Bifunctional flame retardant solid-state electrolyte toward safe Li metal batteries

Qiang Lv,Yajie Song,Bo Wang,Shangjie Wang,Bochen Wu,Yutong Jing,Huaizheng Ren,Shengbo Yang,Lei Wang,Lihui Xiao,Dianlong Wang,Huakun Liu,Shixue Dou

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are one of the most promising alternatives to flammable liquid electrolytes for building safe Li metal batteries. Nevertheless, the poor ionic conductivity at room temperature (RT) and low resistance to Li dendrites seriously hinder the commercialization of SPEs. Herein, we design a bifunctional flame retardant SPE by combining hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanomaterials with N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) in the PVDF-HFP matrix. The addition of HAP generates a hydrogen bond network with the PVDF-HFP matrix and cooperates with NMP to facilitate the dissociation of LiTFSI in the PVDF-HFP matrix. Consequently, the prepared SPE demonstrates superior ionic conductivity at RT, excellent fireproof properties, and strong resistance to Li dendrites. The assembled Li symmetric cell with prepared SPE exhibits a stable cycling performance of over 1200 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 , and the solid-state LiFePO 4 ||Li cell shows excellent capacity retention of 85.3% over 600 cycles at 0.5 C.

Nanofiltration membrane comprising structural regulator Cyclen for efficient Li+/Mg2+ separation

Tingyu Li,Xinzhu Zhang,Yu Zhang,Jixiao Wang,Zhi Wang,Song Zhao

Selective lithium recovery from salt lake brine using emerging nanofiltration membranes is expected to solve the insufficient supply of lithium resources. In this work, 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (Cyclen) was employed as a novel structural regulator through interfacial polymerization of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to develop polyamide NF membrane with efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation performance. After the introduction of Cyclen to aqueous phase , the PEI/Cyclen-TMC selective layer was confirmed to possess a higher crosslinking degree and larger d-spacing than PEI-TMC layer, endowing a dedicated channel for Li + transport. The water permeance of PEI/Cyclen-TMC composite membrane reached 14.0 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , about 3.8 times higher than PEI-TMC composite membrane, and meanwhile the separation factor ( S Li,Mg ) could be stabilized as 8.7 to realize a considerable reduction of Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio from 20 to 2.3. Additionally, PEI/Cyclen-TMC composite membrane was utilized to operate a three-stage nanofiltration treatment procedure of a simulated salt lake brine (Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio: 40). The results indicated that Li + could be efficiently retracted to obtain a solution with 19.5 mg·L −1 Li + and Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio of 0.3. After the subsequent precipitation and filtration, the obtained Li 2 CO 3 purity could reach 93 %, indicating the potential application of nanofiltration for lithium recovery.

Effect of LiBOB content on electrochemical performance of Li–O2 batteries

Mengyuan Song,Changhao Tian,Chunguang Chen,Tao Huang,Aishui Yu

Lithium-oxygen batteries show great energy storage potential due to their high energy density . However, it is difficult for conventional liquid electrolytes to form a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on cathode surface to ensure long-term stable cycling of lithium-oxygen batteries . Herein, LiBOB is added to the LiTFSI-based electrolyte to solve the above-mentioned problems. By introducing LiBOB into LiTFSI single-salt electrolyte system, the electron delocalization of the BOB − anion induces the dissociation equilibrium of the lithium salt to occur positively and the formed electrolyte exhibits good ionic conductivity . Different amounts of LiBOB show different characteristics in electrochemical performance. Trace amounts of LiBOB as an additive increase the solvation of Li + and improve the discharge capacity of the cell. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of the LiTFSI-LiBOB dual-salt electrolyte forms a protective SEI when LiBOB has a larger proportion of lithium salts in the electrolyte, resulting in comparable cycling performance. This work demonstrates a promising approach to design electrolytes for long-term stable cycling of lithium-oxygen batteries.

Crystal structure and microwave dielectric properties of Li-modified BaSi2O5 ceramics

Yun Zhang,Xiaoning Li,Shihua Ding,Tianxiu Song,Zezhen Yin,Jiaying Dan

Ba 1- x Li x Si 2 O 5- x /2 ( x  = 0–0.5) ceramics were prepared by solid-state reaction method. The occupation tendency of Li + was well explained based on First-principle calculation and unit cell volume changes. Li + non-equivalent substitution for Ba 2+ considerably reduced the sintering temperature to 975 °C, in comparison with 1225 °C for pure BaSi 2 O 5 . Single phase solid solution with orthorhombic structure was observed with x  = 0–0.1. Nevertheless, trace amounts of unexpected secondary phases Li 2 Si 2 O 5 and SiO 2 were detected for higher Li-containing samples. Notably, the Q×f significantly enhanced up to 58.16% from 16,134 GHz ( x  = 0) to 25,518 GHz ( x  = 0.01), which predominantly depended on the structural characteristics, such as packing fraction and bond covalence. Increase x from 0 to 0.5 led to the reduction of dielectric constant ε r from 7.11 to 5.95. The resonant frequency temperature coefficient τ f was directly dominated by oxygen bond valence ( V O ), rather than V Ba and V Si . Ba 0.99 Li 0.01 Si 2 O 4.995 ceramic sintered at 1050 °C for 4 h exhibited a high Q×f value of 25,518 GHz, and the ε r and τ f values were 6.94 and −29.46 ppm/°C, respectively.

Lithium Bis(oxalate)borate Reinforces the Interphase on Li-Metal Anodes

Qiankui Zhang,Kang Wang,Xianshu Wang,Yaotang Zhong,Mingzhu Liu,Xiang Liu,Kang Xu,Weizhen Fan,Le Yu,Weishan Li

Li metal provides an ideal anode for the highest energy density batteries, but its reactivity with electrolytes brings poor cycling stability. Electrolyte additives have been employed to effectively improve the cycling stability, often with the underlying mechanism poorly understood. In this work, applying lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) as a chemical source for a dense and protective interphase, we investigate this issue with combined techniques of electrochemical/physical characterizations and theoretical calculations. It was revealed that the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed by Li and the carbonate electrolyte is unstable and responsible for the fast deterioration of the Li anode. When LiBOB is present in the electrolyte, a reinforced SEI was formed, enabling significant improvement in cycling stability due to the preferential reduction of the BOB anion over the carbonate molecules and the strong combination of its reduction products with the species from the electrolyte reduction. The effectiveness of such new SEI chemistry on the Li anode supports excellent performance of a Li/LiFePO4 cell. This approach provides a pathway to rationally design an interphase on the Li anode so that high energy density batteries could be realized.

Jiandong Liu,Jiaojiao Liang,Caiyun Wang,Jianmin Ma

One-dimensional nano-structured materials have attracted attention due to its unique properties afforded such as the across-linked structures and large aspect ratios. In this work, one-dimensional CoSe@N-doped carbon nanofibers (CoSe@NC NFs) are successfully by combining the techniques of electrospinning and annealing. Selenium powder are directly dispersed in the polyacrylonitrile /N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution containing cobalt salt to form the product. The performance of these materials was investigated in Li-ion batteries after the annealing at different temperatures. The CoSe@NC nanofibers annealed at 550 °C (CoSe@NC-550) and displayed excellent storage properties, affording a high capacity of 796 mAh·g −1 at a current density of 1 A·g −1 for 100 cycles. Moreover, it is confirmed that the pseudocapacitive contribution of CoSe@NC-550 is up to 72.8% at the scan rate of 1 mV/s through the cyclic voltammetry analysis.

Polymer electrolyte with composite cathode for solid-state Li–CO2 battery

Mushtaq Muhammad,Guo Xian-Wei,Bi Jie-Peng,Wang Zhao-Xiang,Yu Hai-Jun

The rechargeable Li–CO 2 battery has attracted much attention for energy storage because of the high energy density and efficient utilization of greenhouse gas. However, it’s still suffered by low safety issue of liquid electrolyte. Herein, a composite cathode consisting of CNTs and polymer electrolytes was fabricated by the in-situ polymerization process for the polymer electrolyte-based solid-state Li–CO 2 batteries. With the good dispersion of CNTs and polymer electrolyte, the composite cathode is covered by film-like discharge products Li 2 CO 3 . Furthermore, the Li–CO 2 battery shows high reversible capacity (~ 11,000 mAh·g −1 ), excellent cycle stability (1000 mAh·g −1 for 100 cycles) under low charge potential (< 4.5 V), and outstanding rate performances at room temperature, which are much better than those of liquid electrolyte-based battery. Therefore, the polymer electrolyte-based Li–CO 2 battery prepared by this strategy can be a promising candidate to meet the demands of high safety and high-performance energy storage devices.

Highly Tough, Li-Metal Compatible Organic–Inorganic Double-Network Solvate Ionogel

Le Yu,Songtao Guo,Yue Lu,Yaqian Li,Xiwei Lan,Dabei Wu,Ruguang Li,Siqi Wu,Xianluo Hu

Ionogels are considered promising electrolytes for safe lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their low flammability, good thermal stability, and wide electrochemical stability window. Conventional ionic liquid-based ionogels, however, face two main challenges; poor mechanical property and low Li-ion transfer number. In this work, a novel solvate ionogel electrolyte (SIGE) based on an organic–inorganic double network (DN) is designed and fabricated through nonhydrolytic sol–gel reaction and in situ polymerization processes. The unprecedented SIGE possesses high toughness (bearing the deformation under the pressure of 80 MPa without damage), high Li-ion transfer number of 0.43, and excellent Li-metal compatibility. As expected, the LiFePO 4 /Li cell using the newly developed SIGE delivers a high capacity retention of 95.2% over 500 cycles, and the average Coulombic efficiency is as high as 99.8%. Moreover, the Ni-rich LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811)/Li cell based on the modified SIGE achieves a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.4%, which outperforms previous solid/quasi-solid-state NCM811-based LIBs. Interestingly, the SIGE-based pouch cells are workable under extreme conditions (e.g., severely deforming or clipping into segments). In terms of those unusual features, the as-obtained SIGE holds great promise for next-generation flexible and safe energy-storage devices.

Low-Enthalpy and High-Entropy Polymer Electrolytes for Li-Metal Battery

Haitao Zhang,Yuchen Wang,Junfeng Huang,Wen Li,Xiankan Zeng,Aili Jia,Hongzhi Peng,Xiong Zhang,Weiqing Yang

Ionic-conductive solid-state polymer electrolytes are promising for the development of advanced lithium batteries yet a deeper understanding of their underlying ion-transfer mechanism is needed to improve performance. Here we demonstrate the low-enthalpy and high-entropy (LEHE) electrolytes can intrinsically generate remarkably free ions and high mobility, enabling them to efficiently drive lithium-ion storage. The LEHE electrolytes are constructed on the basis of introducing CsPbI 3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) to strengthen PEO@LiTFSI complexes. An extremely stable cycling >1000 h at 0.3 mA cm −2 can be delivered by LEHE electrolytes. Also, the as-developed Li ¦ LEHE ¦ LiFePO 4 cell retains 92.3% of the initial capacity (160.7 mAh g −1 ) after 200 cycles. This cycling stability is ascribed to the suppressed charge concentration gradient leading to free lithium dendrites. It is realized by a dramatic increment in lithium-ion transference number (0.57 vs 0.19) and a significant decline in ion-transfer activation energy (0.14 eV vs 0.22 eV) for LEHE electrolytes comparing with PEO@LiTFSI counterpart. The CsPbI 3 PQDs promote highly structural disorder by inhibiting crystallization and hence endow polymer electrolytes with low melting enthalpy and high structural entropy, which in turn facilitate long-term cycling stability and excellent rate-capability of lithium-metal batteries.

Stretchable PEDOT:PSS/Li-TFSI/XSB Composite Films for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Xin Jiang,Junwei Zhou,Xinke Zhong,Zhaopeng Hu,Rongyan Hu,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with stretchability are important for developing wearable and flexible appliances. Herein, lithium bis(trifloromethanesulfonyl)imide (Li-TFSI)-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber (XSB) latex are used to prepare stretchable EMI shielding composite films of 0.2 mm in thickness. In these films, the doped PEDOT:PSS nanoparticles form tenuous conductive pathways between the hexagonally packed latex particles, resulting in higher EMI shielding efficiency (EMI SE) compared with the films containing traditional dopant ethylene glycol. For the purpose of stretchable EMI shielding, the films containing 6 wt % PEDOT:PSS and 6 wt % Li-TFSI demonstrate EMI SE of 50 and 30 dB (12.4 GHz) at 0 and 100% strains, respectively, being the highest values among the reported shielding composites except for those using liquid metal as the filler. The investigation also provides a simple and environmentally friendly preparation method being highlighted for the development of lightweight stretchable EMI shielding materials for applications in flexible electronics in the near future.

Anionic metal-organic framework modified separator boosting efficient Li-ion transport

Jiaqi Li,Long Chen,Fengling Wang,Zuoyu Qin,Ying Zhang,Ning Zhang,Xiaohe Liu,Gen Chen

Low lithium ion (Li + ) mobility and thermal stability of polyolefin separator are crucial obstacles that limit the utilization of Li metal electrodes in the age of rapid acceleration toward high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. Herein, we report anionic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) modified separator to overcome the barriers. By grafting –SO 3 − group onto the Universitetet i Oslo (UIO) structure, the anionic MOFs nanoparticles are synthesized (noted as UIO-SOLi). The UIO-SOLi is adhered on the surface of Celgard 2400 via polyacrylic acid (PAA) to fabricate the modified separator (UIOSOL@PP). The MOFs coating optimizes the wettability and thermal stability of the pristine separator. Negatively charged moieties –SO 3 − within the pore surface electrostatically repel anions while facilitate the transport of Li + , thus achieving a high Li + transference number ( t Li + ) of 0.82. The effective Li + transport relieves the concentration polarization, regulates the Li + flow and realizes the uniform deposition of lithium. By implementing the UIOSOL@PP separator, the LiFePO 4 |Li cells deliver superior rate performance and cycling lifespan that renders a high discharge capacity retention of 155 mAh g −1 over 600 cycles at 1C. These results indicate that anionic MOFs modified separator is a promising strategy to modulate Li + flow and assist with efficient long-term operation of lithium metal batteries.

Advanced Li–S Batteries Enabled by a Biomimetic Polysulfide-Engulfing Net

Tao Feng,Teng Zhao,Shuangfei Zhu,Ziheng Wang,Lei Wei,Nanxiang Zhang,Tinglu Song,Li Li,Feng Wu,Renjie Chen

Lithium–sulfur batteries are attractive because of their high specific capacity and energy density, but issues with the polysulfide dissolution and shuttling intrinsically hinder their wide application. Here, hydroxylate multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-OH) were grafted with a supramolecular polymer (heptakis(6-amino-6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin) to form a polysulfide-engulfing net, which was coated on a separator. Such a molecular microarray structure of a polymer can block the polysulfides and have biomimetic cellular behavior for engulfing polysulfides. The cavity (∼6 Å) and functional groups of the supramolecular polymer can provide a dynamic structure for reversible adsorption of polysulfides while the conductive MWCNT-OH ensure fast electron transfer. The batteries with the modified separator exhibited excellent rate capacities (945.5 and 625.4 mA h g–1 at 2 C and 4 C rates, respectively). Especially, the high areal capacities of 5.86 and 7.2 mA h cm–2 achieved at S loadings of 4.5 and 6.0 mg cm–2 and good cycling stability after 200 cycles at 0.1 C can be obtained. This demonstrates a strategy of supramolecular polymer-grafted carbon for dynamic polysulfide adsorption toward advanced Li–S batteries.
