Duplex Layers of Titanium Dioxide Compared to Stearic Acid on Organo-phosphonic Film on Biodegradable Mg

Soliman Hanaa,Taieh Nabil Kadhim,Wan Guojiang,Hussien Hoda M.

Biodegradable magnesium is a promising orthopedic implant, but one challenge is reducing its corrosion rate. The first question that jumps to the reader’s mind is choosing an organic film or an inorganic one to isolate Mg. Here, a duplex-layer strategy has been studied: an organic film of hexamethylenediaminetetrakis (methylenephosphonic acid) HMDTMPA and two top layers of an inorganic film of TiO 2 or another organic film of stearic (St). A comparison will be carried out in light of SEM, AFM, EDS, XRD, XPS, FTIR, and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. Double layers of the organic film created more thickness (6.8 μm) but otherwise almost the same efficiency as a single film (4.3 μm), due to the same bonding ability of O-H and C-C, shifting the coating toward hydrophilicity attitude (57°). On the other hand, inorganic TiO 2 generates finer particles that are arranged compactly, facilitating denser packing (7.2 μm), reducing voidages on the surface and promoting hydrophobicity (146°) and consequently reinforcing Mg insulation. Bifunctional Group Synergy in PEI-TMC NF Membrane for Balanced High Permeability and Mg/Li Separation

Ying Cheng,Yanxia Sun,Shengde Dong,Luxiang Ma,Xin He,Qi Xu,Ziyu Wang,Yu Tang,Ping Li,Chunxi Hai,Yuan Zhou

The nanofiltration (NF) membrane, as an emerging lithium resource extraction technology, precisely screens Mg2+ and Li+ through the Donnan effect and steric hindrance. However, most NF membranes still struggle to break through the “trade-off effect”, and how to effectively overcome this effect to achieve a balance between high ion rejection and high permeability remains a great challenge. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) was added to the aqueous phase during the preparation of polyethylenimine-trimesoyl chloride (PEI-TMC) NF membranes. The bifunctional groups of SA can achieve synergistic effects: −COOH can produce electrostatic interaction with PEI to reduce amine sites, while −OH can form a competitive relationship with PEI to reduce the reactivity of amine groups, thereby forming a loose and thin separation layer. The permeability was significantly improved, and its water flux increased from 34.68 L·m–2·h–1 to 92.04 L·m–2·h–1, representing a nearly 3-fold increase compared to the PEI-TMC NF membrane. At the same time, the reduction of amine groups participating in the reaction under the optimal conditions increases the positive charge on the membrane surface, maintaining the original high separation performance SLi+/Mg2+=21.18). Through a three-stage nanofiltration process, the Li+/Mg2+ ratio in real salt-lake brine can be reduced to 0.86, and the improved adsorption-membrane coupled process can further reduce the Li+/Mg2+ ratio to 0.04, significantly reducing the interference of high-concentration Mg2+ in the lithium extraction process. Finally, this study systematically compared the cost and environmental impact of the modifier used in this work with those of other common modifiers. The results show that the proposed modifier is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, with higher feasibility for practical industrial applications. Therefore, this work exhibits promising application prospects in the field of lithium extraction from salt lakes.

Corrosion failure behavior of Mg-2Zn-0.1Ca alloy in simulated physiological environment: influence of rolling temperature

Zhang Kaifei,Sun Youping,Li Wangzhen,He Jiangmei,Chen Wengang,He Chengwei

This study comprehensively investigated the influence of varied hot rolling temperatures on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior of Mg-2Zn-0.1Ca alloy in a simulated physiological environment. Advanced characterization techniques, including Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), were employed for detailed microstructural analysis. Corrosion performance was systematically evaluated through mass loss, hydrogen evolution, and electrochemical polarization tests. Results indicate that increasing rolling temperature progressively enlarged the alloy’s grain size, peaking at 15.06 μm at 400 ℃. Concurrently, the degree of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and the fraction of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) exhibited a synchronized increase. Notably, the alloy rolled at 300 ℃ displayed the highest dislocation density, attributed to a significantly higher rate of dislocation multiplication than annihilation. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) generally decreased with rising rolling temperature, with the 250 ℃ rolled specimen achieving the maximum UTS of 218.34 MPa. Conversely, the 300 ℃ rolled alloy exhibited superior elongation (EL) of 19.8%. The damping performance at room temperature exhibits a monotonically increasing trend with rising rolling temperature, with the alloy achieving optimal damping properties at 400 ℃. Regarding corrosion performance, at the 400 ℃ rolling process, the alloy’s corrosion rate is minimized. This superior performance is primarily attributed to its lower grain boundary density, more homogeneous microstructure, and the formation of a dense passive film on the surface, which synergistically impede further corrosive medium penetration.

Controlled Synthesis of Mg Al-Layered Double Hydroxide as a High-Performance Additive of Bentonite Grease

Liyuan Wang,Bingbing Lai,Xiaoyu Wang,Bo Dai,Yujuan Zhang,Wenjing Lou

Traditional bentonite grease suffers from inadequate tribological properties. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have great potential as lubricant additives owing to their unique lamellar structure, tunable chemical composition, and high anion-exchange capacity, which enable strong interfacial interactions and stable dispersion in lubricating media. In this study, Mg Al-layered double hydroxide (MA-LDH) was synthesized as a crystalline lamellar compound with a controllable morphology and particle size. MA-LDH was prepared under hydrothermal conditions at pH 8–12 and 120–180 °C. The effects of MA-LDH synthesis conditions and additive concentration on the properties of bentonite grease were systematically investigated. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the particle size distribution of MA-LDH became increasingly nonuniform as the pH and hydrothermal temperature increased. MA-LDH synthesized at pH 10 and 120 °C exhibited excellent particle size uniformity and dispersibility. Within the investigated additive range (0.1–12 wt %), an MA-LDH concentration of 1.5 wt % produced the best tribological performance. Compared with the base bentonite grease, the grease containing 1.5 wt % MA-LDH showed a 34.2% reduction in average coefficient of friction, an 89.2% decrease in wear volume, and a 150% increase in load-carrying capacity. The incorporation of MA-LDH optimizes load distribution, facilitates interfacial sliding, and enhances the film-forming ability, thereby improving the tribological performance of the bentonite grease.

SnO2/Mg-Doped SnO2 bilayer ETL layer for improving interfacial performance in CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells

Qixin Chen,Zhongchen Bai,Xu Wang,Xinghua Li,Min Feng,Zhengping Zhang

An ultrathin Mg-doped SnO 2 layer reconstructs the ETL surface. • SnO 2 /Mg-doped SnO 2 bilayer regulates the ETL/CsPbBr 3 interface. • Improved morphology and charge transport enhance device performance. • The optimized device achieves 8.74% PCE and 90.69% retention after 50 days. Incomplete surface coverage, localized exposure of ITO protrusions, and interfacial nonuniformity in solution-processed SnO 2 electron transport layers (ETLs) restrict the performance of hole-transport-layer-free (HTL-free) CsPbBr 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a planar homojunction SnO 2 /Mg-doped SnO 2 bilayer ETL was fabricated by depositing an ultrathin Mg-doped SnO 2 layer on the SnO 2 surface to regulate the ETL/perovskite interface in an ITO/SnO 2 /CsPbBr 3 /carbon device architecture. This bilayer configuration improves surface coverage, interfacial contact, and energy-level alignment while preserving lattice compatibility within the SnO 2 -based system. The Mg-doped SnO 2 top layer reduces surface cracks and pits, limits local ITO exposure, decreases roughness, and improves precursor wettability. These changes promote the formation of CsPbBr 3 films with larger grains, fewer pinholes, better vertical morphology, higher crystallinity, and a near-stoichiometric composition. The PL, TRPL, EIS, dark J–V, XPS, and UPS results collectively indicate improved interfacial charge extraction, reduced defect-assisted non-radiative recombination, and more improved energy-level alignment at the ETL/perovskite interface. Consequently, the optimized HTL-free device achieved a champion PCE of 8.74% with a Voc of 1.520 V and retained 90.69% of its initial efficiency after 50 days of unencapsulated storage in air. This work indicates that introducing an ultrathin Mg-doped SnO 2 overlayer effectively reconstructs the ETL surface and regulates the ETL/perovskite interface, providing an effective interfacial regulation strategy for developing efficient and stable HTL-free all-inorganic PSCs.

Chang Feng,Qian Jing,Li Tang,Jiangping Jing,Ruiling Wang,Zhuoyuan Chen

S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized via a simple ball-milling method. • S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. • S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 demonstrated stable photocatalytic activity in complex ionic environments. • The photocatalytic reaction mechanism of S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 was proposed in this work. This work fabricated a type II 2D/2D S-doped graphitic carbon nitride/magnesium hydroxide (S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 ) heterojunction photocatalyst via a straightforward ball-milling method. The Mg(OH) 2 nanosheets are uniformly dispersed on the surface of S-C 3 N 4 , forming a well-developed heterojunction structure. The S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 composite material was employed as a photocatalyst and exhibited high efficiency in degrading tetracycline and methyl orange in an aqueous environment. The optimized S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 -30 composite demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance, achieving 100% removal of tetracycline within 45 min and 93% degradation of methyl orange within 60 min. Its performance was significantly superior to that of the single-component photocatalysts, and it exhibited stable photocatalytic activity even in complex ionic environments. The formation of Type-II heterojunction between S-C 3 N 4 and Mg(OH) 2 facilitates charge separation/migration and thus significantly enhanced pollutant removal efficiency. The S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 composite material fabricated in this work shows great promise for practical wastewater treatment applications. The S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated. It not only exhibits outstanding photocatalytic performance in degrading organic pollutants but also maintains stable photocatalytic degradation ability even under complex ionic conditions. Low-cost mesoporous SiO2 enables enhanced combustion and energy release in Al-Mg/AP energetic composites

Sen Liu,Mi Li,Zhanjun Yang,Matko Erceg,Lin Jiang

Inert silica is repurposed as a potent modifier for Al-Mg/AP energetic composites. • 5 wt% SiO 2 reduces ignition delay by 35% and increases maximum flame area by 226%. • Optimal SiO 2 loading boosts pressurization rate by 126% in closed vessel tests. • 9 wt% SiO 2 reduces AP decomposition activation energy by 78 kJ/mol. Silica (SiO 2 ) is generally regarded as a chemically inert and low-cost material that is widely present in natural minerals and daily life. In conventional energetic formulations, SiO 2 is rarely considered an active component because of its high thermodynamic stability and low thermal conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate that mesoporous SiO 2 can serve as an effective reactive additive in Al-Mg/ammonium perchlorate (AP) energetic composites, participating in high-temperature aluminothermic reactions and regulating the overall energy-release behavior of the system. In this work, AP/SiO 2 precursor particles were prepared by spray drying, followed by solvent-assisted assembly with Al Mg alloy powder to obtain Al-Mg/(AP/SiO 2 ) composite energetic materials with different SiO 2 contents. The morphology, phase structure, combustion behavior, pressure output, thermal decomposition characteristics, evolved gaseous products, and post-combustion residues were systematically investigated using SEM, EDS, XRD, high-speed imaging, infrared thermography, closed-bomb pressure testing, TG-DSC, and TG-IR analyses. The results reveal that the introduction of mesoporous SiO 2 markedly alters the decomposition behavior of AP, promotes gas evolution, enhances ignition and combustion propagation, and modifies the condensed-phase reaction pathway of the Al-Mg/AP system. These effects are attributed to the combined roles of mesoporous confinement, surface silanol-assisted AP decomposition, local hotspot formation, and the participation of SiO 2 in aluminothermic reactions. This study provides new insight into the unconventional role of inert oxides in energetic combustion systems and offers a low-cost strategy for designing alternative multifunctional reactive additives and regulating energy-release mechanisms in metal-based energetic materials. Metabolic–reprogrammed MnO₂–Mg/Pt@BBF nanozyme disrupts biofilm cohesion for enhanced chemodynamic therapy of periodontitis

Meng Bo,Jiao Fang,Yuning Wu,Zixuan Chen,Yingchi Liu,Shuang Liu,Chunyan Li,Lin Wang,Xiaolin Sun

A metabolically reprogrammed MnO₂-Mg/Pt@BBF nanozyme is developed for periodontitis treatment. • Mg²⁺ amplifies endogenous H₂O₂ production via SpxB in Streptococcus gordonii. • Pt decoration enriches catalytically active Mn²⁺ to enhance chemodynamic therapy. • Covalently immobilized BBF inhibits LuxS/AI-2 quorum sensing and disrupts biofilm cohesion. • The nanozyme reduces bacterial burden, alveolar bone loss, and inflammation in vivo . Objectives To overcome the intrinsic incompatibility between dense periodontal biofilms and chemodynamic therapy (CDT), we developed a vacancy–engineered MnO₂ nanozyme that integrates redox–state programming, Mg²⁺–enabled endogenous H₂O₂ amplification, and covalently immobilized quorum–sensing inhibition for the local treatment of periodontitis. Methods Mg²⁺–coordinated MnO₂ nanoflowers were decorated with Pt nanoparticles and covalently functionalized with BBF. Physicochemical properties, Mn valence states, H₂O₂ and ·OH generation, LuxS/AI–2 signaling, Porphyromonas gingivalis metabolomic changes, antibiofilm activity, and therapeutic efficacy in rat periodontitis were evaluated. Results Pt decoration increased the Mn²⁺ fraction from 33% to 51%, while Mg²⁺ enhanced SpxB–mediated H₂O₂ production by Streptococcus gordonii . Immobilized BBF reduced AI–2 activity from 67.8% to 22.8% and downregulated luxS, fimA, mfa1, kgp, and rgpA . In dual–species biofilms, MnO₂–Mg/Pt@BBF yielded 68.7% dead cells, an approximately 4–log₁₀ reduction in viable bacteria, and the lowest residual thickness. Metabolomics revealed depletion of G6P, R5P, NADPH, ATP, and α–ketoglutarate in P. gingivalis. In vivo , treatment reduced periodontal bacterial burden by approximately 3 orders of magnitude and decreased the CEJ–ABC distance from 1.44 ± 0.28 mm to 0.56 ± 0.15 mm, accompanied by reduced inflammation and IL-6 expression, improved collagen organization, and elevated Arg-1 levels. Significance This locally deliverable platform couples vacancy/valence–tuned catalysis, Mg²⁺–primed endogenous oxidant supply, and surface–immobilized quorum–sensing blockade, offering a composition–guided strategy for controlling polymicrobial periodontal biofilms and limiting infection–associated tissue destruction.

Enhancing Thermal-Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 via H2O-H2 Co-Feeding in Mg-Doped Bismuth Catalysts

Haonan Li,Weimin Ma,Pei Kang,Yingxuan Li

The rational design of efficient thermal-photo CO 2 reduction catalysts necessitates synergistic integration of structural modulation and reactant activation strategies. Herein, a Mg-doped Bi nanosphere catalyst is reported, engineered for efficient CO 2 reduction under H 2 O-H 2 co-feeding conditions. Mg doping not only optimizes the nanostructure by reducing the particle size but also modifies the surface charge distribution and enhances water adsorption, thereby promoting CO 2 activation and catalytic performance. Crucially, under H 2 O  H 2 co-feeding, H 2 O interacts with Bi to generate hydroxylated Bi  OH sites that promote CO 2 chemisorption, while H 2 supplies hydrogen species (*H) for CO 2 reduction. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy reveals a cooperative mechanism: CO 2 adsorbs on Bi  OH to form *CO 3 2− intermediates, which undergo sequential reduction facilitated by H 2 activation. This synergy achieves a CO production rate of 55.32 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 under 420 nm illumination with 100% selectivity, which is 2.4 times higher than that under a pure H 2 atmosphere. The work highlights the critical role of dopant-driven active site engineering and reactant synergies (H 2 O  H 2 ) in CO 2 valorization, providing a scalable strategy for catalytic performance enhancement.

TBP-MNPK combinations: a promising approach for selective Lithium extraction from high Mg/Li ratio liquids

Fan Li,Xiumin Yang,Zaolong Zhang,He Xiao,Junlian Wang

To address the third-phase formation and high-acidity stripping corrosion of the traditional TBP-FeCl₃ system for Li extraction from high Mg/Li ratio salt-lake brines, this study developed a TBP-MNPK-kerosene-FeCl₃ system using 2-heptanone (MNPK) as a modifier. MNPK eliminated third-phase formation and enabled complete phase separation within 50s. Under optimal conditions (20  vol % kerosene, 40  vol % TBP), Li extraction efficiency reached 85.4 % with a Li/Mg separation factor of 315. After water scrubbing and 3 mol/L HCl stripping, the stripping solution had 5.46 g/L Li (3.12-fold enrichment) and Li/Mg ratio of 11.38. This system provides an efficient, industrial-feasible Li extraction solution.

Synthesis and controlled release properties of β-naphthoxyacetic acid intercalated Mg–Al layered double hydroxides nanohybrids

Shifeng Li,Yanming Shen,Min Xiao,Dongbin Liu,Lihui Fan

Controlled release formulations have been proven to have potential in overcoming the drawbacks of conventional plant growth regulators. Novel controlled-release formulation of β -naphthoxyacetic acid (BNOA) intercalated MgAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was prepared by co-precipitation method. The effects of temperature, pH value, and release medium on BNOA release were studied and the releasing mechanisms were discussed. The results of release show that the increase of temperature induces the increase of BNOA release extent. The release rate and accumulated release amount of BNOA are found to be dependent to the anion in the aqueous solution in the order of CO 3 2−   >   SO 4 2−   >   Cl − . Moreover, the pH is the key controlling factor for the BNOA release processes, and with strong acid medium, the release character of BNOA is different from those at pH 7 and 12, which accompanies with fast collapse of LDHs nanolayered structure. The nanohybrid of BNOA intercalated LDHs possessed good controlled release properties and the BNOA release character from the nanohybrid fitted pseudo-second-order model in neutral medium.

Corrosion and tribocorrosion protection of AZ31B Mg alloy by a hydrothermally treated PEO/chitosan composite coating

Luyao Xu,Xiaojing Fu,Huijuan Su,Huilai Sun,Ruichuan Li,Yong Wan

This study is aimed at the enhancement of the corrosion and tribocorrosion performance of AZ31B magnesium (Mg) alloys after plasma electrolytic oxidization (PEO) treatment. Some PEO-treated Mg samples were coated with chitosan (CS) film by dip-coated method, while others were subjected to hydrothermal treatment (HT) followed by CS film. The microstructure and chemical composition of coatings were investigated via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . Corrosion resistance of the specimens was evaluated via electrochemical measurements (open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) in simulated body fluid. The tribocorrosion performance was determined by simultaneously recording the variation of the friction coefficient and the open circuit potential with the sliding time. The results indicated that better corrosion and tribocorrosion performance were observed when CS layer is applied on hydrothermally treated PEO samples than on the bare PEO samples. Thus, fabrication of hydrothermally treated PEO surface coatings with chitosan is a significant approach to protect the Mg from corrosion and tribocorrosion, thereby increasing the potential application of Mg alloy as biological implants .
