Photocatalytic technology is an attractive option for environmental remediation because of its green and sustainable nature. However, the inefficient utilization of solar energy and powder morphology currently impede its practical application. Here, we designed a floatable photocatalyst by anchoring 0D Cu2(OH)PO4 (CHP) nanoparticles on 2D graphene to construct 0D/2D CHP/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogels. The CHP/rGO aerogels have interconnected mesopores that provide a large surface area, promoting particle dispersion and increasing the number of active sites. Moreover, the optical response of the CHP/rGO aerogel has been significantly expanded to cover the full spectrum of the solar light. Notably, the 20%CHP/rGO aerogel displayed a high degradation rate (k = 0.178 min–1) taking methylene blue (MB) as a model pollutant under light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The enhanced photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the rapid electron transfer in the CHP/rGO heterostructures, as supported by the DFT theoretical calculations. Our research highlights the utilization of full spectrum responsive photocatalysts for the elimination of organic pollutants from wastewater under solar light irradiation, as well as the potential for catalyst recovery using floatable aerogels to meet industrial requirements.

In this study, a novel CdSe@PEI-PVP luminescent hydrogel was constructed by using MPA-CdSe quantum dots (QDs) as a single emitter and hydrogen bond cross-linking network between highly branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a hydrogel skeleton, in which PEI also works as a passivation ligand for MPA-CdSe quantum dots. Utilizing the dual emission of MPA-CdSe quantum dots and adjusting the surface state of MPA-CdSe with PEI and Cd 2+ , CdSe@PEI-PVP hydrogel can emit bright white light as a whole. Furthermore, CdSe@PEI-PVP shows specific recognition for Cu 2+ , luminescent color changes from bright white to orange when Cu 2+ is added, which enables CdSe@PEI-PVP hydrogel to serve as a fluorescent probe for ion detection. The luminescent hydrogel has great self-healing ability and reversible morphological thermal responsiveness, existing as a white luminescent hydrogel at room temperatures and transforming into a pale green luminescent solution at high temperatures.

A novel fluorescence-based probe represented as Cu, N-CDs, was developed for the dual sensing detection of Cu 2+ and amoxicillin (AMO), which had a high quantum yield up to 60.08 %, along with excellent photoluminescent properties and remarkable stability. When detecting Cu 2+ , the fluorescence signal from Cu, N-CDs probe experienced quenching due to photoinduced electron transfer (PET). Subsequently, the introduction of AMO led to the recovery of the probe's fluorescence. This recovery was likely attributed to the superior affinity between Cu 2+ and AMO, resulting in the displacement of Cu 2+ from the Cu, N-CDs and blocked the PET process. Notably, the detection limits of Cu 2+ and AMO were determined 18 nM and 9 nM, respectively. We further demonstrated the practical utility of the Cu, N-CDs probe through its successful application in the analysis of Cu 2+ and AMO in Chinese herbal medicine and milk samples. Overall, our findings highlighted the potency of Cu, N-CDs as versatile and effective tools for the detection of Cu 2+ and AMO, paving the way for their broad applications in the safety analysis of food and pharmaceutical.

In order to improve the photothermal conversion performance of a phase change material (PCM) PEG2000, a photothermal conversion material Cu 2-x S was introduced to enhance its light absorbance. The influence of S/Cu stoichiometry and Fe 3+ doping modification ratio on the photoabsorption performance of Cu 2-x S was studied. The composite with photothermal conversion performance was obtained by combining PEG2000. The results show that Cu 2-x S (S2) doped with Fe/Cu stoichiometry ratio of 0.3:1 exhibits the best light absorption performance. Moreover, a small amount of additive of the modified Cu 2-x S (Cu 2-x Fe y S, 1.0 wt%) can greatly increase photothermal conversion and energy storage efficiency. The prepared composite can meet the practical application in the field of solar photothermal conversion.

Amidoxime groups were successfully introduced to develop a novel amidoxime-functionalized cellulose fiber (AO-Cell) for absorptive removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The chemical structure , and the competitive adsorption of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ by AO-Cell were investigated by experiments study, Density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. The results showed the N and O atoms in the amidoxime group can spontaneously interact with Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ through sharing long pair electrons to generate stable coordination structure, which was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Besides, the enlarged surface area, improved hydrophilicity and dispersion offered by AO-Cell facilitate the adsorption process by increasing the accessibility of absorption sites. As results of these synergetic modification, AO-Cell can remain effective in a wide pH range (1–6) and reach adsorption equilibrium within 60 min. At optimal conditions, the achieved theoretical adsorption capacity is as high as 84.81 mg/g for Cu 2+ and 61.46 mg/g for Zn 2+ in the solution with multiple ions. The competition between Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ in occupying the absorption sites arises from the difference in the metallic ion affinity and covalent index with the adsorbent as demonstrated by the MD analysis. Importantly, AO-Cell demonstrated favorable recyclability after up to 10 adsorption-desorption cycles.

The detection and imaging of intracellular copper ions (Cu 2+ ) play a crucial role in understanding their physiological implications and their involvement in various cellular processes. This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of water-soluble near-infrared fluorescent CIS/ZnS core–shell quantum dots (QDs) with excellent biocompatibility and stability. The QDs exhibit exceptional selectivity and sensitivity for Cu 2+ detection, allowing for precise quantification of Cu 2+ content within biological systems. Furthermore, Co-incubation of the QDs with HeLa cells demonstrates their impressive cellular imaging capabilities, facilitated by fluorescence bursts in response to changing Cu 2+ content. Overall, our proposed QDs are of great significance in advancing the research and application of near-infrared semiconductor quantum dots in biomedicine, and their near-infrared fluorescence properties and high fluorescence quantum yield (34.48 %) make them very advantageous for the precise detection of intracellular Cu 2+ and cell fluorescence imaging. This research contributes to the understanding of copper ion dynamics within cells and opens avenues for further exploration of its role in cellular physiology.

To address the demands for heavy metal wastewater treatment and copper resource recycling, hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) technology offers advantages of low energy consumption and ion selectivity. However, the practical application of HCDI is limited by the insufficient adsorption performance and stability of electrode materials. In this study, flower-like copper sulfide (CuS) was synthesized via a hydrothermal method and used as CDI electrodes, with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl butyral/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVB/PVP) as binders. The effects of the two binders on electrode structure and performance were investigated, focusing on elucidating the selective adsorption mechanism of CuS as an HCDI cathode. The CuS-PVDF electrodes exhibited superior conductivity and higher Cu 2+ adsorption capacity (551.49 mg·g −1 at 1.0 V), attributed to the polar stabilization effect of rigid molecular chains and low surface energy of PVDF, which facilitated efficient utilization of CuS active sites. In contrast, the PVB-PVP binder caused shielding of active sites on CuS, and delayed charge transport due to encapsulation by flexible polymer chains. Moreover, the CuS electrodes exhibited selective adsorption of Cu 2+ in the HCDI system. The selectivity of Cu 2+ exceeded 70 % in a mixture of multiple heavy metal ions. This selective mechanism can be attributed to pK sp (CuS) = 40.3 and redox-mediated phase transformation (CuS→Cu 2 S/Cu 2 O/Cu).

With the development and use of the electronic and electrical equipment, solving electromagnetic pollution has become a top priority for human health. In this work, ternary co-doped (Ca 2 ⁺, Cu 2 ⁺, Sn 4 ⁺) ions were incorporated into M-type hexagonal barium ferrite (Ba 1-x Ca x Fe 11.6 Cu 0.2 Sn 0.2 O 27 ), and the effects of varying Ca 2 ⁺ doping levels on the crystal structure, surface morphology, and electromagnetic characteristics were thoroughly investigated. Structural characterizations confirms that Ca 2+ substitutes Ba 2+ sites, decreasing the grain size and lattice values while increasing the lattice strain. At x = 0.15, the Ba 1-x Ca x Fe 11.6 Cu 0.2 Sn 0.2 O 27 ferrite achieves the maximum value of saturation magnetization of 67.7 emu/g, the highest RL min value of -44.2 dB@14.3 GHz and effective absorption bandwidth of 3.04 GHz, showing potential as an effective material for absorption applications.

Radioactive iodine (I) produced in the nuclear industry can be eliminated through solid-phase adsorption. Nevertheless, conventional adsorbents suffer from limited capacity, poor selectivity, and insufficient stability. In this study, metallic copper modified nitrogen-doped carbon composites (Cu x -NC) were prepared from a pre-synthesized template of Cu 2+ -zeolite imidazole framework-8 (Cu 2+ -ZIF-8) by ball milling combined with pyrolysis processes. The surface physical and chemical properties of Cu x -NC composites were characterized, and then applied to remove iodide (I - ) in aqueous solutions. The experimental results indicated that Cu 0 introduced to nitrogen-doped carbon not only significantly enhanced I - removal but also achieved an exceptional adsorption capacity of 269.2 mg/g by incorporating 35 % copper and setting the pyrolysis temperature at 1000 °C. Notably, under acidic (pH = 3) and blown air conditions, the adsorption capacity was markedly increased, attaining 383.3 and 474.3 mg/g, respectively. The Cu 35 -NC demonstrated exceptional selectivity for I - in the presence of interfering anions such as Cl - and SO 4 2- . Mechanism studies showed that as-fabricated materials eliminated I - through adsorption and oxidation. The presence of Cu 0 particles activated molecular oxygen to release Cu + and generate H 2 O 2 , resulting in I - being adsorbed and oxidized. These findings underscore the significant potential of the economical Cu x -NC for the effective elimination of radioactive iodide.

Although fluorescent probes have been used extensively for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) sensing, most involve a tedious, prolonged, or high-cost synthesis procedure. Thus, it is still necessary to develop convenient and economical fluorescent probes for sensitive determination of ALP. Herein, a facile fluorescent strategy was designed for ALP detection utilizing the fluorogenic response of thiamine (TH) triggered by Cu 2+ (Cu 2+ -TH system). It was found that Cu 2+ facilitated the oxidation of non-fluorescent TH to fluorescent thiochrome (TC) in an alkaline environment, while pyrophosphoric acid (PPi) interacted with Cu 2+ to form PPi-Cu 2+ chelates, preventing the oxidation of TH to fluorescent TC. Consequently, a faint fluorescence output was detected in the system. After adding ALP into this system, PPi was catalyzed to phosphate (Pi), which combined weakly with Cu 2+ . A large amount of TH was oxidized into fluorescent TC by free Cu 2+ , leading to high fluorescence. Therefore, an ALP sensing platform was constructed by utilizing the fluorogenic reaction of the Cu 2+ -TH system as the signal reporter. The assay exhibited favorable analytical performance for ALP measurement. A linear correlation was obtained between the ALP concentration (0.01–1 mU/mL) and the fluorescence intensity of the Cu 2+ -TH system, with a limit of detection as low as 0.0038 mU/mL. Additionally, the assay was further employed for analyzing ALP content in complex biological samples. This work thus advances the science of in situ fluorogenic reaction in the field of biosensing. The effective removal of Cu 2+ ions from contaminated wastewater is greatly significant for environmental remediation. Herein, the PAN@LDH-Hpdc (PAN = polyacrylonitrile; LDH = layered double hydroxide; Hpdc = pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylate) was prepared using the “Seeds Embedded-Epitaxial Growth-Ion exchange” strategy. Benefiting from the high surface area and abundant exposed active sites, the PAN@LDH-Hpdc showed the removal efficiency of 99.6 % in 25 min, and the Cu 2+ ions (10 ppm) can be decreased to reach the WHO drinking water standard in 10 min. When the concentration of Cu 2+ ions was ∼ 1000 ppm, the adsorption capacity of PAN@LDH-Hpdc was as high as 200.0 mg/g. In addition, the PAN@LDH-Hpdc exhibited high selectivity for Cu 2+ ions with the removal efficiency of 99.9 % in the mixed solution containing Na + , Mg 2+ , K + , Ca 2+ , Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ , Zn 2+ and Co 2+ ions. The adsorption mechanisms of PAN@LDH-Hpdc involved the coordination by the intercalated Hpdc anions and surface adsorption by the LDH laminate.

Global warming, driven by rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere, is an environmental predicament confronted by humanity. Plasma catalytic decomposition of carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide is a practical approach to mitigate this challenge, which can be a crucial step in carbon recycling. Metal selenides are promising candidates owing to their abundant reserves and outstanding electron transfer properties, making them highly active in chemical reactions. In this study, the morphology of AlO(OH) and the dispersion of Cu2−xSe were optimized by hydrothermal synthesis temperature. Specifically, the Cu2−xSe-Al-180 catalyst, prepared at a hydrothermal temperature of 180 °C, formed AlO(OH) with good crystallinity and a nanoscale thin-sheet structure, with Cu2−xSe uniformly distributed on the AlO(OH) support. The reaction of CO2 decomposition to CO production by integrating Cu2−xSe-Al-180 with dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma led to a CO2 conversion of up to 28.07% at a specific input energy (SIE) of 58.07 kJ L−1. The excellent CO2 adsorption properties of AlO(OH) and Cu2Se reduce the activation energy barrier of the reaction, and Cu2Se further promotes the excited activation of CO2 in the plasma. These findings offer valuable insights for the development and design of catalysts in the field of plasma catalysis and highlight the potential of CuSe-based materials in CO2 reduction technologies.
