Metal oxides are widely used because of their simple structure, low price, and excellent gas-sensitive properties. But now, the metal oxide sensor faces two challenges. One is that when the detection limit of the sensor is low, it will be affected by a high concentration of gas and fail in practical applications. Second, the metal oxide sensor is susceptible to temperature changes, resulting in inaccurate measurement results. To address the above problems, the performance of metal oxides is enhanced through doping. Indium oxide doped with various levels of indium molybdate was prepared using a two-step hydrothermal method resulting in a composite material with an n-n heterostructure. The interaction formed by the n-n heterostructure enhances the redox reaction between NO 2 gas and the sensor, and the unique nano cluster structure provides more active sites for the sensor, significantly improving the gas performance of the sensor towards NO 2 . Sensors based on In 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 with a doping ratio of 4 % (the sample IM3) showed excellent gas sensitivity. The lower and upper detection limits of the sensor are 200 ppb (response is 1.46) and 150 ppm (response is 515.94), respectively. And the sensor has good resistance to ultra-high concentration (10000 ppm) nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) impact. In the range of 130–170°C, the temperature has a small and linear effect on the sensor response, which is very beneficial for temperature correction of gas sensors. The sensor prepared by In 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 doped In 2 O 3 composite material has a good potential for application in engineering practice.

The construction of a novel Au nanoparticles loaded In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 hybrid microflowers composite was conducted through a well-designed hydrothermal and partial oxidation method and used for NO 2 sensing at room-temperature (RT). The characterization data confirmed the hybrid structures and demonstrated that the ratio of adsorbed oxygen species on the surface increased after partial oxidation. The sensing performance of flexible gas sensors based on In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 , In 2 O 3 , Au x In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 (x = 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%) were tested and compared at RT. Heterostructure construction and Au NPs loading significantly improved the sensing properties at RT. Peculiarly, the response value of 1 wt% Au NPs loaded In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 (Au 1 In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 ) sensor for 100 ppm NO 2 at RT was 20.7, which was 9.2 times higher than that of In 2 O 3 sensor. Meanwhile, it also possessed excellent selectivity, fast response/recovery time (12/27 s), good repeatability, long-term and mechanical stability. The outstanding sensing performance for NO 2 at RT mainly associated to the heterojunction between In 2 S 3 and In 2 O 3 and the catalytic effect of Au NPs. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate and analyze the gas adsorption and charger transfer, which related to the enhanced sensing performance.

A novel ternary heterojunction material In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 was synthesized, and a photoelectrochemical sensor was fabricated for the non-invasive test of dopamine (DA) in sweat. In 2 O 3 multihollow microtubules were synthesized and then In 2 S 3 was formed on their surface to construct a type-I heterojunction between In 2 S 3 and In 2 O 3 . ZnIn 2 S 4 was further introduced to form a Z-scheme heterojunction between In 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 . Under photoexcitation, the photogenerated holes of In 2 O 3 transferred to the valence band of In 2 S 3 , superimposed with the holes produced by In 2 S 3 , leads to a significantly higher photocatalytic oxidation capacity of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 ternary composites than that of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 . The Z-scheme heterojunction accelerates the transfer of photogenerated electrons accumulated on the type-I heterojunction. In the presence of DA, it is rapidly oxidized into polydopamine (PDA) by In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 , and the benzoquinone groups of PDA compete for the photogenerated electrons to reduce the current in the external circuit, whereby DA determination is achieved. Owing to the combination of type-I and Z-scheme heterojunction, the sensor showed extremely high sensitivity, with a detection limit of 3.94 × 10 −12 mol/L. It is one of the most sensitive methods for DA detection reported and has been applied to the determination of DA in human sweat. Graphical Abstract

In this paper In 2 O 3 nanoshells have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal approach. The nanoshells can be completely cracked into pony-size nanocubes by annealing, which are then used as a support of Pt catalyst for methanol and ethanol electrocatalytic oxidation . The prepared In 2 O 3 and supported Pt catalysts (Pt/In 2 O 3 ) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field effect scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were carried out, indicating the excellent catalytic performance for alcohol electrooxidation can be achieved on Pt/In 2 O 3 nanocatalysts due to the multiple active sites, high conductivity and a mass of microchannels and micropores for reactant diffusions arising from 3D frame structures compared with that on the Pt/C catalysts.

A highly sensitive and fast responsive semiconductor metal oxide detector based on In 2 O 3 nanoparticle film was developed and evaluated. The mechanical structure of the detector was properly designed to obtain a small chamber volume in order to well fit to a commercial gas chromatographic capillary column. The detector was constructed by coating In 2 O 3 nanoparticle film onto a small ceramic plate. Results indicate that the proposed semiconductor metal oxide detector in this study shows a fast response (several seconds) and a high sensitivity. Moreover, the detector can be operated at ambient condition, which largely simplifies the design of portable gas chromatograph. The fabricated detector was also used to detect gas mixtures with a detection limit down to several ppb. It is concluded that the semiconductor metal oxide detector based on nanostructured materials possesses great potential for constructing portable gas chromatograph.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) to high value-added feedstocks is a sustainable way to address energy and environmental issues. However, there still exists a bottleneck in comprehending the structure–activity relationship of catalysts for ECR. Herein, we demonstrated that the simultaneous tuning of surface-adsorbed hydroxyl group (OHad) coverage and oxygen vacancy (OV) amount on the In2O3 surface was an effective approach to derive an excellent formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) of above 80% at a wide potential range from −1.0 to −1.5 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) with promising durability. Electrochemical experiments and theoretical analyses revealed that the synergistic effect of OHad and OV could smartly optimize the adsorption sites, accelerate the electron transfer, and stabilize *CO2•– and *OCHO intermediates, and thus facilitate ECR activity. This result will contribute to the understanding of the critical role of these surface oxygen species in ECR, which can offer valuable insights into the rational catalyst design for comprehensive utilization of CO2 with high energy efficiency.

Unsaturated alcohols (UOLs) are important fine chemical intermediates. Thus, it is of great significance to design and prepare catalysts for highly selective hydrogenation of CO of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes (UALs). In this paper, a fluffy mesoporous Al2O3-supported Ag–In2O3 catalyst (Ag-In2O3/f-m-Al2O3) was synthesized by employing a two-solvent method, in which Ag and In2O3 form a Mott–Schottky junction and lead to electron transfer from In2O3 to Ag. Electron-rich Ag repels the CC bond owing to “four-electron repulsion”, and electron-deficient In2O3 acts as the electrophilic site to adsorb the O atom of the CO bond, thus improving the selectivity towards UOLs. In addition to a larger specific surface area and smaller mass transfer resistance, the fluffy mesopore Al2O3 exhibits a large number of Lewis acid sites, which can further improve UOL selectivity. With the help of Ag–In2O3/f-m-Al2O3, high UOL selectivity can be obtained from UALs containing aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic groups. This elaborate design of the catalyst could contribute to the highly selective hydrogenation of UALs to UOLs.

Formaldehyde is a ubiquitous indoor pollutant. Developing metal oxide semiconductors gas sensors for selective ppb-level formaldehyde detection is challenging. Therefore, developing gas sensors that can selectively detect indoor formaldehyde at ppb levels is important. In this study, outer-walled thin sheet-like microspheres of Ga-doped In 2 O 3 (Ga x In 2-x O 3 , x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) were fabricated using a facile two-step synthetic method. The Ga 0.3 In 1.7 O 3 based sensor shows the response (556 ± 25) to 100 ppm formaldehyde at 80 °C, which is around 6.5 times that of the pure In 2 O 3 based sensor at 90 °C. Furthermore, it has fast response time (< 3 s), excellent selectivity (S Formaldehyde /S Ethanol = 160, S Formaldehyde /S Acetone = 267), good stability (at least 60 days), and ultra-low limit of detection (10 ppb) for formaldehyde at 80 °C. The improved formaldehyde sensing performance of Ga 0.3 In 1.7 O 3 microspheres is attributed to the optimization of surface chemisorbed oxygen, which is caused by Ga doping regulating the Fermi level of In 2 O 3 as well as an increase in the specific surface area.

The overuse of antibiotics has led to severe environmental pollution, thereby making it increasingly important to efficiently degrade them. To address this, a unique S-scheme heterojunction of the In2S3/In2O3 nanocomposite was successfully constructed using hydrothermal coupled with in situ formation in this work. The optimized In2S3/In2O3 nanocomposite exhibited a significant photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC), achieving an 83% removal rate within 60 min, with enhancements of 1.78 times for In2S3 and 1.66 times for In2O3. Characterization, experimental results, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation collectively prove the efficient transfer of photoexcited carriers between In2O3 and In2S3, coupled with the successful construction of the S-scheme heterojunction with a well-arranged band structure. A potential pathway for developing photocatalysts with exceptional antibiotic removal capabilities has been provided by enhancing their reduction and oxidation capabilities of the S-scheme heterojunction through rational structural configuration.

The supported Ni/In2O3 catalysts are of great interest in CO2 hydrogenation, but the formation of the In0 or Ni–In alloy phases due to over-reduction would lead to rapid catalyst deactivation. Herein, thin Al2O3 films were deposited on the Ni/In2O3 surface by atomic layer deposition (ALD) as an antireduction agent, which enables the In2O3 catalyst to maintain a significant abundance of active In3+ species even during high-temperature H2 treatment (400 °C, 2 h), thereby effectively resisting the deactivation caused by over-reduction of In2O3. Various characterization methods confirm the antiover-reduction effect of ALD-Al2O3 films, namely, inhibiting the formation of In0 and In3Ni2 alloys during high-temperature H2 treatment and facilitating the reoxidation of low-valence In to form the active In2O3–x phase in the presence of a CO2 atmosphere. As treated with H2 at 400 °C, the 5Al2O3/Ni/In2O3-R400 catalyst exhibited an STYMeOH of 7.39 gMeOH h–1gNi–1 and a methanol selectivity of 64% (reaction conditions: 3 MPa, 300 °C, and 12,000 mL gcat–1h–1). Particularly, the STYMeOH increased by 11.5 times as compared with that of the Ni/In2O3-R400 catalyst without coating the ALD-Al2O3 layer (0.59 gMeOH h–1gNi–1). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations validate the effectiveness of specific charge transfer tendencies in suppressing the over-reduction of high-valence In species. Through the analysis of the crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) and projected density of states (PDOS) electronic structures of the adsorbate species, the Al2O3/Ni/In2O3 catalyst is shown to significantly enhance CO2 activation and further catalytic reactions. Accordingly, this study unveils the deactivation mechanism of In2O3-based catalysts due to over-reduction and provides a method to regulate their reduction level by depositing ALD-Al2O3 films on the In2O3-based catalysts.

The progressive transfer of photogenerated electrons between the catalyst components and reactants is of great significance for photocatalysis. Amorphous Pd (Pd A ) and oxygen vacancies (V O s) were simultaneously introduced in Pd-In 2 O 3 exploiting hydrogen-induced amorphization effects; 0.6 wt% Pd-In 2 O 3 exhibited a 4.5-fold increase in activity and a 3.2-fold higher selectivity toward CH 3 OH + CO (63.62 %) compared with In 2 O 3 . Multiple in situ techniques and theoretical calculations revealed that intercomponent electron transfer channels were established via various interface structures formed between Pd A or crystalline Pd (Pd C ) and In 2 O 3 ; Pd A acted as electronic pump, facilitating the transfer and separation of photogenerated electrons, resulting in their subsequent enrichment on the surface of Pd A . Simultaneously, Pd A acted as electron-donating adsorption site for H 2 O, increasing the number of electrons received by H 2 O, further inhibiting the competitive adsorption of H 2 O and CO 2 on V O sites, and promoting the hydrogen evolution reaction. Additionally, the electronic coupling between Pd C and V O s could significantly decrease the electron-donating ability of V O s, reducing the number of electrons received by CO 2 , thus effectively regulating the degree of CO 2 reduction. This study employs Pd A /Pd C and V O s to synergistic optimize the progressive transfer of photogenerated electrons, and presents a novel approach for elucidating the catalytic mechanism.

The persistent challenge of poor recovery characteristics of NO2 sensors operated at room temperature remains significant. However, the development of In2O3-based gas sensing materials provides a promising approach to accelerate response and recovery for sub-ppm of NO2 detection at room temperature. Herein, we propose a simple two-step method to synthesize a one-dimensional (1D) In2O3@ZnO heterostructure material with hollow microtubes, by coupling metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) (MIL-68 (In)) and zinc ions. Meanwhile, the In2O3@ZnO composite-based gas sensor exhibits superior sensitivity performance to NO2 under visible light activation. The response value to 5 ppm of NO2 at room temperature is as high as 1800, which is 35 times higher than that of the pure In2O3-based sensor. Additionally, the gas sensor based on the In2O3@ZnO heterostructure demonstrates a significantly reduced response/recovery time of 30 s/67 s compared to the sensor based on pure In2O3 (74 s/235 s). The outstanding gas sensing properties of the In2O3@ZnO heterostructure-based sensors can be attributed to the enhanced photogenerated charge separation efficiency resulting from the heterostructure effect, and the improved receptor function toward NO2, which can increase the reactive sites and gas adsorption capacity. In summary, this work proposes a low-cost and efficient method to synthesize a 1D heterostructure material with microtube structures, which can serve as a fundamental technique for developing high-performance room-temperature gas sensors.
