Biocatalytic membranes are a green and effective option for the removal of micropollutants (MPs) from water. The effective immobilization of enzyme together with facial fabrication of membrane is constantly required. Herein, a biocatalytic membrane was prepared by one-step pressure-assisted self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO), polyethyleneimine (PEI) and laccase (Lac) on the surface of hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) membrane. The physical and chemical property of membranes, and the immobilization of laccase were characterized. Under optimal conditions, the biocatalytic membrane has a bisphenol A (BPA) removal rate of 95.3%, and the rejection for dyes can be higher than 97% with salts rejection of less than 23% and pure water permeance of 207.4 LMH/bar. Meanwhile, GO-PEI-Lac membrane retained stable removal rate under a wide pH range and feed BPA concentrations. The membrane can also remove various phenolic MPs. In addition, the GO-PEI-Lac membrane retained more than 80% removal rate after 6 cycles. Overall, this study opens up a convenient avenue for the facial fabrication of high-efficient biocatalytic membranes for MPs removal.

ZnO nanosheets , 2D/1D ZnO/CdS hybrid and ternary ZnO/CdS/GO S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst were fabricated by a low-temperature hydrothermal technique. As expected, by investigating the degradation efficiency of rhodamine B under simulated sunlight, with the assistance of CdS and GO, the ternary heterostructure showed superior photocatalytic activity . The test results display that the dye degradation rate constant of ZnO/CdS/GO is about 1.75 × 10 −2 min −1 , which is 3.6 times higher than that of bare ZnO. SEM results prove the finding that the content of CdS can regulate the size and distribution of ZnO NSs, increasing the specific surface area of the sample. Besides, the results of ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorbance spectra revealed that the addition of CdS and GO significantly synergistically increased the visible light absorption of ZnO, and also shortened the band gap of ZnO. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and transient photocurrent response (TPR) results show that the presence of CdS and GO synergistically promotes the rapid separation of photoexcited carriers in ZnO. Notably, the GO also further speeds up the transmission rate of electrons and improves the photoelectric stability of the ZnO/CdS heterogeneous photocatalyst. The above changes can effectively promote the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts. Moreover, a reasonable S-scheme carriers migration mechanism was proposed with the assistance of Mott-Schottky (MS) test, VB-XPS and sacrificial agent experiments. Through comprehensive analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that ZnO/CdS S-scheme heterojunction and GO synergistically promote the photocatalytic performance of ZnO. Therefore, this thesis may provide a deeper insight into developing the practical application of ZnO-based heterojunction photocatalysts in pollutant degradation.

Residual antibiotics in water have become a primary source of water pollution due to their misuse. Recently, membranes, produced by layered nanomaterials such as graphene oxide (GO), boron nitride (BN) and transition metal dichalcogenides, have been used in water purification, desalination and molecule separation as they are energy saving and simple to operate. The performance of membranes is closely related to their structure and the properties of the nanomaterials used. In this work, BN nanosheets (BNNSs) and GO were used to fabricate a two-dimensional nanocomposite membrane in order to improve the membrane’s permeance. It should be mentioned that the corresponding equal mass of the pure GO membrane was almost impermeable for the antibiotic solution. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were inserted into the GO layers to increase the interlayer spacing and adsorb more antibiotics from the water. The resultant MWCNTs/BNNSs/GO membranes showed improved permeance and stable sieving capability for the antibiotic and small species. Specifically, permeance reached 30.2 L m−2h−1bar−1, which was much higher than pure GO membrane and the antibiotic rejection was 96.1%.Keywords:graphene oxide;boron nitride nanosheets;high permeance and selectivity;filtration membrane

Metal–organic framework (MOF) materials are a class of hybrid organic–inorganic supramolecular materials. Owing to their highest specific surface area, lowest crystal density and adjustable pore size and functional structure, MOF materials have the potential for some special applications in the field of adsorption of heavy metal contaminants. However, it is difficult to collect and reuse them in adsorption separation because of their nanometer size. Therefore, graphene oxide (GO) with good film-forming properties is used. In this paper, an f-ZIF-8@GO composite membrane material was developed by using GO and a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) material and was modified with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) by amine functionalization. After a series of structural characterizations, it was applied to the adsorption of copper ions in water and its adsorption properties were tested. The results showed that the adsorption capacity at pH = 6.0 was the largest, and an increase in temperature was not conducive to the adsorption reaction. The adsorption data were fitted to the Freundlich equation and the quasi-second order kinetic equation. The adsorption of Cu2+ on water was multilayer, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity was up to 1872.24 mg g−1. The prepared materials exhibited high selectivity to copper ions; they could be reused as adsorbents for many times and maintained high adsorption capacity. This kind of material is of great significance for the adsorption and separation of heavy metal ions in water.

Metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheets have emerged as promising materials for the construction of molecular sieve membranes due to their nanoscale thickness and highly oriented pore arrays. However, the development of defect-free MOF nanosheet membranes from rigid MOF nanosheets with efficient permselectivity and robust mechanical strength still remains a big challenge. Herein, we develop a facile GO-induced assembly strategy to design continuous and uniform two-dimensional MOF composite membranes, in which the copper 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate (CuBDC) nanosheets present a layer-stacking arrangement. With the assistance of flexible GO, the voids between the junctions of rigid MOF nanosheets are well-repaired, and the interlayer bonding interactions are strengthened, resulting in the fabrication of a continuous nanosheet membrane with robust mechanical strength. The obtained MOF nanosheet-based membranes display remarkable H2/CO2 separation performance with a superior H2 permeance of 9.6 × 10–7 mol m–2 s–1 Pa–1 and an ideal separation selectivity of 95.1 due to the well-defined size exclusion effect, showing great promise for H2 separation and purification. The repair strategy described here could also provide the blueprint for the development of other nanosheet-based membranes.

Graphene family nanomaterials (GFNs) have attracted significant attention due to their unique characteristics and applications in the fields of biomedicine and nanotechnology. However, previous studies highlighted the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of GFNs with size and oxidation state differences are still elusive. Therefore, we prepared graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO) of three different sizes (S-small, M-medium, and L-large), and characterized them using multiple surface-sensitive analytical techniques. In vitro assays using HEK 293T cells revealed that the small and large sizes of G and GO significantly reduced the cell viability and increased DNA damage, accompanying with activated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and induced various expressions of associated critical genetic markers. Moreover, the bacterial assays highlighted that G and GO caused strong acute toxicity on Tox2 bacteria. Effects of G were higher than GO and showed size dependent effect: L > M > S, while the medium size of GO induced mild genetic toxicity on RecA bacteria. In vivo assays revealed that exposure to G and GO caused the developmental toxicity, induced ROS generation, and activated related pathways (specifically GO) in zebrafish. Taken together, G showed stronger ability to decrease the survival rate and induce the acute toxicity, while GO showed obvious toxicity in terms of DNA damages, ROS generation, and abnormal gene expressions. Our findings highlighted that G and GO differentially induced toxicity based on their varying physical characteristics, especially sizes and oxidation state, and exposure concentrations and sensitivity of the employed in vitro and in vivo models. In short, this study provided deep insights on the negative effects of GFNs exposure.

Graphene oxide (GO) has been extensively used in various critical fields such as biomedicine, while its antibacterial properties and potential toxicities raised serious concerns in recent years. The impacts of GO on the intestinal microbiota and associated immune responses in the host are still ambiguous. In this study, we investigated the effects of GO chronic exposure (25 days) on the composition of the intestinal microbiota and immune response in female & male zebrafish at different concentrations (0.05, 0.5, and 5 mg L−1). Results demonstrated that the diversity and richness of the bacterial community at the phylum and genus levels significantly differed in the presence of GO between female and male zebrafish. The in vitro assay verified the effect of acute toxicity of GO on the survival ability of bacterial strains isolated from zebrafish intestines, albeit no changes in the bacterial metabolic functions were observed. Further, exposure to GO significantly altered the length and width of villi in the anterior intestines, caused abnormalities of the ultra-micro structure, and increased the number of inflammation-related cells detected by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, the elevated expression levels of crucial pro-inflammatory genes, such as tnf-α, ifn-γ, nf-κb, tlr-5, il-1β, and il-8, were significantly induced, while the expression levels of anti-inflammatory genes, such as il-4 and il-13, were inhibited, especially in male zebrafish. Taken all together, chronic exposure to GO disturbed the diversity and richness of intestinal microbes, increased the pathogenic bacterial community in zebrafish, induced damage to the gut tissues, and activated the inflammation response. These findings provided new insights into GO effects on the inflammation and intestinal microbiota in the host, which is closely linked with metabolisms and physiological activities in biological systems.

We have constructed biocompatible antibacterial nanoplatforms on the basis of a hybrid hydrogel via simple electrostatic interaction embedded with thin layer graphene oxide (GO) sheets modified with zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnO QDs). The materials possess favorable antibacterial efficacy, thereby providing excellent killing effect for Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) compared with materials that have single diagnosis and treatment mode. The excellent performance stems from the combined effects of hyperthermia produced under the near-infrared irradiation of GO sheets, reactive oxygen species, the release of Zn 2+ from ZnO QDs under acidic environment, and the antibacterial activity of hydrogel. The synergy of antibacterial nanoplatforms can be used for wound anti-inflammatory in vivo indicated by the wound healing results. The hybrid hydrogel causes no evident side effects to major organs in mice during wound healing. Therefore, the biocompatible multimodal therapeutic nanoplatforms have great potential for antibacterial activity and wound healing.

In recent years, using graphene to modify BiVO 4 has become a research hotspot. However, there are few reports on the effects of the graphene size and the loading content on the photocatalytic activity of the graphene-modified BiVO 4 . In this work, a series of BiVO 4 photocatalysts modified by oxide graphene (GO) of different sizes and loadings were prepared, characterized and their activities were investigated. The results showed that when the size of GO was 5–7 μm and the loading was 0.5 wt%, the phenol degradation rate over the GO-modified BiVO 4 was the best and reached 65.2% after 5 h visible light irradiation.

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes are robust and continue to attract great attention due to their fascinating properties, despite their potential issues regarding stability and selectivity in aqueous-phase processing. That being said, however, the functional moieties of GO could be used for membrane surface modification, while ensuring simultaneous removal and recycling of industrial organic dyes. Herein, we present a versatile porous structured polyvinylidene fluoride–graphene oxide (PVdF-GO) nanofibrous membranes (NFMs), prepared by using simple and straightforward electrospinning approach for selective separation and filtration. The GO nanosheets were distributed homogeneously throughout the PVdF nanofiber, regulating the surface morphology and performance of PVdF-GO NFM. The PVdF-GO NFMs possesses high mechanical strength and surface free energy (SFE), consequently resulting high permeation and filtration efficiency as compared to PVdF NFM. The selectivity (99%) toward positively charged dyes based on electrostatic attraction, while maintaining rejection (100%) for negatively charged dye from mixed solutions highlight the role of GO in PVdF-GO NFM, owing to uniform pores and negatively charged surface. In addition, the actual efficiency of NFMs could be recovered easily up to three consecutive filtration cycles by regeneration, thereby assuring high stability. The high permeation, purification and filtration efficiency, good stability and recycling of PVdF-GO NFMs are promising for use in practical water purification and applications, particularly for selective filtration and recycling of dyes.

Graphene oxide (GO) has been employed as filler in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to enhance gas selectivity as its high-aspect ratio structure makes the path of gas diffusion longer and tortuous, improving diffusivity selectivity of gases with different molecular sizes. However, the stacking and folding structure of GO nano-sheets leads to gas barrier effects which reduce gas permeability. In this paper, a strategy of modifying continuous ZIF-8 layer with ultra-microporosity and high gas permeability on the surface of GO nano-sheets was proposed to increase the size and connectivity of gas transfer passage. ZIF-8@GO nano-sheets were successfully prepared by two-step ultrasonic synthesis method of growing ZIF-8 on GO surface at room temperature and the flexibility of nano-sheets could be easily tuned by different reaction times. CO 2 permeability of ethyl cellulose (EC)/ZIF-8@GO MMMs achieves continuous enhancement with the increased loading of ZIF-8@GO compared with pure GO based MMMs which shows rare effective improvement in CO 2 permeability. EC/ZIF-8@GO membrane containing 20 wt% fillers exhibits CO 2 permeability of 203.3 Barrer together with CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 33.4, increased by 139% and 65% from that of pristine EC membrane respectively, and this performance is also higher than that of MMMs containing independent GO or ZIF-8. Having distinct improvement of CO 2 separation performance, the modification strategy using ultra-porosity MOFs to enhance gas transfer of 2D nano-sheets is promising for fabrication of high performance CO 2 separation membranes.

A novel polymerizable benzophenone photoinitiator containing acryloxy (BPA) was synthesized. The photopolymerization of photosensitive methacrylic-silicone resins (MASR) initiated by BPA was studied. Results show that BPA is an efficient photoinitiator, which could generate radicals from the photolysis reaction and be consumed via copolymerizing with MASR. The designed UV-curing silicone resins system initiated by BPA showed a high carbon-carbon double bonds conversion above 80% after 20 s UV radiation. In addition, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-TiO 2 composites were elaborated by hydrothermal reaction . The synergistic effects from graphene and TiO 2 further enhanced the carbon-carbon double bonds conversion of MASR to 86% with 15 s UV irradiation, demonstrating that the incorporated rGO-TiO 2 significantly improve the formulation UV-curing reactivity. Additionally, UV-cured MASR with rGO-TiO 2 showed an excellent thermal stability. This work proposes an efficient strategy to improve the polymerization degree of UV-curable photosensitive silicone resins.
