Constructing dual ionically cross-linked poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) /chitosan hydrogel materials embedded with chitosan decorated halloysite nanotubes for exceptional mechanical performance

Shi-Neng Li,Baoqiang Li,Zhi-Ran Yu,Yang Li,Kun-Yu Guo,Li-Xiu Gong,Yujie Feng,Dechang Jia,Yu Zhou,Long-Cheng Tang

Hydrogels with exceptional mechanical properties at high water content are crucial need for practical applications in various fields. However, achieving a hydrogel possessed splendid mechanical performance with well trade-off between tensile strength and toughness is highly demanded due to the mechanical weakness of conventional hydrogel. Herein, we report a novel kind of nanocomposite hydrogel developed by integrating chitosan decorated halloysite nanotubes (CS-f-HNTs) into dual cross-linked structure composed of chemical and Fe 3+ induced ionically cross-linked network. Combining the nanoparticle reinforcement with physical interactions including hydrogen bonds among polymer chains and ionic coordination interaction between Fe 3+ ions and functional groups on chitosan chains and the copolymer chains, the hydrogel exhibits extraordinary and balanced mechanical performance, including high strength (3.06 MPa), outstanding stretchability (>2000%) and superior toughness (47.6 MJ m −3 ) in which water content remains ~80 wt%. Based on microstructure observation and dynamic mechanical behavior analysis, we demonstrated that the addition of CS-f-HNTs effectively bridged polymer chains via physical interactions and strengthened dual cross-linked network, leading to significant improved mechanical properties. Moreover, the hydrogels also possessed remarkable self-recoverability (97.9% for small strain (200%) and 91.5% for large strain (1000%)) at room temperature and the related mechanism was discussed. The strategy developed herein may provide a newfound avenue in the design and development of strong and tough hydrogel for promising applications in loading-bearing structural materials.

Coupling Natural Halloysite Nanotubes and Bimetallic Pt–Au Alloy Nanoparticles for Highly Efficient and Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid

Xuemin Zhong,Peng Yuan,Yanfu Wei,Dong Liu,Dusan Losic,Mengyuan Li

The aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a key platform compound derived from biomass, to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a highly important reaction in the production of green and sustainable chemicals. Here, we developed a highly efficient and stable halloysite-supported Pt–Au alloy catalyst for the selective oxidation of HMF to FDCA. The catalyst was synthesized through the organosilane functionalization of halloysite nanotubes, followed by the in situ formation and dispersion of Pt–Au alloy nanoparticles on the internal and external surfaces of nanotubes. The composition, morphology, and structure of the prepared catalyst were characterized. The catalyst with the optimal composition of Pt/Au molar ratio of 1/4 and metal loading of 1.5 wt % exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for the oxidation of HMF to FDCA using O2 as an oxidant with 100% conversion of HMF and 99% selectivity of FDCA. This excellent catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the high dispersion and alloying effects of bimetallic nanoparticles, which promoted the activation of reactants or intermediates and further improved FDCA selectivity. Furthermore, the halloysite-supported Pt/Au bimetallic catalyst showed high stability and reusability. This study provides a promising strategy by combining clay mineral halloysite and bimetallic alloys for developing efficient catalysts with high FDCA selectivity and stability for the oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Multifunctional phase change composites based on sugarcane-derived honeycomb-like carbon and halloysite coating for efficient thermal management and tri-modal energy conversion

Xueke Jiao,Shuangqing Li,Lili Chai,Yafei Zhao,Bing Zhang

The practical application of organic phase change materials (PCMs) like polyethylene glycol (PEG) is limited by leakage, low thermal conductivity, and lack of active energy-harvesting capability. To address these challenges, a multifunctional composite PCM (PEG@HCS-85) was fabricated through a stepwise strategy. PEG was first encapsulated within a conductive, honeycomb-like carbonized sugarcane (CS) skeleton, followed by coating with a halloysite nanotube (HNT)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polypyrrole (PPy) film via rapid freezing. The CS framework provides shape stability, enhances thermal conductivity (0.483 W m −1  K −1 ), and enables efficient electro-thermal conversion via Joule heating. The HNT/PVA/PPy coating ensures excellent leakage resistance (100 wt% retention after heating at 100 °C) and boosts broadband solar absorption (98.0% average absorbance), leading to a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 96.48%. Moreover, when integrated with a thermoelectric generator (TEG), PEG@HCS-85 serves as a thermal buffer that stabilizes the temperature gradient, enabling sustained power generation even after illumination ceases (maximum power density 33.9 W m −2 under 3 kW m −2 with water cooling). The composite also exhibits good thermal cycling stability after 1000 cycles. This work demonstrates a rational design of a biomass-based, multifunctional PCM that combines efficient thermal storage with active multifunctional energy conversion, offering promising potential for solar thermal management, waste heat recovery, and round-the-clock renewable energy utilization.

Ionic conductivity and cycling stability-enhanced composite separator using hollow halloysite nanotubes constructed on PP nonwoven through polydopamine-induced water-based coating method

Cheng Wang,Guobin Zhu,Yuqin Hu,Jiuxiao Sun,Jing Xu,Luoxin Wang,Hua Wang,Chunzu Cheng

Ceramic-coating separator can meet the safety requirements of high-power battery through its good thermal tolerance, thus raising more attention recently. During preparation, aqueous coating has been considered as an environmentally friendly method. However, there are some drawbacks for direct coating to be tackled including weak bonding strength and too dense structures of coating layer. In this study, porous sodium alginate/halloysite nanotubes coating was constructed on PP nonwoven by polydopamine-induced water-based coating method to give PHS composite separators. Porous structures were produced by the delayed evaporation of nonsolvent N -methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) in coating slurry. These structures together with hollow structures of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were confirmed to boost porosity, wettability and ionic conductivity , thus PHS-4 separator with more HNTs introduced endowing battery with superior discharge performance (159.2 mAh g −1 ) at 0.2 C. Because of more space to store electrolyte, when wetted PHS-4 separator was ignited, it could also give self-extinguishing phenomenon at a shorter time. In addition, the pretreatment of polydopamine before aqueous coating and the overlap among HNTs with high aspect ratio were investigated to increase interfacial peeling strength, therefore PHS-4 separator displayed the best cycling stability with discharge capacity retention achieving 99.1%. Clearly, PHS-4 separator will bring prospect for LIB to pursue high performance and environmentally friendliness.

Wang Tingting,Chen Yihui,Hou Chunyan,Qiao Xiaoqiang

A novel type of PEG-modified halloysite was prepared and used as a hydrophilic interaction and cation exchange mixed-mode sorbent for solid-phase extraction of biogenic amines in fish samples. The eluates were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection after the derivatization with benzoyl chloride. The developed sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, zeta potential analyzer, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. After the optimization of various parameters influencing the extraction efficiency, the PEG-modified halloysite-based SPE method was evaluated. The adsorption capacities of putrescine, spermine, phenethylamine, and histamine were as high as 9.3, 8.5, 5.7, and 5.6 mg g −1 , respectively. Satisfactory reproducibility of sorbent preparation was obtained with within-batch and batch-to-batch relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 3.9% and 8.6%, respectively. The biogenic amine spiking recoveries in fish samples ranged from 84.3 to 105.5% with good RSDs lower than 7.8%. Intra-day and inter-day precision, expressed as RSDs, were better than 8.8%. The limits of detection of histamine, putrescine, phenethylamine, and spermine were 9.4, 1.9, 0.5, and 0.9 μg L −1 , respectively. This work provides a new hydrophilic interaction and cation exchange mixed-mode sorbent and is successfully applied to the extraction of trace biogenic amines from fish samples. Graphical Abstract

New energy-saving building developed by using polyethylene glycol/halloysite nanotube energy-storage blanket and heat-insulating glass with NaxWO3@SiO2 nano-coating

Lihua Peng,Ziqing Xu,Luomeng Chao,Dapeng Zheng,Haibin Yang,Changwei Sun,Hongzhi Cui

Transparent heat-insulation glass (HIG) with a highly selective light-absorbing coating and an energy-storage blanket (ESB) loaded with phase change materials show considerable potential in reducing building energy consumption. However, the energy-saving effect of a single material is usually not ideal, and the instability of HIG and ESB limits their applications. In this work, HIG with enhanced stability and a form-stable ESB was prepared. The temperature difference between various indoor areas and energy consumption were reduced simultaneously because of the temperature regulation function of the HIG and ESB in the light and dark areas. Na x WO 3 @SiO 2 -coated HIG showed excellent daylighting and near-infrared-light-shielding ability with visible light transmittance of 71% and near-infrared light transmittance of 16%, respectively. Moreover, polyethylene glycol/halloysite nanotube composite phase change material with a high enthalpy of 71.1 J/g and a suitable phase change temperature of 27.5 °C was prepared for the form-stable ESB. The test room experiment indicated that the combination of the HIG and ESB (HIG–ESB) reduced the indoor temperature difference from 6.8 °C to 0.9 °C and the maximum temperature by 33–40%. The energy consumption simulation revealed that the ESB can save energy in all selected cities, whereas HIG is only applicable to cities in warm regions. HIG–ESB achieved the highest annual energy-saving rate of 43.9% in Hong Kong. The joint application of the HIG and ESB provides a new strategy for developing passive energy-saving buildings.

C18-modified halloysite as a novel sorbent in matrix solid-phase dispersion for the extraction of bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol from human placenta

Yang Zhenglun,Chen Yihui,Jia Jianggang,Hou Chunyan,Xuan Rongrong,Wang Tingting

In the current study, the C18-modified halloysite was fabricated via silylation reaction and subsequently used as sorbent in matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) for the extraction of bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol from human placenta, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. The as-prepared sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Varied parameters such as methanol concentration in wash solvent, pH and salt concentration in elution solvent, elution volume, and mass ratio of sample to sorbent were optimized. The adsorption capacities of bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol on the developed C18-modified halloysite were 6.3 and 14.2 mg g −1 , respectively, higher than those on the commercial C18 silica gel. Under the optimal condition, the average recoveries of bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol by MSPD varied from 91.0 to 106.0%, and the relative standard deviations were less than 10.6% for human placenta samples. The limits of detection in the human placenta were 0.2 μg kg −1 for bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol. The simple C18-modified halloysite-based MSPD method holds great potential for the determination of trace bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol in the human placenta and other tissues of pregnant women with high sensitivity, accuracy, and reliability. Layer-by-layer assembly of modified halloysite nanotube using chitosan and sodium alginate to control the release of carvacrol and improve its stability

Yuemei Zhang,Haoyue Ning,Jing Xu,Lixin Lu

This study focused on the encapsulation of modified halloysite nanotubes (AHNT) using sodium alginate (SA) and chitosan (CS) through a layer-by-layer assembly technique. The objective was to develop new composites (CPs) that could control the release of carvacrol (Car) and enhance its stability. The influence of various conditions on the microstructure, chemical properties, and slow-release effects of the CPs was examined by adjusting the pH and concentration of the CS solution. The results indicated that the CPs (CS4.5–1), created with a CS solution concentration of 1 mg/mL at a pH of 4.5, in conjunction with a 1 mg/mL SA solution, demonstrated a superior encapsulation structure and a loading efficiency of 26.33 %. In vitro release experiments confirmed that the CPs exhibited effective slow-release properties for Car. Furthermore, the CS4.5–1 composite provided a physical barrier that resulted in the retention of 94.90 % and 83.61 % of Car after 6 h of exposure to UV light and heat, respectively. Antimicrobial and antioxidant assays indicated that CS4.5–1/Car possessed significant antioxidant properties and effectively inhibited the growth of E. coli and S. aureus . Consequently, the prepared CPs have the potential to enhance the bioactivity of active compounds and may be beneficial for food preservation and other applications.

Encapsulation of nano-sized ZIF-67 derived Co-NC on Au-loaded halloysite as composite catalyst for superior cooperative reduction of nitroaromatic pollutants

Jiasheng Fang,Zhenting Huang,Ming Chen,Shuo Zhao,Zhihui Liang,Qiongfang Zhuo,Yongfu Qiu

The utilization of natural clay minerals for synthesizing nano-sized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) supported materials offers great advantages for rational design of innovative catalysts, which promotes the low-cost and large-scale environmental remediation applications. This work reported a facile and scalable encapsulation-pyrolysis strategy to prepare novel Au-HNTs@Co-NC core-shell catalyst for catalytic reduction of nitroaromatic pollutants. The HNTs were modified with aminosilane on the external surface for effectively anchoring well-dispersed and ultrasmall Au NPs. Uniform nano-sized ZIF-67 crystals controllably embraced the Au-HNTs via in-situ growth induced by electrostatic adsorption. The N 2 atmosphere pyrolysis at 550 °C resulted in Co NPs embedded into N-doped carbon substrates, and transformed ZIF-67 crystals into Co-NC layers for preferable encapsulation and stabilization of Au NPs. The as-prepared Au-HNTs@Co-NC-550 catalyst manifested splendid catalytic performance for p-nitrophenol reduction, and achieved the reaction rate constant and TOF value estimated as 2.025 min −1 and 49.25 min −1 , which significantly exceeded the behaviors of as-prepared control materials. Moreover, the catalyst also displayed excellent catalytic capability toward the reduction of nitroanilines and homologues and isomers of p-nitrophenol, indicative of its decent general applicability. After 8 cycles of reactions, the catalyst still retained brilliant reusability and structural stability with good magnetic property for expedient separation. The advantageous hollow core-shell structure combining HNTs and ZIF-67 derivatives enhanced the reactant diffusion and transfer. The N doping and electronegativity difference between Co and Au aroused higher electron uptake and facilitated electron transport during the reduction process. Meanwhile, the Co–H and Au–H bonds formed the strong synergistic effect for superior cooperative catalytic performance of the catalyst.

A smart anticorrosion self-healing waterborne siloxane-type polyurethane composite coating based on modified montmorillonite nanosheets and halloysite nanotubes loaded with 8-hydroxyquinoline

Lei Yonglin,Liu Cheng,Zhu Xuemei,Luo Qian

Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coatings exhibit poor water resistance and are highly permeable to corrosive media. Consequently, they may inevitably sustain damage during prolonged use, which significantly compromises their corrosion resistance. In this study, we synthesized a self-healing waterborne siloxane-modified polyurethane (WPU-Si). To develop a PU composite coating exhibiting both exceptional hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance, modified montmorillonite nanosheets and halloysite nanotubes encapsulated with 8-hydroxyquinoline were prepared. Compared to pristine WPU, WPU-Si demonstrated remarkable mechanical property enhancements, with tensile strength increasing by 293% (from 4.6 MPa to 18.1 MPa) and elongation at break enhancing by 44.5% (from 445% to 643%).The water contact angles increased from 71.04° (WPU) to 82.39° (WPU-Si), indicating enhanced hydrophobicity. All coatings demonstrated complete self-healing (100% recovery efficiency) following 12-h thermal treatment at 50 °C. The MMT-HNT/WPU-Si coating showed outstanding corrosion resistance, with 97.35% protection efficiency, due to the shielding effect of the modified montmorillonite sheets and the smart active protection provided by the release of 8-hydroxyquinoline from halloysite nanotubes. The charge transfer resistance was 3.25 × 10 7 Ω cm 2 after 30-min in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, maintaining 6.92 × 10 5 Ω cm 2 after 30 days. This work provides constructive guidance for creating a low-cost self-healing smart PU composite coating with long-term corrosion resistance.

Facile preparation of biocompatible poly(l-lactic acid)-modified halloysite nanotubes/poly(ε-caprolactone) porous scaffolds by solvent evaporation of Pickering emulsion templates

Hu Yang,Liu Shuifeng,Li Xin,Yuan Teng,Zou Xiuju,He Yinyan,Dong Xianming,Zhou Wuyi,Yang Zhuohong

Biocompatible porous scaffolds with tunable microstructures and drug delivery ability have aroused increasing attention in the application of the biomedical fields, especially in tissue engineering. In this study, we have facilely fabricated the poly( l -lactic acid)-modified halloysite nanotubes (m-HNTs)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) porous scaffolds by direct solvent evaporation of m-HNTs stabilized water in oil Pickering emulsion templates, which contain PCL in the oil phase. The obtained scaffolds have possessed the porous microstructures, which can be easily tailored by varying the preparation conditions of emulsion templates including m-HNTs concentrations and the volume ratios of water to oil. Furthermore, the antibacterial drug enrofloxacin (ENR) has been loaded into the scaffolds, and the in vitro release studies show the potential of m-HNTs/PCL porous scaffolds as drug carriers. And the antimicrobial test results have proved that the ENR-loaded porous scaffolds exhibit obvious and long-term antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli . In addition, mouse bone mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs) are cultured on the m-HNTs/PCL porous scaffolds, and the results of cell counting kit-8 assay and confocal laser scanning microscope observation show that the m-HNTs/PCL porous scaffolds are cytocompatible, because mBMSCs can attach, develop and proliferate well on the porous scaffolds. All the results indicate that the m-HNTs/PCL porous scaffolds hold great potential applications in tissue engineering as scaffolds and/or drug carriers.

Incorporation of Co-Cyromazine Complexes Onto Halloysite Nanotubes as a Spin-Tip Solid-Phase Extraction Sorbent for Determining Hydrophilic B Vitamins in Functional Foods

Jiaheng Yan,Yifan Xu,Yihui Chen,Zhicheng Bai,Jianfeng He,Meikang Lei,Xiaoqiang Qiao,Tingting Wang

Quantifying hydrophilic B vitamins (B1 [(thiamine], B2 [riboflavin], and B3 [nicotinic acid]) in complex functional food matrices presents a significant challenge. Conventional sorbents, such as C18, often exhibit poor retention and low recoveries (50%–60%) due to weak hydrophilic interactions. To efficiently extract these target analytes from functional foods, a new sorbent with tailored hydrophilic affinity has been developed by incorporating Co-cyromazine complexes onto halloysite nanotubes. This composite was employed as the sorbent for a spin-tip solid-phase extraction method, which was coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Following comprehensive optimization and validation, the method demonstrates simplicity, accuracy, sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness. It requires only 10 mg (or 10 µL) of functional food sample, while delivering high recoveries (81.3%–107.8%) with good precision (relative standard deviations ≤10.7%). The limits of detection ranged from 0.4 to 2.5 ng/mL in liquid matrices and from 0.7 to 8.7 ng/g in solid matrices. Practical applicability was confirmed through the successful quantification of vitamins B1, B2, and B3 in various commercial functional foods. Consequently, the developed method provides a reliable and promising analytical tool for the determination of B vitamins, with the potential for extension to other hydrophilic analytes in biological and food matrices.
