A series of Er-doped TiO2 photocatalysts, using Er(NO3)3·6H2O precursor ranging from 0.5 to 2 mol %, were synthesized via sol–gel method with titanium(IV) isopropoxide solution as reactant. The structure and properties of as-prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV–vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and photocurrent. The as-synthesized Er-doped TiO2 nanoparticles demonstrated improved photocatalytic activities for the photodegradation of selected volatile organic compounds, including acetaldehyde, o-xylene, and ethylene. Additionally, high photodegradation of acetaldehyde was recorded in the visible region (λ > 420 nm). XPS analysis revealed that a handful of Er in anatase TiO2 was presented in the form of Er2O3, which benefited by increasing the specific surface area ranging from 59.28 to 110.34 m2/g and consequently enhanced the adsorption capacity for acetaldehyde, o-xylene, and ethylene 3.3, 3.7, and 3.8 times, respectively, in contrast to the undoped TiO2. Electron spin resonance results showed that Er doping caused production of oxygen vacancies (VO) and Ti3+, which promoted the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. The TiO2 samples containing 0.5–1.5% Er content exhibited higher photoactivity in comparison with other samples. The highest removal efficiency of acetaldehyde and o-xylene within 100 min was 99.2 and 84.6%, respectively, and ethylene degradation efficiency reached 22.4% within 180 min. Furthermore, the visible light elimination efficiency of acetaldehyde was 25.5%. Finally, the results suggested that Er doping predominantly inhibited the catalyst poisoning in the degradation of o-xylene.

A series of 10 at% Yb3+, 5 at% Er3+ co-doped NaGd(MoxW1-xO4)2 (x = 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9) single crystals were grown by Czochralski method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement and FT-IR analyses were employed to comprehensively analyze the crystal structure. The results firmly established that the crystals belong to the tetragonal system, with the space group identified as I4₁/a. In addition, the 1.5 μm spectral properties of the crystals were investigated, including emission, absorption and fluorescence decay characteristics. Importantly, the study delved deep into uncovering how the crystal's composition impacts its spectroscopic properties. As the crystal composition changes, there is a notable inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral. A maximum full width at half-maximum (FWHM) at 1535 nm was obtained to be 83 nm in (MoO4)1.0(WO4)1.0 composition crystal. However, the maximum absorption and emission cross-sections were achieved in (MoO4)1.4(WO4)0.6 component crystal with values of 1.15 × 10-20 cm2 and 1.05 × 10-20 cm2, respectively. Besides, for (MoO4)1.4(WO4)0.6 composition crystal, a positive gain cross-section is obtained at around 1535 nm for a population inversion ratio β above 0.4. The results show that double molybdate/tungstate mixed crystals co-doping with Yb3+ and Er3+ are promising for 1.5 μm near-infrared solid-state lasers.

Novel flower-like α-NaYb(Mn)F4:Er3+/Tm3+@NaYF4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as luminescent nanothermometers have been developed by combining liquid–solid solution hydrothermal strategy with thermal decomposition strategy. Under 980 nm excitation, they exhibit intense upconversion luminescence and temperature-dependent upconversion luminescence over a wide temperature range. The influence of temperature on “band-shape” upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra and the intensity of emission bands are analyzed and discussed in detail. We further successfully test and verify that intensity ratios REr of 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 and 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 and RTm of 1G4 → 3H5 and 3H4 → 3H6 are sensitive to temperature, and the population of active ions follows Boltzmann-type population distribution very well. These luminescent nanothermometers could be applied over a wide temperature range from 123 to 423 K with high sensitivity, which enable them to be excellent candidates for temperature sensors.

In this work, water-soluble Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3 upconversion (UC) nanospheres with uniform morphology have been successfully synthesized via a solid-state-chemistry thermal decomposition process. With 980 nm near-infrared irradiation, the Bi2O3:Yb3+/Er3+ nanospheres have bright UC luminescence (UCL). Moreover, multicolor UC emissions (from green to red) can be tuned by simply changing the Yb3+ ions doping concentration. After citric acid molecules were grafted on the surface of Bi2O3:20% Yb3+/2% Er3+ nanospheres, the MTT assay on HeLa cells and CCK-8 assay on osteoblasts show that the UC nanospheres exhibit excellent stability and biocompatibility. The possibility of using these nanoprobes with red UCL for optical imaging in vivo has been demonstrated. Furthermore, Bi3+ and Yb3+ containing nanospheres as binary contrast agent also exhibited significant enhancement of contrast efficacy than iodine-based contrast agent via X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging at different voltage setting (80–140 kVp), indicating they have potential as CT imaging contrast agent. Thus, Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3 nanospheres could be used as dual modality probe for optical and CT imagings.

Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ dimer based upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) have great prospects in biological and photonic applications. In this work, the broadband upconversion luminescence (UCL) of Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ dimer in perovskite nanocrystals is systematically engineered under multi-wavelength excitations. Under the excitation of 980, 940 and 915 nm lasers, KCdF 3 :Yb 3+ /Mn 2+ UCNCs generate yellow broadband UCL from Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ dimer at room temperature and achieve maximum intensity as Mn 2+ concentration reaches 7.5 mol%. By introducing Er 3+ ions into the KCdF 3 host matrix, the UCL color can be further tuned to pure red with high spectral purity, and the red-to-green (R/G) UC intensity ratio is promoted dramatically. The bidirectional energy transfer (ET) processes between Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ dimer, Mn 2+ and Er 3+ ions facilitate color modulation, supported by power dependence and lifetime measurements. Especially, the ET efficiency is evaluated under the multi-wavelength excitations, confirming the high efficiency of ET processes from Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ dimer to Er 3+ ions. Moreover, the obtained KCdF 3 :Yb 3+ /Mn 2+ /Er 3+ UCNCs present a maximum magnetization intensity of 2.01 emu/g when Mn 2+ concentration reaches 98.5 mol%. Both the tunable UCL and excellent paramagnetism properties indicate that these KCdF 3 :Yb 3+ /Mn 2+ /Er 3+ UCNCs have the capability of bifunctional biomarkers of nanomaterials and can be a candidate for bio-related applications.

The quest for efficient and tunable luminescent materials has been at the forefront of research in the fields of chemistry and materials science. This work delves into the investigation of the luminescence properties of Er3+ ions triggered by 1% Te4+ in the environmentally benign perovskite Cs2NaYbCl6 (CNYC) crystals, aiming to enhance their efficiency and tune the luminescence color. The ratio of the green (2H11/2, 4S3/2–4I15/2) to red (4F9/2–4I15/2) emissions of Er3+ can be freely tunable by varying the concentration of Er3+ and producing the defects induced by codoping Te4+. The calculations reveal that the multiexcitonic excitations of Er3+ stem from f–f (4I15/2–4G11/2, 2H9/2) rather than d–f transitions. The broadened excitation, tuning of color, and enhancement of efficiency achieved in the luminescence perovskite crystals Cs2NaYbCl6:Te4+, Er3+ (CNYC:Te4+,Er3+) presents promising opportunities for the development of advanced optoelectronic devices with superior performance. Moreover, our investigation demonstrates the tunable luminescence response of CNYC:Er3+ to temperature variations, offering potential applications in temperature sensing.

The development of multi-mode self-calibrated photothermal thermometers for high-temperature applications is critically needed. However, most existing strategies are limited by single mode and severe thermal quenching. To address this, activator Er 3+ , Tm 3+ , and sensitizer Yb 3+ co-doped Y 2 W 3 O 12 (YWO) negative thermal expansion (NTE) phosphors have been developed, which exhibit effective resistance to thermal quenching in the up-conversion luminescence under 980 nm excitation. Moreover, an abnormal 3-photon-dominated up-conversion process was observed in YWO:18Yb/2Er/0.5Tm powder, attributed to the cross-relaxation (CR) between Er 3+ and energy transfer (ET) from Er 3+ to Tm 3+ . In addition, benefiting from the effect of NTE and the limited ET process in YWO:18Yb/2Er/0.5Tm, the relative intensity of the temperature-dependent up-conversion from the 2 H 11/2 , 4 S 3/2 , and 1 G 4 level, as well as their state splitting luminescence, exhibit distinct disparities. Furthermore, based on the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technique, a four mode self-calibrated optical thermometer using YWO:18Yb/2Er/0.5Tm powder is designed. The thermometer exhibits acceptable sensitivity, with absolute sensitivity ( S a) and relative sensitivity ( S r) reaching 0.006 K -1 at 293 K and 0.26% K -1 at 543 K, respectively. The developed thermometer could provide a reference for self-calibration, and its wide spectral operating range ensures the reliability of temperature sensing, which has the potential to be used in some high-temperature conditions.

The KYb(MoO 4 ) 2 : Er 3+ , Y 3+ phosphors were synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction method. By further doping Y 3+ ions, the near-infrared (NIR, 804 nm, 4 I 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 ) luminescence of KYb(MoO 4 ) 2 : 0.1 % Er 3+ phosphor is greatly enhanced. Based on the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra, the optimal doping concentration of Y 3+ ions were 7.5 %. Its near-infrared UCL intensity is about 26.9 times that of undoped Y 3+ ions. Through a series of characterization methods, we find that the enhancement of NIR upconversion emission is due to the generation of defect bands. It plays a crucial role in facilitating the transfer of energy from green light level ( 2 H 11/2 , 4 S 3/2 ) to red light level ( 4 F 9/2 ) and near-infrared level. To explain the luminescence mechanism, the power dependence, UV-VI-NIR absorption spectra , excitation spectra at 804 nm and emission spectra at 380 nm were studied. In addition, the 804 nm single near-infrared UCL intensity of KYb (MoO 4 ) 2 : Er 3+ , Y 3+ shows a linear variation with temperature in the temperature range of 298 K–673 K. The maximum sensitivity is 0.13 % K −1 . This study provides a new method and theoretical support for the application of near-infrared UCL in optical temperature measurement.

A novel near-infrared antibacterial material, Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+ tridoped TiO2 nanopowder, was synthesized and applied to kill Aeromonas hydrophia with a maximal bactericidal rate of 65% in 90 min under 980 nm laser irradiation. However, Fe3+-TiO2 or Er3+-Yb3+-TiO2 nanopowders obtained under the same conditions barely could kill Aeromonas hydrophia. The initial energy applied in the photocatalysis antibacterial process is supplied by the upconversion emission of Er3+ and Yb3+ and the codoping of Fe3+, which has intensified the light absorption intensity and enlarged the absorption range. The analyses of phase structure and the optical properties including XRD, UV−vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and upconversion photoluminescence spectra of Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+ tridoped TiO2 nanopowder have been performed in detail to reveal the complex energy transfer and change mechanism. According to our experimental results, the mechanism has been demonstrated involving the upconversion emission, multistep excitation by means of intermediate energy level, capture and transfer electrons of Fe3+, and so on. The photocatalystic antibacterial function of Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+-TiO2 under near-infrared instead of ultraviolet light is also reported. Because of the strong penetrability of near-infrared, this kind of material may be used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) to kill bacteria or tumors directly.

Hexagonal Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped LaZrTa 3 O 11 (LZTO) phosphor was prepared by molten salt synthesis with B 2 O 3 flux. Holding temperature, holding time, solute and solvent ratio were regulated. The green upconversion luminescence (UCL) integral intensity of the optimal sample can reach 29.2% of β-NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ under 980 nm laser excitation. This outstanding pure green UCL is due to the low phonon energy, Er 3+ /Yb 3+ monolayer (2D) distribution, asymmetry of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ doped lattice sites, and low oxygen vacancy. The maximum relative temperature sensitivity attains 0.01221 K −1 at 303 K by employing luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technique. LZTO:Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphor can be used in temperature sensing.

Harvesting near-infrared (NIR) light to address the energy crisis and environmental pollution remains a challenge. In this study, full-spectrum-driven photocatalysts were realized through the design of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F nanoplates. The Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F: Yb 3+ , Er 3+ nanoplates, when excited at 980 nm, demonstrated nearly single-band red upconversion (UC) emission. Furthermore, the corresponding UC emission mechanism was elucidated through the relationship between pump power and the UC emission spectrum. The experimental results and DFT calculation analysis revealed that the Er 3+ dopant ions form an impurity energy level, which broadens the light photoresponse range and promotes the separation of electron-hole (e − /h + ) pairs. Consequently, Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F:Yb 3+ , Er 3+ nanoplates exhibit 1.42 times better photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) than Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F under full-spectrum light irradiation and 4.54 times better than Bi 3 Ti 2 O 8 F: Er 3+ under NIR light irradiation. The trapping experiments and EPR analysis reveal that •O 2 – and h + are the main active species during the photocatalytic reaction process. Thus, this work demonstrates that efficient bismuth-based broadband photocatalysts can be developed through the simultaneous application of UC emission and doping engineering.

The exploration of acquiring excellent thermal performance of luminescence thermometers has become a key focus, owing to their non-contact measurement, high spatial resolution and rapid response. However, many luminescence thermometers still suffer from unsatisfactory relative sensitivity and a single temperature sensing mode. Herein, we report a Lu2CaMg2Ge3O12 garnet structure oxide with a stronger crystal field for ultra-sensitive and multimodal luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) optical thermometry based on the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) of Nd3+ (4F7/2 and 4F3/2) and Er3+ (2H11/2 and 4S3/2), where the relative sensitivity (Sr) can be up to 2.62% K−1 and 1.15% K−1, respectively. Furthermore, the energy level splitting factor Ke, which is used to quantify the energy level splitting extent of the doped ions, is estimated with the help of the dielectric chemical bond theory of complex crystals. As a result of the strong crystal field, the near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive temperature sensing performance of Er3+ (4I13/2) is enabled by the Stark sublevels with the relative sensitivity value of 0.46% K−1. This work not only provides a fresh perspective for developing optical thermometers with outstanding temperature performance, but also provides inspiration for pursuing a multimodal luminescence thermometer.
