Highly sensitive and selective gas sensors hold great potential in disease diagnosis. However, the rational design of non-noble-metal-based, high-efficiency sensing materials for trace gas detection remains a crucial challenge. Herein, a chemiresistive sensor that can detect parts per billion (ppb)-level acetone was realized based on three-dimensional (3D) α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages, which were achieved by a simple encapsulation and calcination process. In particular, we found that Fe species play an intriguing role in the evolution from Fe-ZIF-8 to heterogeneous α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages. α-Fe2O3 functionalization empowered the α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocage-based sensor with a high response of 45.25, an ultrafast response (7 s) and recovery (6 s) time toward 50 ppm of acetone, a limit of detection (LOD) of 500 ppb, and superior selectivity. Moreover, in situ Fourier transform infrared analysis allowed one to devise of an acetone sensing mechanism for dissociative acetone adsorbed on the α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages, involving the first oxidation of acetone to form formate and acetate complexes, followed by further oxidation to CO2 and H2O. The enhanced acetone sensing performance can be attributed to the high specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, well-tuned heterojunction, and optimal acid–base property.

The treatment of osteoporosis remains a critical challenge due to the limitations of current therapies in simultaneously restoring homeostasis of bone metabolism and modulating the chronic inflammation of bone microenvironment. While the acidic microenvironment greatly exacerbates bone resorption, it also lays the foundation for the application of responsive therapeutic nanoplatforms. Herein, inspired by the rocket-like responsive cascade release principle-defined by a “booster-payload” mechanism, in which a metal ion-doped mesoporous silica shell serves as an early-release booster and a calcium sulfide core acts as a sustained-release payload-a bone-targeted nanoplatform (CSM 3 P) was developed. This platform integrates calcium sulfide nanoparticles with magnesium/manganese-doped mesoporous silica for bone targeting. It leverages the pathological acidic microenvironment of osteoporosis to enable stimuli-responsive and stepwise release of multiple mineral ions (Mg 2+ /Mn 2+ /Ca 2+ ) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), coordinates bone regeneration and regulation of the osteoimmunological microenvironment and thereby achieves metal-gas targeted therapy for osteoporosis. This acidic responsive and sequential ion/gas release model establishes a self-reinforcing therapeutic cycle, where the pathological acidity itself drives a synergistic and adaptive treatment regimen. Both in vitro and in vivo evaluations demonstrate the superior efficacy of CSM 3 P in ameliorating the inflammatory bone microenvironment and rebalancing bone remodeling. This work offers a novel paradigm for intelligent, feedback-driven nanotherapy against osteoporosis and other microenvironment-associated diseases.

This work presents the noncontact immobilization of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene on a planar microwave resonator sensor via a polyimide film to enhance the gas detection sensitivity, enabling the characterization of the part per million-level of acetone gas. Sandwiching a polyimide (PI) film confined an intense electromagnetic field between the resonator’s interdigital capacitor structure and the MXene layer, maintaining a significant interaction between the acetone gas molecules and the resonator’s EM field via the MXene layer. Therefore, contactless immobilization of the MXene layer enhanced the acetone gas detection sensitivity by 110% compared to the resonator gas sensor with MXene deposited directly on the resonator surface. As a proof of concept , two sensor prototypes were implemented using resonators with layers of PI film and MXene and resonators with MXene only and were applied to detect a wide range of acetone gas concentrations. Immobilizing the layers of PI film and MXene on the microwave resonator achieved a linear correlation between the resonant frequency and acetone gas concentration with high sensitivity (17.85 kHz/ppm, a fast response time (60 s), and recovery time (85 s).

Background Focused ultrasound (FUS) combined with microbubbles (MBs) has emerged as a potential approach for opening the blood–brain barrier (BBB) for delivering drugs into the brain. However, MBs range in size of microns and thus can hardly extravasate into the brain parenchyma. Recently, growing attention has been paid to gas vesicles (GVs), which are genetically encoded gas-filled nanostructures with protein shells, due to their potential for extravascular targeting in ultrasound imaging and therapy. However, the use of GVs as agents for BBB opening has not yet been investigated. Methods In this study, GVs were extracted and purified from Halobacterium NRC-1 . Ultrasound imaging performance of GVs was assessed in vitro and in vivo. Then, FUS/GVs-mediated BBB opening for small molecular Evans blue or large molecular liposome delivery across the BBB was examined. Results The results showed a good contrast performance of GVs for brain perfusion ultrasound imaging in vivo. At the acoustic negative pressure of 1.5 MPa, FUS/GVs opened the BBB safely, and effectively enhanced Evans blue and 200-nm liposome delivery into the brain parenchyma. Conclusion Our study suggests that biosynthetic GVs hold great potential to serve as local BBB-opening agents in the development of new targeted drug delivery strategies for central nervous system disorders.

The swelling characteristics of porous media in the offshore natural gas hydrate reservoir have an important effect on the stability of the reservoir. In this work, the physical property and the swelling of porous media in the offshore natural gas hydrate reservoir were measured. The results show that the swelling characteristics of the offshore natural gas hydrate reservoir are influenced by the coupling of the montmorillonite content and the salt ion concentration. The swelling rate of porous media is directly proportionate to water content and the initial porosity, and inversely proportionate to salinity. Compared with water content and salinity, the initial porosity has much obvious influence on the swelling, which the swelling strain of porous media with the initial porosity of 30% is three times more than that of montmorillonite with the initial porosity of 60%. Salt ions mainly affect the swelling of water bound by porous media. Then, the influence mechanism of the swelling characteristics of porous media on the structural characteristics of reservoir was tentatively explored. It can provide a basic date and scientific basis for furthering the mechanical characteristics of the reservoir in the hydrate exploitation in the offshore gas hydrate reservoir. Keywords:natural gas hydrate;porous media;swelling characteristics;structural characteristics

The phenomenon of transformer failure caused by oil-sulphur corrosion of oil₋paper insulation system has always been concerned by scholars. Irgamet 39 is the most used metal passivator for inhibiting sulphur corrosion. However, Irgamet 39 causes abnormal dissolved gas in oil during the process of exerting anti-corrosion effect. Herein, the gas production mechanism of Irgamet 39 and its long-term corrosion resistance were investigated. Compared with other metal passivators, the Irgamet 39 produces more dissolved gases in oil, especially H 2 , CO and CO 2 . The main sources of free radicals in the gas production process are from the branched chains of the Irgamet 39 structure (−CH 2 N(C 8 H 17 ) 2 and −CH 3 ). Furthermore, the ageing products of insulating paper and oil promote the cleavage of the chain in the Irgamet 39 molecule, which then causes Irgamet 39 to generate more dissolved gases. Irgamet 39 exhibits excellent long-term corrosion inhibition properties, while it also leads to abnormal gases in the oil, which can affect the interpretation of the dissolved gas analysis data and thus interfere with the diagnosis. This work provides useful information for the practical application of Irgamet 39 and helps electrical workers make reasonable predictions for transformer problems.

Due to stricter worldwide environmental mandates on SO2 emission from oil and gas industrial facilities, the modified Claus process, which is the primary tool for reducing emission of SO2 into the atmosphere in these facilities, has undergone a lot of innovative changes during the past decades. An example of such innovation is the addition of what is called tail gas treating (TGT) technologies. Currently, advanced TGT technologies ensure that gas plants and refineries emit less than 0.01% (v/v) of the sulfur species that enter into the sulfur recovery units; they commonly use absorption-based processes to separate sulfur species from the tail gas. Because of this requirement, TGT technologies are expensive. This paper reports the data that were obtained from bench-scale tests that were carried out to assess the feasibility of using commercially available adsorbents for the process that is described in the patent, Two-Stage Adsorption Process for Claus Tail Gas Treatment, US Patent No.10662061. In one of the embodiments of this process, the tail gas is treated in two steps. It is first dehydrated by 3A molecular sieves and then by 5A molecular sieves to remove H2S. The separation in the second step will ensure the presence of a rich H2S-laden stream that is ready for routing to the thermal reactor of the modified Claus process. The data collected in this study indicate the following: (1) Commercial molecular sieves can be used for cost-effective tail gas treatment of natural gas plants’ and refineries’ sulfur recovery units. (2) This cost-effectiveness of such use can be valid when molecular sieve material selection is as described in US Patent No.10662061, “Two-Stage Adsorption Process for Claus Tail Gas Treatment”. (3) Adsorption-based tail gas treatment is advantageous since it results in enabling the global oil and gas industry to virtually eliminate all SO2 emissions from its facilities.

Among deep-sea oil and gas transportation, kinetic inhibitors of gas hydrates are widely added in transportation pipelines to prevent gas hydrates from clogging pipelines. Unfortunately, the micro-and nano-sized clay particles will enter the wellbore to adsorb the practical components of the inhibitors, thereby weakening the inhibitory effect of the inhibitors on hydrates. This work shows that 1:1-type layered silicates can only adsorb inhibitors through the surface, while 2:1-type layered silicates can adsorb inhibitors through both surface and intercalation. The clay particles with adsorbed inhibitors tend to be aggregated and settled because the surface charge density and the potential energy between the particles are reduced. Meanwhile, the inhibitors adsorbed on the surface of the clay lose their inhibitory effect on gas hydrates. Therefore, the suppression effect of layered silicate minerals on inhibitors should be considered in clay-rich oil and gas transportation pipelines.

The performance of activated carbon (AC) will be severely affected for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture in flue gas, as they usually suffer from competitive adsorption of water vapor. Establishment of a barrier against moisture on the surface of porous adsorbent material could potentially address this issue. Zeolite-like metal–organic frameworks (ZIF-8) as a promising adsorbent material demonstrates hydrophobic properties, large specific surface area, and highly porous structure. Here, by further growth of ZIF-8 on polydopamine (PDA)-coated bio-based carbon (AC@PDA), we fabricate hydrophobic final product (AC@ZIF-8). The CO 2 capture capacities of AC@ZIF-8 was 41.69 cm 3 /g, which is only 13.61% lower than that of the initial AC under dry conditions. The hydrophobic ZIF-8 layer can effectively prevent water molecules from reaching the interior AC. Therefore, the adsorption of CO 2 for AC@ZIF-8 decreased by only 16.74% under high relative humidity, while it decreased by 61.27% for bare AC. This strategy will broaden the applications of carbon-based adsorbents for CO 2 capture under severely humid conditions. We believe that this approach is also applicable for an extensive set of CO 2 capture materials that suffer from water instability.

Gas hydrates provide alternative solutions for gas storage & transportation and gas separation. However, slow formation rate of clathrate hydrate has hindered their commercial development. Here we report a form of porous ice containing an unfrozen solution layer of sodium dodecyl sulfate, here named active ice, which can significantly accelerate gas hydrate formation while generating little heat. It can be readily produced via forming gas hydrates with water containing very low dosage (0.06 wt% or 600 ppm) of surfactant like sodium dodecyl sulfate and dissociating it below the ice point, or by simply mixing ice powder or natural snow with the surfactant. We prove that the active ice can rapidly store gas with high storage capacity up to 185 V g V w −1 with heat release of ~18 kJ mol −1 CH 4 and the active ice can be easily regenerated by depressurization below the ice point. The active ice undergoes cyclic ice−hydrate−ice phase changes during gas uptake/release, thus removing most critical drawbacks of hydrate-based technologies. Our work provides a green and economic approach to gas storage and gas separation and paves the way to industrial application of hydrate-based technologies.

The development of mesoporous heterogeneous structure through a facile and repeatable method with high gas sensing performance is always highly desirable in the chemical sensor field. Herein, the mesoporous In 2 O 3 -ZnO heterogeneous structure has been successfully synthesized via a reproducible hydrothermal method . The characterizations of sensing materials demonstrate that the porous heterogeneous structure can be easily constructed. Gas sensing investigation indicates that the gas sensor based on 15 at. % In 2 O 3 -ZnO exhibits the obvious enhanced ethanol gas sensing performances compared with that based on pure ZnO material in our previous work, including lower detection limit (200 ppb), lower base line resistance (∼ 1 Mohm), satisfying long term stability and improved moisture tolerance. The enhanced gas sensing properties can be mainly attributed to the In 2 O 3 -ZnO heterogeneous structure and unique microstructure, which will be deliberately discussed in the sensing mechanism part.

Micron- and submicron-sized droplets have extensive applications in biomedical diagnosis and drug delivery. Moreover, accurate high-throughput analysis requires a uniform droplet size distribution and high production rates. Although the previously reported microfluidic coflow step-emulsification method can be used to generate highly monodispersed droplets, the droplet diameter ( d ) is constrained by the microchannel height ( b ), \(d\gtrsim 3b\) , while the production rate is limited by the maximum capillary number of the step-emulsification regime, impeding emulsification of highly viscous liquids. In this paper, we report a novel, gas-assisted coflow step-emulsification method, where air serves as the innermost phase of a precursor hollow-core air/oil/water emulsion. Air gradually diffuses out, producing oil droplets. The size of the hollow-core droplets and the ultrathin oil layer thickness both follow the scaling laws of triphasic step-emulsification. The minimal droplet size attains \(d\approx 1.7b\) , inaccessible in standard all-liquid biphasic step-emulsification. The production rate per single channel is an order-of-magnitude higher than that in the standard all-liquid biphasic step-emulsification and is also superior to alternative emulsification methods. Due to low gas viscosity, the method can also be used to generate micron- and submicron-sized droplets of high-viscosity fluids, while the inert nature of the auxiliary gas offers high versatility.
