Carbon-based materials are widely used for H 2 S oxidation, yet their performance under ambient conditions requires further improvement via precise structural engineering. In particular, existing MgO-modified carbon materials still suffer from suboptimal H 2 S removal capacity, limited regenerability, and/or complicated synthesis processes, which restrict their practical application in room-temperature desulfurization. In this work, we report MgO/N-doped carbon catalysts synthesized by an NH 3 ·H 2 O-modulated citric acid complexation method, which demonstrated superior activity for ambient H 2 S oxidation. It was shown that the introduction of NH 3 ·H 2 O induced the formation of NH 4 NO 3 in pyrolysis precursors, and the decomposition of NH 4 NO 3 during pyrolysis created abundant carbon defects and also incorporated pyridinic/pyrrolic N species. These defects anchor Mg ions, leading to the formation of well-dispersed MgO nanosheets that enhanced surface basicity and facilitated H 2 S dissociation. Meanwhile, the defect-rich structure significantly improved O 2 activation to generate reactive 1 O 2 species for efficient H 2 S oxidation. The optimized MNC-3 delivered an exceptional H₂S capacity of 2.41 g/g cat. with 55 h breakthrough time at room temperature, and retained 0.78 g/g cat. after three regeneration cycles. This work provides a rational design strategy for high-performance, cost-effective room-temperature desulfurization materials through integrated modulation of active phase morphology, nitrogen doping, and carbon defects.

This study developed a dental composite resin incorporating KH-570-modified magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) and methacryloxypropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MAP-POSS), and evaluated its microstructure, physicochemical properties, antibacterial activity, and in vitro cytocompatibility. MgONPs were surface-modified with 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570), and composite resin specimens containing 2 wt% modified MgONPs with gradient additions of MAP-POSS were prepared, using a commercial composite resin as the control. Filler structure and modification were characterized by XRD and FTIR, and the composite resins were analyzed by SEM and FTIR. Depth of cure, Vickers hardness, water sorption, solubility, compressive strength, and flexural strength were measured. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against planktonic Streptococcus mutans ( S. mutans ) using the film contact method, and cytotoxicity was assessed using the CCK-8 assay with L-929 fibroblasts. Among the tested formulations, the specimen containing 4 wt% MAP-POSS and 2 wt% modified MgONPs exhibited the densest microstructure, the highest degree of conversion (83.03%), the greatest depth of cure and mechanical properties, a moderate reduction in viable planktonic S. mutans (R = 1.16), and no obvious cytotoxic response under the tested conditions. These results indicate that the combination of MAP-POSS and silane-modified MgONPs may be a feasible strategy for achieving balanced mechanical reinforcement and antibacterial functionality in dental composite resins.

Abstract Formic acid (FA) is a promising liquid hydrogen carrier for sustainable energy storage, but its efficient dehydrogenation under mild conditions requires advanced catalyst designs. Here, we design a multifunctional supported PdAu catalyst tailored to the mechanistic demands of formic acid dehydrogenation (FAD), constructed by anchoring PdAu nanoparticles (NPs) onto MgO-decorated, nitrogen-doped, and amino-functionalized mesoporous carbon microspheres (MgO-NMC-NH2). Systematic characterization reveals MgO decoration introduces abundant surface basic sites, improves PdAu NP dispersion, and induces the formation of electron-enriched Pd species. The optimized PdAu/0.6MgO-NMC-NH2 catalyst exhibits exceptional FAD performance at 298 K, achieving complete conversion with an initial turnover frequency of 1866 h–1, 2.37 times as high as that of the MgO-free PdAu/NMC-NH2. This work highlights the potential of multicomponent support engineering for boosting the performance of noble metal catalysts, offering a scalable strategy to advance FA as a viable hydrogen storage material for clean energy applications.

The development of a hydroxyapatite (HA)-based scaffold with high degradability and bioactivity was essential for advancing bone defect repair. In this study, HA, MgO/HA and MgO-45S5 bioglass/HA scaffolds were fabricated via spark plasma sintering, and a comprehensive comparative analysis was conducted on their degradation behavior, surface mineralization, biocompatibility and osteogenesis. The results showed that the addition of MgO and BG enabled the HA-based scaffolds to maintain a nanocrystalline structure. Compared with HA and MgO/HA scaffolds, the MgO-45S5 bioglass/HA scaffold demonstrated an increased porosity of 77.15% and improved pore interconnectivity. Moreover, the composite scaffolds exhibited higher degradation rate (75.42%) after 12 weeks, and substantial apatite deposition was detected on its scaffold surface as early as 1 day. In vitro cell assays indicated that the scaffold displayed excellent biocompatibility and enhanced osteogenic characteristics ( P < 0.0001 ). Fundamentally, the enhanced degradability was attributed to the increased surface reactivity associated with the nanocrystalline structure and high porosity. Meanwhile, it facilitated the substantial release of Mg²⁺, Si⁴⁺, Ca²⁺ and PO₄³⁻ ions, which promoted surface mineralization and activated cellular responses. These findings suggest that the co-addition of MgO and 45S5 bioglass markedly improves the functional properties and potential of the scaffold for biomedical applications. Injectable OSA/Gel hydrogel with MgO and Sr–Zn–Si silicate bioceramic is developed. • Dual crosslinking enables rapid gelation, stable mechanics, and controlled degradation. • Sustained release of Mg, Sr, Zn and soluble Si species promotes osteogenic responses. • The hydrogel promoted a more anti-inflammatory, pro-regenerative macrophage profile. • Enhanced bone regeneration is achieved in a rabbit calvarial critical-sized defect model. Bone defect healing remains challenging due to trauma-associated microenvironmental disruption, persistent inflammation, and impaired coupling between bone formation and resorption. Here, we developed an injectable, biodegradable oxidized sodium alginate/gelatin (OSA/Gel) hydrogel with tunable gelation kinetics, favorable mechanical performance, and high shape fidelity for defect filling. By incorporating magnesium oxide (MgO) and Sr₂ZnSi₂O₇ (SZS) at different ratios, the formulation was optimized and its cytocompatibility and osteoimmunomodulatory activity were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The hydrogel can be delivered minimally invasively to irregular defects and rapidly gels in situ into a porous three-dimensional scaffold, enabling sustained release of bioactive ions (Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ , Si 4+ , and Sr 2+ ). These ionic cues promoted osteogenic responses in MC3T3-E1 cells, as indicated by enhanced osteogenesis-related gene expression, increased alkaline phosphatase activity, and mineral deposition, and were concurrently associated with a shift of RAW264.7 macrophages toward a pro-regenerative M2 phenotype. In a rabbit calvarial defect model, the OSA/Gel–MgO/SZS hydrogel induced early osteoid-like tissue deposition and promoted the formation of low-mineral-density newly formed bone spanning the defect margins and extending toward the central region compared with controls. Overall, the OSA/Gel hydrogel containing 1.0% MgO and 0.5% SZS promoted bone regeneration, accompanied by enhanced osteogenic activity and a pro-regenerative immune response, demonstrating strong potential as a functional biomaterial for bone defect repair.

In calcium cycle (CaO/CaCO 3 )-driven thermochemical energy storage systems, the thermal storage capacity of calcium-based materials decreases significantly during cycling, which is mainly attributed to high-temperature sintering and pore structure degradation. To address the aforementioned issues, this study synthesized acetic acid-modified Al 2 O 3 /MgO synergistically stabilized calcium-based thermal storage materials (Ca/Mg/Al molar ratios = 100:8:8, 100:8:10, 100:8:12, 100:8:14) via a wet blending method and investigated the effects of Al 2 O 3 /MgO doping ratios on the thermal storage performance. Results demonstrated that the optimal molar ratio of Ca:Mg:Al = 100:8:12 (labeled Ca 100 -Mg 8 -Al 12 ) exhibits a 90.81% improvement in cyclic stability of thermal storage compared to the unmodified Ca 100 sample. Microstructural characterization revealed that the calcium-based synthetic material possessed abundant micropores, smaller particle sizes, and a more uniform particle size distribution. The calcium-based synthetic material holds significant potential for broad applications in thermochemical energy storage systems.

The harmless treatment of Cr-containing solid waste remains a critical environmental challenge. Herein, Cr 2 O 3 -doped CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 glass-ceramics with varying Na 2 O contents were prepared via a melting method. The study focuses on how Na 2 O regulates the glass network, crystallization behavior, and Cr immobilization efficiency. With increasing Na 2 O content, the degree of depolymerization (DOD) of the parent glass increases from 1.76 to 1.99, while the crystallization activation energy decreases accordingly. The optimal formulation is achieved at 1 wt% Na 2 O combined with a two-stage heat treatment (nucleation at 720 °C for 2 h, followed by crystallization at 850 °C for 2 h). Under these conditions, the glass-ceramic exhibits the lowest Cr leaching concentration of 0.031 mg/L, far below the regulatory limit of 5 mg/L. The dominant crystalline phases are diopside and a spinel solid solution, where Cr 3+ is stably incorporated into the spinel. These findings demonstrate that controlled Na 2 O addition provides an effective compositional lever for optimizing both crystallization kinetics and heavy metal immobilization, offering a sustainable pathway for valorizing Cr-containing wastes into high-performance glass-ceramics.

Understanding the phase equilibria of the Yb 2 O 3 -MgO-SiO 2 system is crucial to reveal the coating-medium interaction mechanism and guide composition design. In the present work, the isothermal section of the Yb 2 O 3 -MgO-SiO 2 system at 1600°C in air was systematically constructed using high-temperature equilibrium quenching experiment combined with XRD, SEM, and EPMA analyses. Ten phase regions were identified, including one liquid-phase region, four two-phase regions, and five three-phase regions. Comparative analysis with the binary subsystems highlights the restricted solubility of Yb 2 O 3 in MgO (1.61 wt%) and the associated asymmetry, which are rationalized by crystallographic constraints and defect energetics. This study fills a critical knowledge gap and provides essential phase equilibria data for designing advanced Yb-silicate coatings with enhanced CMAS and corrosion resistance, as well as for developing MgO-based refractory materials.

Mg(OH) 2 /MgO thermochemical energy storage, with its high energy storage density and long-term storage capability, provides the ability to regulate solar energy across time periods and enhances the continuity of energy supply. Lithium doping can adjust the Mg(OH) 2 dehydration temperature, enabling broader applications and facilitating its use in cascaded thermal energy storage systems. However, the materials agglomeration remains an issue, slowing the dehydration/hydration kinetics. In this study, novel ternary nanoporous carbon (NC)-MgO-LiCl composites were constructed via a calcination method. NC was used to disperse the MgO/LiCl particles and LiCl was employed to adjust the dehydration temperature. The thermodynamic properties of the composite were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of NC and LiCl modifications on the dehydration kinetic mechanism of the composite was analyzed by comparing it with pure Mg(OH) 2 /MgO and binary NC-MgO composite. Results revealed that NC matrix effectively supported uniformly dispersed MgO/LiCl nanoparticles. Both hydration and dehydration rates of the ternary composite were significantly accelerated. At a 5 % LiCl-to-MgO mass ratio, the dehydration temperature dropped by 45 °C (onset) and 53 °C (peak). Incorporating NC and LiCl progressively reduced the dehydration activation energy. Master plots showed that pure Mg(OH) 2 , binary, and ternary composites all followed a nucleation-growth mechanism, where the defects generated by reduced particle size and LiCl doping might lower activation energy. The derived kinetic models effectively characterized the dehydration process. These findings highlight the potential of matrix/salts/Mg(OH) 2 /MgO materials with wider thermal energy storage temperature ranges and provide modification references to enhance reaction kinetics based on kinetic mechanisms.

With the continual increase in power density and ongoing miniaturization of electronic devices, the design and fabrication of insulating materials must simultaneously deliver high mechanical strength and excellent thermal conductivity to mitigate localized overheating and extend service life. In this study, a nano-MgO/Tempo-oxidized nanocellulose/cellulose (MgO/TO-CNF/cellulose) composite insulating paper was developed through the integration of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and experimental validation, resulting in synergistic enhancements in mechanical, thermal, and thermal-aging properties. MD simulations revealed that the incorporation of nanofillers significantly reduced the free volume fraction, strengthened intermolecular interactions, and suppressed dipole fluctuations via interfacial hydrogen-bond networks and confinement effects, thereby increasing the mechanical modulus and glass transition temperature while lowering the dielectric constant. Experimentally, the P6 composite paper exhibited the best comprehensive performance, with tensile strength, thermal conductivity, and power-frequency breakdown strength increased by 37.29%, 155.04%, and 32.5%, respectively, compared to pristine cellulose paper. Meanwhile, its dielectric loss and permittivity were markedly reduced, the volume resistivity reached 4.67 × 10 14 Ω·m, and both the degree of polymerization (DP) and electrical stability remained high after 120 days of thermal aging. These results indicate that the synergistic effect between TO-CNF and nano-MgO enables the construction of a multiscale reinforcing network and interfacial trap structures, providing a promising strategy for the design and fabrication of long-lived, high-performance bio-based insulating materials.

Propane oxidative dehydrogenation was investigated on nano-MgO supported Cr catalysts. Cr-5.0 wt.% sample exhibited the best catalytic performance with a propylene selectivity of 84.1% and propane conversion of 10.8% at 450 °C. Cr 5 O 12 and MgCrO 4 were proved to be formed, and they could be consecutively reduced as shown by temperature programmed reduction results. The impacts of different Cr phases on propane reaction pathway were also investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reflects that Cr 5 O 12 is favorable for the propane dehydrogenation process, while MgCrO 4 would activate propane but lead to the CO x outcome.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are promising microwave absorbers; however, their high electrical conductivity often causes severe impedance mismatch, limiting broadband absorption. Here, we propose a dual-modification strategy combining phosphoric-acid passivation and MgO doping (1–5 wt%), to regulate the dielectric response of AlCoCrFeNi HEAs. The phosphate layer suppresses conduction-dominated loss, while MgO introduces heterogeneous interfaces to enhance polarization relaxation. The optimized composite with 3 wt% MgO delivers a minimum reflection loss of −37.64 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 6.08 GHz in 2–18 GHz, corresponding to a ∼3.5 × bandwidth improvement over pristine HEA. This work offers a facile and scalable dielectric-regulation route to overcome impedance mismatch in metallic HEA-based broadband absorbers.
