Composite phase change materials based on CuS-coated carbonized melamine foam/reduced graphene oxide frameworks for multiple energy conversion and storage applications

Sijia Hao,Yongjin Zou,Cuili Xiang,Lixian Sun,Fen Xu,Zhicong Hu

The single function and leakage of organic phase change materials (OPCMs) used alone considerably limit the scope of their large-scale applications. An efficient method of addressing this issue is by adding functional fillers and porous scaffolds to OPCMs. In this study, a novel CuS-coated carbonized melamine foam (CMF)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) framework (CMF/rGO/CuS) was developed for the preparation of stable multifunctional OPCMs. The functional materials rGO and CuS were used as reinforcing materials, and CMF was used as a supporting material. Paraffin wax (PW), a thermal storage substance, was encapsulated in the CMF/rGO/CuS framework by vacuum-assisted impregnation to obtain a PW@CMF/rGO/CuS composite with excellent comprehensive properties. When the concentration of the conductive filler CuS was 2.0 wt%, the conductivity of the PW@CMF/rGO/CuS 2.0was 73.7 % more than that of pure PW, and its photothermal conversion efficiency exceeded 90 %. Meanwhile, CMF/rGO/CuS endowed the composite with a thermal conductivity of 0.2525 W m −1  K −1 , which was 33.6 % higher than that of pure PW. Finally, PW@CMF/rGO/CuS demonstrated high thermal cycling and thermal cycling stability with good application prospects in various fields.

Structural Engineering of Hollow Microflower-like CuS@C Hybrids as Versatile Electrochemical Sensing Platform for Highly Sensitive Hydrogen Peroxide and Hydrazine Detection

Xiaoqing Ma,Kang-lai Tang,Kang Lu,Chenke Zhang,Wenbing Shi,Wenxi Zhao

Designing metal sulfides with unique configurations and exploring their electrochemical activities for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydrazine (N2H4) is challenging and desirable for various fields. Herein, hollow microflower-like CuS@C hybrids were successfully assembled and further exploited as a versatile electrochemical sensing platform for H2O2 reduction and N2H4 oxidation, of which the elaborate strategies make the perfect formation of hollow architecture, providing considerable electrocatalytic sites and fast charge transfer rate, while the appropriate introduction polydopamine-derived carbon skeleton facilitates the electronic conductivity and boosts structural robustness, thus generating wide linear range (0.05–14 and 0.01–10 mM), low detection limit (0.22 μM and 0.07 μM), and a rather low overpotential (−0.15 and −0.05 V) toward H2O2 and N2H4, as well as good selectivity, excellent reproducibility, and admirable long-term stability. It should be highlighted that the operating potentials can compare favorably with those of some reported H2O2 and N2H4 sensors based on noble metals. In addition, good recoveries and acceptable relative standard deviations (RSDs) attained in serum and water samples fully verify the accuracy and anti-interference capability of our proposed sensor systems. These results not only elucidate an effective structural nanoengineering strategy for electroanalytical science but also advance the rational utilization of H2O2 and N2H4 in practicability.

CuS@PDA–FA nanocomposites: a dual stimuli-responsive DOX delivery vehicle with ultrahigh loading level for synergistic photothermal–chemotherapies on breast cancer

Shang-Qing Zhang,Xun Liu,Qi-Xuan Sun,Omar Johnson,Ting Yang,Ming-Li Chen,Jian-Hua Wang,Wei Chen

In this study, CuS@PDA nanoparticles were synthesized and used to create a novel tumor-targeting nanocomposite platform composed of copper sulfide@polydopamine–folic acid/doxorubicin (CuS@PDA–FA/DOX) for performing both photothermal and chemotherapeutic cancer treatment. The nanocomposite platform has ultrahigh loading levels (4.2 ± 0.2 mg mg−1) and a greater photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 42.7%) than CuS/PDA alone. The uptake of CuS@PDA–FA/DOX nanocomposites is much higher in MCF-7 cells than in A549 cells because MCF-7 cells have much higher folic acid receptors than A549. Under near infrared (NIR) irradiation, the CuS@PDA–FA/DOX system using a synergistic combination of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy yields a better therapeutic effect than either photothermal therapy or chemotherapy alone. The treatment is very effective with the cell viability is only 5.6 ± 1.4%.

The CdS/CuS heterojunction prepared by room-temperature vulcanization of Cu-BTC accelerates charge carrier transfer to achieving high-efficiency photocatalytic H2 evolution

Ning Qi,Hongchao Qi,Tianrong Xiong,Youzhou He,Qinghong Cai,Zhuoqi Liu,Panyin Wang,Yongcheng Feng,Lin Chen,Bowen Lei,Xingyan Liu

The interfacial agglomeration in photocatalysts synthesized via high-temperature methods leads to hindered charge carrier mobility, severely limiting their photocatalytic performance. Herein, we introduced a room-temperature sulfidation strategy for the fabrication of CdS/CuS heterojunctions utilizing Cu-BTC. The optimized CdS/CuS composite demonstrated an exceptional hydrogen evolution rate of 14.07 mmol·h −1 ·g −1 , which was 7.5 times greater than that of pristine CdS. The slow release of Cu 2+ from Cu-BTC at room temperature effectively inhibited interfacial agglomeration. This was further confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the formation of a CdS/CuS type-II heterojunction was confirmed by Mott-Schottky measurements, Tauc analysis, and valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS) analysis. Owing to the interfacial electronic coupling of CdS/CuS, charge carrier recombination is suppressed while carrier migration and separation are accelerated, leading to a significant enhancement in the hydrogen evolution activity. This work therefore proposes a feasible room-temperature synthesis strategy for fabricating high-quality heterojunctions, which effectively suppresses interfacial agglomeration and accelerates charge carrier transfer, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic performance.

In situ growth of CuS nanoparticles on g-C3N4 nanosheets for H2 production and the degradation of organic pollutant under visible-light irradiation

Zhenhe Xu,Baotong Xu,Kun Qian,Zheng Li,Fu Ding,Miaomiao Fan,Yaguang Sun,Yu Gao

The solar-to-fuel conversion using a photocatalyst is an ideal method to solve the energy crisis and global warming. In this contribution, photocatalytic H2 production and organic pollutant removal using g-C3N4/CuS composite was demonstrated. Well dispersed CuS nanoparticles (NPs) with a size of about 10 nm were successfully grown on the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheet via a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared g-C3N4/CuS nanocomposite at an optimized loading exhibited a much higher visible light photoactivity, giving up to 2.7 times and 1.5 times enhancements in comparison to pure g-C3N4 for photocatalytic H2 production and methylene orange (MO) degradation, respectively. These enhanced photocatalytic activities are attributed to the interfacial transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes between g-C3N4 and CuS, which leads to effective charge separation on both parts. That is, under the visible light irradiation, electrons in the valence band (VB) of g-C3N4 can directly transfer to the CuS NPs, which can act as an electron sink and co-catalyst to promote the separation and transfer of photo-generated electrons, thus significantly improving the photocatalytic efficiency.

Copper sulphide/cuprous sulphide doped zero-valent iron@carbon (ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S) activate PMS for rapid and effective decomposition of Ni-EDTA

Wenyan Wang,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong

Ni-EDTA is widely present in electroplating effluents. It cannot be effectively removed by traditional wastewater treatment methods due to its chemical stability. In this study, copper sulphide/cuprous sulphide doped zero-valent iron@carbon (ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S) was prepared to active peroxymonsulphate (PMS) to decomposition Ni-EDTA. The ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S + PMS process shows excellent performance under neutral or even alkaline conditions. This is due to the acceleration of ZVI electron transport by CuS/Cu2S, the autocatalysis of CuS/Cu2S itself, and the synergistic effect of CuS/Cu2S and Ni-EDTA. The removal efficiency of 50 ppm Ni-EDTA electroplating effluents reached 99.53% at 10 min, and the discharge water can meet the Chinese emission standard. The influences of the main parameters such as initial pH value, catalyst, PMS and initial Ni-EDTA concentration on removal efficiency was systematically investigated.

Optimized Preparation of CuS@SiO2 Core-Shell Nanoparticles with Strong LSPR Absorption and Excellent Photostability for Highly Efficient Solar-driven Interfacial Water Evaporation

Meng Chenchen,Huang Min,Li Yunchao

Covellite copper sulfide nanocrystals(CuS NCs) are typical p-type semiconductors, showing strong optical absorption in the near-infrared(NIR) region thanks to their notable localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR) properties. However, their LSPR properties and compositions are both highly susceptible to the external environment, which severely limits their practical applications. Until now, it remains a technical challenge to improve the structural and optical stability without sacrificing the LSPR performance of CuS NCs. Herein, to solve such a challenge, CuS@SiO 2 NPs with various silica shell thicknesses(CSNs- X nm) were synthesized in a well-controlled fashion via optimizing reverse microemulsion coating protocol. Compared with the pristine CuS NCs, the as-prepared CuS@SiO 2 NPs exhibited comparable LSPR properties but much higher photostability, enabling resistance to various harsh environments( e.g. , high-power irradiation, strong reduction, and oxidation environment). Impressively, when used in solar-driven interfacial water evaporation, all the CuS@SiO 2 NPs exhibited excellent water evaporation performance with efficiencies beyond 70%(as high as 75.2% for CSN-23 nm) after 20 continuous testing cycles. Evidently, this paper is greatly helpful in better designing and fabricating high-performance plasmonic materials for practical photoelectrical, photothermal, and photocatalytic applications.

Uncapped nanobranch-based CuS clews used as an efficient peroxidase mimic enable the visual detection of hydrogen peroxide and glucose with fast response

Xiangheng Niu,Yanfang He,Jianming Pan,Xin Li,Fengxian Qiu,Yongsheng Yan,Libo Shi,Hongli Zhao,Minbo Lan

Nanosized materials acting as substitutes of natural enzymes are currently attracting significant research due to their stable enzyme-like characteristics, but some flaws of these nanozymes , including their limited catalytic rate and efficiency, need to be remedied to enable their wider applications. In this work, we verify for the first time the catalytic behavior of uncapped nanobranch-based CuS clews as a peroxidase mimic. XRD , XPS , SEM, and TEM proofs demonstrate that high-purity CuS clews composed of intertwined wires with abundant nanodendrites outside are successfully produced via a facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis approach, with thiourea as both the sulfion source and the structure-directing agent. The synthesized CuS can catalytically oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H 2 O 2 to trigger a visible color reaction with rapid response (reaching a maximum change within 5 min). The proposed CuS nanozyme exhibits preferable catalytic kinetics over natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP). This outstanding activity primarily results from the large surface area and rich sites exposed by the uncapped unique structure. Under optimized conditions, the fabricated sensing system provides linear absorbance (652 nm) changes in the H 2 O 2 concentration range of 0.2˜130 μM, with a detection limit of as low as 63 nM. When coupled with glucose oxidase (GOD), the system is demonstrated to be capable of monitoring glucose in blood samples with excellent performance.

Ultrasensitive determination of sulfathiazole using a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor with CuS microflowers as an electron transfer probe and Au@COF for signal amplification

Yufeng Sun,Huiju Gao,Longhua Xu,Geoffrey I.N. Waterhouse,Hongyan Zhang,Xuguang Qiao,Zhixiang Xu

In this work, a molecularly imprinted sensor employing copper sulfide (CuS) as a novel signal probe was successfully developed for ultrasensitive and selective determination of sulfathiazole (STZ). The reduction signals of Cu 2+ produced in the process of electron transfer of CuS containing large amounts of Cu 2+ are easy to be captured, which provide high electrochemical signals. Moreover, gold nanoparticles@covalent organic framework with excellent conductivity was introduced on the electrode surface for signal amplification and facilitating electron transfer processes of CuS. Under optimized testing conditions, the proposed sensor offered a linear DPV response to STZ over a very wide concentration range (1.0 × 10 -4 to 1.0 × 10 -11 mol L -1 ), with a limit of detection of 4.3 × 10 -12 mol L -1 . Fodder and mutton samples spiked with STZ were analyzed using this sensor, and the satisfactory recoveries ranging from 83.0% to 107.2% were obtained. In addition, the proposed sensor was used to determine the concentration of STZ in chicken liver and pork liver, with quantification results being near identical to those determined by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Spider-web-structured CNTs/CuS coating-based flexible pressure sensor with extreme self-heating and anti-freezing ability as a safeguard for winter sports

Sheng Zhang,Junyin Cheng,Bo Song,Shun Linghu,Yijun Tang,Qing Li,Lei Chen

Winter sports have gained popularity in recent years. These sports and activities, however, come with some health concerns, particularly in harsh and extremely cold conditions. A self-heating, flexible, and smart conductive material that can monitor body health in extreme conditions would thus be highly desirable. Inspired by the structure of a spider-web, a flexible pressure sensor was developed by depositing a CNTs/CuS composite coating on a fabric surface with a cellulose-entangled structure constructed by hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC). The obtained flexible pressure sensor demonstrated stable physiological signal detection and temperature insensitivity during photothermal heating, attributed to the water-retention capacity of HPMC. In addition, it exhibited excellent electrical conductivity (resistance of 10 Ω cm−1), deicing (181s), sterilization (≈99.99%), UV resistance (UPF ≈ 13 926), environmental adaptability (−78 °C to 50 °C) and high sensitivity (13.25 ± 0.123 kPa−1). This coating process can be applied to various garments, offering new possibilities for designing and preparing wearable multifunctional sensors.

Single-nanozyme based sensor array: mesoporous hollow melanin-CuS with dual-enhanced peroxidase-like and specific recognition activities for sensitive discriminative detection of fluoroquinolones

Yan Liu,Hongyan Zhang,Rong Guo

Antibiotic residues threaten ecosystems and human health, but current nanozyme-based colorimetric sensors suffer from weak activity and low interference resistance. Here, we address these challenges with a rationally designed mesoporous hollow polydopamine-copper sulfide (MHPDA-CuS) hybrid nanozyme. The nanozyme exhibits dramatically enhanced catalytic efficiency, with K m values for TMB and H 2 O 2 (0.146 and 0.206   mM, respectively) being 5.29- and 17-fold lower than those of horseradish peroxidase. Attractively, fluoroquinolones (FQs) function as dual-functional cofactors that dramatically boost the activity of the hybrid nanozyme due to the specific interaction of FQ with both PDA and copper ions in the nanozyme. The effect is closely linked to their molecular structure. This finding enables a three-channel colorimetric sensor array that rapidly (<10   min) discriminates multiple FQs with ultrahigh sensitivity (limit of detection, LOD < 1   nM) at a nanozyme dosage 100-fold lower than conventional methods. This dual-regulation strategy provides a powerful, facile tool for environmental and food safety monitoring and advances the structure-function understanding of polymer-metal hybrid nanozymes.
