photoelectrochemical microscopy were used to illustrate the detection mechanism. The low detection limit of the new PEC biosensor was 15 colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL), and the detection range was 50–5 × 10 7 CFU/mL. Moreover, the PEC sensor had good stability and reproducibility, which was conducive to promoting further application and providing a foothold for ultrasensitive bacterial detection in food and environment.
