High-performance electrode modification materials play a crucial role in improving the sensitivity of sensor detection in electrochemical determination of heavy metals. In this study, a rGO/MoS2/CS nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was used to construct a sensitive sensor for detecting lead ions in tobacco leaves. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used to increase the conductivity of the sensor, and the nano-flowered MoS2 could provide a large reaction specific surface area and a certain active site for heavy metal reaction. Chitosan (CS) was used to improve the enrichment ability of heavy metals and increase the electrocatalytic activity of electrode. Thus, an electrochemical sensor with excellent performance in reproducibility, stability and anti-interference ability was established. The stripping behavior of Pb(II) and the application conditions of the sensor were studied by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The investigation indicated that the sensor exhibited high detection sensitivity in the range of 0.005–0.05–2.0 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.0016 μM. This work can provide a fast and effective method for determination of Pb(II) in samples with low content, such as tobacco leaves.

The performance of Fe 3 O 4 /attapulgite (APT) nanoparticles in Pb(II) adsorption from aqueous solutions could be improved by modifying the particles with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) and then combining with chitosan (CS) into beads. After preparing the APTS-Fe 3 O 4 /APT@CS beads, their surface morphology and crystal phases were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of APTS-Fe 3 O 4 /APT@CS were studied by a vibrating sample magnetometer, while their heat resistance and stability were characterized by thermal weight analysis. A recycling test and comparison of adsorption capacities were also carried out. The adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 /APT was improved by the modification with APTS and CS. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models. The adsorption of Pb(II) reaches a maximum of 625.34 mg/g, which compares favorably with other reported adsorbents. The results show that APTS-Fe 3 O 4 /APT@CS is a promising hybrid adsorbent for effective removal of Pb(II) from water.

In this work, two novel Cs(I) ion-imprinted polymers (Cs(I)-IIP1 and Cs(I)-IIP2) have been prepared by surface imprinting technique based on support matrix of SBA-15. The strategy was carried out by introducing two different reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization including using the free RAFT agent in solution and surface-anchored RAFT agent with appropriate initiation method, which is expected to generate a well-defined surface ion-imprinted polymer with excellent adsorption capacity. The materials were verified by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, nitrogen adsorption–desorption and TGA. Owing to the intrinsic advantages of surface-anchored RAFT polymerization, the resultant surface ion-imprinted polymer (Cs(I)-IIP2) exhibited more homogeneous and thinner polymer layer (15 nm) with excellent macrostructure in comparison to Cs(I)-IIP1 (75 nm) prepared by using the free RAFT agent in solution. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of both polymers are compared, indicating that Cs(I)-IIP2 displays higher adsorption property and excellent selectivity for Cs(I).

A novel microsphere adsorbent based upon carboxymethyl cellulose sodium/prussian blue composite loaded with Lanthanum(III) (CMC/PB-La) was successfully synthesized via electrostatic ejection device for removal of cesium from contaminated water, and characterized by FT-IR, SEM, EDX and XPS. Influencing factors to adsorption cesium were investigated, including solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration, temperature and competing ions. Linear Freundlich isotherm was fitted satisfactorily to the adsorption data, and the adsorption kinetic data was fitted well with pseudo-second-order model. Moreover, the results of γ-irradiation experiments indicate that CMC/PB-La has good radiation stability.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) synthesis via aldol condensation of methyl propionate with formaldehyde over Cs-based supported catalysts is intensively investigated, while the effect of their pore structures on catalytic performance still lacks in-depth understanding. Herein, series of Cs-Zr/SiO 2 catalysts with different pore structures were prepared for this aldol condensation. The physicochemical characteristics of as-prepared Cs-Zr/SiO 2 catalysts were characterized using physical N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms and CO 2 -/NH 3 -TPD. In addition, the impact of pore structure on mass transfer, adsorption, and desorption of reactants and products was studied through in situ DRIFTS. The results show that the acid and base site densities elevated with the increasing pore volume. The mass transfer of reactants and products could be promoted with increasing pore size, while their adsorption energies exhibited a volcanic trend. As a result, the Cs-Zr/SiO 2 catalysts having average pore diameter of 12-18 nm and acid-base balance was considered as the optimal candidate for MMA production.

Mosquitoes are notorious for transmitting arbovirus diseases. Existing genetic-based control strategies only target one of mosquitoes’ flying, blood-sucking and reproduction behaviors and are technically demanding, limiting their real-world application. Therefore, there is an imperative need to identify novel molecular targets for developing multi-effect, easy-to-deploy mosquito control strategies. We herein identified and characterized the function of mosquito iron-sulfur-cluster assembly protein AalbNFS1. Silencing AalbNFS1 with double-strand RNAs (dsNFS1) caused evident metabolic and enzyme activity abnormalities in mosquito tissues and cells. Further analyses revealed that AalbNFS1 deficiency simultaneously reduced mosquitoes’ flying, blood-sucking and reproductive abilities by inducing muscle cell ferroptosis, confirming AalbNFS1 as a multi-effect molecular target for mosquito control purposes. To facilitate the real-world deployment of dsNFS1, a chitosan-tripolyphosphate-dsNFS1 (CS-TPP-dsNFS1) nanosystem was synthesized, generating satisfactory mosquito control effects. Collectively, our study pioneers the research on iron-sulfur-cluster biosynthesis mechanisms in mosquitoes and develops an effective mosquito control nanosystem with promising real-world applicability.

In this study, we employed a melamine sponge (MS) as the skeleton material and utilized carbonized ZIF-8 (CZIF-8) and chitosan (CS) as the raw materials to prepare CZIF-8/CS-MS, a novel material featuring a three-dimensional interconnected porous network. The resulting CZIF-8/CS-MS material possesses a unique porous structure, significant specific surface area and abundant active sites. These characteristics make CZIF-8/CS-MS a promising absorbent for selective purification of plant growth regulators (PGRs) including 1-naphthlcetic acid (NAA), naphthoxyacetic acid (NOA), 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). After optimizing the extraction conditions, excellent linearity ( r > 0.9994) was observed within a wide linear range of 1–100 ng/mL using ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry. The detection limits (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were found to be in the range of 0.013–0.154 ng/mL and 0.044–0.515 ng/mL, respectively. Additionally, the relative recovery of Schisandra chinensis fruit samples was determined to be 89.7–99.4 %, with a relative standard deviation (RSDs) of ≤ 8.4 % ( n = 3). Compared to other methods, this approach offers a multitude of benefits, which include but are not limited to exceptional sensitivity, reduced sample volume requirements, low LODs, a comparable linear range, and high reproducibility. The findings of this study pave the way for exploring novel functionalized sponge columns, which leverage the integration of nano-sorbent materials and coating agents, for the purpose of analyzing PGRs within intricate matrix samples.

In this work, a highly efficient and environmentally friendly chitosan-based graft flocculant, namely, acrylamide- and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride-grafted chitosan [CS-g-P(AM-DMDAAC)], was prepared successfully through plasma initiation. FTIR results confirmed the successful polymerization of CS-g-P(AM-DMDAAC) and P(AM-DMDAAC). P(AM-DMDAAC) was the copolymer of acrylamide- and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride. SEM results revealed that a densely cross-linked network structure formed on the surface. XRD results verified that the ordered crystal structure of chitosan in CS-g-P(AM-DMDAAC) was changed into an amorphous structure after plasma-induced polymerization. The flocculation results of low-algal-turbidity water further showed the optimal flocculation efficiency of turbidity removal rate, COD removal rate, and Chl-a removal rate were 99.02%, 96.11%, and 92.20%, respectively. The flocculation efficiency of CS-g-P(AM-DMDAAC) were significantly higher than those obtained by cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and Polymeric aluminum and iron (PAFC). This work provided a valuable basis for the design of eco-friendly naturally modified polymeric flocculants to enhance the flocculation of low-algal-turbidity water.

The rational use of solar energy to achieve photothermal conversion is an attractive strategy to promote the efficient removal of radioactive Cs + and Sr 2+ from nuclear wastewater. Herein, a photothermal adsorbent of composite aerogel with three-dimensional porous structure is fabricated by integrating prussian blue analogues (PBAs) and straw biochar into the chitosan (CS) and waste leather scrap hydrolysate (WLSH) aerogel matrix (CS/WLSH/C/PBAs). The local heating effect generated by CS/WLSH/C/PBAs aerogel induce to generate steam, accelerating the enrichment of Cs + and Sr 2+ in the solution, which increase their interaction with the CS/WLSH/C/PBAs and improves their adsorption rates and capacities. Under simulated sunlight, the adsorption equilibrium times for Cs + and Sr 2+ by CS/WLSH/C/PBAs are shortened from 5 h in the dark condition to 2 h, with maximum adsorption capacities of 156.0 and 95.1 mg/g for Cs + and Sr 2+ , respectively. Meanwhile, the CS/WLSH/C/PBAs aerogel also exhibits excellent reusability. Notably, the Cs + and Sr 2+ still can be efficiently removed in simulated seawater. Encouragingly, the CS/WLSH/C/PBAs aerogel also exhibits excellent adsorption properties for dyes and oils. This work provides insights for the design of multifunctional and efficient composite adsorbents, and paving a promising way for enhancing the adsorption of Cs + and Sr 2+ through solar energy.

Room-temperature sodium–sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries are promising candidates for large-scale grid energy storage applications due to the abundant availability of sodium resources and their low acquisition cost. However, the shuttling effect of long-chain sodium polysulfides severely degrades the cycle stability of RT Na-S batteries. In this study, a biomass-derived (corn-straw) porous carbon material with self-doped nitrogen and oxygen atoms was fabricated as a sulfur host (denoted as NOC). Sulfur was subsequently loaded covalently via the vapor-infiltration method to form the cathode material for RT Na-S batteries. Owing to the high cellulose content in corn-straw, the derived NOC composite exhibits excellent electrical conductivity and large pores, which facilitate Na + transport and accommodate the volume expansion of active sulfur during cycling. More importantly, theoretical calculation reveals that compared to pure carbon matrices, the N and O dopants make carbon become unsaturated, increasing the electron density distribution and enhancing bonding ability to form C S bonds. When used as a cathode, in-situ Raman and ex-situ XRD measurements confirm that covalently bonded sulfur inhibits the shuttle effect by directly forming Na 2 S during the reduction reaction. Consequently, the NOC/S cathode delivers superior electrochemical performances with excellent cycle stability. This study introduces an innovative approach to developing advanced RT Na-S batteries by utilizing cost-effective carbon materials derived from biomass.

The disulfide dianion [S2]2–, as an important structural motif in sulfides, can incorporate isolated S2– to form homoatomic heteroleptic polyhedra [MSx(S2)y]. However, the sulfides that contain [MSx(S2)y] units have been rarely reported and have not been systematically investigated as infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. It is verified in this work that the homoatomic heteroleptic coordination strategy enhances local structural asymmetry, leading to improved optical anisotropy and NLO performance. Three compounds, namely, ANb2PS10(A = K,Rb,Cs), were identified and prepared. They exhibit a large phase-matchable second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, with KNb2PS10, RbNb2PS10, and CsNb2PS10 showing the effects of 1.5, 2.2, and 1.8 (×AgGaS2@2090 nm), respectively, and large birefringence (Δn = 0.39@546 nm) with KNb2PS10 as a representative. The first-principles calculations indicate that [Nb2S4(S2)4]8– units play a dominant role in inducing strong SHG responses and large birefringence. By validating the homoatomic heteroleptic coordination strategy, this work opens avenues for the design of advanced optical materials.

Cancer is one of the biggest killers threat to human life and health and is still difficult to treat mainly due to the lack of targeted drug delivery stages and limitations associated with delivering drugs to targeted cancer tissues. The goal of this work was to develop a magnetic, pH-sensitive formulation for targeted delivery of chemotherapeutic agents to cancer cells. Then the functional drug delivery system (Fe3O4@CS/PEG-DOX) was synthesized by the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique. And the drug loading content is calculated to be 19.1%. In addition, the Fe3O4@CS/PEG-DOX exhibited excellent pH-sensitivity, 73.1% DOX was released within 48 h at pH 4.0. Furthermore, all the release behaviors fit the Higuchi model very well and the dissolution of CS/PEG layers played a key role on DOX release from Fe3O4@CS/PEG-DOX. The results of toxicity analysis in human liver hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) revealed that Fe3O4@CS/PEG-DOX exhibited high anti-tumor activity, while the Fe3O4@CS/PEG nanocomposites were practically non-toxic. Therefore, all the results demonstrated that the Fe3O4@CS/PEG-DOX could have an important impact on the development of targeted intracellular delivery nanodevices for cancer therapy.
