Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted intense attention in tumor nanotheranostics recently; however, those nanotheranostics exhibited similar fluorescence in both normal and tumor tissues, limiting their practical application. In the present work, absolutely “off–on” fluorescent CD-based nanotheranostics was designed for tumor intracellular real-time imaging and pH-triggered DOX delivery via both static quenching by the crosslinking of benzaldehyde-containing diblock copolymers and dynamic quenching because of the surrounding conjugated DOX molecules. The proposed PPEGMA42-b-PFPMA122–(CDs)–DOX nanotheranostics did not exhibit fluorescence in a normal physiological medium, while strong fluorescence recovery occurred in the tumor intracellular microenvironment due to pH-triggered disintegration, releasing the CDs and DOX. The pH-triggered DOX release and absolute “off–on” fluorescence make the proposed nanotheranostics promising for tumor-specific pH-triggered DOX delivery and imaging.

In this paper a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor based on specific recognition with conformational changed after the target Cd(II) identification was fabricated. A ZnO and reduced graphene oxide (ZnO-rGO) nanocomposite with enhanced PEC activity was designed as photoactive material. After the further incorporation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with ZnO-rGO nanocomposite, the enhanced photocurrent signal could be detected owing to the localized surface plasmon resonance and good conductivity of AuNPs. In addition, AuNPs were used as anchors for immobilization of –SH modified aptamer S1. After that aptamer S2 was paired with S1 sequence to form complementary double stranded DNA (dsDNA) on the electrode surface. Methylene blue (MB) was acted as sensitizer and assembled in dsDNA structure to amplify photocurrent response. When Cd(II) was bound to the aptamer presented on the sensing interface, S2 specifically recognized and captured Cd(II), which resulted in the unwinding of dsDNA structure and the separation of MB molecules from the electrode surface with photocurrent response decreased. The photocurrent was detected by a double-working-electrode system, which used the modified electrode as the first working electrode and glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as the second working electrode. Dopamine (DA) was added to the electrolyte and acted as the electron donor , which could be oxidized on the modified electrode and reduced on the GCE to form a cyclic reaction, leading to the enhanced photocurrent response with improved photocurrent stability. This MB sensitized PEC aptasensor exhibited a high sensitivity with a detection limit of 1.8 × 10 −12 mol/L (3σ). Thus, a highly sensitive aptasensor with double-working-electrode detection method for Cd(II) determination were established and further applied to the water samples analysis.

The sensitive detection and efficient removal of heavy metal ions with high toxicity and mobility are of great importance for the environmental monitoring and control. Here, a novel SnS-decorated Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets heterostructure was synthesized via a facile hydro/solvothermal strategy. The as-prepared SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites presented impressive merits of the high surface area, mesoporous channels and fast electron transfer for the electrochemical reactions . And the synergistic interaction between SnS and Bi 2 O 3 significantly improved the “deposition-stripping” process involving electron transfer, mass diffusion and phase transition. With the unique characteristics, the SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites exhibited improved sensitivity and robust stability on the electrochemical detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) with low LODs of 1.50 nM and 1.40 nM, respectively, and were successfully applied on the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap water and lake water samples. Furthermore, the electrochemical removal performance towards Cd(II) and Pb(II) was achieved as well. These SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites could serve as an efficient platform on the detection and removal of heavy metal ions in environmental electrochemistry .

Cadmium recovery from wastewater is important to prevent water pollution and add value to the circular economy. Cementation is a widely applied method for Cd removal but this process is found less efficient. Herein, a novel electro-assisted cementation process is proposed, which enables effective Cd removal and recovery from Zn processing wastewater. Under optimal conditions, 98.5 % of dissolved Cd was removed and recovered having 94.1 % purity. More importantly, a peculiar Cd reduction on the Zn anode was observed and the mechanism is explained based on the electrochemical test and experimental results. By applying a cell potential of 0.5 V, the negative surface potential of Zn and its localized dissolution facilitated Cd deposition on the Zn anode by suppressing H 2 generation. Moreover, in contrast to the conventional cementation process, the formation of Cd dendritic structures on the Zn anode avoided full surface coverage, thus resulting in high cementation efficiency. In summary, this process presents great potential for the efficient removal of Cd from wastewaters and the findings offer new insights into the enhancement mechanism of electro-assisted cementation.

Crystalline celluloses , such as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), which are originated from biomass, were utilized as templates to prepare hierarchical LTA zeolites . The effect of both size and surface properties of crystalline cellulose on the zeolite synthesis were carefully discussed. As-prepared zeolite based on surface-modification NCC showed hierarchical porous structure with monolithic morphology inherited from nanocrystalline cellulose. Its specific surface area was measured to be 18.3 m 2 /g, which was approximately 3.4 times that of the traditional zeolite A (Z0, 5.4 m 2 /g). Owing to its unique structure, ZNSC facilitated fast Cd(II) adsorption with the adsorption equilibrium time shortened by 81.3%. Kinetics study revealed that intraparticle diffusion was significantly enhanced and the effective diffusion coefficient increased by near 5 times. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity achieved by ZNSC was 324.3 mg/g at 283 K, as calculated from the Langmuir model, which was 1.3 times that of Z0. These results are obtained when the grain size of ZNSC is larger than that of Z0, reflecting the superiority of the hierarchical structure in enhancing adsorption performance and thus providing a facile yet robust strategy for designing hierarchically structured zeolites for rapid and efficient wastewater treatment .

To enhance the sorption efficacy of attapulgite for heavy metals, mercapto-functionalized attapulgite (ATP-SH) was synthesized with mercaptan functional groups. When the mass-to-volume ratio of calcined attapulgite (ATP-C) to 3-Mercapropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was 1 g:0.5 mL (ATP-SH-0.5) and the pH was set to 8, a strong adsorption capacity for Cd (II) and Pb (II) was demonstrated. This indicates excellent adsorption performance for these heavy metals. ATP-SH-0.5 exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 43.81 mg/g and 274.83 mg/g for Cd (II) and Pb (II), respectively, in a single ion system. In a binary ion system, the maximum adsorption capacity was 31.86 mg/L and 254.45 mg/L for Cd (II) and Pb (II), respectively. Various characterizations and experiments showed that the adsorption of Cd (II) and Pb (II) onto ATP-SH-0.5 involves ion exchange reactions involving hydroxyl and thiol functional group complexation reactions. This adsorption process follows a single-molecule layer adsorption mechanism. XPS results indicate that hydroxyl and grafted thiol functional groups on the surface of mercapto-functionalized attapulgite participated in surface complexation reactions with Cd (II) and Pb (II), resulting in the formation of Cd-S and Pb-S species. Overall, this study provides a promising mercapto-functionalized modification material for the remediation of polluted water and soil. Keywords:attapulgite;thiol functional group;heavy metal;adsorption mechanism;XPS qualitative analyses

The composite of hydrogels and noble metal nanoparticles has wide applications in the field of functional materials . In this paper, we developed a novel and green strategy to synthesize a kind of composite hydrogel microspheres containing silver nanoparticles and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) modified sodium alginate (β-CD@SA@Ag) without use of strong reducing reagent. First, β-CD was chemical linked to SA by epichlorohydrin (ECH) to form the β-CD modified polymer (β-CD@SA). then AgNO 3 was added to the as-prepared polymer solution , in which silver nanoparticles were formed by the reducing power of β-CD units. Subsequently, by reversed-phase emulsion method and ionic cross-linking, a kind of β-CD@SA@Ag hydrogel microspheres were obtained. The structure and morphology of the composite material were characterized in detail by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Test data indicated that silver nanoparticles evenly dispersed in the composite material. On the basis, the adsorption and catalytic performances of the β-CD@SA@Ag hydrogel microspheres were studied towards to the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. Research results showed that the β-CD@SA@Ag hydrogel microspheres had excellent catalytic activity along with high environmental adaptability. whether in pure water, tap water or river water, aromatic nitro compounds can be completely reduced within 2–13 min. Moreover, the morphology of microspheres of the composite material endows the composite material with high stability and reusability. We believe that our work would provide a new idea for the green synthesis of organic-inorganic composite functional materials .

Fucoxanthin (Fx) has poor water solubility and bioavailability, which limits its application in the food industry. To improve the physicochemical properties of Fx, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) encapsulated Fx nanofibers (Fx/HP-β-CD nanofibers) were fabricated via electrospinning without using polymer. Molecular docking analysis showed the Fx/HP-β-CD nanofibers contained Fx and HP-β-CD at 1:2. Morphological analysis revealed the nanofibers were homogeneous without beads, having a diameter around 499 nm. The thermostability of Fx was significantly improved after encapsulationg by HP-β-CD. Animal studies showed that there was a 14% decrease of body weight, 11% white adipose tissue reduction and 9% lower of liver triglyceride for the mice treated with Fx/HP-β-CD nanofibers as compared with that of Fx treated mice. The total cholesterol was reduced by 23% in mice serum after treatment with Fx/HP-β-CD as compared with that of Fx. Interestingly, the Fx/HP-β-CD in this study could attenuate the testicular histopathology in obese mice.

Surfactant@cyclodextrin (CD) inclusions regarded as specific building blocks can form a single unit with a 1:1 ratio through host-guest interaction, and self-assemble into various nanostructures in aqueous solution. In this study, a polymeric-like building block, nC 12 C 6 C 12 (Me)@nγ-CD, is constructed by assembling e surfactant and γ-CD. This building block can assemble into well-defined nanostructures such as vesicles, nanotubes , and sheets in different concentrations. Due to the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions to be the driving force of nC 12 C 6 C 12 (Me)@nγ-CD aggregates formation, the morphologies among vesicles, nanotubes , and sheets could be reversibly transformed by multiple stimulus such as temperature, solvent additives, and ions.

Thiophenols are widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries , but the acute toxicity and irritating effects of these chemicals pose a threat to public health. A nanofibrous membrane-based fluorescent and colorimetric sensor was synthesized for the convenient and portable detection of thiophenols relying on the nucleophilic substitution reaction of chlorinated dipyrrole fluoride (BODIPY). To improve the sensing efficiency, β-CD was introduced as an addictive to regulate the molecular structure and physicochemical properties of the substrate membrane. The result showed that β-CD with appropriate cavity had good capability for complexing with the probe BODIPY, which successfully reduced the leakage of BODIPY during used. Also, thiophenol could be enriched by β-CD, and enhanced ratiometric fluorescence responses were achieved. The improved hydrophilicity facilitated the full contact of the NFM with thiophenol, contributing to a fast and efficient sensing process. The sensor system achieves a much shorter response time (180 s) and an extremely lower detection limit (0.11 nM). Furthermore, the sensor's fluorescent color changes can be identified by naked eye, showing great promise for the real-time on-site monitoring of thiophenols in both water and gas phases. Possible sensing mechanisms were investigated through theoretical calculation. Practical feasibility was validated through the actual sample analysis.

Engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) can resist heavy metal toxicity in plants, but their coexposure still exhibits toxicity to plants compared to plants without exposure to ENPs and heavy metals. There have been few studies on the toxic mechanism of nano TiO 2 -heavy metal coexposure and the effect mechanism of nano TiO 2 in plants. Thus, transcriptomics and metabolomics were used to study the toxic mechanism of rutile nano TiO 2 or TiO 2 -Cd (rutile nano TiO 2 and CdCl 2 mixture) on rice ( Oryza sativa L.). After 40 days of exposure, the plant height and root dry weight of rice were significantly decreased in the nano TiO 2 -Cd group compared to the blank group (nano TiO 2 and CdCl 2 free). After Cd treatment, 423 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 16 differential metabolites were identified. Nano TiO 2 exposure induced significant regulation of 299 DEGs and 6 metabolites. After nano TiO 2 -Cd coexposure, 1660 DEGs and 181 differential metabolites were identified. Notably, the EDGs (e.g., chalcone isomerase and hydroxycinnamoyl transferase) and differential metabolites (e.g., chrysin and galangin) demonstrated the disruption of flavonoid biosynthesis in Cd-treated rice. After rice was exposed to nano TiO 2 , the DEGs were related to ribosome, whereas the differential metabolites were associated with pyruvate metabolism and valine, leucine , and isoleucine biosynthesis. Furthermore, 14 DEGs (e.g., asparaginyl-tRNA synthetase and methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase) involved in aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthetic pathways were significantly upregulated in rice treated with nano TiO 2 -Cd, in line with the changes in related metabolites (e.g., L -asparagine and 10-formyltetrahydrofolate). Our results show that it is necessary to pay close attention to the toxicity of nano TiO 2 -Cd coexposure in paddy ecosystems and use ENPs with caution to combat the phytotoxicity of heavy metals.

CdS films prepared via chemical bath deposition exhibit extremely good performance as a buffer layer of chalcogenide solar cells. However, their commercial application is very limited because of the production of a large amount of wastewater containing cadmium. In this study, we develop an efficient way to prepare CdS films using the spin-coating technique. The spin solution is anhydrous, and the oxygen content can be well controlled by changing the Cd/S content ratio in the solution. The crystal structure, morphology, and optical and electrical properties of CdS films with different Cd/S content ratios are characterized. The effect of the oxygen content on the device performance is investigated. We find that the introduction of an appropriate amount of oxygen can improve the carrier transport efficiency by decreasing the interface recombination. The spin-coated CdS films have good coverage of the substrate for film thicknesses below 50 nm. By the optimizing of Cd/S content ratio, we achieve an improved efficiency of 5.76% for the Sb 2 Se 3 solar cells. This preparation technique is sufficiently simple for large-scale processing and produces much less wastewater containing cadmium; thus, it is promising for application to future large-scale solar cell production.
