The effective synthesis and self-assembly of nanocomposites were of key importance for a broad range of nanomaterial applications. In this work, new carbon nanotube (CNT)-Cu 2 O nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via a facile approach. CNT was selected as the anchoring substrate to load Cu 2 O nanoparticles to prepare composite catalysts with well stability and good reusability. It is discovered that the prepared CNT-Cu 2 O nanocomposite materials could be effectively controlled via regulating preparation temperature and time without the use of any stabilizing agents. The nanostructures of synthesized composites were well characterized by many techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). And the prepared CNT-Cu 2 O nanocomposites with optimized preparation conditions as new catalyst displayed excellent catalytic performance on the reduction reaction of p-nitrophenol, demonstrating potential applications for environmental governance and composite materials.

A novel ternary photocatalytic nanocomposite, Ag–Cu 2 O/C 3 N 4 , has been successfully synthesized via a facile two-step reduction procedure at room temperature, wherein Ag nanoparticles are directly growing on the surface of Cu 2 O supported by C 3 N 4 nanosheets. The resulting ternary Ag–Cu 2 O/C 3 N 4 photocatalyst exhibits enhanced photocatalytic activity towards methyl orange (MO) degradation compared with its counterparts (Cu 2 O, spherical Ag–Cu 2 O and Cu 2 O/C 3 N 4 ), demonstrating a removal rate of MO up to 95.7% within 30 min. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the following factors: (1) the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanoparticles broadening the visible light response of Cu 2 O; (2) the introduction of C 3 N 4 functioning not only as a fast electron delivery but also a fine stabilizer to prevent the Ag–Cu 2 O composite from agglomeration. Mechanism studies reveal that MO is cracked into smaller fragments and the h + is the main reactive species participating in the photocatalytic process. Moreover, the Ag–Cu 2 O/C 3 N 4 photocatalyst also shows high photodegradation ability for another two representative azo dyes, acid orange II and congo red. This study demonstrates the potential of Ag–Cu 2 O/C 3 N 4 in the degradation of azo dyes and also provides a guide to design of Cu 2 O-based ternary photocatalysts for further wastewater remediation.

A p-n heterojunction film of Cu 2 O/α-Fe 2 O 3 was constructed by electrodepositing p-type Cu 2 O microcubes on liquid phase deposited film of n-type α-Fe 2 O 3 . The surface morphology , the crystal phase and composition of Cu 2 O/α-Fe 2 O 3 heterojunction film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The enhanced absorption in the visible light region was observed in UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectra. Meanwhile, an efficiently improved separation and faster transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes were revealed by photoluminescence spectra and electrochemical impedance spectra. The Cu 2 O/α-Fe 2 O 3 p-n heterojunction was applied to photoelectrocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline at a bias potential of +0.5 V under visible light illumination. After 60-min photoelectrocatalytic treatment, 73.3% of oxytetracycline was removed and the degradation rate constant reached 2.14 × 10 −2 min −1 . Moreover, the crystal phases and compositions for the used and fresh Cu 2 O/α-Fe 2 O 3 films were studied, and a possible photoelectrocatalytic mechanism was proposed.

Issues with the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reduction hinder the advance of Li O 2 batteries for next-generation energy storage. To alleviate these problems, Cu 2 O nanoparticles with different crystal planes have been synthesized via a simple solution reaction and characterized as a bi-functional catalyst for non-aqueous Li O 2 battery. In this work, catalytic behaviour of Cu 2 O nanoparticles with different crystal planes are initially explored and it is found that the Cu 2 O nanoparticles exposing {111} crystal planes exhibit the most catalytic performance compared with other crystal planes, which is further confirmed by using first-principles computations. Inspired by selectively catalytic behaviour of crystal plane, porous Cu 2 O nanoframes exposed with eight {111} crystal planes and higher surface area derives from all-corner-truncated rhombic dodecahedron Cu 2 O nanoparticles are synthesized, which can act as highly activity three-dimensional cathode in a typical Li O 2 battery after being directly combined with carbon nanotubes by electrostatic interaction . Thanks to the excellent catalytic activity of carbon nanotubes-Cu 2 O nanoframes and unique cathode structure, batteries with this cathode display an enhanced electrochemical performance including superior round-trip efficiency, excellent cycling performance and high specific capacity.

Early diagnosis and treatment of liver fibrosis can effectively prevent chronic liver disease from developing into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Conventional techniques to detect liver fibrosis are complex and expensive. The development of non-invasive and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) can significantly reduce the time and cost, which is important for improving the efficiency of diagnosis and detection of liver disease. In this study, we developed a cubic core–shell Cu2O@Ag SERS bioprobe for label-free identification of HCC and hepatic fibrosis. The constructed composite substrate has shown impressive SERS sensitivity and good stability. Trace molecules (alizarin red and rhodamine 6G) with concentrations as low as 10−10 mol L−1 could be detected. Cubic Cu2O@Ag also exhibited good SERS stability, since the smallest relative standard deviation (RSD) of Cu2O@Ag-MB (methylene blue) was only 8.80%. Then, the spectral analysis of these three molecules (AR, MB, and R6G) was carried out by applying a machine learning-assisted LDA model, and the classification accuracy reached 100%. Subsequently, four different types of hepatocytes were identified and classified by using the established model and label-free SERS detection with a desirable accuracy of 91.38%. This innovative technology will further facilitate the early diagnosis of HCC and liver disease and assist in the rationalization of clinical treatment.

Non-enzymatic glucose detection is an effective strategy to control the blood glucose level of diabetic patients. A novel hierarchical core–shell structure of nickel hydroxide shell coated copper hydroxide core based on copper foam (Ni(OH)2@Cu(OH)2-CF) was fabricated and derived from NiO@Cu2O-CF for glucose sensing. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometry experiments have demonstrated the efficient electrochemical catalysis of glucose under alkaline conditions. The measurement displays that the fabricated sensor exhibits a detection scale of 0.005–4.5 mM with a detection sensitivity of 4.67 µA/µM/cm2. It has remarkable response/recovery times in respect of 750 μM glucose (1.0 s/3.5 s). Moreover, the NiO@Cu2O-CF shows significant selectivity, reliable reproducibility and long-term stability for glucose determination, suggesting it is a suitable candidate for further applications.

A highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose electrode based on truncated octahedral CuO-modified Cu 2 O@Cu composite was fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method combined with a two-step liquid-phase reduction process. Research on utilizing nanostructures to increase the contact opportunities between electroactive materials and target analytes, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic activity, is currently insufficient. In this study, we employed a reduction method to create a core–shell structure with copper shells encapsulating internal nanomaterials. This structure was designed to provide more active sites for glucose molecules, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic response current of glucose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the morphology and components of the products obtained from each step, while the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu ternary composites were specifically analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For glucose detection, CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu composite was modified onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as a working electrode for electrochemical performance testing. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) test results indicate that the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu-GCE electrode exhibits a sensitivity of 771 μA cm −2 mM −1 within the glucose concentration range of 0 to 10 mM, with a detection limit of 3.39 μM. Chronoamperometry (CA) results demonstrate that the electrode achieves a sensitivity of 1067 μA cm −2 mM −1 in the glucose concentration range of 0 to 1 mM, with a detection limit of 0.56 μM. Exhibiting a broad linear response range, high sensitivity, minimal detection limit, and robust selectivity against common interferents, the electrode maintained 99 % stability over four days and retained more than 85 % of its current response for two weeks, also showing notable sensitivity in artificial sweat samples. Owing to its simple fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and outstanding electrochemical properties, the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu composite offers significant potential for application in non-enzymatic glucose sensing.

We design a simple and versatile strategy to synthesize pure Cu2O@CuO nanoporous materials with pores the size of 4~8 nm based on the laser irradiation of CuO powders in distilled water. In the presence of 1.8 mg Cu2O@CuO nanocomposites, the adsorption of a nearly 99.69% MB solution (80 mg/L, 3 mL) can be achieved after 1 min, while 95.35% via 200 mg original CuO powders. The porous structures and the abundant hydroxyl (-OH) groups formed on the surfaces enable the Cu2O@CuO nanocomposites to have many more adsorption sites. Our results have opened up a novel green paradigm of wielding laser light as a versatile tool for sculpting porous nanocomposites without any residual reagents.

Cu 2 O nanowire mesocrystals (NWMCs), which possess well-defined octahedral morphology and high-porosity architecture with anisotropic interpenetrating nanowires, have attracted considerable attention owing to their superior physical and chemical properties. However, the current synthetic approach for Cu 2 O NWMCs using graphene oxide as modifier leads to uncontrollable products and low productivity (~30 %), which largely hinder their further industrial application. Herein, we report a modified synthetic approach for controllable and large-scale preparation of Cu 2 O NWMCs using perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride molecule as modifier. The effects of growth time and initial pH on the morphology of final products have been systemically investigated. Under the optimal reaction condition with initial pH of 5.3 and reaction time of 15 h, the well-defined octahedral Cu 2 O NWMCs can be obtained with a productivity as high as ~75 %. In addition, this synthetic approach can be easily scaled up from 50 to 500 mL autoclave. The ability of high productivity and reproducibility in synthesis of Cu 2 O NWMCs enable us to further study their peroxidase-like activity by catalyzing the oxidation of o -phenylenediamine in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The Cu 2 O NWMCs have exhibited a superior catalytic activity with the K
cat of 1.14 × 10 −2 , 10 times higher than that of horseradish peroxidase. Moreover, the Cu 2 O NWMCs can also retain 69.5 % of their initial activities after 10-batch redox reactions. Our results provide a facile approach to controllable and large-scale synthesis of Cu 2 O NWMCs using homogeneous molecule modifier and open up opportunities to use Cu 2 O NWMCs as nanozyme for future industrial application.

Cu2O is an important compound for many promising applications; however, its real state under serious application conditions, such as redox atmosphere of catalysis reactions, has seldom been investigated. In this study, a dramatic and sustainable activity enhancement for CO oxidation on catalytically used Cu2O nanoporous sphere samples was discovered as compared to that on their fresh counterparts. To illustrate the phenomenon, comprehensive characterizations such as XRD, H2-TPR, TEM, XPS, and CO-TPD were performed on fresh and used Cu2O samples. It was found that after one or several catalytic runs, the main phase among the used samples retained the crystalline feature of Cu2O. However, the surface would transform into a stable multivalent composite interface with almost unchanged Cu(II) : Cu(I) ratio (around 4.0) and active oxygen distribution, even after only one catalytic run for CO oxidation; this indicated a notable reaction-induced or in situ surface restructuring effect of the Cu2O substrates. Compared to that of pure Cu2O, CuO, and reported CuxO samples, the active chemisorbed oxygen on these in situ restructured samples was observed in particularly higher surface composition (with the ratio of chemisorbed oxygen to lattice oxygen being around 5.5); this was further demonstrated to be highly efficient for the oxidization of CO in a relatively low temperature range even in the absence of O2 in the atmosphere and could be the main contributor to speed up CO oxidation in these samples. A similar enhancement in the activity on the used samples for CO oxidation as compared to that on the fresh samples was further testified in Cu2O nanomaterials with different morphologies such as cubic, octahedral, and 18-facet polyhedral nanoparticles; this implied that the surface restructuring effect under a redox reaction atmosphere was a common feature of the Cu2O-based materials, and the transformed surface could act as a superior and stable interface for heterogeneous catalysis. These findings might help in recognizing the real state of Cu2O-containing materials under serious application conditions or designing highly efficient Cu2O-based materials via convenient atmosphere-controlled manipulation for advanced applications.

Gas sensors with high sensitivity at and below room temperature, especially below freezing temperature, have been expected for practical application. The lower working temperature of gas sensor is better for the manufacturability, security and environmental protection. Herein, we propose a H 2 S gas sensor with high sensitivity at and below room temperature, even as low as −30 °C, based on Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 nano/microstructure heteroarrays prepared by 2D electrodeposition technique. This heteroarray was designed to be a multi-barrier system, and which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The sensor demonstrates excellent sensitivity, sub-ppm lever detection, fast response, and high activity at low temperature. The enhanced sensing property of sensor was also discussed with the Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 p-p heterojunction barrier modulation and Cu 2 S conductance channel. We realize the detection of the noxious H 2 S gas at ultra-low temperature in a more security and environmental protection way.

The oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds in gas-phase is of great importance in organic chemistry and industrial process. Herein, the catalyst CuPd–Cu 2 O/Ti-powder is prepared by depositing Cu(NO 3 ) 2 and Pd(NO 3 ) 2 on Ti powder support followed by in-situ activation in reaction stream, which delivers high-performance for the gas-phase oxidation of alcohols. Compared with Cu/Ti-powder and Pd/Ti-powder, CuPd–Cu 2 O/Ti-powder exhibits higher stability and activity in alcohol oxidation reaction. The catalyst is characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and ICP. The results indicate that CuPd(alloy)–Cu 2 O formed during the reaction contributes to the high activity and stability.
