Metal–nitrogen–carbon catalysts have emerged as promising alternatives to costly platinum group catalysts in fuel cells and metal–air batteries; however, further enhancement of their activity in both alkaline and acidic media is still required. Here, we present a FeMg–N–C dual-atom catalyst that demonstrates excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance, achieving notably high half-wave potentials (E 1/2 ) of 1.004 V in alkaline media and 0.881 V in acidic media. Additionally, the FeMg–N–C catalyst delivers peak power densities of 530.1 mW cm −2 in Zn–air cells and 1.06 W cm −2 in H 2 –O 2 fuel cells. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the enhanced ORR activity arises from the spin state transition of Fe sites from low spin to medium spin, induced by adjacent Mg sites. This medium-spin Fe site exhibits strong adsorption of *O 2 and weak adsorption of *OH, effectively facilitating the initial ORR step and the removal of *OH. This work paves a novel pathway to design and construct well-performing electrocatalysts via the spin regulation strategy.

An ultrathin Mg-doped SnO 2 layer reconstructs the ETL surface. • SnO 2 /Mg-doped SnO 2 bilayer regulates the ETL/CsPbBr 3 interface. • Improved morphology and charge transport enhance device performance. • The optimized device achieves 8.74% PCE and 90.69% retention after 50 days. Incomplete surface coverage, localized exposure of ITO protrusions, and interfacial nonuniformity in solution-processed SnO 2 electron transport layers (ETLs) restrict the performance of hole-transport-layer-free (HTL-free) CsPbBr 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a planar homojunction SnO 2 /Mg-doped SnO 2 bilayer ETL was fabricated by depositing an ultrathin Mg-doped SnO 2 layer on the SnO 2 surface to regulate the ETL/perovskite interface in an ITO/SnO 2 /CsPbBr 3 /carbon device architecture. This bilayer configuration improves surface coverage, interfacial contact, and energy-level alignment while preserving lattice compatibility within the SnO 2 -based system. The Mg-doped SnO 2 top layer reduces surface cracks and pits, limits local ITO exposure, decreases roughness, and improves precursor wettability. These changes promote the formation of CsPbBr 3 films with larger grains, fewer pinholes, better vertical morphology, higher crystallinity, and a near-stoichiometric composition. The PL, TRPL, EIS, dark J–V, XPS, and UPS results collectively indicate improved interfacial charge extraction, reduced defect-assisted non-radiative recombination, and more improved energy-level alignment at the ETL/perovskite interface. Consequently, the optimized HTL-free device achieved a champion PCE of 8.74% with a Voc of 1.520 V and retained 90.69% of its initial efficiency after 50 days of unencapsulated storage in air. This work indicates that introducing an ultrathin Mg-doped SnO 2 overlayer effectively reconstructs the ETL surface and regulates the ETL/perovskite interface, providing an effective interfacial regulation strategy for developing efficient and stable HTL-free all-inorganic PSCs.

S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized via a simple ball-milling method. • S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. • S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 demonstrated stable photocatalytic activity in complex ionic environments. • The photocatalytic reaction mechanism of S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 was proposed in this work. This work fabricated a type II 2D/2D S-doped graphitic carbon nitride/magnesium hydroxide (S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 ) heterojunction photocatalyst via a straightforward ball-milling method. The Mg(OH) 2 nanosheets are uniformly dispersed on the surface of S-C 3 N 4 , forming a well-developed heterojunction structure. The S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 composite material was employed as a photocatalyst and exhibited high efficiency in degrading tetracycline and methyl orange in an aqueous environment. The optimized S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 -30 composite demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance, achieving 100% removal of tetracycline within 45 min and 93% degradation of methyl orange within 60 min. Its performance was significantly superior to that of the single-component photocatalysts, and it exhibited stable photocatalytic activity even in complex ionic environments. The formation of Type-II heterojunction between S-C 3 N 4 and Mg(OH) 2 facilitates charge separation/migration and thus significantly enhanced pollutant removal efficiency. The S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 composite material fabricated in this work shows great promise for practical wastewater treatment applications. The S-C 3 N 4 /Mg(OH) 2 heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated. It not only exhibits outstanding photocatalytic performance in degrading organic pollutants but also maintains stable photocatalytic degradation ability even under complex ionic conditions. Inert silica is repurposed as a potent modifier for Al-Mg/AP energetic composites. • 5 wt% SiO 2 reduces ignition delay by 35% and increases maximum flame area by 226%. • Optimal SiO 2 loading boosts pressurization rate by 126% in closed vessel tests. • 9 wt% SiO 2 reduces AP decomposition activation energy by 78 kJ/mol. Silica (SiO 2 ) is generally regarded as a chemically inert and low-cost material that is widely present in natural minerals and daily life. In conventional energetic formulations, SiO 2 is rarely considered an active component because of its high thermodynamic stability and low thermal conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate that mesoporous SiO 2 can serve as an effective reactive additive in Al-Mg/ammonium perchlorate (AP) energetic composites, participating in high-temperature aluminothermic reactions and regulating the overall energy-release behavior of the system. In this work, AP/SiO 2 precursor particles were prepared by spray drying, followed by solvent-assisted assembly with Al Mg alloy powder to obtain Al-Mg/(AP/SiO 2 ) composite energetic materials with different SiO 2 contents. The morphology, phase structure, combustion behavior, pressure output, thermal decomposition characteristics, evolved gaseous products, and post-combustion residues were systematically investigated using SEM, EDS, XRD, high-speed imaging, infrared thermography, closed-bomb pressure testing, TG-DSC, and TG-IR analyses. The results reveal that the introduction of mesoporous SiO 2 markedly alters the decomposition behavior of AP, promotes gas evolution, enhances ignition and combustion propagation, and modifies the condensed-phase reaction pathway of the Al-Mg/AP system. These effects are attributed to the combined roles of mesoporous confinement, surface silanol-assisted AP decomposition, local hotspot formation, and the participation of SiO 2 in aluminothermic reactions. This study provides new insight into the unconventional role of inert oxides in energetic combustion systems and offers a low-cost strategy for designing alternative multifunctional reactive additives and regulating energy-release mechanisms in metal-based energetic materials. A metabolically reprogrammed MnO₂-Mg/Pt@BBF nanozyme is developed for periodontitis treatment. • Mg²⁺ amplifies endogenous H₂O₂ production via SpxB in Streptococcus gordonii. • Pt decoration enriches catalytically active Mn²⁺ to enhance chemodynamic therapy. • Covalently immobilized BBF inhibits LuxS/AI-2 quorum sensing and disrupts biofilm cohesion. • The nanozyme reduces bacterial burden, alveolar bone loss, and inflammation in vivo . Objectives To overcome the intrinsic incompatibility between dense periodontal biofilms and chemodynamic therapy (CDT), we developed a vacancy–engineered MnO₂ nanozyme that integrates redox–state programming, Mg²⁺–enabled endogenous H₂O₂ amplification, and covalently immobilized quorum–sensing inhibition for the local treatment of periodontitis. Methods Mg²⁺–coordinated MnO₂ nanoflowers were decorated with Pt nanoparticles and covalently functionalized with BBF. Physicochemical properties, Mn valence states, H₂O₂ and ·OH generation, LuxS/AI–2 signaling, Porphyromonas gingivalis metabolomic changes, antibiofilm activity, and therapeutic efficacy in rat periodontitis were evaluated. Results Pt decoration increased the Mn²⁺ fraction from 33% to 51%, while Mg²⁺ enhanced SpxB–mediated H₂O₂ production by Streptococcus gordonii . Immobilized BBF reduced AI–2 activity from 67.8% to 22.8% and downregulated luxS, fimA, mfa1, kgp, and rgpA . In dual–species biofilms, MnO₂–Mg/Pt@BBF yielded 68.7% dead cells, an approximately 4–log₁₀ reduction in viable bacteria, and the lowest residual thickness. Metabolomics revealed depletion of G6P, R5P, NADPH, ATP, and α–ketoglutarate in P. gingivalis. In vivo , treatment reduced periodontal bacterial burden by approximately 3 orders of magnitude and decreased the CEJ–ABC distance from 1.44 ± 0.28 mm to 0.56 ± 0.15 mm, accompanied by reduced inflammation and IL-6 expression, improved collagen organization, and elevated Arg-1 levels. Significance This locally deliverable platform couples vacancy/valence–tuned catalysis, Mg²⁺–primed endogenous oxidant supply, and surface–immobilized quorum–sensing blockade, offering a composition–guided strategy for controlling polymicrobial periodontal biofilms and limiting infection–associated tissue destruction.

Ischemic stroke remains a leading global cause of mortality and disability, creating an urgent need for improved treatments. Biodegradable magnesium (Mg) alloy stents represent a promising advancement for cerebrovascular applications due to their inherent biocompatibility, mechanical suitability, and unique neuroprotective properties conferred by Mg ions. However, the clinical translation of Mg alloy stents, particularly for sensitive cerebral vasculature, is hindered by two major bottlenecks: uncontrolled rapid degradation leading to premature structural failure and delayed endothelialization contributing to restenosis and thrombosis. Addressing the critical issue of biological functionality, this study develops a novel sulfonated hyaluronic acid-tyrosine microsphere (S-HA-Tyr@microsphere) coating on ZE21B Mg alloy. Monodisperse S-HA-Tyr microspheres were precisely fabricated using microfluidics and stabilized via a visible-light catalyzed tris(2,2-bipyridyl)-dichlororuthenium(II)/Sodium persulfate (Ru/SPS) system, forming a robust dityrosine bond network. This multifunctional coating integrates corrosion resistance (primarily achieved through an established MgF 2 interlayer), strong anchoring (PDA layer), and enhanced bioactivity (S-HA-Tyr@microspheres). The S-HA-Tyr@microsphere coating significantly improved hemocompatibility, reducing hemolysis to 0.35% ( p < 0.01) and platelet adhesion by 83.7% ( p < 0.001). Crucially, it promoted endothelial cells (ECs) migration and proliferation ( p < 0.01) while inhibiting smooth muscle cells (SMCs) overgrowth ( p < 0.05) and inducing macrophage M2 polarization ( p < 0.01), demonstrating excellent cell-specific regulation. In vivo evaluation confirmed the efficacy: abdominal aortic implantation in rats for 28 d revealed a superior diameter retention for the coated implants compared to bare alloy ( p < 0.05) and showed continuous endothelium with reduced neointimal formation ( p < 0.01). This innovative coating strategy facilitates both degradation control and accelerated endothelialization, overcoming key biological barriers for the clinical application of biodegradable Mg alloy cerebrovascular stents.

The nanofiltration (NF) membrane, as an emerging lithium resource extraction technology, precisely screens Mg2+ and Li+ through the Donnan effect and steric hindrance. However, most NF membranes still struggle to break through the “trade-off effect”, and how to effectively overcome this effect to achieve a balance between high ion rejection and high permeability remains a great challenge. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) was added to the aqueous phase during the preparation of polyethylenimine-trimesoyl chloride (PEI-TMC) NF membranes. The bifunctional groups of SA can achieve synergistic effects: −COOH can produce electrostatic interaction with PEI to reduce amine sites, while −OH can form a competitive relationship with PEI to reduce the reactivity of amine groups, thereby forming a loose and thin separation layer. The permeability was significantly improved, and its water flux increased from 34.68 L·m–2·h–1 to 92.04 L·m–2·h–1, representing a nearly 3-fold increase compared to the PEI-TMC NF membrane. At the same time, the reduction of amine groups participating in the reaction under the optimal conditions increases the positive charge on the membrane surface, maintaining the original high separation performance SLi+/Mg2+=21.18). Through a three-stage nanofiltration process, the Li+/Mg2+ ratio in real salt-lake brine can be reduced to 0.86, and the improved adsorption-membrane coupled process can further reduce the Li+/Mg2+ ratio to 0.04, significantly reducing the interference of high-concentration Mg2+ in the lithium extraction process. Finally, this study systematically compared the cost and environmental impact of the modifier used in this work with those of other common modifiers. The results show that the proposed modifier is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, with higher feasibility for practical industrial applications. Therefore, this work exhibits promising application prospects in the field of lithium extraction from salt lakes.

NiAl-layered double hydroxide (NiAl-LDH) coatings grown in-situ on AZ31 Mg alloy were prepared for the first time utilizing a facile hydrothermal method. The surface morphologies, structures, and compositions of the NiAl-LDH coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), three dimensional (3D) optical profilometer, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that NiAl-LDH coating could be successfully deposited on Mg alloy substrate using different nickel salts, i.e., carbonate, nitrate, and sulfate salts. Different coatings exhibit different surface morphologies, but all of which exhibit remarkable enhancement in corrosion protection in 3.5 wt % NaCl corrosive electrolyte. When nickel nitrate was employed especially, an extremely large impedance modulus at a low frequency of 0.1 Hz (|Z|f= 0.1 Hz), 11.6 MΩ cm2, and a significant low corrosion current density (jcorr) down to 1.06 nA cm−2are achieved, demonstrating NiAl-LDH coating’s great potential application in harsh reaction conditions, particularly in a marine environment. The best corrosion inhibition of NiAl-LDH/CT coating deposited by carbonate may partially ascribed to the uniform and vertical orientation of the nanosheets in the coating.

The development of high-voltage Mg metal batteries is hampered by the incompatibility between a Mg metal anode and conventional electrolyte, leading to a high overpotential for Mg plating/stripping processes. In this work, we tailored a hybrid functional layer consisting of Bi/MgCl2/polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) by an in situ THF polyreaction during the reaction of the Mg anode with BiCl3 solution. The introduction of PTHF inhibits the growth of Bi particles and fills the layer interstice with MgCl2-containing PTHF, improving the structural integrity of the functional layer and insulation between the electrolyte and Mg anode. As a result, compared to a simply modified Bi/MgCl2 layer, the Bi/MgCl2/PTHF functional layer exhibits a lower polarization voltage of 0.25 V and longer cycling life of more than 2000 h at 0.1 mA cm–2. Mechanism analysis shows that Mg is plated on the surface of Bi particles within the layer. The Mo6S8/Mg full battery with the hybrid functional layer achieved a low voltage hysteresis of ∼0.25 V and long cycling life over 500 cycles at 50 mA g–1. This work provides a facile and effective hybrid functional layer strategy to realize Mg metal batteries in conventional electrolytes.

This study is aimed at the enhancement of the corrosion and tribocorrosion performance of AZ31B magnesium (Mg) alloys after plasma electrolytic oxidization (PEO) treatment. Some PEO-treated Mg samples were coated with chitosan (CS) film by dip-coated method, while others were subjected to hydrothermal treatment (HT) followed by CS film. The microstructure and chemical composition of coatings were investigated via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . Corrosion resistance of the specimens was evaluated via electrochemical measurements (open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) in simulated body fluid. The tribocorrosion performance was determined by simultaneously recording the variation of the friction coefficient and the open circuit potential with the sliding time. The results indicated that better corrosion and tribocorrosion performance were observed when CS layer is applied on hydrothermally treated PEO samples than on the bare PEO samples. Thus, fabrication of hydrothermally treated PEO surface coatings with chitosan is a significant approach to protect the Mg from corrosion and tribocorrosion, thereby increasing the potential application of Mg alloy as biological implants .

Cyclic stability is a key factor in the design of thermochemical heat storage systems . Because carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) may react with heat storage materials and lead to a decrease in energy storage efficiency, the effect of CO 2 on Ca(OH) 2 /CaO and Mg(OH) 2 /MgO systems is investigated in this study. The experimental results show that CO 2 reacts with CaO in the water vapor that appears during the heat release process. Therefore, in the design of Ca(OH) 2 /CaO systems, CO 2 should be cleared from the system. The results from Mg(OH) 2 /MgO systems show that CO 2 only slightly reacts with MgO and Mg(OH) 2 during heat storage and release processes. This study indicates that carbonic acid (H 2 CO 3 ) could easily react with CaO/Ca(OH) 2 to form CaCO 3 during heat release processes. Generally, the remaining CO 2 reduces the reversibility of Ca(OH) 2 /CaO systems but has only a slight influence on Mg(OH) 2 /MgO systems. In addition, the experimental results show that carbonate shell does not exist in rehydration for both of the CaO/MgO samples, but the influence of CO 2 on the entire process increases after each cycle.

Due to bacteria in urine and inadequate blood supply, urethral defect repair faces great clinical difficulties. Inspired by the natural structure of the urethra, in this study, we designed a multifunctional hydrogel urethral patch with a Janus structure. The inner layer was a double-network hydrogel of polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl chitosan (PVA/CMCS) enhanced by natural phytic acid (PA) and Mg 2+ (Mg 2+ -PA/PVA/CMCS). The outer layer was composed of poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanofibers to form a hydrophobic barrier, coupling via a micelle layer to ensure interfacial bonding. The patch exhibited mechanical properties matching soft tissues, with maximum tensile strength and toughness of 1.69±0.13 MPa and 24.7±0.9 MJ/m 3 , respectively, under the strengthening effect of Mg 2+ -PA chelation. Therein, the 4 % Mg 2+ -PA/PVA/CMCS composite patch could maintain unilateral hydrophobicity for at least 14 days and demonstrated an antibacterial rate of 99.0 %±0.1 % against E. coli . In PBS, the patch could deliver Mg 2+ for at least 7 days and stabilize the surrounding pH environment for up to 28 days. In vitro cell experiments indicated that the 4 % Mg 2+ -PA/PVA/CMCS composite patch could promote the human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) proliferation and migration, with the angiogenic protein expression enhanced more than 1.2 times compared with the Control group. In conclusion, the patch constructed in this study may provide a new approach to clinical urethral injury repair.
